Estimation of the optimal cultivation area for apples by region

  • A model is developed for estimating optimal cultivation areas for apples to maximize the total profit of apple farming by region, focusing on Gyeongsangbuk-do, Chungchungbuk-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, and Jeonllabuk-do in Korea. Comparing the current cultivation areas to the optimal areas according to the model estimation during the period 1999 - 2019, the former has exceeded the latter since 2015 in all regions except for Jeonllabuk-do. This result stems from a lack of the regulation of production quantity among apple producers' regional organizations. Accordingly, the decreasing rate of the market price was greater than the increasing rate of the production quantity, and the total profit of apple farming has fallen in conjunction with increasing agricultural wage rates. Therefore, in order to reverse the current decreasing trend in the profits of apple farming, it is necessary to regulate nationwide apple cultivation areas through regional producers' associations. Ex-ante forecasting for 2019 posits the following regional optimal cultivation areas for maximizing the total income from apple farming. The Gyeongbuk apple producers' association needs to reduce its current cultivation area by 1,089 ha and to maintain 18,373 ha. In the Chungbuk region, current cultivated area should be reduced by 1,027 ha to maintain 2,722 ha, and in the Gyeongnam region, the current cultivated area should be reduced by 582 ha to maintain 2,730 ha. In contrast, the Jeonbuk region needs to increase its current cultivation area by 174 ha and to maintain at a level of 2,872 ha.

Sod Production in South Korea (한국의 잔디 생산 현황)

  • This study was carried out to provide data on current sod production in South Korea. Fifteen items were surveyed including production acreage, species and cultivars, experience on farming, production cost and the others during April to October in 2006. To estimate production acreage, 73 turfgrass growers were interviewed. Estimated acreage for turfgrass production was 2,947 ha. Acreages by province were 1,417 ha in Jeollanam-do(48%), 442 ha in Jeollabuk-do(14.9%), 344 ha in Gyeonggi-do(11.6%), 248 ha in Gyeongsangnam-do(8.4%), and 240 ha in Chungcheongnam-do(8.1%), respectively. The major sod producing regions were Jangseong-gun, Hampyeong-gun, Yeonggwang-gun, Gochang-gun, Sacheon city, Iksan city, Yeoju city, Yeoncheon-gun. Percentage of turf growers over 50 years old was 72.4 percent, which means production was carried out mainly by old farmers. Grower's career over 10 years was 84.8%. Cultivated species and varieties were 'Junggi'(55.5%) of fine-textured Korean lawngrass, common Korean lawngrass(37.4%), Kentucky bluegrass(3.8%), and new zoysiagrass cultivars(0.1%), respectively. Sod size were variable. Sod size of $18{\times}18cm $ was 43.5 percent. Sales route was mainly through sod distributor(40.5%). Sod producing cost was $2,160{\sim}2,730$ won per square meter at Jeolla-do areas.

Occurrence Trends of Herbicide Resistant Weeds in Paddy Fields in Korea (제초제 저항성 논잡초 발생동향)

  • National Academy of Agricultural Science and eight province Agricultural Research & Extension Services investigated the occurring area of herbicide resistant weeds in paddy field of Korea. In order to estimate the occurring areas of herbicide resistant weeds, we collected paddy soils on August, 2011 and treated 30kg $ha^{-1}$ of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl+pyriminobac-methyl GR. 167,081ha, approximately 20.9% of cultivated area excluding organic and eco-friendly cultivated area, was estimated to be infested by SU-herbicide resistant paddy field weeds. It was increased by 60,130ha compared with investigation of 2008. It was occurred at Chungchungnam-do by 47.6%, followed by 36.9% at Jeonranam-do, 25.7% at Chungchungbuk-do, 20.5% at Gangwon do, and 13.0% at Gyeonggi-do, respectively. Monochoria vaginalis showed the highest with 65,313ha, 39.1% followed by Scirpus juncoides, and Cyperus difformis, respectively. These three species were evenly distributed and the most problematic weeds in the country. Lindernia dubia occurred at 13,964ha (8.4%) and Echinochloa oryzicola was 5.1%, respectively.

Analysis of Forest Fire Occurrence in Korea (한국의 산불발생 실태분석)

  • The number of forest fire under various conditions such as year, month, time, day of the week, region, damaged species, cause, and damaged area are checked, and the statistics of the forest fire causing materials in recent 14 years ('91-'04) are analyzed. The result shows that the year majority of forest fires had happened in last 14 year was 2001 and most of forest fire occurred in April, Sunday, around 14:00 to 15:00. The most damaged region is Gyeongsangbuk-Do, followed by Gangwon-Do, Jeollabuk-Do, and Gyeonggi-Do. The most damaged species is pine tree. The main causes of forest fires are accidental fire and incineration of a field boundary; however, recently, incendiarism is increased. The result of analysis on the damaged area shows that small fires under 5 ha occurred most frequently and large fires (over 30 ha) occurred mostly in Kangwon province (44.2%). The result also shows that the large forest fires (1,113 minutes) require 7.5 time more than the small forest fires (148 minutes). Especially, since average damaged area caused by large forest fire was about 470 ha per incident.

Effects of Soil Improvement and Growth of Watermelon on Plastic Film House by Soil Treatment of Miscanthus sinensis (억새 처리에 따른 시설수박 생육과 토양 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • BACKGROUND: Silver grass (Miscanthus sinensis) No. 1 was developed for production of bio-ethanol, and for the purpose the silver grass growing sector was established in Geumgang basin, Iksan, Jeonbuk, in 2011. However, the other application potentials except for using as the bio-energy resources should be considered because of the drop in international oil prices. Therefore, there is the necessity of a scientific basis to use the silver grass instead of rice straw as the organic matter source that is used for improvement of soil quality in the plastic film house. METHODS AND RESULTS: The silver grass was applied at 5, 10, 15 and 20 Mg/ha and tilled before the watermelon was planted in the plastic film-house. The control plot was treated with 10 Mg/ha with rice straw, and watermelons have been cultivated for 3 years(2017~2019). Soil aggregation, soil chemistry, and the growth characteristics were investigated, when the watermelon was harvested every year. Soil aggregation levels at the 2nd and 3rd year of watermelon harvest were similar from the plot applied with the silver grass at 5 Mg/ha and the control plot, and increased in the silver grass treated plots with more than 10 Mg/ha. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the plots. The nitrogen mineralization of silver grass in the control plot tended to be similar to the 5 Mg/ha plot, but the silver grass treated plots with over 10 Mg/ha showed low nitrogen mineralization. Soil EC on harvest stage was proportional to the applied mass of the silver grass, but pH was in inverse with the applied mass. Soil organic matter content, available phosphate, and exchangeable cations increased with the continued use of silver grass. Watermelon weight found to be the best on more than 15 Mg/ha of silver grass, and the sugar content was highest when 10 Mg/ha was treated. CONCLUSION: The use of the silver grass at 10 Mg/ha annually as the organic source was effective in replacing rice straw while growing fruits and vegetables on the plastic film house.

Effects of sowing time and quantity on naked oat (Avena sativa L.) in South Korea

  • This study was conducted to evaluated the effects of different sowing time(October 22, February 20, March 3, March 13, and March 23) and sowing quantities(150kg/ha, 200kg/ha, 250kg/ha, and 300kg/ha) on growth of naked oat(Avena sativa L.) cultivar(Choyang-Gwiri) at a cultivation area in Iksan, south Korea. Heading times were delayed with later sowing times. In autumn seeding(Oct. 22) the ear was headed at April 30, in spring seeding(Feb. 20, Mar. 3, Mar. 13, and Mar. 23) heading times were respectively May 14, May 14, May 15, and May 19. Heading time of spring seeding was delayed about 3 weeks than autumn seeding. Ripening times were similar trends to the heading times. In autumn seeding ears were ripened at June 7, in spring seeding each times were respectively Jun. 15, Jun. 13, Jun. 20, and Jun. 20. Ripening time of spring seeding was delayed about 2 weeks than autumn seeding. Culm length and ear length were shortened in spring seeding, but number of plants per $m^2$ were increased. Number of grains per a ear were 106 in autumn seeding, but grains per a ear in spring seeding were respectively 88, 83, 83, and 73. Weight of 1,000 grains in spring seeding was heavier than that in autumn seeding, the weights were tend to light as later seeding times. Yield of grains was declined as later seeding times, yield of in autumn seeding was 2,900kg/ha, whereas that in spring seeding was 2,180kg/ha. The highest yield of spring seeding time was in Mar. 13, before this seeding time soil surfaces were severely dried as few rain fall, so germination was poor in those seeding times. As several seeding quantities were seeding, earing and ripening times were not different. but increasing seeding quantity, culm length was lengthened and ear length was shortened, number of plants per $m^2$ were increased and grains per a ear were reduced. Yield of grains were increased more seeding quantities, yield was highest up to 250kg/ha seeding quantity.

Assessment of Carbon Stock and Uptake by Estimation of Stem Taper Equation for Pinus densiflora in Korea (우리나라 소나무의 수간곡선식 추정에 의한 탄소저장량 및 흡수량 산정)

  • This study was conducted to estimate carbon stocks of Pinus densiflora with drawing volume of trees in each tree height and DBH applying the suitable stem taper equation and tree specific carbon emission factors, using collected growth data from all over the country. Information on distribution area, tree age, tree number per hectare, tree volume and volume stocks were obtained from the $5^{th}$ National Forest Inventory (2006~2010) and Statistical yearbook of forest (2016), and method provided in IPCC GPG was applied to estimate carbon stock and uptake. Performance in predicting stem diameter at a specific point along a stem in Pinus densiflora by applying Kozak's model, $d=a_{1}DBH^{a_2}a_3^{DBH}X^{b_{1}Z^2+b_2ln(Z+0.001)+b_3\sqrt{Z}+b_4e^z+b_5(\frac{DBH}{H})}$, which is well known equation in stem taper estimation, was evaluated with validations statistics, Fitness Index, Bias and Standard Error of Bias. Consequently, Kozak's model turned out to be suitable in all validations statistics. Stem volume table of P. densiflora was derived by applying Kozak's model and carbon stock tables in each tree height and DBH were developed with country-specific carbon emission factors ($WD=0.445t/m^3$, BEF = 1.445, R = 0.255) of P. densiflora. As the results of analysis in carbon uptake for each province, the values were high with Gangwon-do $9.4tCO_2/ha/yr$, Gyeongsandnam-do and Gyeonggi-do $8.7tCO_2/ha/yr$, Chungcheongnam-do $7.9tCO_2/ha/yr$ and Gyeongsangbuk-do $7.8tCO_2/ha/yr$ in order, and Jeju-do was the lowest with $6.8tC/ha/yr$. Total carbon stocks of P. densiflora were 127,677 thousands tC which is 25.5% compared with total percentage of forest and carbon stock per hectare (ha) was $84.5tC/ha/yr$ and $7.8tCO_2/ha/yr$, respectively.

A study on Location Condition for Erosion Control Dam - Focus on Chungcheong region and Kyeongsangbuk-do - (사방댐 입지조건에 관한 연구 - 충청지역과 경북지역을 중심으로 -)

  • This study is to analyze location conditions for erosion control dams to be constructed in Chungcheongnam-do, Daejeon Metropolitan City, Chungcheongbuk-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do in order to establish proper conditions for erosion control dams in the future. 199 sites where erosion control dams are expected to be built in 2010 were chosen and investigated in terms of 12 factors including basin area, basin slope, and landslide risk. The results showed that erosion control dams for Chungcheongnam-do and Daejeon Metropolitan City are mostly impermeable gravity dams mainly composed of concrete. In contrast, Chungcheongbuk-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do are increasing the number of permeable or compound erosion control dams. Basin analysis at planned erosion control dam sites showed that at least 44.5% of the total area has high landslide risk. Gyeongsangbuk-do had the largest basin area for erosion control dam sites at 157.3ha, followed by Chungcheongbuk-do at 64.4ha and Chungcheongnam-do at 54.8ha. Analysis of sand deposits in the Chungcheongnam-do erosion control dam built in 2010 confirmed an average deposit of 971.8m3. The sand deposit capacity and amount of sediment control for erosion control dams have a very low correlation with basin area or flow path slope, and this needs to be addressed in future sand deposit capacity designs.

Effects of Oyster Shell Lime on Barley Growth and Soil Microbe in an Upland Soil (패화석이 보리생육과 토양 미생물상에 미치는 영향)

  • Oyster shell has a high content of $CaCO_3$ to be used as a acidic soil amendment. To enhance productivity of barley and soil microbe in an upland soil, oyster shell and calcium-magnesium carbonate were selected as a soil amendments in this study. A field experiment was treated no treatment (hereafter, control), oyster shell lime $3.09Mg\;ha^{-1}$ and $2.38Mg\;ha^{-1}$, and calcium-magnesium carbonate $2.38Mg\;ha^{-1}$ as amount of lime requirement in silt loam soil. The yield of barley from the oyster shell lime treatment was the highest. The protein content of barley was the highest of 11.1% in the calcium-magnesium carbonate, followed by 10.7% for the control, 10.6% for the oyster shell lime $3.09Mg\;ha^{-1}$, and 10.4% for the oyster shell lime $2.38Mg\;ha^{-1}$. Soil pH value was higher than that of control in harvesting stage. In addition, the population of soil bacteria was highest in oyster shell lime $2.38Mg\;ha^{-1}$, actinomycetes was highest in calcium-magnesium $2.38Mg\;ha^{-1}$. We concluded that the oyster shell lime can be effective to restore soil nutrient and microbe balance in an upland soil.

A Study on the Actual Vegetation of Nanji-do for Restoration of Ecosystem after Stabilization Construction (난지도 안정화공사 이후 생태계 복원을 위한 현존식생에 관한 연구)

  • Nanji-do is an island in Seoul, the area is 272ha, and in which gad was piled up waste discharged from Seoul metropolitan for 15 years(form March 1978 to March 1993). The volume of waste is 92, 000, 000m$^{2}$. The actual vegetation area of Nanji-do is 191ha, and the area of woody plant is 31ha. The rest area is covered by herbaceaus plant. In actual vegetation area of woody plant, Robinia pseudoacacia community and Salix pseudo-lasiogyne community are 83%. The soil pH is alkaline, though general soil pH is acid in Seoul. There is no relation with soil condition and actual vegetation. The result of this study, actual vegetation of Nanji-do don't help the establishment of vegetation restoration after soil stabilization construction. And so following a countermeasure is proposed. 1) Selection of adequate species by an experiment of planting pioneer species, native species, and dietary species 2) Establishment of an adequate planting plan and development of slope stabilization method by planting of native species 3) Establishment of a restoration plan of animal ecosystem by survey for animal ecosystem
