  • We calculate the electron scattering amplitude with reduced angular momentum expansion(RAME) and compare it with the plane wave approximation. By using WKB approximation it is shown that the curvature correction factor given by RAME is originated from the source wave centrifugal potential energy. The factor also can be understood as an effective wave number correction factor in plane wave approximation. Angular momentum and its relationship with scattering amplitude is explicitly shown.

  • A two-dimensional twin-jet counterflow system has been designed, in which two streams from two double-slit nozzles form a counterflow. This flow system enables one to systematically investigate various effects on non-premixed flames, including the non-premixed flame interaction, the edge flame behavior and the effect of curvature. Non-premixed flame interaction in the twin-jet counterflow system has been investigated numerically for methane fuel diluted with nitrogen. Three types of non-premixed flame(conventional counterflow flame, crossed twin-jet flame and petal shaped flame) were simulated depending on the combination of fuel/oxidizer supply to each nozzle. The extinction characteristics of non premixed methane flame in the twin-jet counterflow have been investigated numerically. The boundary of the existence of petal-shaped flames was identified for the twin-jet counterflow flames. Due to the existence of the unique petal-shaped flames, the extinction boundary for the twin-jet counterflow can be extended significantly compared to that for the conventional counterflow non-premixed flames, through the interaction of two flames. Through the comparison of the crossed twin-jet flame and the conventional counterflow flame, structure of the crossed twin-jet counterflow flame is analysed. Through the comparison of the petal shaped flame and the conventional counterflow flame, the extension of the extinction boundary for the twin-jet counterflow is investigated.

  • Many studies have been conducted on the process of forming magnesium alloy sheets to reduce the body weights of vehicles. Magnesium has a lower specific gravity than steel and also has a higher specific strength. Mg alloy sheets have low formability and a lot of springback due to their limited ductility and low young's modulus. As the temperature increases, the yield strength of the material decreases. Warm forming increases the formability and minimizes the springback of a material by heating it and the die to reduce the required load at forming. In this study, the temperature of the AZ31B sheet was controlled in order to reduce springback and increase formability. However, as the temperature increased, the deformation characteristics of the material changed and the radius of curvature of the material increased. The load and springback amount required for forming were analyzed according to the temperature and the bottoming force in the bending deformation.

  • The flow through a centrifugal compressor rotor was calculated using the quasi-3-dimensional and fully 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes solution methods. The calculated results, obtained during the development of the computer codes for both methods are discussed. In the inviscid quasi 3-dimensional analysis, stream function formulation was used for the blade to blade (B-B) plane calculations, and the streamline curvature method was used for the meridional (H-S) plane calculations. In the viscous 3-dimensional flow analysis, a control volume method based on a general rotating curvilinear coordinate system was used to solve the time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, and a standard k-.epsilon. model was used to obtain eddy viscosity. The quasi-3-dimensional analysis reasonably predicts the pressure distributions and requires much less computation time in the region where viscous effects are not strong; however, it fails to predict velocity field and loss mechanism through the impeller passage. The viscous 3-dimensional flow analysis shows reasonable pressure distributions and typical jet-wake flow field through the impeller passage. Secondary flow and total pressure distributions on cross-sectional planes explain the loss mechanisms through the impeller.

  • Hemming process, composed of flanging, pre-hemming and main hemming, is the last one of a series of forming processes conducted on the automotive panels, having a great influence on the outward appearance of them. The hem quality can be quantitatively defined by the hemming defects including turn-down, warp and roll-in. However, it is difficult to evaluate and predict the hem quality through the experimental measurement or the numerical calculation since the size of defects is very small. This study is focused on how to simulate in the finite element analysis (FEA) the same conditions as in the experiment. The FEA result on turn-down, that was obtained from a finite element model including the spring element linked to the flanging pad, had a good correlation with the experimental data. It was found that the radius of curvature of the flange deeply affects the final hem quality and therefore high rigidity of forming tools and tight assembling tolerance are highly recommended. An over-stroke of the main hemming punch is also proposed to reduce the turn-down.

  • For the effective manufacture of doubly curved metal plates, a line array roll set (LARS) process is proposed. The suggested process utilizes a pair of upper and lower symmetric roll assemblies. In the process, the initial plate is progressed into the final shape in a stepwise or pathwise manner according to the basic principle of the incremental forming process. The deformation proceeds simultaneously in the longitudinal and transverse directions. Moreover, there is a close correlation between the deformation in the longitudinal direction and that in the transverse direction of the plates. Therefore, the finally formed shape in the incremental forming process is strongly dependent upon process conditions, such as the forming path and the forming increment. The manufacturing of arbitrary doubly curved plates with various curvatures is not an easy task because of such complicated behaviors of the plate; thus, the forming schedules for the desired shape should be carefully and accurately designed. In this study, several experiments with the LARS system were carried out for the fundamental investigation on process design for manufacturing of doubly curved plates.

  • Second-order rate constants (kN) have been measured spectrophotometrically for reactions of 3,4-dinitrophenyl 2-thiophenecarboxylate (2) with a series of alicyclic secondary amines in 80 mol % $H_2O$/20 mol % dimethyl sulfoxide at 25.0 ${^{\circ}C}$. The Brønsted-type plot exhibits a downward curvature for the aminolysis of 2. The curved Brønsted-type plot is similar to that reported for the corresponding reactions of 2,4-dinitrophenyl 2- thiophenecarboxylate (1). The reactions of 1 and 2 have been suggested to proceed through the same mechanism, i.e., through a zwitterionic tetrahedral intermediate ($T^{\pm}$) with a change in the rate-determining step. Substrate 2 is less reactive than 1 toward weakly basic amines (e.g., $pK_a$ < 10.4) but becomes more reactive as the basicity of amines increases further. Dissection of kN into the microscopic rate constants has revealed that the reaction of 2 results in a smaller $k_2/k_{-1}$ ratio but larger $k_1$ than the corresponding reaction of 1. Steric hindrance exerted by the ortho-nitro group has been suggested to be responsible for the smaller $k_1$ value found for the reactions of 1.

  • To investigate the early symptoms of light-chilling, alterations of chlorophyll fluorescence transients were monitored in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Ilmichungjang) leaves. During 24 h chilling, decreases in (Fv)m/Fm, qE and qQ, and an increase in Fo were observed. The chilling effects were not recovered at room temperature, and a significant increase in Fo was observed during the recovery period. After 6 h chilling, ‘dip’(D) level of the transients became obscure, and the negative slope after ‘peak’(P) disappeared. The first derivative (dFv/dt) of the fast fluorescence rise curve was used to obtain more accurate information about the changes in the transients. The maximal rate of the fluorescence increase in the D-p rise curve (Fr) has been the most frequently used chilling stress indicator. However, a correct value of Fr could not be measured when the D level became obscure. This problem was overcome by introducing a new indicator, HFr (dFv/dt at Fv = 1/2 (Fv)m), and HFr gave very similar values to Fr. To monitor the changes in curvature around D level, another new parameter, ${\Delta}S$(D-Fr), was also introduced. These three parameters decreased very sensitively during light-chilling. In addition, increases in these parameters were observed during the first 2 h chilling, but this increase in Fr was also observed in pea leaf discs dark-chilled for 15 min, suggesting that this very early change is a common response to chilling in both pea and cucumber leaves. Quenching coefficients were also very sensitive to chilling, especially qE. Discussion on the usage of these parameters as chilling stress indicators is given in the text.

  • In this paper, a three-dimensional algorithm for the insulation design of the high-voltage equipment is presented. In general, the insulation design consists of two steps. They are electric field calculation and correction of the shape to be designed. In the proposed algorithm, the combination method of charge simulation and surface charge simulation is used to calculate the three-dimensional electric fields. As for the correction of the shape, indirect control provided by rational B-spline is more useful than direct control. The use of rational B-spline reduces in the number of design variables and garrantees the smooth curvature of the designed shape. The proposed algorithm is applied to the design of the shape of the shield ring which has been designed by the method of trial and error.

  • Second-order rate constants ($k_N$) have been measured spectrophotometrically for reactions of 3,4-dintrophenyl 2-furoate (2) with a series of secondary alicyclic amines in 80 mol % $H_2O$/20 mol % dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at 25.0 ${^{\circ}C}$. The Bronsted-type plot exhibits a downward curvature for the aminolysis of 2, which is similar to that reported for the corresponding reactions of 2,4-dintrophenyl 2-furoate (1). Substrate 2 is less reactive than 1 toward all the amines studied but the reactivity difference becomes smaller as the amine basicity increases. Dissection of the second-order rate constants into the microscopic rate constants has revealed that the reaction of 2 results in a smaller $k_2/k_{-1}$ ratio but slightly larger $k_1$ value than that of 1. Steric hindrance has been suggested to be responsible for the smaller $k_1$ value found for the reactions of 1, since the ortho-substituent of 1 would inhibit the attack of amines (i.e., the $k_1$ process).
