  • The experimental results on the mechanical behavior of high-strength concretes subjected to high temperature were presented. Main variables were heating temperature, heating continuance time, and cooling condition. The compressive strength properties of high strength concrete(HSC) varied differently with temperature than those of normal strength concrete(NSC). HSC had higher rates of strength loss than NSC in the temperature range of between $20^{circ}C$ and $400^{circ}C$. Especially, HSC exploded in $400^{circ}C$ of high temperature.

  • In this study, the fundamental properties of High-Strength Concrete(HSC), such as the slump loss, the temperature increment, the strength development, are considered by experiment. In reducing the temperature and the slump loss, and developing the strength of HSC, the application of silica fume as an admixtures is very effective. And when gypsum is added, the slump loss is reduced and the strength of HSC is improved remarkably, but the temperature of concrete is increased, thus a more study to reduce the temperature increment is required

  • The behavior of concrete containing waste glass as a replacement of cement or aggregate was studied previously in the most of researches, but the present investigation focuses on the recycling of waste glass powder as a substitute for silica fume in high strength concrete (HSC). This endeavor deals with the efficiency of using waste glass powder, as an alternative for silica fume, in the flexural capacity of HSC beam. Thirteen members with dimensions of 0.3 m width, 0.15 m depth and 0.9 m span length were utilized in this work. A comparison study was performed considering HSC members and hybrid beams fabricated by HSC and conventional normal concrete (CC). In addition to the experiments on the influence of glass powder on flexural behavior, numerical analysis was implemented using nonlinear finite element approach to simulate the structural performance of the beams. Same constitutive relationships were selected to model the behavior of HSC with waste glass powder or silica fume to show the matching between the modeling outputs for beams made with these powders. The results showed that the loading capacity and ductility index of the HSC beams with waste glass powder demonstrated enhancing ultimate load and ductility compared with those of HSC specimens with silica fume. The study deduced that the recycled waste glass powder is a good alternative to the pozzolanic powder of silica fume.

  • Recently, it is very necessary the development of the manufacturing techniques for high strength concrete(HSC) for the large-scale size and good quality of civil structure. But, the manufacture and quality control of HSC of which shrinkage, heat of hydration and workability at construction filed are considered, is very difficult due to its low water-cement ratio and high quantity of unit cement content. In the present study, we tried to know and assess the influences of chemical and physical properties of cement on the material properties of HSC. We analyzed basic properties of 4 kinds of cement whose chemical and physical properties are different each other through various tests such as chemical analysis and mortal test. Also, we performed the assessment of the material properties of HSC for each dement by the test for the conditions of same mix design and similar compressive strength. From the results in the study, the assessment of the important quality factors of cement influencing the properties of HSC may be utilized to quality control of applied cement to manufacture the HSC of high quality.

  • High-strength concrete(HSC) is a new construction material with enormous potential. Structures using high-strength concrete are to be coming more and more popular. But high-strength reinforced concrete columns show brittle behavior. It, therefore, is necessary to improve the ductility of HSC members. The purpose of this study is to investigate the ductility and strength of high-strength columns with variable lateral confinement under concentric axial load. Five HSC columns with compressive strength 68㎫ are designed with variable lateral confinements such as carbon fiber sheet(CFS), glass fiber sheet(GFS), and metal lath. Test results indicate that specimen confined by CFS show 11% higher maximum strength, 2.74 times ductility than A specimen using hoop. On comparing with the specimen A and B confined metal lath instead of hoop, strength decrease of 3%, and ductility increase of 1.21 times were observed.

  • With the increase in the use of High-Strength Concrete(HSC) despite the its weakness like brittle characteristic, it is important to improve the performance of HSC columns, nowadays. Therefore, it is common to use higher strength steel in HSC for the purpose of ductility and strength improvement. This experimental study was set up to investigate the inelastic behavior of HSC(700kg/$cm^{2}$) columns subjected to combined axial and repeated lateral loads. Effects of key variables such as the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement, tie configuration and tie yield strength are studied in this research program. Test results indicate that inelastic response of HSC columns improve with proper confinement of core concrete. Increasing the amount of transverse reiuorement results in increased ductility.

  • The use of high-strength concrete (HSC) in precast concrete segmental bridges (PCSBs) can minimize the superstructure geometry and reduce beam weight, which can accelerate the construction speed. Dry joints between the segments in PCSBs introduce discontinuity and require special attention in design and construction. Cracks in dry joints initiate more easily than those in epoxy joints in construction period or in service. Due to the higher rupture strength of HSC, the higher cracking resistance can be achieved. In this study, shear behavior of dry joints in PCSBs was investigated by experiments, especially focusing on cracking resistance and shear strength of HSC dry joints. It can be concluded that the use of HSC can improve the cracking resistance, shear strength, and ductility of monolithic, single-keyed and three-keyed specimens. The experimental results obtained from tests were compared with the AASHTO 2003 design provisions. The AASHTO 2003 provision underestimates the shear capacity of single-keyed dry joint C50 and C70 HSC specimens, underestimates the shear strength of three-keyed dry joint C70 HSC specimens, and overestimates the shear capacity of three-keyed dry joint C50 HSC specimens.

  • The use of fly ash in cement and concrete industries has many benefits including engineering, economic, and ecological aspects. However, it has a disadvantage of low strength development, especially at early ages. In this study, in order to overcome this problem, the early strength accelerating agent($NA_{2}$ $SO_{4}$) was selected and applied to the production of high strength concrete(HSC) containing fly ash. It was found that the compressive strength of fly ash concrete incorporating TEX>$NA_{2}$ $SO_{4}$ has greater than that of concrete containing fly ash only until 7 days after casting. From the microstructural point of view, ettringite increased and pores decreased in fly ash concrete incorporating TEX>$NA_{2}$ $SO_{4}$ , leading to the development of early age strength. It was also found that the velocity vs. strength relationship of HSC is considerably different from that of low-strength concrete(LSC). Therefore, in order to predict early age strength of HSC, a estimation equation different from that for LSC is needed.

  • High strength concrete(HSC) has been mainly used in large SOC structures. HSC have superior property as well as improvement in durability compared with normal strength concrete. In spite of durability of HSC, explosive spalling in concrete front surface near the source of fire occurs serious problem in structural safety. It is reported that spalling is caused by the vapor pressure under fire and polypropylene(PP) fiber has an important role in protecting from spalling. The spalling properties of ultra high strength concrete specimens with various contents of PP fiber were investigated in this study. In results, the content of PP fiber for spalling protection increases over 0.2 vol.% as the concrete strength increases to 120 MPa.

  • Due to the confinement effects, Steel-Straps Tensioning Technique (SSTT) can significantly enhance the strength and ductility of high-strength concrete (HSC) members (Moghaddam et al. 2008). However, the enhancement especially in strength may result in slender member and more susceptible to instability (Jiang and Teng 2012a). This instability is particularly significant in HSC member as it inherent the brittle nature of the material (Galano et al. 2008). The current slenderness limit expression used in the design is mainly derived from the experiment and analysis results based on Normal strength concrete (NSC) column and therefore the direct application of these slenderness limit expressions to the HSC column is being questioned. Besides, a particular slenderness limit for the SSTT-confined HSC column which incorporated the pre-tensioned force and multilayers effects is not yet available. Hence, an analytical study was carried out in the view of developing a simple equation in order to determine the slenderness limit for HSC column confined with SSTT. Based on the analytical results, it was concluded that the existing slenderness limit expressions used in the design are appropriate for neither HSC columns nor SSTT-confined HSC columns. In this paper, a slenderness limit expression which has incorporated the SSTT-confinement effects is proposed. The proposed expression can also be applied to unconfined HSC columns.
