We investigated the flavonoid and phenol contents and antioxidant effect of wine by-product extract. Antioxidant effects were measured with 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2.2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt radical cation (ABTS+) assays. Cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) were measured with the dichlorofluorescein-diacetate (DCFH-DA) assay. The flavonoid and phenol contents of the methanol (MeOH) extract were greater than those of the acetone+methylene chloride (A+M) extract. Among fractions, the 85% aqueous methanol (85% aq. MeOH) fraction contained the highest flavonoid contents, while the n-BuOH fraction had more phenol contents. In the DPPH and ABTS assays, the MeOH extract showed a scavenging effect greater than that of the A+M extract (p<0.05). The n-BuOH fraction (0.5 mg/ml concentrations) showed scavenging effects of 72% and 92%, respectively, in the DPPH and ABTS assays (p<0.05). However, the 85% aq. MeOH fraction showed a 90% scavenging effect in the DPPH assay only. In 120 min ROS production assay, all tested fractions dose-dependently decreased cellular ROS production induced by H2O2 in comparison with that produced by exposure to the extract-free control. The MeOH extract showed a higher sinhibitory effect on cellular ROS producing than that of the A+M extract at all concentrations tested. Treatment with the n-BuOH fraction (0.1 mg/ml concentrations) inhibited cellular ROS production by 60%. These results indicate that the n-BuOH fraction of wine by-product extract inhibited cellular oxidation and may contain valuable bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and phenols.
Since many process parameters of FHD(Flame Hydrolysis Deposition) are involved in forming multi-component amorphous silica film ($SiO_2-B_2O_3-P_2O_5-GeO_2$), it has not been easy to predict the optical, mechanical and thermal properties of deposited film from the simple process parameters, such as source flow rate. Furthermore, the prediction of final composition of film becomes even more difficult after sintering at high temperature due to the evaporation of volatile dopants. The motivation of the study was to clarify the quantitative relationship between simple process parameters such as the flow rate of source gases and resulting chemical composition of sintered film. Hence, the compositional analysis of silica soot by FTIR(Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopy) and ICP-AES(Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry) under the control of the amount of dopant was carried out to obtain the quantitative composition. By measuring spectrum of absorbance from FTIR, the compositional change of B-O, Si-O, OH($H_2O$) in silica film was measured. The concentrations of these dopants were also measured by ICP-AES, which were compared with the FTIR result. The final quantitative relationship between simple process parameters and composition was deduced from the comparison between two results.

This study aims to optimize the appropriate concentration of fertilizers for Sageretia thea by analyzing growth performances (height and root collar diameter) and physiological characteristics (photosynthesis, chlorophyll contents, and chlorophyll fluorescence reaction). As fertilizer concentration was increased to 1.5 g·L-1, growth increased, but it decreased at 2.0 g·L-1 treatment. Root collar diameter growth was reduced because of higher fertilizer concentrations. Photosynthesis reactions showed the highest CO2 reaction curves, maximum photosynthesis rate, and maximum carboxylation rate in the 1.5 g·L-1 fertilizer treatment. The chlorophyll fluorescence reaction and SPAD values revealed that fertilizer treatment improves photosynthesis efficiency and robustness compared with untreated control. Therefore, the appropriate fertilizer concentration for producing good seedling quality of Sageretia thea is 1.0~1.5 g·L-1.

Subinhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs) refer to concentrations below minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). The antimicrobial agents may be present at relatively high concentration, at least higher than bacterial MIC and thereafter be deserted off a surface and function at sub-MICs, perhaps by interfering with bacterial metabolism. Consequently, the aim of this study was to determine the effects of growth, in the presence of sub-MICs of antimicrobial agents, on the cell surface properties and virulence factors of mutans streptococci and to investigate the efficacy of a chemical approach in vitro. Streptococcus mutans Ingbritt and Streptococcus sobrinus 6715-7 were used. Eight antimicrobial agents (Sanguinaria extract;SG, Chlorhexidine digluconate;CHX, Fluoride;F, Propolis;PP, Hydrogen peroxide;HP, Triclosan;TC, Sodium dodecyl sulfate;SDS Cetylpyridinium chloride; CC) were diluted serially in broth to determine MICs and to compare the growth rate, acid production, hydrophobicity, adhesion activity to saliva coated hydroxyapatite, glucan synthesis and cellular aggregation of experiment groups (in the presence of sub-MICs) with those of control (in the absence of antimicrobial agents). Sub-MICs of antimicrobial agents affected the growth of cells, hydrophobicity, and adhesion of bacteria to saliva coated hydroxyapatite and glucan synthesis. They also resulted in a significant reduction in pH after 12 hours (p<0.05). By cells pretreated with proteinase K, either the aggregation induced by antimicrobial agents was completely inhibited or the aggregation titers were markedly increased. According to the results of the present study, each antimicrobial agent at sub-MICs could affect similar as its known action mechanism and could continually inhibit cariogenic bacteria at such concentrations. Thus, the use of these antimicrobial agents would be one of the effective methods to prevent dental caries.
These studies are conducted to find out inducing factors for the non-sprouting bud which appears in the utility reclaimed hill mulberry held and to establish control method for it since 1971. The results are as follows: 1. In spring, winter bud does not germinate at all on the top of branches or does wither suddenly after or during its germination. Necrosis and browning are appeared in cortex and phloem of non-sprouting bud branch. In autumn, the deterioration of leaves, the abnormal leaves on the top of branch, and browning of veins or petioles are also observed. 2. The soil of non-sprouting bud mulberry Held were found to be sand loom derived from granite rocks. The sub soil of it was very poor in development of root system because it had hard soil and lower pore space ratio. Especially, the sub soil to bring about severe non-sprouting bud had been easily appeared with deficiency of moisture content because of high density solid. 3. Content of soil moisture was significantly lower in the severe non-sprouting bud soil than in the healthy field. The sub soil o( the healthy field contained proper moisture content. On the other hand, the sub soil of the severe non-sprouting bud held contained almost critical moisture content for wilting. 4. The depth of available soil was shallow in the non-sprouting bud than in the healthy fold. The more rate of the non-sprouting bud was severe, the more available soil depth was sallow. 5. Available boron content in soil was affected by moisture content in soil. There was. lower moisture content in the non-sprouting bud field than that in healthy fold during 5, June to 5, September. 6. There was no significant correlation between soil pH and available boron content. On the other hand, the correlation of the content of organic matter and available boron content appeared to be highly positive significance. 7. The quantity of boron was significantly contained more in healthy mulberry field (0.34∼0.43ppm) than in non-sprouting bud field (0.10∼0.28ppm). 8. Boron content in leaves and barks was significantly lower in the non-sprouting bud trees than in healthy trees. 9. The symptom of non-sprouting bud induced from boron free sand culture was similar with that arised in the non-sprouting bud field. 10. The rate of non-sprouting bud was high by the increased application of lime. Considering the facts mentioned the above, author may conclude that the non-sprouting bud of mulberry tree is caused by boron deficiency, but also it is affected by the parent rocks, organic matter, soil moisture content and lime application. 11. The non$.$sprouting bud may be completely controlled by the application of 6∼9kg borax per 10a mulberry field twice a year in spring and summer.

Purpose: Sprouts of evening primrose (Oenothera laciniata, OL) were reported to have high contents of flavonoids and potent antioxidant activity. This study examined the antioxidant and antiobesity activities of OL sprouts to determine if they could be a natural health-beneficial resource preventing obesity and oxidative stress. Methods: OL sprouts were extracted with 50% ethanol, evaporated, and lyophilized (OLE). The in vitro antioxidant activity of OLE was examined using four different tests. The antiobesity activity and in vivo antioxidant activity from OLE consumption were examined using high fat diet-induced obese (DIO) C57BL/6 mice. Results: The IC50 for the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activities of OLE were 26.2 ㎍/mL and 327.6 ㎍/mL, respectively. OLE exhibited the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) activity of 56.7 ㎍ ascorbic acid eq./mL at 100 ㎍/mL, and an increased glutathione level by 65.1% at 200 ㎍/mL compared to the control in the hUC-MSC stem cells. In an animal study, oral treatment with 50 mg or 100 mg of OLE/kg body weight for 14 weeks reduced the body weight gain, visceral fat content, fat cell size, blood leptin, and triglyceride levels, as well as the atherogenic index compared to the high fat diet control group (HFC) (p < 0.05). The blood malondialdehyde (MDA) level and the catalase and SOD-1 activities in adipose tissue were reduced significantly by the OLE treatment compared to HFC as well (p < 0.05). In epididymal adipose tissue, the OLE treatment reduced the mRNA expression of leptin, PPAR-γ and FAS significantly (p < 0.05) compared to HFC while it increased adiponectin expression (p < 0.05). Conclusion: OLE consumption has potent antioxidant and antiobesity activities via the suppression of oxidative stress and lipogenesis in DIO mice. Therefore, OLE could be a good candidate as a natural resource to develop functional food products that prevent obesity and oxidative stress.

Four LEDs (blue, green, red, and white light) were tested to identify the most attractive wave length to utilize as the forecasting tools for the B. tabaci in glass houses. Attractiveness was evaluated by the total number of the B. tabaci attached to a yellow sticky trap. In the condition of no host plant supplement, the attraction efficacy was ordered from high to low as blue light (107.3±2.5), white light (83.0±12.1), red light (58±21.8), and green light (39.7±8.1). In the supplement of the host plant, the attraction was observed in the order of blue light (52±17.4), red light (38.7±5.8), green light (12.7±1.5), and white light (11.7±5.0). In both experimental conditions, blue light showed the highest attraction. In terms of the host plant effect to LED attraction, it varied following as white light (85.9%), green light (68.1%), blue light (51.6%), and red light (33.3%). This result suggests that red light is the least affected by the host plant. In the evaluation of the relative control efficacy, it was determined following as red light (66.7%), blue light (48.5%), green light (31.9%) and white light (14.1%) (F3,8 = 14.7, P = 0.001). Taken together, blue light had a very high initial attraction, and red light was revealed low attraction effect by the supplement of the host plant. In field demonstration experiments, a high attractive efficacy was not observed due to low-temperature conditions, but similar higher attractive efficacy was observed in blue and red lights compared to the control. The commercialization of LEDs using red and blue in the future is expected to provide important information regarding B. tabaci population density forecast in glass house.
The main purpose of this study was to examine the effects of drama activities using children's literature on the improvement of young children's creativity. To answer this research question, 2 groups, an experimental group composed of 18 five-year-old children who attend "J public Kindergarten," and a control group composed of 18 five-year-old children who attend "H public Kindergarten," were organized. Both kindergartens were located in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do. The experimental group participated in drama activities twice a week; 16 times for 8 weeks. In this study, the change in children's creativity was measured by conducting a pre-test and a post-test developed by Chun(2000). The results after 8 weeks of experimentation indicate that the drama activities using children's literature had a positive effect on promoting children's creativity. Comparing the scores of the pre-test and the post-test, it was obvious that the experimental group's creativity had been improved. The experimental group's creativity including the sub-elements of the test such as fluency, flexibility, uniqueness, and imagination, was improved more than that of the controlled group.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: We investigated total 26 ingredients of Saengshik which will be commercially produced as an anti-diabetic dietary supplement. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Thirteen vegetables, nine cereals, three legumes and one seed were extracted with aqueous ethanol for 2 h at $60^{\circ}C$, and evaluated for their inhibitory effects against ${\alpha}$-amylase and ${\alpha}$-glucosidase and for total phenolic and flavonoid contents. RESULTS: All ingredients inhibited ${\alpha}$-amylase activity except cabbage. Strong inhibitory activity of ${\alpha}$-amylase was observed in leek, black rice, angelica and barley compared with acarbose as a positive control. Stronger inhibition of ${\alpha}$-glucosidase activity was found in small water dropwort, radish leaves, sorghum and cabbage than acarbose. All Saengshik ingredients suppressed ${\alpha}$-glucosidase activity in the range of 0.3-60.5%. Most ingredients contained total phenols which were in the range of 1.2-229.4 mg gallic acid equivalent/g dried extract. But, total phenolic contents were not observed in carrot, pumpkin and radish. All ingredients contained flavonoid in the range of 11.6-380.7 mg catechin equivalent/g dried extract. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate that Saengshik containing these ingredients would be an effective dietary supplement for diabetes.

There are three sub-processes associated with the assembly of the valve seat and cylinder head; heat fitting, cold fitting, and shrink fitting. In the heat fitting stage, the cylinder head is heated to a specified temperature and then squeezed toward the outer diameter of the valve seat. The cold fitting process cools the valve seat and safely squeezes it toward the inner diameter of cylinder head. However, these methods increased the installations & running cost and curtailed productivity. To address these problems, we analyzed the shrink fitting process using the contact pressure caused by fitting interference between the outer diameter of the valve seat and the inner diameter of the cylinder head. In this study, a closed form equation for predicting the contact pressure and fitting load is proposed. For quality control of the assembly line, principal factors of the shrink fitting process influenced in contact pressure were simulated by the FEM. Actual loads measured in the field showed good agreement with the results obtained by theoretical and finite element analysis.
