  • HEVC is the latest joint video coding standard with ITU-T SG16 WP and ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11. Its coding efficiency is about two times compared to H.264 high profile. Intra prediction has 35 directional modes including dc and planer. However an accurate mode decision on lots of modes with SSE is too costly to implement it with hardware. The key idea of this paper is a DCT shared architecture to reduce the complexity of HEVC intra encoder. It is to use same DCT block to quantize as well as to calculate SSE in RDO. The proposed intra encoder uses two step mode decision to lighten complexity with simplified RDO blocks and shares the transform resources. Its BD-rate increase is negligible at 20% on hardware aspect and the operating clock frequency is 300MHz@60fps on FHD ($1920{\times}1080$) image.

  • In this paper, the technical analysis and characteristics of screen content coding (SCC) based on High efficiency video coding (HEVC) are presented. For SCC, which is increasingly used these days, HEVC SCC standardization has been proceeded. Technologies such as intra block copy (IBC), palette coding, and adaptive color transform are developed and adopted to the HEVC SCC standard. This paper examines IBC and palette coding that significantly impacts RD performance of SCC for screen content. The HEVC SCC reference model (SCM) 4.0 was used to comparatively analyze the coding performance of HEVC SCC based on the HEVC range extension (RExt) model for screen content.

  • High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), the latest video coding standard, has twice of the compression efficiency compared to AVC/H.264 under the same image quality condition. To obtain the improved efficiency, however, it was adopted for many methods which need complicated calculation, and the time complexity of HEVC was increased more than that of AVC/H.264. To solve this problem, the various fast algorithms have been researched. In this paper, we propose a fast intra prediction mode decision method which uses result of Rough Mode Decision (RMD) and Most Probable Mode (MPM). The proposed method selects a best predicted mode by comparing each predicted directions which are calculated through RMD and MPM. We applied the proposed method to HM 10.0 and conducted an comparing experiment in All-Intra environment. The experiment result showed that total encoding time is reduced by about 26% on average with about a 0.8% loss of BD-rate.

  • The RDO (Rate Distortion Optimization) process of HEVC results in good coding efficiency, but relatively requires much encoding time. In order to reduce the encoding time of RDO process, this paper proposes a method of fast intra prediction mode decision using DCT coefficients distributions and the existence of DCT coefficients. The proposed fast Intra coding sets the number of intra prediction mode candidates to three(3) from the RMD (Rough Mode Decision) process in HM16.0 reference SW and reduces the number of candidates one more time by investigating DCT coefficients distribution. After that, if there exists a quantized DCT block having all zero coefficient values for a specific candidate before the RDO process, the candidate is chosen without the RDO process. The proposed method reduces the encoder complexity on average 46%, while the coding efficiency is 2.1% decreased compared with the HEVC encoder.

  • Versatile Video Coding (VVC), which has been developing as a next generation video coding standard, has adopted various techniques to achieve more than twice the compression performance of HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding). The recently released VVC Test Model (VTM) shows 38% Bjontegaard Delta bitrate (BD-rate) improvement and 9x/1.6x encoding/decoding complexity over HEVC. In order to reduce such increased complexity, various fast algorithms have been proposed. In this paper, gradient-based methods of fast intra mode decision and block splitting are presented. Experimental results show that, compared to VTM6.0, the proposed method gives up to 65% encoding time reduction with 3.54% BD-rate loss in All-Intra (AI) configuration.

  • The High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard provides superior coding efficiency by utilizing highly flexible block structure and more diverse coding modes. However, rate-distortion optimization (RDO) process for the decision of optimal block size and prediction mode requires excessive computational complexity. To alleviate the computation load, this paper proposes a new moment-based fast CU size decision algorithm for intra coding in HEVC. In the proposed method, moment values are computed in each CU block to estimate the texture complexity of the block from which the decision on an additional CU splitting procedure is performed. Unlike conventional methods which are mostly variance-based approaches, the proposed method incorporates the third-order moments of the CU block in the design of the fast CU size decision algorithm, which enables an elaborate classification of CU types and thus improves the RD-performance of the fast algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed method saves 32% encoding time with 1.1% increase of BD-rate compared to HM-10.0, and 4.2% decrease of BD-rate compared to the conventional variance-based fast algorithm.

  • The High Efficiency Video Coding (MPEG-H HEVC/ITU-T H.265) is the newest video coding standard which has the quadtree-structured coding unit (CU). The quadtree-structure splits a CU adaptively, and its optimum CU depth can be determined by rate-distortion optimization. Such HEVC encoding requires very high computational complexity for CU depth decision. Motivated that the blob detection, which is a well-known algorithm in computer vision, detects keypoints in pictures and decision of CU depth needs to consider high frequency energy distribution, in this paper, we propose to utilize these keypoints for fast CU depth decision. Experimental results show that 20% encoding time can be saved with only slightly increasing BDBR by 0.45% on all intra case.

  • This paper proposes an early termination method of a block vector search for fast encoding of high efficiency video coding (HEVC) screen content coding (SCC). In the proposed algorithm, two blocks indicated by two block vector predictors (BVPs) were first employed as an intra block copy (IBC) search. If the sum of absolute difference (SAD) value of the block is less than a threshold defined empirically, an IBC BV search is terminated early. The initial threshold for early termination is derived by statistical analysis and it can be modified adaptively based on a quantization parameter (QP). The proposed algorithm is evaluated on SCM-2.0 under all intra (AI) coding configurations. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm reduces IBC BV search time by 29.23% on average while the average BD-rate loss is 0.41% under the HEVC SCC common test conditions (CTC).

  • In this paper, we present a method to reduce complexity of depth modeling modes (DMM) that are used in the current 3D-HEVC standardization. DMM adds four modes to the existing HEVC intra prediction modes for accurate object edge representation in the depth map. Especially, Mode 3 requires distortion calculation of numerous pre-defined wedgelets, inducing high complexity. The proposed method employs absolute differences of neighboring pixels in the sides of the reference block to find high intensity changing positions. Based on such positions, the number of wedgelet candidates is reduced to six and distortion calculation is skipped for irrelevant wedgelets. Experimental results show complexity reduction by 3.1% on average, while maintaining similar coding performance.
