  • The concepts of flexible displays and plastic electronics have become some of the most talked about new product opportunities for direct view flat panel displays in recent years. The potential advantages are frequently cited, but the achievement of commercially viable products will require many significant technological innovations in new materials and manufacturing technology. This paper will provide a very broad overview of the rationale for developing flexible displays, the market drivers, the applicable display technologies, the major hurdles that must be overcome and the required evolution of new manufacturing technologies that are essential for successful commercialization. This is intended to provide the outline and context for the series of presentations on specific aspects in each of these topics that will be delivered and discussed at the Plastic Electronics Special Session of the 2005 IMID conference.

  • Many nanomaterials are being harnessed as critical components in various systems for biomedical applications including diagnosis, imaging, and drug delivery. Those systems necessitate biocompatibility and low toxcity within effective dose range while achieving enough efficacy. Even though many nanomaterials enjoy successful demonstrations in bioapplications, lack of biocompatibility and high cytotoxicity often become hurdles for practical bioapplications. On the other hand, it is important to achieve enough efficiency based on chemically well-defined systems with efforts to understand mechanism at molecular level. Here, we developvarious biocompatible nanomaterials based on simple procedure using dextran as both reducing agent and surface coating. Dextran is one of the popular biocompatible polymers that have been used for drug delivery and biosensors. Dextran coated nanomaterials showed excellent colloidal stability, flexible surface chemistry for conjugation of bioactive molecules and low cytotoxicity with successful demonstrations in various bioapplications.

  • The limited battery power in the mobile environment, lack of sufficient wireless bandwidth, limited resources of mobile terminals, and frequent breakdowns of the wireless network have become major hurdles in the development of mobile cloud computing (MCC). In order to solve the abovementioned problems, This paper propose a proxy-based MCC framework by adding a proxy server between mobile devices and cloud services to optimize the access to cloud services by mobile devices on the network transmission, application support, and service mode levels. Finally, we verify the effectiveness of the developed framework through an experimental analysis. This framework can ensure that mobile users have efficient access to cloud services.

  • Mobile operators today face yet another critical challenge as technology lifecycle becomes increasingly short and also as heterogeneous and complex network becomes exceedingly expensive and difficult to manage. With extremely competitive market and demanding users, the overall revenue structure is expected to get worse. A network architecture based on software-defined networking (SDN) and virtualization techniques gives operators greater opportunity to build cost-effective and efficient alternative to the legacy. In this work we review our Carrier Cloud as a future mobile network infrastructure that exploits both SDN and NFV in order to increase the operator agility, reduce the cost, and even disrupt the vendor landscape. This new architecture will not be fully adopted by the conservative operators at once. Technological hurdles have to be overcome, and a clear understanding of operational differences must be preceded.

  • As proven petroleum reserves decline through continued production. exploration for new oil and gas resources will extend into environments which present significant economic risks arid technical hurdles. Since safety is one of the biggest concerns in drilling operations. the oil industry routinely trains its personnel in areas which are critical for safe and economical drilling procedures. One of these major areas is well control. A kick is defined as an unscheduled flow of formation fluids into a wellhole. A kick occurs whenever the resultant wellbore pressure is less than the formation pressure in an exposed zone capable of producing kick fluids. The typical causes of reduced wellbore pressure are insufficient mud weight. inadequate fluid level in the hole, and swabbing.(omitted)

  • In this paper, we analyzed the existing control methods of the legacy wearable-based CE devices and identified the requirements for improvements. In the conventional system, users waste their time configuring the initial network and registering their devices with the management server. To overcome these hurdles, we implemented the Easy-Setup framework for smart phones to personalized cloud devices.

  • Magnesium alloy sheets have been extending their field of applications to automotive and electronic industries taking advantage of their excellent light weight property. In addition to their excellent light property, magnesium alloys have several other advantages: high specific strength, good welding capability and corrosion resistance. Taking advantage of these benefits, magnesium alloys have also been substituting the polymeric materials in the electronic devices industries. In sheet metal forming application with magnesium alloys, the lower formability and high springback due to the lower elastic property (Young's modulus=45 GPa) at room temperature are major hurdles by which magnesium alloys have limited applications. In this study, commercial notebook case was adopted as the benchmark model, and then design parameters and process conditions are analyzed by the finite element simulation and physical try-outs.

  • All Deficiency section (諸虛門) in Euibangyoochui (醫方類聚), fills volumes 143-154 of Euibangyoochui's 266 volumes. In it, diverse and meaningful concepts such as Consumptive Disease (虛勞) and Fatigue Due to Overexertion (勞倦) are introduced to describe deficiency-oriented diseases. Before the 10th century, there are classified into six categories: muscle exhaustion, pulse exhaustion, flush exhaustion, Qi exhaustion, essence exhaustion, bone exhaustion, and prescribing treatments for treating diseases corresponding to each exhaustion. As medical knowledge was integrated through the medical books compiled by the government, awareness of Consumptive Disease was advanced to clarify the concept of pathways. The Confucian doctors have led to changes in recognition of the cause of the Consumptive Disease from damage of human factors to an internal problem. It can be seen that the classification of hurdles has become more diverse just before the outbreak of Euibangyoochui and that they include various diseases.

  • There is urgent need for effective and cost-efficient data storage, as the worldwide requirement for data storage is rapidly growing. DNA has introduced a new tool for storing digital information. Recent studies have successfully stored digital information, such as text and gif animation. Previous studies tackled technical hurdles due to errors from DNA synthesis and sequencing. Studies also have focused on a strategy that makes use of 100-150-bp read sizes in both synthesis and sequencing. In this paper, we a suggest novel data encoding/decoding scheme that makes use of long-read DNA (~1,000 bp). This enables accurate recovery of stored digital information with a smaller number of reads than the previous approach. Also, this approach reduces sequencing time.

  • Previous studies have modified microbial genomes by introducing gene cassettes containing selectable markers and homologous DNA fragments. However, this requires several steps including homologous recombination and excision of unnecessary DNA regions, such as selectable markers from the modified genome. Further, genomic manipulation often leaves scars and traces that interfere with downstream iterative genome engineering. A decade ago, the CRISPR/Cas system (also known as the bacterial adaptive immune system) revolutionized genome editing technology. Among the various CRISPR nucleases of numerous bacteria and archaea, the Cas9 and Cas12a (Cpf1) systems have been largely adopted for genome editing in all living organisms due to their simplicity, as they consist of a single polypeptide nuclease with a target-recognizing RNA. However, accurate and fine-tuned genome editing remains challenging due to mismatch tolerance and protospacer adjacent motif (PAM)-dependent target recognition. Therefore, this review describes how to overcome the aforementioned hurdles, which especially affect genome editing in higher organisms. Additionally, the biological significance of CRISPR-mediated microbial genome editing is discussed, and future research and development directions are also proposed.
