  • Backcross hybridization between female cyprinid loach(Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) any male mud loach (M. mizolepis)$\times$cyjprinid loach hybrid were made, and its effect on early survival, cytogenetic traits, and gonad development were examined. Mean fertilization rate and hatching success of backcross hybrids were similar to those found in the maternal species, the cyprinid loach. However, the backcross hybrids revealed significantly improved early survival up to yolk sac absorption (86.0%) compared to cyprinid loach (0%) under low culture temperature ($15^{\circ}C$). the erythrocytic size and DNA content of backcross hybrids were nearly intermediate to those of the parents. Karyological analysis of backcross hybrids displayed two kinds of modal chromosome number of 2n=48 or 2n=49. Growth of backcross hybrids over 6 months after hatching was proven to be intermediate between their parental species. Although backcross hybrids had intermediate values between those of thier parents in most morphometric traits, overall external morphology of backcross hybrids was morer simlar to cyprinid loach than mud loach$\times$cyprinid loach hybrid. Histological examination of gonads at 2 and 4 months of age revealed that no female was obseved in backcross hybrid groups, suggesting the possibility of production of monosex male population.

  • Development and growth of Acartia steueri from Ilkwang Bay, southeastern coast of Korea, were determined under various temperatures and food condition (Isochrysis galbana and Dunaliella salina) in the laboratory. Relationship between egg hatching time ($D_E$, day) and temperature (T, $^{\circ}C$) was $D_E=744(T+3.5)^{-1.97}$. Mean hatching success was $88.4\%$ in temperature range of $8.4\~26.2^{\circ}C$. This suggests that A. steueri may be adapted to the temperature ranges in temperate regions. Post-embryonic development pattern was equiproportional rather than isochronal, with longer stage duration of copepodites than that of the nauplii. Stage duration of NI was the shortest of all developmental stages, while the duration of NII was the longest in duration of the other nauplii. Male was morphologically distinguished from female in CIV stage, and male was developed faster than female. Median development time at a given temperature was calculated from the Belehradek equation by proper multiplication of proportional constant for embryonic development. Body carbon weight at $19.1^{\circ}C$ was increased exponentially with time. Mean specific growth rate of nauplii (0.200 $d^{-1}$), except for NI stage, was not significantly different from that of copepodites (0.190 $d^{-1}$), with the lowest rate in NVI stage (0.107 $d^{-1}$), probably due to energy consumption for metamorphosis rather than somatic growth. The results suggest that although the development pattern determined in this study was not identical with Uye's result for A. steueri (e.g. Uye, 1980b), median development time may be applicable to calculate the stage duration of A. steueri in this study area.

  • Backcross hybridization between Korean bullhead Pseudobagrus fulvidraco female and Korean bullhead P. fulvidraco $\times$ Ussurian bullhead Leiocassis ussuriensis hybrid male was performed, and early viability and karyotype of the backcross hybrids were examined along with their parental species. Mean fertilization rate (86.8%), hatching success (70.7%) and early survival rate (76.4%) of backcross hybrids were similar with those found in the maternal species, the Korean bullhead. From the chromosome analysis, modal chromosome numbers of Korean bullhead, Ussurian bullhead, their hybrid and backcross hybrid were the same as 2n = 52. However, their karyotypes were different among genotypes. The karyotype of backcross hybrid was 22 metacentric + 18 submetacentacentric + 12 acrocentric chromosomes.

  • This study was conducted to examine the impact of various environmental factors on the feeding behavior of black-faced spoonbills Platalea minor known to use rice fields during the breeding season. We surveyed the rice fields three times a month from April to June 2017 and from April to June 2018. We counted the number of black-faced spoonbills and measured the environmental factors such as the water depth, paddy type by cultivation stage, and biomass of potential prey that are expected to affect black-faced spoonbills. We also filmed the feeding behavior of black-faced spoonbills to examine differences in feeding behavior by environmental factors. The survey showed that the number of black-faced spoonbills reached its peak from late April to late May which was the breeding period. Among a total of 308 black-faced spoonbills observed, 86.4% (n=266) were observed feeding on rice paddies, 90.6% (n=279) were adults, and none was observed on dry paddies. The biomass of rice paddy increased significantly since May when fish started hatching, and there was a significant difference in the amount of biomass between the rice paddies where black-faced spoonbills were observed and other rice paddies. The analysis of the feeding behavior of black-faced spoonbills showed that the feeding efficiency and feeding success rate of black-faced spoonbills increased significantly when the amount of biomass soared and that the number of steps of black-faced spoonbills per minute increased greatly after rice planting was completed. The number of bill sweeping was not related to the feeding efficiency, feeding success rate, and paddy type by cultivation stage.

  • Betta rubra, classified as endangered fish species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), has been successfully bred and raised in captivity for two generations under laboratory conditions. This study aimed to provide comprehensive information on the captive breeding of B. rubra, focusing on various parameters crucial for ex-situ conservation and domestication. The research involved breeding trials, embryo and larvae observation, first feeding experiments, larva and fry rearing trials, and the evaluation of growth and reproduction in two generations. The study revealed that the female B. rubra, with an average total length of 5.17 ± 0.15 cm and weight of 1.61 ± 0.06 g, produced an average of 73.67 ± 7.09 eggs, 34.33 ± 5.13 total larvae, and exhibited a hatching rate of 46.67 ± 5.77%. The embryogenesis process commenced on the day of spawning (dps) and continued until the eggs hatched at 6 dps. Larvae development and yolk absorption occurred from 0 to 6 days post-hatching (dph). The study also examined the impact of different initial feeding options, with chopped Tubifex resulting in the most significant in- crease (p < 0.05) in length. The growth pattern of B. rubra larvae showed slow initial growth during the first seven days, followed by a rapid exponential growth phase from day 8 to day 39. Two generations of B. rubra (G1 and G2) were successfully bred in captivity, with G2 showing a better tendency for growth in length and weight compared to G1. Notably, there were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in reproductive success between the wild-origin broodstock (G0), G1, or G2. This research contributes valuable insights into the captive breeding of B. rubra and its early life stages, offering critical information for the conservation and sustainable management of this endangered species. Further research is needed to explore the long-term effects of domestication on behavior, physiology, and phenotypic diversity.

  • The acute and chronic toxicity of ambient and effluent water discharged to Lake Shihwa were investigated by using Vibrio fischeri, Daphnia magna and Oryzias latipes. Physicochemical characteristics including biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and nine heavy metals in a total of 15 water samples were evaluated and were satisfied with relevant Korean Water Quality Standards (KWQS) except for Hg in one sample. Acute toxicity was observed in five samples collected from three sampling locations. When impacts on reproduction and growth after chronic exposure were evaluated with D. magna, all the samples showed significant chronic effects. Reproduction appeared relatively more sensitive endpoint. In 21 days chronic tests on O. latipes, survival, mean egg number per female per day, hatching success rate and time to hatch were affected by increasing sample concentration. The organ-level changes such as gonadosomatic index (GSI), and hepatosomatic index (HSI), and molecular biomarker of vitellogenin (Vtg) induction that evaluated with O. latipes increased as exposure concentrations increased. It is noteworthy that the samples that did not exceed the KWQS resulted in acute and chronic toxicities. The results suggested that numeric criteria based on physicochemical parameters may not be protective of aquatic ecosystem. Acute and chronic toxicity tests with organisms representing different trophic groups should be supplemented in order to provide adequate level of environmental protection.

  • This study was conducted to identify nesting habits and breeding biology of barn swallow in Gwangju, Korea, for the breeding season 2012 to 2014. All nests were attached to vertical walls and roofs of buildings and situated at mean height $2.9{\pm}0.3m$ above ground with nest diameter $18.2{\pm}3.2cm$, nest depth $9.8{\pm}3.1cm$, nest cup diameter $11.2{\pm}1.5cm$ and nest cup depth $3.27{\pm}0.80cm$. Nests were attached to cemented walls (44.9%), wooden materials (23.1%), bricks (21.8%) and lighting (6.4%). The average clutch size was 4.5 and ranged 2~5. Mean egg length was $18.23{\pm}0.73mm$, breadth $13.11{\pm}0.25mm$, volume $1.60{\pm}0.11cm^3$, shape index $1.39{\pm}0.05$ and weight $1.69{\pm}0.15g$. Hatching and fledgling success rate were 89.1% and 84.5%. Main causes for reproductive failures were unhatched eggs, predation, nest destruction and desertion. These results are expected to be widely used as data for habitat preservation and species management of barn swallows.

  • This study focused on relationships between Pb and Cd concentrations and the difference of success reproductive progress in urban (Seoul) and industrial complex (Ansan) areas. Results of the Pb analysis for the feral pigeons from Seoul (egg contents:1.64 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$, adults in bones: 29.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$ and the Ansan industrial complex (egg contents: 1.13 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$, adults in bones: 10.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet g-1) showed that the Pb level of eggs and adults is significantly different between the two colonies (p<0.05). Cd concentrations in liver and kidneys of adult pigeons were also significantly different between Seoul(liver: 0.24 ${\mu}g$ wet $g^{-1}$, kidney: 1.05 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$ and the Ansan (liver: 0.14 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$, kidney: 0.43 $\mu\textrm{g}$ wet $g^{-1}$ colonies (P<0.05). Clutch size of Feral Pigeons living in Seoul was similar between the two colonies, 1.9$\pm$0.3 in Seoul and 2.0$\pm$0.0 in Ansan. The length, breadth, and thickness of eggs were not significantly different between the two colonies (p>0.05). Incubation period in Seoul (17.8 days) did not differ from the Ansan (17.4 days). No difference in growth rate (body weight, wing length, and tarsus length) was found between the two test groups (p>0.05). In Seoul, 65.2% were hatching, and 42.1% fledging. The Proportion of hatching and fledging in the Ansan was 60.7% and 45.0%, respectively. The significant differences between the two colonies for reproductive sucess were not found (p>0.05). With regard to the reproductive effects to the heavy metals, the Pb and Cd concentrations feund in the two colonies were not as high as those considered in results of toxic effects in other species.

  • Induced breeding and indoor rearing of the catfish, Silurus asotus were performed. Ovulation was induced by injection of 5 mg dried carp pituitary per kg body weight. Fertilization rates were $81.5\~98.0{\%}$ and hatching success was $67.0\~82.0{\%}$. There were no significant differences of daily growth rate (DGR) and food conversion ratio (FCR) between the groups fed extruded eel pellet and extruded carp pellet. No significant differences in DGR and FCR were also found between $3{\%}$ and $4{\%}$ daily feeding rates. DGR and FCR of small fry were slightly affected by dissolved oxygen (DO) level in aquaria. When the DO level maintained at $4.5\;mg/{\ell}$, the best result was obtained and DGR and FCR were $5.7{\%}$ and 0.65, respectively. At the higher level of DO, $5.5\;mg/{\ell}$, DGR and FCR were $5.52{\%}$ and 0.77, respectively, whereas at the lower level of DO, $3.5\;mg/{\ell}$, the DGR was decreased to $3.45{\%}$ and FCR was increased up to 1.01.
