  • Antimicrobial activity of Plantain(Plantago asiatica L.) was investigated. Methanol extract of dried Plantain was fractionated to hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, butanol and aqueous fraction. Ethylacetate fraction among these fractions showed the highest inhibitory effect on the microorganisms such as B. subtilis, E. coli, and V. parahaemolyticus at 500 $\mu\textrm{g}$/disc. Ethylacetate fraction was further fractionated into 8 fractions by silica gel column and thin layer chromatography(TLC). The results showed that ethylacetate fractions No. 2 and 3 had the highest anti-microbial activity. They were mixed again, re-separated, and seven fractions were obtained. Among them, No.4 and 6 fraction had the highest inhibitory effect on the microorganisms, which were then separated into four fractions. In the 3rd fractionation, No.4 fraction was identified as hexadecanoic acid by HPLC, $^1$H-NMR and GC-MS.

  • Using a special property of Bloch functions with Hardmard gaps and using the geometric properties of the self maps of the unit disc, we give a way of constructing explicit examples of Bloch functions f whose derivative is in $H^p$ (0 < p < 1) but $f \notin BMOA$.

  • Objective : Low back pain, caused intervertebral disc degeneration has been treated by thermal annuloplasty procedure, which is a non-surgical treatement. The theoretical backgrounds of the annuloplasty are thermal destruct of nociceptor and denaturization of collagen fiber to induce contraction, to shrink annulus and thus enhancing stability. This study is about temperature and its distribution during thermal annuloplasty using 1414 nm Nd : YAG laser. Methods : Thermal annuloplasty was performed on fresh human cadaveric lumbar spine with 20 intact intervertebral discs in a $37^{\circ}C$ circulating water bath using newly developed 1414 nm Nd : YAG laser. Five thermocouples were attached to different locations on the disc, and at the same time, temperature during annuloplasty was measured and analyzed. Results : Thermal probe's temperature was higher in locations closer to laser fiber tip and on lateral locations, rather than the in depth locations. In accordance with the laser fiber tip and the depth, temperatures above $45.0^{\circ}C$ was measured in 3.0 mm depth which trigger nociceptive ablation in 16 levels (80%), in accordance with the laser fiber end tip and laterality, every measurement had above $45.0^{\circ}C$, and also was measured temperature over $60.0^{\circ}C$, which can trigger collagen denaturation at 16 levels (80%). Conclusion : When thermal annuloplasty is needed in a selective lesion, annuloplasty using a 1414 nm Nd : YAG laser can be one of the treatment options.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to confirm the relavance between the dependent variables and the treatment effects of nonsurgical spinal decompression(NSD). Methods: 105 patients suffering from disc herniation and treated with NSD were investigated and analyzed. Results: The intention of retreatment showed a tendency to be higher in having occupation, western treatment only before NSD(WTB) and non-western treatment(WTN) group. As the number of NSD increased, satisfaction score and the Numeric Rating Scale(NRS) difference increased and the NRS after NSD decreased. On the other hand, as western treatment after NSD increased, satisfaction score and the NRS difference decreased and the NRS after NSD increased. The odds ratio of having intention of retreatment was lower in western treatment only after NSD(WTA) group than WTN group. The NRS difference showed a high tendency in the age group of 20s, 60s, and 70s and older. The NRS difference of group with NSD more than 10 times was higher than that of the group with less than 10 times. Satisfaction score of WTN and WTB group was higher than that of WTA group. Adjusted NRS after NSD was the lowest in non-western treatment group and the highest in WTA group. Adjusted NRS after NSD was the lowest in the group with NSD over 21 times, and the NRS after NSD increased as the number of NSD decreased. Conclusion: This study included patients with cervical or lumbar disc herniation and showed that occupation, the number of NSD, western treatment and age statistically affected the treatment effect.

  • A three dimensional numerical analysis has been made for the cone disk control valve and the flat disk control valve. The simulation of the incompressible flow in the each control vale are performed by using the commercial code. Six flow cases of each control valve are investigated.
