  • Beam-to-column connections behaviour plays an important role in the analysis and design of steel and precast concrete structures. The paper presents a computer-based method for geometrically nonlinear frames with semi-rigid beam-to-column connections. The analytical procedure employs modified stability functions to model the effect of axial force on the stiffness of members. The member modified stiffness matrix, and the modified fixed end forces for various loads were found. The linear and nonlinear analyses were applied for two planar steel structures. The method is readily implemented on a computer using matrix structural analysis techniques and is applicable for the efficient nonlinear analysis of frameworks.

  • In this paper a practical limit load estimating procedure is proposed for general pipe-elbow structures subjected to complex loading (in-plane and out-of-plane bending, internal pressure and axial force). The explicit calculating formulae are presented on the basis of theoretical analysis combined with numerical simulation. Von Mises' yield criterion is adopted in both analytical and numerical calculation. The finite element examination shows that the method provides a simple but satisfactory prediction of pipe structures in engineering plastic analysis.

  • This paper deals with adaptive finite element analysis of linearly elastic structures using different error estimators based on flux projection (or best guess stress values) and residual methods. Presentations are given on a typical h-type adaptive analysis, a mesh refinement scheme and the coupling of adaptive finite element analysis with automatic mesh generation. Details about different error estimators are provided and their performance, reliability and convergence are studied using six node quadratic triangular elements. Several examples are presented to demonstrate the reliability of different error estimators.

  • The plane curve approach which was proposed by Boukharouba et. al. is a multi-threshold selection method through searching peak-valley based on histogram cumulative distribution function. However the method is required to select parameters to compose plane curve, and the shape of plane curve is affected according to parameters. Therefore detection of peak-valley is effected by parameters. In this paper, we propose an entropy maximizing-based method to select optimal plane curve parameters, and propose a multi-thresholding method based on the selected parameters. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by multi-thresholding experiments on various images and comparison with other conventional thresholding methods based on histogram.

  • Let Q(n,1) be the set of even unimodular positive definite integral quadratic forms in n-variables. Then n is divisible by 8. For A[X] in Q(n,1), the theta series $\theta$(sub)A(z) = ∑(sub)X∈Z(sup)n e(sup)$\pi$izA[X] (Z∈h (※Equations, See Full-text) the complex upper half plane) is a modular form of weight n/2 for the congruence group Γ$_1$(8) = {$\delta$∈SL$_2$(Z)│$\delta$≡()mod 8} (※Equation, See Full-text). If n$\geq$24 and A[X], B{X} are tow quadratic forms in Q(n,1), the quotient $\theta$(sub)A(z)/$\theta$(sub)B(z) is a modular function for Γ$_1$(8). Since we identify the field of modular functions for Γ$_1$(8) with the function field K(X$_1$(8)) of the modular curve X$_1$(8) = Γ$_1$(8)\h(sup)* (h(sup)* the extended plane of h) with genus 0, we can express it as a rational function of j(sub) 1,8 over C which is a field generator of K(X$_1$(8)) and defined by j(sub)1,8(z) = $\theta$$_3$(2z)/$\theta$$_3$(4z). Here, $\theta$$_3$ is the classical Jacobi theta series.

  • A driver's emotion is a very important factor of safe driving. This paper classified a driver's emotion into 3 major emotions, can be occur when driving a car: Surprise, Joy, Tired. And It evaluated the classifier using Hidden Markov Models, which have observation sequence as bio-signals. It used the 2-D emotional plane to classfiy a human's general emotion state. The 2-D emotional plane has 2 axes of pleasure-displeasure and arsual-relaxztion. The used bio-signals are Galvanic Skin Response(GSR) and Heart Rate Variability(HRV), which are easy to acquire and reliable. We classified several moving pictures into 3 major emotions to evaluate our HMM system. As a result of driving simulations for each emotional situations, we can get recognition rates of 67% for surprise, 58% for joy and 52% for tired.
