  • Objectives : The authors tried to investigate the characteristics of Heart Rate Variability(HRV) among the subjects with metabolic syndrome for testing the possibility of clinical application of HRV in evaluating metabolic syndrome. Methods : We examined the difference of the means of HRV between 122 subjects of metabolic syndrome and 1057 healthy controls using T-test, and the change of means in HRV according to increasing risk factors of metabolic syndrome. Using multiple regression analysis, we examined the association of HRV with the risk factors of metabolic syndrome. Results : The HRV indices including SDNN(Standard Deviation of all normal NN intervals), RMSSD(the square Root of the Mean Squared Differences of successive all normal NN interval), TP(Total Power), LF(Low Freuency), and HF(High Frequency) were significantly lower in the metabolic syndrome group than in the normal control group, and the means of all HRV indices except LF/HF were decreased consistently according to increasing risk factors of metabolic syndrome. The fasting glucose, triglyceride, and waist circumference were dependent factors that contributed significantly to the change of HRV. Conclusion : These findings suggest metabolic syndrome adversely affects cardiac autonomic system and HRV could be a useful method for evaluating metabolic syndrome.

  • Background and Purpose The increasing evidence for neurally mediated cardiac damage and sudden death has focused attention on the central autonomic control of cardiac function. Power spectral analysis of heart rate variability(HRV) can detect autonomic consequences of stroke. We performed power spectral analysis of heart rate variability from 24-hour holter recording to identify cerebral hemispheric lateralization and gender effect in cardiac autonomic control. Methods Data were obtained from 24-hour holter recordings in 30 consecutive patients with hemispheric brain infarction in the subacute phase. We analysed the time domain and frequency domain measures of HRV and ST segment by hemispheric lateralization and Gender. Results ST segment was depressed in women compared with man. There was no statistically significant differences between right and left hemisphere stroke patients in any standard index of HRV and ST segment changes. Conclusions These data are partial consistent with evidence from the recent literature that two cerebral hemispheres and gender have a differential influence on the nature and severity of cardiac dysfunction. We think the prospective and definite study was necessary.

  • Objectives : The aim of our study was to demonstrate the clinical application of a diagnosis relating the 7-zone-diagnostic system and heart rate variability. Materials and Methods : Subjects were divided into two groups according to the factor AA form of the 7-zone-diagnostic system(VEGA-DFM722, VEGA, Germany). Subjects in group A showed a factor-AA red bar graph in which zone 2 was higher than the normal range, and zone 6 was lower than the normal range. Subjects in group B showed a factor-AA red bar graph in which zone 2 was lower than the normal range, and zone 6 was higher than the normal range. We investigated how to differentiate the index of heart-rate variability(HRV, LX-3202, LAXTHA, Korea) for each group. We did independent sample t-tests and evaluated the results of the HRV at the 5% significance level using SPSS 10.0 for Windows. Results : The differences of the MeanRR, MeanHRV, SDNN, complexity, HRV-index, RMSSD, SDSD, and pNN50 values between the groups was not significant. The differences of the Ln(TP), Ln(VLF), Ln(HF), LF/(LF+HF), LF/HF, norm LF, and norm HF values between the groups was also not significant. The differences were not significant, but generally the values of SDNN, complexity, RMSSD, SDSD, Ln(VLF), Ln(HF) and norm LF for group B were higher than those for group A, and the values of pNN50 and norm HF for group B were lower than those for group A. Conclusions : This study suggests that differences in the HRV values between the groups was not significant, but group B has a tendency to be healthier than group A because of stress. Accordingly, further study will be required.

  • Objectives : Cold hypersensitivity has been regarded to be associated with Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). This study aims to investigate the indicator of cold hypersensitivity of hands and evaluate the correlation between indicator of coldness of hands and Heart Rate Variability (HRV). Methods : We studied 55 patients with cold hypersensitivity of hands who visited in SeMyung University Hospital from 17 August 2015 to 21 August 2015. Thermometer and VAS scale were used for the diagnosis of cold hypersensitivity. After careful examination to rule out other disease which may affect thermometer and HRV data, patients were taken thermometer, those with thermal difference between upper arm (L4) and palm(P8), also asked to answer a VAS scale of cold hypersensitivity of hands, VAS more than 4 were enrolled for evaluation. Results : There was significant correlation between L4-P8 temperature difference and VAS score of cold hypersensitivity. In HRV data, normalized high frequency (HF normal) was significantly correlated with L4-P8 temperature difference, which was objective indicator of cold hypersensitivity of hands. Conclusions : L4-P8 temperature difference using thermometer is objective indicator of cold hypersensitivity, based on VAS scale. Cold hypersensitivity is highly related with ANS, regulating body heat and temperature. HRV is considered to be widely used in cold hypersensitivity in hands for evaluation of ANS.

  • Objectives We observed what effects of Paced Breathing(PB) in specific respiration rate have on heart rate variability (HRV) according to Sasang Constitution. Methods HRV of 72 healthy participants in sitting position was recorded while they carried out usual breathing, 0.2Hz, 0.1Hz, and 0.05Hz PB each 5 minutes in consecutive order. Five minute of relaxation was permitted between each breathing. Finally, HRV indices were statictically analyzed of 32 participants (SOEUM: 11, SOYANG: 10, TAEEUM: 11) after data out of accord with respiration rate or outliers were excluded. Results and Conclusions According to respiration rates, there was no statistical significance of HRV among Sasang Constitution. Regardless of Sasang Constituion, 0.2Hz PB increased mean heart rate and decreased natural logarithmic low frequency(lnLF) oscillation of HRV without the change of natural logarithmic high frequency(lnHF), while 0.1Hz PB increased lnLF and standard deviation of N-N interval(SDNN), and slightly decreased lnHF without the change of mean heart rate. 0.05 Hz PB also showed the same effect as 0.1Hz PB, but was impracticable.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term effects of electrical massager on stress-related parameters including heart rate variability (HRV), heart rate (HR) using the photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal with motion artifact correction. Twenty healthy subjects were randomly allocated to receive a 15-min section of three types ((1) resting mode (control group), (2) light massage mode, (3) strong massage mode). Results indicated that self-report, VAS (Visual Analog Scale) significantly decreased for two massage modes after massage except control group. In strong massage mode, it was associated with significant increases in HF, but significant decreases in LF and LH/HF ratio compared with the light massage mode. For all outcomes, similar changes were not observed in the control group. Also, the result founded that mean HR of all groups decrease. We conclude that electrical massager reduces perceived stress and improves adaptive autonomic response to stress in healthy adults.
