Mast cells is the key effector cells for IgE-mediated allergic responses. In this study, we investigated whether Rhus trichocarpa extract (RT) inhibited IgE-mediated allergic responses in mast cells and an allergic animal model. We further tried to find its mechanism of action in mast cells. We found that RT suppressed antigen-stimulated degranulation and production of TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-4 in rat basophilic leukemia (RBL)-2H3 mast cells and bone marrow-derived mast cells (BMMC), as well as IgE-mediated passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) in mice. As the mechanism of action of RT, it inhibited the activation of spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk), a pivotal signaling molecule for activation of mast cells and that of LAT, a downstream adaptor molecule of Syk in $Fc{\varepsilon}RI$-mediated signal pathways. RT also suppressed the activation of mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases and Akt. The current results demonstrated for the first time that RT has the anti-allergic effect through inhibiting degranulation and secretion of cytokines by suppression of Syk in antigen-stimulated mast cells. Therefore, RT might be useful for allergic diseases.
To investigate the structure and the conservation strategy of Natural forest at the ridge from Gittaebong to Cheongoksan area 34 plots(10m$\times$10m) were set up with random sampling method. Three groups(Quercus mongolica community, Quercus mongolica-Tilia amurensis community. Quercus mongolica-Fraxinus rhynchophylla community) were classified by cluster analysis. High positive correlations were proved between Quercus mongolica and Pinus densiflora; Pyrus pyrifolia and Viburnum sargentii, Euonymus sachalinensis; Fraxinus sieboldiana and Rhododendron schlippenbachii, Pinus densiflora; Symplocos chinensis for. Pilosa and corylus sieboldiana var. mandshurica, Rhus trichocarpa Lespedeza bicolor; Rhododendron schlippenbachii and Rhododendron mucronulatum; Weigela subsessilis and Euonymus sachalinensis, Rhus trichocarpa, Lespedeza bicolor; Rhus trichocarpa and Lespedeza bicolor and high negative corrlations were proved between Quercus mongolica and Tilia amurensis, Acer Pseudo-sieboldianum. Species diversity(H') of investigated area was 0.5981~0.8150.
Though a great deal of secondary metabolites and their bioactivities were discovered from the plants of the genus Hovenia, the structure-activity relationship was not well defined. To facilitate further pharmacological research and development in this area, we have summarized the progress of phytochemical and pharmacological research on the plants of the genus Hovenia.

This study was executed to measure the user\`s impact natural environment in National Park Campsite. Therefore, we choose Mt. Chiak National Park and the campsite in the district of Temple Ku-Ryong as a model of analysis, which is made by ecological approach, the number of the user has influence on the environment near the campsite. The result are as follows : 1. The more the number of users becomes, the more Na, Ca, Mg ion concentration and pH in the soil increase and the less K ion becomes. 2. Litter and humus depth, litter coverage, herb coverage, soil hardness, the surface of the ground layer and tree species numbers, density and coverage of lower layer shows a sensitive reaction to the number of the users. 3. The research shows that the tolerant trees against campsite impact are Lespedeza maximowiczii, Zanthoxylum schinifolium Staphylea bumalda, Smilax sieboldii, Quercus aliena, Euonymus oxyphyllus, Weigela subsessilis and Securinega suffruticosa, and the sensitive trees are Stephanandra incisa, Rubus trichocarpa, Rubus crataegifolius, Rhododendron mucronulatum, Styrax obassia, Acer palmatum, Lindera obtusiloba, Rhododendron suhlippenbachii, Rhus japonica and Callicarpa japonica. 4. The high density of the users made the simplication of a vegetation structure. So, as the number of the user increase the species showed severe heterogeniety between the heavy-use and nonuse site. 5. As considering the landscape management about campsite and surrounding area on the way of analysis of national landscape aspect and succession sere according to ecological aspect, it may be desirable that Pinus densiflora forest be conserved as Pinus densiflora landscape and mixed forest produce natural scenery with succession sere.
This study was carried out to characterize pinus densiflora forests in middle province (Mt. Seolag, Mt. Taebaik) south province (Mt. Sokli, Mt. Jiri) and south-coast province (Mt. Daedun) of Korea. The appearance species in the P. densiflora alliance included 325 taxa and varied according to the direction of slopes. The steeper the slope was, the fewer number of taxa were observed. The floristic composition of south-coast province was gradually changing to the south hemispheric factors. Dominant species groups of P. densiflora alliance were classified into P. densiflora, Quercus serrata ( layer), Rhus trichocarpa ( layer), Lespedeza maximowiczii var. tomentella (S layer), Artemisia keiskeana, Carex humilis var. nana, Spodiopogon sibiricus (K layer). Quercus variabilis, Fraxinus sieboldiana and Styrax japonica association were formed under the P. densiflora alliance. Quercus, Rhus, Lespedeza and Rhododendron groups maintained high ecological relationships one another. The soil factors (pH, organic matters, and water field capacity)and relative light intensity tended to show negative correlation, which were significantly different among provinces. The P. densiflora forests of Korea were classified into one alliance and four associations, that is, pinion densiflorae Suz.-Tok. 1966, Quercetum variabilae ass. nov., Quercetum mongolicae ass. nov. Fraxinetum sieboldianae ass. nov. and Styraxetum japonicae ass. nov.
Six Korean medicinal herbs, Codonopsis lanceolata Traut (sasam), Platycodon grandiflorium A. De Candolle (gilkyung), Paeonia lactiflora var. trichocarpa Bunge (peony), Angelica gigas Nakai (danggwi), Astragalus membranaceus Bunge (hwangki) and Cnidium officinale Makino (chunkung) were added in brewing Korean traditional rice wine. Fermentation characteristics such as contents of total acid, reducing sugar, total sugar, pH, temperature, and alcohol concentration were investigated every 24 hr during fermentation periods. Changes of fermentation characteristics were remarkable in the initial period $(1{\sim}4\;days)$, slow in the middle $(5{\sim}7\;days)$, and almost unchangeable in the final $(8{\sim}10\;days)$. Total acid content was remarkably increased during the initial period but slowly afterwards. Reducing sugar content, total sugar content, and pH were remarkably decreased during the initial period but slowly afterwards. Alcohol concentrations of medicinal herb rice wines were $0.3{\sim}1.5%$ lower than the traditional wine throughout the fermentation periods. After the final period of 10 days of fermentation, alcohol concentration was observed as 12.6% in wine from sasam, 12.9% from gilkyung, 12.3% from peony, 12.4% from danggwi, 13.4% from hwangki, 12.6% in wine from chunkung, 13.6% in raditional wine respectively. Those differences were expected as the results of differences in various herbs. From the sensory evaluation, the highest score of overall quality was observed in the wine from hwangki, the next from chunkung, sasam, the traditewional wine, gilkyung, danggwi and the last from peony.

Rhododendron mucronulatum for. albiflorum, native species is a shrub that has white flowers on May to June, and rare species endangered by people's rash digging or cutting. But its physiological ecological characteristics and propagation method are not being known at all. Therefore, this study was executed to utilize this species as the planting material for landscaping by analysing its habitat environment and growth form, and also experimenting its seed and vegetative propagation, and it field culture and utilization. The results are as follows; 1. The elevation, gradient and direction of this species were 295-1,350m, 10-36$^{\circ}$, northwest respectively. It was found that the species is shade-liking plant that grows under forest cover of average 51.33%. 2. The soil pH and water content of its habitat were 5.4, 25.41% respectively. The organic matter content was 6.29% that was higher than 3.2%, the average organic matter content of forest soil in Korea. 3. Representative plant community within which this species was living was Quercus mongolica community, and its main neighboring species were Lindea obtusiloba, Fraxinus sieboldiana, Rhus trichocarpa, Rhododendron Schlippenbachii, Rododendron mucronulatum. 4. The leaf length and width of this species were 39.18mm, 12.60mm respectively. This result showed that generally its leaf size was larger than that of R. micranthum, R. yedoense var. poukhanense and R. mucronulatum var. ciliatum and smaller than that of R. mucronulatum and R. schlippenbachii. 5. The whole size of its pollen was, as 59${\times}$61$\mu\textrm{m}$, the largest of plants of Rhododendron family including R. mucronulatum and R. mucronulatum var. ciliatum. 6. The result of seed germination experiment at intervals of 5$^{\circ}C$ from 15$^{\circ}C$ to 30$^{\circ}C$ presented the highest germination rate of 94.7% at 20$^{\circ}C$ numerically, but high percent germination at all temperature levels without significant difference. And the seed of this plant proved to be sun-liking seed at requiring dormancy in germination. 7. Through seed germination experiment by treatment of growth regulators such as GA. Thiourea and Kinetin under dark condition, it was found that the effect of GA treatment on germination increase and acceleration was the highest. 8. In greenwood cutting, rooted rate by treatment of various concentration of IBA and NAA on clay and vermiculite bed was not wholly high, but 100ppm plots of both IBA and NAA of clay bed showed relatively good rooted rate. 9. As result of field culture experiment for finding out optimum growth temperature and light intensity, growth conditions such as height, number of leaves, fresh weight and chlorophyll contents were the best at night/day temperature of 20/25$^{\circ}C$ and under 1/2sun. Also, the photosynthetic rate was the highest at 25$^{\circ}C$. Accordingly, it was found that optimum temperature and light intensity for growth of this plant are 25$^{\circ}C$ (day temperature), 50% of natural light respectively.
The present study focused on the vegetation structure and dynamics of Betula davurica forest were to provide the information for management, distribution and utilization of B. davurica forest in Mt. Chiri national park, southern Korea. The layer structure of B. davurica forest were consist of tree layer(18 species), middle layer(29 species), shrub layer(43 species) and herb layer(68 species). According to the importance value of stratification of layers, In tree layer, B. davurica dominant the highest value of 123.97%, Alnus hirsuta 49.04., Castanea crenata 25.58%, Quercus serrata 25.02%, Stewartia koreana 14.49%, in middle layer were B. davurica 70.81%, Q. serrata 37.74%, Fraxinus rhynchophylla 25.35% Lindera erythrocarpa 24.52%, S. koreana 18.86%, shrub layer were Sasa borealis 28.28%, L. erythrocarpa 24.94%, Rhus trichocarpa, 20.42%, Stephanandra incisa 19.90% and herb layer Schizandra chinensis 18.51%, Aster scaber 12.26%. Disporum smilacinum 10.63% etc, respectively. Results of chi-square test statistics based on presence-absence parameters, the positively associated species pair were Quercus variablis - Q. acutissima, Stewartia koreana - Symplocos paniculata, Acer pseudo-sieboldianum - Quercus mongolica. And covariation was calculated based on quantitative measure of density. The results showed that the association and covariation values among species not agreed with each other. The frequency distribution of DBH Betula davurica species showed reverse J-shaped, therefore it's seems to retrain as a dominant species. When predicting succession in Betula davurica forest, it is seedling and saplings were not richness, succession was governed by competition of hardwood species of subtree and tree layer.

Trail and campground deteriorations and their environmental changes of soil and vegetation were studied in Tonghwa -Sa district of Mt. Palgong Natural Park through 1988 into 1989. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The bare width of trail as one of the trail condition factor was significantly greater on the more heavily used trail. Deterioration types of trail which had higher frequency for a total of 45 observations were rock exposure(42%), trail deepening(40%) and root exposure(18%) in the high order. And also sound type on which the trail was not deteriorated at all amounted to 33% of all observations. 2. Ecological changes of soil and vegatation of trailsides were not found at a uniform tendency except that soil hardness was slightly decreased from trail edge to the forest, but they could be grouped by the type of user\`s behavior and site conditions. Use impacts on the natural environment of trailside in Mt. Palgong are still far from the severe harmulness. 3. Worse damages to compground condition were appeared in Bawi-gol than Susu-gol campsite. Types of mechanically damaged trees were tree with exposed root(63% ), scared tree(43% ), mutilated tree(30 % ) and felled tree in highly frequent order. And diameter increments of trees in campsites were oppressed by the campers. 4. Tree damage types and their frequencies could be basic as a means of which grasp the bounds of user's impacts. User's disturbance on campsite extended to the distance of 70∼90m from the core of campsite at Pawi-gol and 20∼30m at Susu-gol respectively. As the tolerant trees to use impact, Lespedeza maximowiczii, Rhus trichocarpa, Acer palmatum, Rubus crataegifolius and Celastrus orbiculatus were considered.
