New synthetic medium for growth of mycelium of Pleurotus species (느타리속(Pleurotus species) 균의 균사 배양을 위한 새로운 합성 배지)

  • The nutritional requirements of mycelial growth for Pleurotus spp. were studied. As the carbon sources, soluble starch and dextrin, nitrogen sources, arginine and ammonium tartrate, and calcium sources, $CaCO_3$ enhanced mycelial growth. Optimum C/N ratio was 100 : 1. On the base of results from the experiment on nutritional requirements, the following receipe is suggested for growth of Pleurotus spp.; starch 15 g, arginine 3.484 g, ammonium tartrate 3.06 g, $CaCO_3$ 0.314 g, $KH_2PO_4$ 8.138 g, $K_2HPO_4$ 1.584 g, $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ 1.5 g for P. sajor-caju and 2.5 g for P. ostreatus. $FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ 0.02 g, $ZnSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ 0.03 g, $MnSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ 0.02 g, optimum pH 6.0. This new synthetic medium is tentatively designated as Park's medium.

  • Cultural characteristics of a strain of Streptomyces sp. K-14 (KFCC 35051) producing glucose isomerase were demonstrated. The glucose isomerase was produced when the strain was grown in the medium containing pure xylan or xylan.containing materials such as wheat bran or com cob. The optimum condition was attained in a culture medium composed of 3 % wheat bran or com cob, 2 % com steep liquor, 0.1% $MgSO_4$$7H_2O$ and 0.012 % $CoSO_4$$7H_2O$ for the production of the glucose isomera,e. The production of the enzyme reached to a maximum level when the strain was cultured for 40 hrs $30^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.0.

  • Herein, sulfonated carbon nanotubes (CNT) have been prepared in dilute sulfuric acid (H2SO4) via a novel sulfonation approach based on gas-liquid interfacial plasma (GLIP) at room temperature. The sulfonic acid groups and total acid groups densities of CNT after GLIP treatment in 2 M H2SO4 for 45 min can reach to 0.53 mmol/g and 3.64 mmol/g, which is higher than that of sulfonated CNT prepared under 0.5 M / 1 M H2SO4. The plasma sulfonated CNT has been applied as catalysts for the conversion of microcrystalline cellulose to glucose. The effect of hydrolysis temperature and hydrolysis time on the conversion rate and product distribution have been discussed. It demonstrates that the total conversion rate of cellulose increasing with hydrolysis temperature and hydrolysis time. Furthermore, the GLIP sulfonated CNT prepared in 2 M H2SO4 for 45 min has shown high catalytic stability of 85.73 % after three cycle use.

Characteristics of Groundwater Quality in Bedrock and Tailing Dumps at the Abandoned Dalcheon Mine Area (달천 폐광산 지역에서 광미적재지와 기반암 지하수의 수질특성 연구)

  • pH and Eh were measured at 25 points in the abandoned Dalcheon mine. And, major ion components $(Na^+,\;K^+,\;Ca^{2+},\;Mg^{2+},\;Cl^-,\;SO_4^{2-},\;CO_3^{2-},\;HCO_3^-)$ were analyzed through groundwater sampling at 41 points. pH and Eh were measured the highest concentration in serpentinite area. And, pH was between weak alkaline and intermediate values in study area. Groundwater in study area was dominated oxidation-reduction environment caused by reaction with carbonate rock. Because sulfur components contained in carbonate, serpentinite, arsenopyrite and pyrite was dissolved by groundwater, $SO_4^{2-}$ component was high in study area. And $Ca^{2+},\;Mg^{2+}$ of cations were high. Correlation coefficients of ion components in tailing dumps were 0.95 between $Ca^{2+}\;and\;SO_4^{2-}$, 0.86 between $Ca^{2+}\;and\;Mg^{2+}$, 0.85 between $Mg^{2+}\;and\;SO_4^{2-}$. Correlation coefficients of ion components in bedrock were 0.86 between $Mg^{2+}\;and\;SO_4^{2-}$, 0.68 between $Ca^{2+}\;and\;SO_4^{2-}$. Concentration range of $Ca^{2+}$ in tailing dumps was $6.85{\sim}323.58mg/L,\;and\;3.18{\sim}207.20mg/L$ in bedrock. Concentration range of $SO_4^{2-}$ in tailing dumps was $21.54{\sim}1673.17mg/L,\;and\;2.04{\sim}1024.64mg/L$ in bedrock. By the result of Piper diagram analysis with aquifer material, groundwater in tailing dumps was $Ca-SO_4$ type. Groundwater quality types with bedrock material were Mg-$SO_4$ and Mg-$HCO_3$ types in serpentinite area, Ca-$HCO_3$ type in carbonate area, Na-K and $CO_3+HCO_3$ types in hornfels, respectively. As a result of this study, groundwater in tailing dumps were dissolved $Ca^{2+},\;Mg^{2+}\;and\;SO_4^{2-}$ components with high concentration. Also, these ion components were transported into bedrock aquifer.

A Study on Ion Concentration Change of Acid Rain by the Succeeding Raintall (연속강우시 산성우의 이온농도 변화에 관한 조사연구)

  • To investigate ionic characteristics of acid rain by the succeeding rainfall. bulk precipitation was collected every each 5mm rainfall from march to october 1990 at Dae Jeon area. pH, sulfate nitrate, chloride, ammonium ion was measured and analyzed. The result was as follows: 1. The weighted average pH of rain was 5.1$\pm$ 0.72(4.15~7.6) and rain pH less than 5.5 was appeared 51.3% 2. Average ion concentrations of sulfate, nitrate, chloride and ammonium ion was 125.12 $\mu$eq/l, 62.38 $\mu$eq/l, 31.95 $\mu$eq/l, 66.6 $\mu$eq/l and rates of each anions was 57%, 28.4%, 14.6% and rate of sulfate by nitrate was 2 times. 3. There is no correlations time interval of rainfall and Ion concentration change. 4. From initial to 15mm rainfall, each ion concentrations were decreased. and average concentration of pH, SO$^{-2}_{4}$, Cl ion concentration was increased in the succeeding rainfall 5. Only sulfate ion was correlated by the simple regression analysis with pH except NO$^{-}_{3}$, Cl$^{-}$ and NH$_{4}^{+}$ Cl$^{-}$ correlation coefficient was very high at the multiple regression analysis with pH. 6. Simple & multiple correlation coefficient among anions and NH$^{+}_{4}$ was very high especially N$^{+}_{4}$ and SO$^{2-}_{4}$ at simple regression analysis and SO$^{-2}_{4}$ and NO$_{3}^{-}$, Cl$^{-}$, NH$_{4}^{-}$ at multiple regression analysis.

A Study on CFD Analysis to Investigate the Effects of Different Feed Rate into the High Temperature H2SO4 Transferring Pump at Fixed Frequency

  • In this study, to apply hydrogen energy to ship engine and to generate effective hydrogen production, we investigated the effects of high temperature $H_2SO_4$ feed rate and cooling water rate to pump parts with fixed frequency needed to reciprocate motion and a simulation was conducted at each condition. In the fixed frequency and cooling water inlet flow rate of 0.5 Hz and 3.9 kg/s, we changed the high temperature $H_2SO_4$ flow rate to 47.46 kg/s (it is 105 % of 45.2 kg/s), 49.72 kg/s (110 %), and 51.98 kg/s (115 %). Also, at 0.5 Hz and 45.2 kg/s of frequency and high temperature $H_2SO_4$ flow, the thermal hydraulic analysis was performed at the condition of 95 % (3.705 kg/s), 90 % (3.51 kg/s), and 85 % (3.315 kg/s). In overall simulation cases, the physical properties of materials are more influential to the temperature increase in the pump part rather than the changes on the feed rate of high temperature $H_2SO_4$ and cooling water. A continuous operation of pump was also capable even if the excess feed of high temperature $H_2SO_4$ of about 15 % or the less feed of cooling water of about 15 % were performed, respectively. When the increasing feed of high temperature $H_2SO_4$ of up to 5 %, 10 %, and 15 % were compared with base flow (45.2 kg/s), the deviation of time period rose to a certain temperature and ranged from 0 to 4.5 s in the same position (same material). In case of cooling water, the deviation of time period rose to a certain temperature and ranged from 0 to 5.9 s according to the decreasing feed changes of cooling water at 5 %, 10 %, and 15 % compared to a base flow (3.9 kg/s). Finally, the additional researches related to the two different materials (Teflon and STS for Pitch and End-plate), which are concerned about the effects of temperature changes to the parts contacting different materials, are needed, and we have a plan to conduct a follow-up study.

Measurement of Aerosol Acidity ($H^+$) in Ambient Air (대기중의 산성도(H+) 측정)

  • To collect and evaluate an aerosol acidity ($H^+$) in ambient air, the cyclone/annular denuder/filter pack sampling system (ADS) was used. Aerosol acidity was collected in Chicago using the ADS for 81 12-hr samples divided in spring/summer/fall 1990 and winter 1991. This study illustrated that the ADS was suitable for measuring aerosol acidity. The $10^{-5}N$ $HCIO_4$ extraction solution for pH determination provided more reliable scale than $10^{-4}N$ HClO4. NH3 should be removed prior to particle collection to accurately measure $H^+$ concentration on the filter. There was seasonal variation in aerosol acidity concertrations. Aerosols were more acidic in the summer. High correlations between $SO_4^{2+} and$NH_4^+$, and between TEX>$SO_4^{2+}$H^+$ were observed during the entire sampling period.

  • Base metal corrosion forms a significant issue during the chemical decontamination of the primary coolant loop in nuclear power plants as it is directly related to the economic and safety viability of decommissioning. In this technical note, potentiodynamic evaluations of several base metals (304 stainless steel, SA106 Grade B carbon steel, and alloy 600) were performed to determine their corrosion behavior during the hydrazine (N2H4)-based reductive ion decontamination (HyBRID) process. The results suggested that N2H4 protected the surface of the base metals in the HyBRID solution, which is primarily composed of H2SO4. The corrosion resistance of the carbon steel was further improved through the addition of CuSO4 to the solution. The corrosion rate of carbon steel in the H2SO4-N2H4-CuSO4 solution was lower than that exhibited in an oxalic acid solution, a commonly used reaction medium during commercial decontamination processes. These results indicate the superiority of the HyBRID process with respect to the base metal stability.

PH Characteristics of Precipitation in Seoul Area (서울 지역에 내린 우수 pH 특성)

  • Rainwater was collected in Seoul area from January 1991 to December 1993 (over 3years) and by the analysis of the chemical components contained in rainwater, investigated the components that effect on rainwater pH Through the above studies the following conclusions were obtained. 1) Method for Averaging pH Volume weighted method is considered to be acceptable providing that precipitation is measured at the same time when the samples are taken, without precipitation data a simple averaging method should be the next choice. 2) Annual average rainwater pH was 4.98 in 1991, 4.80 in 1992, 4.67 in 1993, measurement range was 3.6-8.1. 3) In the relationship between rainwater pH and rainfall amounts rainwater pH for light rain(<15mm rainfall) was existent in the wide range(pH 4-7), but for heavy rain was corresponded to the annual average values. 4) Annual frequency of pH was Birrndat the frequency($\gamma $) between the density of the [$H^{+}$] and pH in the rainwater(over 3years ), $NO_{3}^{-}$ was excellent and the obtained results was 0.62 in 1992. Also In the correlation coefficient($\gamma $) according to the pH range $SO_{4}^{2-}, NO_{3}^{-}$, were 0.85 ,0.68 at 3.6 $Cl^-$ was 0.99(1993). At 4.1$NO_{3}^{-}(\gamma=0.48)$ in 1992, SO_4^{2-}($\gamma$=0.54), $NO_{3}^{-}(\gamma$=0.72), $Cl^- (\gamma$=0.49) in 1993. 6) pH values gradually increased with increase in $Ca^{2+}/SO_{4}^{2-}$.

  • Ferro-Nickel slag is a byproduct of Ferro-Nickel manufacturing process. Ferro-Nickel slag mostly discarded or used as aggregates despite having useful ingredients such as magnesium oxide and silicon oxide. This study tried to extract process for Mg ion using $H_2SO_4$ solution. And remove impurities and get high purity $Mg(OH)_2$ using NaOH. Mg ion was extracted with the Fe ion and other Ferro-Nickel slag composition by $H_2SO_4$ solution. It is important to control the pH because remove impurities and obtain high-purity $Mg(OH)_2$. The impurities were removed by precipitation of the hydroxides. After this process, we added NaOH and high-purity $Mg(OH)_2$ was obtained.
