  • It is essential to reduce stiction between the slider and the disk for super-smooth media such as glass disk for high density recording. We developed a stiction-reduced slider by fabricating mechanical bumps on the air bearing surface of the slider by indentation technique. This paper presents a possibility and concept of Stiction-Free-Slider which can operate on the data zone of a magnetic disk. The slider hat many bumps and their heights are in the tens of nm range. The SFS shows good performance on the data zone. Moreover, little wear of the bumps was observed when the preload was small.

  • This study presents a method for determining stiffness and damping coefficients of 30% U slider-air bearings by using perturbation method, and shows that this method is more accurate than steady state method according to the comparison of those with the modal analysis method. Through a generalized lubrication equation, which based on linealized Boltzmann equation, the static and dynamic pressure distributions are calculated by finite volume method.

  • There are some concepts that could achieve Near-Field Recording (NPR). One of concepts is the use of the flying head with Solid Immersion Lens (SIL). The basic concept of this is almost same with that of Hard Disk Drive (HDD). This study presents the flying characteristics of the slider for NFR. Numerical simulations are performed using FEM and Broydon-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) method. Some modifications are considered to improve flying characteristics of the slider.

  • The tribocharge build-up in the slider disk interface can cause ESD (electrostatic discharge) damage. In turn, ESD can cause severe melting damage to MR or GMR heads. We investigated the tribovoltage/current build-up with smooth and textured disks in HDD, operating at increasing disk accelerations. We found that tribe-voltage/current were generated during pico-slider/disk interaction and those levels were about 0.1 ${\~}$ 0.3 V and 10 ${\~}$ 40 pA, respectively. Tribovoltage/current were abruptly increased and dissipated within the acceleration time in the case of textured disk but in the case of smooth disk tribovoltage was continuously increased until the end of uniform velocity region and the tribocurrent did not dissipate within the acceleration time. In the case of textured dist tribovoltage/current was reduced with increasing disk acceleration, but in the case of smooth disk it was increased.

  • Recently, load/unload(L/UL) process is applied to a computer information storage device due to its advantages such as lower power consumption, larger data zone, simpler fabrication of disk for no bumped parking zone, and rarer contact between the slider and media. An analysis of the transient motion for the slider is very important to design an air bearing surface (ABS) of the slider to secure the stable performance of the system. During the L/UL process, however, there are several issues occurred such as contact or collision between slider and media. Sometimes this will cause the system failure. In this study, the dynamics of the slider during the loading process are investigated through a numerical simulation using FEM analysis and experiment.

  • Head Disk Interface (HDI) in a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) has decreased to achieve high areal density. Thus, the contact between a slider and a disk becomes more important. The contact between the slider and the disk can cause severe wear and damage of both the slider and the disk. Especially, Touch Down (TD) that the contact occurs continuously and repeatedly is extremely dangerous. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the unstable bouncing vibration of the slider in head-disk interface. In this paper, we investigate the characteristic and causes of the Touch Down.

  • Optimal shape of the NFR suspension is studied and developed to improve the dynamic performance and reduce the vibration of the suspension system including a optical head slider. Since accurate position control and stability of the slider motion are highly required in NFR due to the narrower track width and the heavier slider than HDD slider with the low flying height, the dynamic characteristics of the suspension are very important to the mechanical performance of the system. The first natural frequencies in flexural and lateral motion of the suspension are critical factors affecting the dynamics and stability of the flying head, so that the dynamic parameters should be designed properly to avoid an excessive vibration or a crash of the slider on the disk. This paper optimizes the shape of the suspension based on homogenization method in NASTRAN and develops a new suspension shape for NFR system. The suspension is tested on experiment to verify the improvement of the dynamic characteristics.

  • As the demand for higher areal recording densities requires a lower flying height of the slider, the variation of the flying height of the slider during drive operation becomes of great concern. The variation of the flying height is closely related with the slider design parameters such as air bearing shape, cavity depth, shallow step depth, crown, camber, pitch offset, roll offset, gram load, and so on. The objective of this work is to optimize the cavity depth and the shallow step depth, which are the control factors in air bearing design, using Robust Design method. It was found that the shallow step depth was statistically significant in affecting the variation of flying height, therefore the level of the shallow step depth should be chosen to minimize the variation of flying height.

  • In most hard disk drives that apply the ramp load/unload technology, the head is unloaded at the outer edge of the disk while the disk is rotating. During the unloading process, slider-disk contacts may occur by lift-off force and rebound of the slider. The main issue of this paper is to prevent the slider-disk contact by rebound, and we apply a disk bump to the unloading process. To do so, first, the ranges of bump dimension are determined. Second, the stability of each bump is checked by dynamic simulation. Finally, unload simulations are performed for stable bump designs. As a result of these steps, the effect of the bump design and the position for the unloading performance were investigated. As a consequence, we propose the optimal bump design to improve the unloading performance. Furthermore, we can identify to remove rebound contact by applying a bump on disk during the unloading process.

  • As the flying height of a slider in a hard disk drive decreases, the slider and disk are more likely to come in contact and generate contamination particles. Since particle contamination can cause serious problems including thermal asperity, it must be prevented to increase storage capacity. When particles are generated in a HDD, particles can be charged and have a few number of elementary charges. In this paper, the size distribution of particles and electrical current due to particle according to the disk rotational speed were measured. Also, the average number of elementary charges was calculated from experimental data. SEM images of particles were obtained by using a particle sampler designed in our laboratory.
