  • In this paper, a Magnetic Core Reactor (MCR) which forms a part of the DC reactor type three-phase high-Tc superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been developed. This SFCL is more economical than other types with three coils since it uses only one high-Tc superconducting (HTS) coil. When DC reactor type three-phase high-Tc SFCL is developed using just one coil, fewer power electronic devices and shorter HTS wire are needed. The SFCL proposed in this paper needs a power-linking device to connect the SFCL to the power system. The design concept for this device was sprang from the fact that the magnetic energy could be changed into the electrical energy and vice versa. Ferromagnetic material is used as a path of magnetic flux. When high-Tc superconducting DC reactor is separated from the power system by using SCRs, this device also limits fault current until the circuit breaker is opened. The device mentioned above was named Magnetic Core Reactor (MCR). MCR was designed to minimize the voltage drop and total losses. Majority of the design parameters was tuned through experiments with the design prototype. In the experiment, the current density of winding conductor was found to be $1.3\;A/mm^2$, voltage drop across MCR was 20 V and total losses on normal state was 1.3 kW.

  • Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) system is one of the key technologies to overcome the voltage sag, swell, interruption and frequency fluctuation by fast response speed of current charge and discharge. In order to evaluate the characteristics of over mega joule class grid connected High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) SMES system, the authors proposed an algorithm by which the SMES coil could be connected to the Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS). Using the proposed algorithm, users can perform the simulation of voltage sag and frequency stabilization with a real SMES coil in real time and easily change the capacity of SMES system as much as they need. To demonstrate the algorithm, real charge and discharge circuit and active load were manufactured and experimented. The results show that the current from real system was well amplified and applied to the current source of simulation circuit in real time.

  • YBCO do superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometers based on bicrystal Josephson junctions on 10 mm ${\times}$ 10 mm $SrTiO_3$ substrates have been fabricated. The pickup coil of the device was designed to have 16 parallel loops with 50-fm-wide lines. We could obtain optimised direct coupled YBCO SQUID magnetometer design with field sensitivity $B_{N}$ $\Phi$/ of $4.5 nT/\Phi_{0}$ and magnetic field noise $B_{N}$ of about $22 fT/Hz^{1}$2/ with an I/f corner frequency of 2 Hz measured inside a magnetically shielded room. Preliminary results of magnetocardiograph measurement using the HTS SQUID magnetometers show signal to noise ratio of about 110, which is comparable to the quality of a commercial MCG system based on Nb-SQUIDs.

  • The superconducting Homopolar motor is manufactured and tested. Homopolar motor system is simple and solid as the field coil of the motor is fixed near the stator coil without rotating system. In this paper, a 5 kW fully superconducting homopolar motor which has high temperature superconducting armature and field coils is manufactured and tested in liquid nitrogen. The critical current test results of the used 2G superconducting wire, pancake coil for rotor winding and race-track coils for armature winding are reported. Also, the test result of rotating and operating performance is presented. The operating frequency is to be 5 Hz for low-speed rotating. The developed fully superconducting Homopolar motor is the world's first.

  • High Tc superconducting(HTS) model coil was prepared. Current-voltage(I-V) characteristic curves of model coil, sub-coils and joints were investigated at 77K and other some temperatures. Cooling system for characteristics measurement was made by using G-M cryocooler. At 77K, quench current(Iq) of model coil was 43.9A and the lowest Iq of sub-coils was 38.8A. At 55K, sub coil SP #06 was 106A. So, 100A was chosen as the operating current at 55K with margin. Joule heat of model coil was 0.65W at 100A, operating current and 58K. Joint resistances between sub-coils were about $70n{\Omega}$ at 77K and about $30n{\Omega}$ at 55K.

  • Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is attractive apparatus to reduce fault current in power grid. Since it is applied to the alternating current (AC) power line, the SFCL has losses in the normal operation. Recently, coated conductor (CC) is noticeable material employed for resistive bifilar winding type SFCL in many research groups. Bifilar structure is expected to have low AC loss by magnetic field offset as compared with the single tape structure in the same length. This paper reports about characteristic of bifilar pancake type coil for SFCL application in AC loss aspect. The bifilar coil is wound using CC with facing on HTS sides each other. Transport AC loss measurement and characteristic analysis of the bifilar coil using CC have been performed at 77K. The test results are compared with the Norris equations and the test results of non-inductively wound paralleled solenoid type coil which is suggested and tested in this group at present.

  • A liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) is usually used to be a coolant and insulant for a HTS coil system. HTS wires for a superconducting apparatus may be surrounded by gaseous nitrogen ($GN_2$) due to film boiling generated by a quench or voids occurred by electrical breakdown. The increased maximum electric field intensity at $GN_2$ may result in the degradation of dielectric strength of a HTS coil system. In this paper, a study on the dielectric characteristics of a composite insulation system composed of $LN_2$ and $GN_2$ is performed. A sphere-to-plane electrode system made with stainless steel is used to perform the experiments under AC and lightning impulse voltage condition. A sphere electrode is surrounded by $GN_2$ and a plane electrode is immersed into $LN_2$ to conduct dielectric experiments with a composite insulation system. The dielectric experiments are performed according to the level of $LN_2$ from the plane electrode to a sphere electrode. It is found that the dielectric characteristics of a composite insulation system are dependent on the level of $LN_2$ and the field utilization factor of an electrode system.

  • The superconducting NMR magnets have used cryogen such as liquid helium for their cooling. The conduction cooling method using cryocoolers, however, makes the cryogenic cooling system for NMR magnets more compact and user-friendly than the cryogen cooling method. This paper describes the thermal and structural analysis of a cryogenic conduction cooling system for a 400 MHz HTS NMR magnet, focusing on the magnet assembly. The highly thermo-conductive cooling plates between HTS double pancake coils are used to transfer the heat generated in coils, namely Joule heating at lap splice joints, to thermal link blocks and finally the cryocooler. The conduction cooling structure of the HTS magnet assembly preliminarily designed is verified by thermal and structural analysis. The orthotropic thermal properties of the HTS coil, thermal contact resistance and radiation heat load are considered in the thermal analysis. The thermal analysis confirms the uniform temperature distribution for the present thermal design of the NMR magnet within 0.2 K. The mechanical stress and the displacement by the electromagnetic force and the thermal contraction are checked to verify structural stability. The structural analysis indicates that the mechanical stress on each component of the magnet is less than its material yield strength and the displacement is acceptable in comparison with the magnet dimension.

  • The technology of supplying the electric power by wireless power transfer (WPT) is expected for the next generation power feeding system since it can supply the power to portable devices without any connectors through large air gap. As such a technology based on strongly coupled electromagnetic resonators is possible to deliver the large power and recharge them seamlessly; it has been considered as a noble option to wireless power charging system in the various power applications. Recently, various HTS wires have now been manufactured for demonstrations of transmission cables, motors, MAGLEV, and other electrical power components. However, since the HTS magnets have a lower index n value intrinsically, they are required to be charged from external power system through leads or internal power system. The portable area is limited as well as the cryogen system is bulkier. Thus, we proposed a novel design of wireless power charging system for superconducting HTS magnet (WPC4SM) based on resonance coupling method. As the novel system makes possible a wireless power charging using copper resonance coupled coils, it enables to portable charging conveniently in the superconducting applications. This paper presented the conceptual design and operating characteristics of WPC4SM using different shapes' copper resonance coil. The proposed system consists of four components; RF generator of 370 kHz, copper resonance coupling coils, impedance matching (IM) subsystem and HTS magnet including rectifier system.
