  • The studying is to analyze characteristic of air flow and is used to design in an automotive HVAC module. The RNG k-e turbulence model with the Upwind Difference convection scheme and an unstructured hybrid mesh with arbitrary matching method were applied to the simulation. The comparing air flow characteristic of the basic HVAC module and total HVAC module with blower were discussed in the paper.

  • Comprehensive study on the system, including blower and ducts, of HVAC device of a vehicle has been carried out for improvements of noise characteristics. The parameters of design improvements are concerned with geometric informations such as the shape of ducts and presence of a windshield window. Test results show that noise level increasing the following order: HV (HD) < V (D) < BH ${\sim}$ BHV (BHD) < B (B, H, V, D denote for blower, heater unit, vent duct, defrost duct, respectively). The effects of windshield glass on the noise level in the case of defrost mode are pronounced and the effects of the geometry of ducts on the overall HVAC noise prove to be not small.

  • To verify applicability of multi-dimensional spectral analysis (MDSA) fur noise source identification two different approaches which are frequency response and coherent function have been investigated. The coherence function approach appears able to separate the correlated system when the noise sources were coherent. In this study, we identify contribution of structure-borne-noise of vehicle HVAC system using MDSA method. Firstly, to identify the applicability of MDSA method, 4-inputs of vehicle HVAC system were the signals measured by accelerometers attached on the selected noise sources which were composed of blower, evaporator, heater and duct. While 1-output which was driver's position sound was the SPL signals measured by a remote microphone, when the blower motor was operating. We identify efficiency of systems modeled with four Inputs/single output through ordinary coherence function (OCF) and partial coherence function (PCF). As a result of experiment, the blower accounted for $62-88\%$ of the overall level of sound energy density. Also, according to the analysis of acoustic signal and vibration signals measurement, an investigation of the noise source identification in the vehicle HVAC is presented. With the sound intensity method, the major sources of the vehicle HVAC radiation are verified. Also the method of improving the noise reduction is proposed by attaching damping patch access to blower motor and noise reduction is verified.

  • HVAC systems are used to maintain comfort conditions in occupied spaces. Like rolling noise and aerodynamic noise, noise from the HVAC system of train increases interior noise level. For an appropriate interior noise level, it is necessary not to find noise sources and their propagation paths. Noise emission from the sources and propagation through the propagation paths should be regulated in order to reduce their effect to the interior noise level. In general, the main noise source in the HVAC system is blower which operates at high static pressure. This noise propagates through ducts which are directly connected to the residential area. Since the blower noise can be reduced only to some degree, it is necessary for the propagation paths to have enough noise attenuation. Acoustic properties of ducts are usually found by experimental methods but it is rather difficult and expensive to set up such test equipments. In this thesis, the design and the noise characteristics of TGV-K HVAC system are studied. Finite element method in accordance with experimental method is used to study the acoustic properties of TGV-K duct system.

  • Flow characteristics inside a blower unit of an automotive HVAC module were investigated experimentally using a high-resolution PIV technique. The PIV system consists of a 2-head Nd:YAG laser, a high-resolution CCD camera, optics and a synchronizer. The prototype siroco-fan with forward-curved blades was operated under the same condition of real car. The scroll casing was made transparently for capturing clear flow images. The time-averaged velocity fields were measured in three cross sections. Flow is accelerated with going toward the outer wall of scroll due to centrifugal force and large pressure gradient formed in the region between the fan and the outer casing wall. The presence of the cut-off region and diffusing duct of fan outlet influences largely the flow structure inside the blower unit.

The four inputs which is given vibration data is composed of blower, evaporator, heater and duct. The single output is noise data from driver's seat. When the blower motor is operating, we analyze the contributions of four input / single output. As a result of experiment, we identify efficiency of systems modeled with four input / single output through ordinary coherence function (OCF) and multiple coherence function (MCF).

  • The HVAC(Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system is only controlled by turn on/turn off operations with AC 380V input. Therefore, the efficiency of the system is reduced and accoustic noise problem occurs. Also, the blower is shut down at the AC power failure. In this paper, the inverter system with UPS function for the A/C(Air Conditioning) blower is proposed. Proposed inverter system which is powered from the AC and DC voltage can control speed, operation mode, and soft-start time using CAN communication. In case of the CAN communication failure, RS-232 communication could be used to control the hardware directly by the engineer that can solve existing problems. To verify the validity of proposed inverter system, simulations and experiments are carried out.

  • Measurements have been made in an automotive HVAC b1ower for two different centrifugal fans. This work is directed at improving the performance of a conventional forward-curved centrifugal fan for a given small blower casing. Mean velocities and pressure have been measured using a miniature five-hole probe and a pressure scanning unit connected to an online data acquisition system. First, we obtained the fan performance versus flow rates showing a significant attenuation of unstable nature achieved with the new fan rotor in the surging operation range. Second, aerodynamic characterizations were carried out by investigating the velocity and pressure fields in the casing flow passage for different fan operating conditions. The measurements stowed that performance coefficients are strongly influenced by flow characteristics at the throat region. The main flow features ware common in both fans, but improved performance is achieved with tole new fan rotor, particularly in lower flow rate legions. Based on the measured results, design improvements were carried out in an acceptable operation range, which gave considerable insight into what features of flow behavior ware most important.

  • To date, induction motors have mainly been used for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) applications, however, there is significant research being done world-wide on the use of switched reluctance motor(SRM) in household home appliances. This papers proposes three phase SRM for the air-conditioner blower that has cost merit and good performance respectively compared with conventional induction motor.
