  • As the demand for higher areal recording densities requires a lower flying height of the slider, the variation of the flying height of the slider during drive operation becomes of great concern. The variation of the flying height is closely related with the slider design parameters such as air bearing shape, cavity depth, shallow step depth, crown, camber, pitch offset, roll offset, gram load, and so on. The objective of this work is to optimize the cavity depth and the shallow step depth, which are the control factors in air bearing design, using Robust Design method. It was found that the shallow step depth was statistically significant in affecting the variation of flying height, therefore the level of the shallow step depth should be chosen to minimize the variation of flying height.

  • The three-dimensional estimation on the depth and height of flaw by using the difference of radiographic contrast density was studied. First, the specimens having artificial flaws of various depths and heights were prepared and the radiographic testing was performed. The radiographic depth of flaw was investigated and estimated on the effect of the scattered radiation with the change of distance between flaw and film. The height of flaw was estimated from the radiographic test with the reference specimen. The radiographic contrast with flaw depth decreased with increasing the flaw depth. The scattered radiation increased with increasing flaw depth and varied with the location between flaw and film. However, in the case of flaw height, the contrast density increased with increasing flaw height. It is thought due to the change in volume generating the scattered radiation which reaches a film.

  • The purpose of this study was to find a suitable standard height of the lavatory in public spaces through the review of relevant regulations, questionnaire survey, lab works, and experiment to measure lavatory heights. The results of the study were as follows: First, the heights of the current public lavatory were ranged from 68cm to 89cm, and the heights to the faucet were from 71cm to 91cm. The recent lavatory was more likely to be higher in heights. Secondly, the suitable height for public lavatory was ranged from 55% to 65% of the heights of the participants put on shoes. Thirdly, 90cm lavatory in height was considered to be more suitable to use for the majority than was 83cm lavatory. Fourth, the author suggest that the suitable y(lavatory height)=77.818 + 0.117x(put on shoes heights). This study suggested that adopting 95% range, the most suitable height of public lavatory is more than 90cm high for the people whose heights are more than 150cm.

  • Some new problems of the theory of the finite automata are considered. Applying the finite automata in various tasks of the formal languages theory is observed. Special proof of Kleene's theorem is obtained. This proof is used for the defining the star-height of the finite automaton. The proper-ties of the last object are considered. The star-height of the finite automaton is used for reformulating the star-height problem of regular expression for finite automata. The method of the reduction of the star-height problem to the task of making special finite automaton is obtained. This reformulating can help to solve the star-height problem by new way.

  • Air springs are designed to support loads using the volume elasticity in a cylindrical shaped air bag made of a composite material with a rubber matrix and two plies of reinforced fibers. Recently, applications of these springs have been expanded from railway vehicles to passenger cars. The current study presents a finite element analysis of a manufactured air spring for a passenger car. The analysis was conducted including the mounting steps of the air bag using a static loading condition. A method for controlling the internal pressure and displacements during the mounting step was developed. The characteristic load curve and the shape of the air bag were in good agreement with the experimental data with respect to the design height, the bump height and the rebound height. Results indicate that ply angles of fibers vary from 38 degrees to 56 degrees during static loading.

  • If the sea is narrowband, the Rayleigh distribution introduced by Longuet-Higgins can be used for the individual wave height distribution. However the Rayleigh distribution over-predicts the probability of high waves. Longuet-Higgins introduced alternative form of the Rayleigh distribution with an empirical constant. The wave height distribution can be fitted well by one parameter Rayleigh distribution with a proper choice of the empirical constant. The empirical constant is the ratio of the significant wave height based the time domain analysis and the spectral analysis. Here we examine wave data which contain extreme waves. Once again we confirmed that extreme wave height distribution can be modelled well by a modified Rayleigh distribution.

  • Height growth models for Pinus thunbergii in Jeju Island were developed in this study using four widely used nonlinear growth models; Exponential, Modified Logistic, Chapman-Richards, and Weibull. All functions were found to be significant at the 1% level. Chapman-Richards model for height-DBH allometry and Weibull model for height-age allometry was chosen as the best model on the all validation. All the model curves showed the similar pattern. Additionally, there was no abnormal pattern when the previous studies were compared. Therefore, these models are highly expected to be used to estimate the tree height using DBH or age for Pinus thunbergii especially in Jeju Island.

  • We estimated phenotypic selection on the height and number of flowering-stalks in a rosette annual Cardamine hirsuta by applying path analysis to the data collected at three natural populations located in central Japan. The path from rosette size was positively connected with the fruit production through the both height and number of flowering-stalks. In the all three populations, the paths from the number of stalks were more strongly connected with the fruit production than from the height of stalks. The paths from the rosette size showed similar magnitude with the number of stalks and the height of stalks. The direct path from rosette size to the fruit production was detected only at one site. These results suggest stronger phenotypic selection on the rosette size through the number of stalks than the height of stalks. The lateral branching rather than increment of individual inflorescence size is the major response to control the fruit production for C. hirsuta growing in a natural habitat.

  • In many applications of UAVs flying in low altitude, the steady supply of accurate height measurements is very important for the UAVs to complete their mission successfully. In order to do this, a barometer or GPS height measurements are widely used. However, because these two sensors have their limitations in the application environment, a method for fusing these two measurements to produce reference heights are required. In this paper, a reference height generation filter is designed for UAV(Unmanned Air Vehicle) applications. The barometer errors originated by the change of the atmospheric environment are modeled using random walk models, and then the errors are identified and compensated through the ZSB(zero-scan-back) filter algorithm using the GPS height measurements. The performance of the proposed filter is demonstrated by realistic simulations.

  • To achieve lower flying height for high areal recording density, the laser zone texturing of the disk needs to be designed to reduce glide height. One problem of the laser bump design is that the regular laser bump pattern often produces glide resonance phenomenon, which leads to failure of the glide height test. However, it was found in this study that glide resonance is an intrinsic problem of the glide head used and resonance phenomenon depends on the type of the head slider, that is, the natural frequency of the slider body. Therefore, higher glide height or glide failure caused by glide resonance does not lead to head/media interface problem in the real drive operating conditions in which the data head is used. Pseudo-random bump pattern greatly reduces the glide resonance. Smaller bump pitch will also help to reduce the glide resonance. However, as bump spacing becomes smaller, glide height will be increased due to increased air pressure developed around the bumps. Lowering bump height is the most effect way to reduce glide avalanche.
