Hand gesture recognition based on vision is a challenging task in human-robot interaction. The sign language of finger spelling alphabets has been tested as a kind of hand gesture. In this paper, we test hand gesture recognition by detecting the contour shape and orientation of hand with visual image. The method has three stages, the first stage of finding hand component separated from the background image, the second stage of extracting the contour feature over the hand component and the last stage of comparing the feature with the reference features in the database. Here, finger spelling alphabets are used to verify the performance of our system and our method shows good performance to discriminate finger alphabets.

This paper presents a visual touch recognition for NUI(Natural User Interface) using Voronoi-tessellation algorithm. The proposed algorithms are three parts as follows: hand region extraction, hand feature point extraction, visual-touch recognition. To improve the robustness of hand region extraction, we propose RGB/HSI color model, Canny edge detection algorithm, and use of spatial frequency information. In addition, to improve the accuracy of the recognition of hand feature point extraction, we propose the use of Douglas Peucker algorithm, Also, to recognize the visual touch, we propose the use of the Voronoi-tessellation algorithm. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility and applicability of the proposed algorithms through some experiments.

This paper deals with a similarity decision method between the shape of hand-postures and their structures to improve performance of the vision-based hand-posture recognition system. Hand-posture recognition by vision sensors has difficulties since the human hand is an object with high degrees of freedom, and hence grabbed images present complex self-occlusion effects and, even for one hand-posture, various appearances according to viewing directions. Therefore many approaches limit the relative angle between cameras and hands or use multiple cameras. The former approach, however, restricts user's operation area. The latter requires additional considerations on the way of merging the results from each camera image to get the final recognition result. To recognize hand-postures, we use both of appearance and structural features and decide the similarity between the two types of features by learning.

A new method to govern the navigation of a mobile robot using hand gesture recognition is proposed based on the following two procedures. One is to achieve vision information by using a 2-DOF camera as a communicating medium between a man and a mobile robot and the other is to analyze and to control the mobile robot according to the recognized hand gesture commands. In the previous researches, mobile robots are passively to move through landmarks, beacons, etc. In this paper, to incorporate various changes of situation, a new control system that manages the dynamical navigation of mobile robot is proposed. Moreover, without any generally used expensive equipments or complex algorithms for hand gesture recognition, a reliable hand gesture recognition system is efficiently implemented to convey the human commands to the mobile robot with a few constraints.
This paper proposes a novel real-time EMG pattern recognition for the control of a multifunction myoelectric hand from four channel EMG signals. To cope with the nonstationary signal property of the EMG, features are extracted by wavelet packet transform. For dimensionality reduction and nonlinear mapping of the features, we also propose a linear-nonlinear feature projection composed of PCA and SOFM. The dimensionality reduction by PCA simplifies the structure of the classifier, and reduces processing time for the pattern recognition. The nonlinear mapping by SOFM transforms the PCA-reduced features to a new feature space with high class separability. Finally a multilayer neural network is employed as the pattern classifier. We implement a real-time control system for a multifunction virtual hand. From experimental results, we show that all processes, including virtual hand control, are completed within 125 msec, and the proposed method is applicable to real-time myoelectric hand control without an operation time delay.

The field that studies human-computer interaction is called HCI (Human-computer interaction). This field is an academic field that studies how humans and computers communicate with each other and recognize information. This study is a study on hand gesture recognition for human interaction. This study examines the problems of existing recognition methods and proposes an algorithm to improve the recognition rate. The hand region is extracted based on skin color information for the image containing the shape of the human hand, and the center of gravity profile is calculated using principal component analysis. I proposed a method to increase the recognition rate of hand gestures by comparing the obtained information with predefined shapes. We proposed a method to increase the recognition rate of hand gestures by comparing the obtained information with predefined shapes. The existing center of gravity profile has shown the result of incorrect hand gesture recognition for the deformation of the hand due to rotation, but in this study, the center of gravity profile is used and the point where the distance between the points of all contours and the center of gravity is the longest is the starting point. Thus, a robust algorithm was proposed by re-improving the center of gravity profile. No gloves or special markers attached to the sensor are used for hand gesture recognition, and a separate blue screen is not installed. For this result, find the feature vector at the nearest distance to solve the misrecognition, and obtain an appropriate threshold to distinguish between success and failure.

The use of hand gesture provides an attractive alternative to cumbersome interface devices for human-computer interaction(HCI). Many methods hand gesture recognition using visual analysis have been proposed such as syntactical analysis, neural network(NN), Hidden Markov Model(HMM) and so on. In our research, a HMMs is proposed for alphabetical hand gesture recognition. In the preprocessing stage, the proposed approach consists of three different procedures for hand localization, hand tracking and gesture spotting. The hand location procedure detects the candidated regions on the basis of skin-color and motion in an image by using a color histogram matching and time-varying edge difference techniques. The hand tracking algorithm finds the centroid of a moving hand region, connect those centroids, and thus, produces a trajectory. The spotting a feature database, the proposed approach use the mesh feature code for codebook of HMM. In our experiments, 1300 alphabetical and 1300 untrained gestures are used for training and testing, respectively. Those experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach yields a higher and satisfying recognition rate for the images with different sizes, shapes and skew angles.
In this paper, we proposed an algorithm which cognize hand pose in real time using only image. Hand recognizes using edge orientation histogram which comes under a constant quantity of 2D appearance because hand pose is intricate. This method suit hand pose recognition in real time because it extracts hand space accurately, has little computation quantify, and is less sensitive to lighting change using color information in complicated background. Method which reduces recognition error using principal component analysis method to can recognize through hand shape presentation direction change is explained. A case that hand shape changes by turning 3D also by using this method is possible to recognize. Besides, principal component space creation time is reduced remarkably because edge directional data is used.
In this paper, we introduce non-touch style interface system technology without any touch style controlling mechanism, which is called as "Air-interface". To develop this system, we used the full reflection principle of infrared (IR) light and then user's hand is separated from the background with the obtained image at every frame. The segmented hand region at every frame is used as input data for an hand-motion recognition module, and the hand-motion recognition module performs a suitable control event that has been mapped into the specified hand-motion through verifying the hand-motion. In this paper, we introduce some developed and suggested methods for image processing and hand-motion recognition. The developed air-touch technology will be very useful for advertizement panel, entertainment presentation system, kiosk system and so many applications.
Hand gesture recognition is an essential technology for the people who have difficulties using spoken language to communicate. Electromyogram (EMG), which is often utilized for hand gesture recognition, is expected to have difficulties in hand gesture recognition because its people's movements varies depending on prior postures, but the study on this subject is rare. In this study, we conducted tests to confirm if the prior postures affect on the accuracy of gesture recognition. Data were recorded from 20 subjects with different prior postures. We achieved average accuracies of 89.6% and 52.65% when the prior states between the training and test data were unique and different, respectively. The accuracy was increased when both prior states were considered, which confirmed the need to consider a variety of prior states in hand gesture recognition with EMG.
