The substantial improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be achieved with small-size samples or low-field MRI system by high-temperature superconducting(HTS) RF coil. The typical HTS RF coil made of HTS thin film is expensive and is limited the coil geometry to planar surface coil. In this study, commercial Bi-2223 HTS tapes was used as RF coil for a 0.35T permanent MRI system. It has advantages of both much lower cost and easier fabrication over HTS thin film coil. SNR gain of the image obtained from the HTS RF coil over a conventional Cu RF coil at room temperature was about 2.4-fold and 1.9-fold using the spin echo pulse sequence and gradient echo pulse sequence respectively.
We report the performance of a four-element, 11.67 GHz, $high-{T}_c$ superconducting (HTS) microstrip antenna array with corporate feed network. The HTS antenna array used in this work had a circular polarization for direct broadcasting satellite (DBS) system. Our array antennas were designed and built on a 0.5 mm thick MgO substrate. To compare the superconducting antennas with normal conducting counterpart, One antenna pattern was fabricated from gold thin film, and a second pattern was fabricated from ${YBa}_2{Cu}_3{O}_7-x(YBCO)$ superconducting thin film. To improve the axial ratio of circularly polarized arrays, sequential rotation technique were used. Efficiency, radiation pattern, return loss and bandwidth were measured for both antennas at cryogenic temperature and room temperature. The array produced good circular polarization, and the gain of the array at 77 K, relative to a copper array at room temperature was approximately 1.54 dB. The measured return loss of our HTS antenna array was 35.79 dB at the resonant frequency of 11.67 GHz and The total effective bandwidth was about 3.4 %. The results showed that high-temperature superconductors, when used in microstrip arrays, improved the efficiency of the HTS antenna array for circularly polarization.
Toward the practical applications, on operation of conduction-cooled HTS SMES at temperatures well below 77 K should be investigated, in order to take advantage of a greater critical current density of HTS and considerably reduce the size and weight of the system. Recently, research and development concerning application of the conduction-cooled HTS SMES that is easily movement are actively progressing in Korea. Electrical insulation under cryogenic temperature is a key and an important element in the application of this apparatus. Using multi wrapped copper by Polyimide film for HTS SMES, the breakdown characteristics of models for turn-to-turn, that is surface contact model, were investigated under ac and impulse voltage at 77 K. A material that is Polyimide film (Kapton) 0.025 mm thickness is used for multi wrapping of the electrode. Statistical analysis of the results using Weibull distribution to examine the wrapping number effects on breakdown voltage under at and impulse voltage in $LN_2$ was carried.
Although $High-T_c $superconducting HTS antennas have high efficiency and high gain, narrow bandwidth due to the high Q is the major limitation for application of satellite communication and mobile communication. Defining bandwidth as the frequency range over which standing wave ratio (SWR) is 2:1 or less, HTS antenna bandwidths are typically less than 1 %. Thus considerable effort has been focused on developing HTS antennas for broadband operation. In this work the HTS antenna array, using the bipin antenna which consisted of two triangle-radiation patches, was designed and fabricated using a ${YBa}_2{Cu}_3{O}_7x (YBCO)$ superconducting thin film on a MgO substrate for broadband operation. Also gold antennas with the same dimension as our HTS antennas were fabricated on the MgO substrate for the comparison. Experimental results for both antennas were reported in terms of radiation patterns, return losses, bandwidths and other various characteristics. The center frequency of HTS antennas was 20.28 GHz and the bandwidth obtained was significant 10 %.
″H″ type resonator has the advantage for the miniaturization of high-T7 superconducting (HTS) microstrip antenna in comparison with the conventional microstrip antenna such as rectangular type or circular type. In this paper we designed miniaturized HTS antennas using this "H"-type resonator and reported the characteristics of our antennas including return loss, bandwidth, radiation patterns, efficiency and so on. To fabricate the "H" type antenna, HTS YBa$_2$Cu$_3$$O_{7-x}$ (YBCO) thin films were deposited on MgO substrates using rf-magnetron sputtering. For comparison between normal conducting antennas and superconducting antennas, the gold antennas with the same dimension were also fabricated. An aperture coupling was used for impedance matching between 50 $\Omega$ feed line and HTS radiating patch. The ″H" type superconducting antenna showed the performance of 1.38 in SWR, 26 % in efficiency, and 13.8 dB in the return loss superior to the normal conducting counterpart.

Effects of temperature coefficients fur dielectric constants on transient reflectances and thermal responses have been investigated for a metal(gold) thin-film during ultrashort pulse laser heating. Heating processes are simulated using the conventional conduction model(parabolic one-step, POS), the parabolic tow-step model(PTS), the hyperbolic two-step model(HTS). Results fro the HTS model are very similar to those from the PTS model, since the laser heating time in this study is considerably greater than the electron relaxation time. PTS and HTS models, however, result in completely different temperature profiles from those obtained by the POS model due to slow electron-lattice interactions compared to laser pulse duration. Transient reflectances are directly estimated from the linear relationship between electron temperature and complex dielectric constants, while conventional approaches assume that the change in reflectances is proportional to that in temperatuer. Reflectances at the front surface vary considerably for various dielectric constants, while those at the rear surface remain unchanged relatively.
In this paper, we used E-J constitutive law and H-formulation to calculate magnetic field profile, current density, and magnetization of high temperature superconductor (HTS) placed in time varying applied magnetic field. Finite element method (FEM)-based software, Comsol Multiphysics 3.5a, was employed to simulate 2-dimensional model of a superconducting thin strip. The numerical results based on Kim's critical state model were compared with the case of strip in a perpendicular field in the Brandt's paper as well as experimental data observed by Scanning Hall Probe and SQUID.
In this paper, we proposed a method to shield perpendicular magnetic fields in high Tc superconductor(HTS) tape of a shell-type HTS transformer with double pancake windings. A diamagnetism of characteristics of superconductor is used to shield magnetic field. For a shielding experiment, a proper shielding model is chosen, and several kinds of HTS are used such as a monofilament HTS tape, two kinds of multifilament HTS tapes and YBCO film disk. The effect of shielding for the perpendicular magnetic field is measured with HTSs for shielding and their utility for shielding is proved.
$Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{x}$(Bi-2212) and $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y}$(Bi-2223) high-$T_{c}$ superconductor(HTS) coating have been prepared by plasma spraying and heaat treatment. The Bi-2212 HTS coating later is synthesized through the peritectic reaction between Sr-Ca-Cu oxide coating layer and Bi-Cu oxide coating later, and $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{y}$(Bi-2212) superconducting phase grow by partial melting process. The superconducting characteristic depends strongly on the conditions of the partial melting process. the Bi-2212 HTS layer consists of the whiskers grown in the diffusion direction. Above the 2212 layer, Bi-2223 phase and secondary phase was observed. The secondary phase is distributed uniformly over the whole surface. This is caused to the microcrack on the coatings surface. Despite everything, the film shows superconducting with an onset $T_{c}$ of about 115K. There are two changes steps. One changes (1step) at 115K is due to the diamagnetism of the Bi-2223 phase and the other changes (2step) at 78K is due to the diamagnetism of the Bi-2212 phase.
