Online condition assessment of high-speed trains based on Bayesian forecasting approach and time series analysis

  • High-speed rail (HSR) has been in operation and development in many countries worldwide. The explosive growth of HSR has posed great challenges for operation safety and ride comfort. Among various technological demands on high-speed trains, vibration is an inevitable problem caused by rail/wheel imperfections, vehicle dynamics, and aerodynamic instability. Ride comfort is a key factor in evaluating the operational performance of high-speed trains. In this study, online monitoring data have been acquired from an in-service high-speed train for condition assessment. The measured dynamic response signals at the floor level of a train cabin are processed by the Sperling operator, in which the ride comfort index sequence is used to identify the train's operation condition. In addition, a novel technique that incorporates salient features of Bayesian inference and time series analysis is proposed for outlier detection and change detection. The Bayesian forecasting approach enables the prediction of conditional probabilities. By integrating the Bayesian forecasting approach with time series analysis, one-step forecasting probability density functions (PDFs) can be obtained before proceeding to the next observation. The change detection is conducted by comparing the current model and the alternative model (whose mean value is shifted by a prescribed offset) to determine which one can well fit the actual observation. When the comparison results indicate that the alternative model performs better, then a potential change is detected. If the current observation is a potential outlier or change, Bayes factor and cumulative Bayes factor are derived for further identification. A significant change, if identified, implies that there is a great alteration in the train operation performance due to defects. In this study, two illustrative cases are provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method for condition assessment of high-speed trains.

  • This paper shows a study on the "Korean High Speed Train Design" method, its design process and the result in the form of aerodynamic optimal exterior design development of a prototype test train(HSR 350${\times}$). It was developed from 1996 until 2002, six years long in R '||'&'||' D project titled "Development of High Speed Railway Technology" The end result of the project is a prototype test train, which has two power cars, two motorized trailers and three trailers, had been tested successfully in the year 2003 to the highest speed limit 380km/h on high speed line. The improved conceptual design work of a new commercial train and next generation's train is also performed for future needs.uture needs.

  • The objective of this paper is to analysis & forecast on the change in spatial structures of southeast region by development of the Seoul-Pusan high-speed Rail. To measure the spatial structures, it was used the method of mean center and standard distance among of centrographic measures as analytical tools. The changes of spatial structures patten over time and space in the southeast region were surveyed using population and employment data of 57 zones. And also, to forecast the spatial structures of the southeast region after opening of the Seoul-Pusan high-speed rail, it was supposed three(3) scenarios which designed using influential area with centering around of the proposed high-speed rail stations. Therefore, the results of this research indicate as follows; 1) The spatial structures of population is showed a trend of continual concentration toward Ulsan city area, and also the spatial structures of employment is showed a trend of continual dispersion over time. 2) The forecast of three93) scenarios supposed after opening of the Seoul-Pusan high-speed rail in 2006 show a change of the spatial structures with both population concentration and employment dispersion. In the meantime, the rapid increase of population and wide dispersion of employment is reform with centering around HSR stations which builted in the southeast region after opening of high-speed rail. 3) It shall furnish valuable data to establish the development strategy of urban and local region, and also forecast the change of spatial structures about population and employment in influential area which passed on high-speed rail line & stations by method of mean center and standard distance among of centrographic measures as analytical tools.

Characteristics of Vibration of Track and Vehicle Body According to Type of Track in Tunnel of High-Speed Railway Lines (고속철도 터널에서의 궤도 형식에 따른 궤도와 차체의 진동 특성)

  • In the present study, in order to elucidate the vibration characteristics of track and train body according to the type of track in tunnel, the vibration accelerations of the track and the KTX train body have been measured in tunnels of Kyong-Bu high-speed railway(HSR) lines, and the frequency analysis of the measured data has been performed. From this, the vibration characteristics of the track components such as rail, sleeper, ballast and slab, the tunnel lining and the vehicle body according to the type of track are investigated and their relation is analyzed. The test results show that the vibration of rail and vehicle body rapidly increases at 80Hz in tunnel, and that is much higher in the tunnel on which the concrete slab track is placed. According to the results of the present study, rail supporting stiffness can variate the vibration characteristics of the total system including the vehicle, and therefore the correlation between the vibration of vehicle should be taken into account to determine the supporting stiffness of the slab track.

  • The domestic railway has high speed trains as good as those of countries outside Korea, but the schedule speed in the domestic railway, which is calculated by dividing distance to destination by time, is lower than that of overseas trains. The object of this study is the necessity for the improvement of schedule speed in the Kyeongbu High speed railway. This study was conducted with analyzing foreign cases related to the improvement of schedule speed in order to satisfy the increasing traffic demand. The schedule speed against the high speed of railway advanced countries is over 65%, while it is about 50% in the domestic railway. In conclusion, This study confirmed that there are possibilities and plans about the improvement of schedule speed for using TPS analysis in the Kyeongbu High speed railway.

  • 전기철도차량에서 발생되는 고조파전류는 각종 문제를 야기시킨다. 예를 들어 고조파전류의 발생은 인접통신선에의 유도장해를 일으키고 철도신호장애의 원인이 될 뿐만 아니라, 전원계통에 유입되는 경우에는 보호계전의 오작동을 일으키는 경우도 있다. 이에 고조파전류 발생을 줄이거나 차단하기 위하여 많은 연구가 진행되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 전기철도차량의 주행상태에 따라 차량에서 측정된 전압, 전류 값을 분석하여 고조파의 발생이 어떠한 관계가 있는지 분석하여 보았다.

  • To improve the riding comfort of high speed trains, it needs active suspension system for railway more and more. In Japan, the high speed train, Shinkansen has adopted semi active suspension system and now it is running in the main trunk. In Korea, Koeran Train Express (KTX) is opened to commercial traffic and Korea High speed Railway (HSR350) is being developed. So the vibration control of the high speed train becomes important. In this paper, we introduce technical skill of Japanese semi active suspension Shinkansen to be helpful to the related researcher.

  • For the domestic railways, we carry out the speed-up project for the maximum speed, came out of the plan on the schedule speed improvement, such as the Gyeongbu HSR 1st and 2nd step project and the speed-up project of the major trunk railways. As the speed increase, we shall review the conventional calculation methods for braking distances and identify the increase of braking distances. In this way, we shall secure the safe braking distances.

  • The purpose of this paper is to compensate the voltage drop of the power system in the AC High-Speed Railway (HSR). Reactive power compensation is often the most effective way to improve system voltage drop. The suitable modeling of the electric railway system should be applied to the EMTP. the dynamic characteristics of 3-Phase Induction Motor in Electric Railway Systems is considered for precise modeling. it is shown through EMTP simulation that voltage drop can be compensated effectively by STATCOM.

  • In this paper, new electric railway feeding system which has active transformer is modeled for evaluating the steady state analysis using PSCAD/EMTDC. Equivalent models including power supply, feeder, train and transformers are proposed for simplifying the model of the feeding system in high speed electric railway. In case study, simulation results applied to proposed model are compared with the conventional and new systems through the catenary voltage, three-phase voltage of PCC (Point of Common Coupling) and the efficiency of regenerative braking energy.
