A steady slot suction near the free-end leading edge of a finite-length square cylinder was used to control its aerodynamic forces and vortex-induced vibration (VIV). The freestream oncoming flow velocity ($U_{\infty}$) was from 3.8 m/s to 12.8 m/s. The width of the tested cylinder d = 40 mm and aspect ratio H/d = 5, where H was the height of the cylinder. The corresponding Reynolds number was from 10,400 to 35,000. The tested suction ratio Q, defined as the ratio of suction velocity ($U_s$) at the slot over the oncoming flow velocity at which the strongest VIV occurs ($U_{\nu}$), ranged from 0 to 3. It was found that the free-end slot suction can effectively attenuate the VIV of a cantilevered square cylinder. In the experiments, the RMS value of the VIV amplitude reduced quickly with Q increasing from 0 to 1, then kept approximately constant for $Q{\geq}1$. The maximum reduction of the VIV occurs at Q = 1, with the vibration amplitude reduced by 92%, relative to the uncontrolled case. Moreover, the overall fluctuation lift of the finite-length square cylinder was also suppressed with the maximum reduction of 87%, which occurred at Q = 1. It was interesting to discover that the free-end shear flow was sensitive to the slot suction near the leading edge. The turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) of the flow over the free end was the highest at Q = 1, which may result in the strongest mixing between the high momentum free-end shear flow and the near wake.

The accurate prediction of dynamic characteristics of high speed rotors, such as gas turbines, is important to avoid the possibility of operating the machinery near the critical speeds or unstable speed regions. However, the dynamic analysis methods and softwares for gas turbines have been developed in the process of producing many gas turbines by manufacturers and most of them have seldom been disclosed to the public. Recently, commercial FEM softwares, such as SAMCEF, ANSYS and NASTRAN, started supporting some rotordynamics analysis modules based on 3-D finite elements. In this paper, the dynamic analysis method using commercial S/W, especially ANSYS, is attempted for the small-size gas turbine engine rotor, and the analysis capability and limitations of its rotordyamics module are evaluated for further improvement of the module. As the preliminary procedure, the rotordyamic analysis capability of ANSYS was tested and evaluated with the reference models of the well-known dynamics. The limitations in application of the rotordynamics module were then identified. Under the current capability and limitations of ANSYS, it is shown that Lee diagram, a new frequency-speed diagram enhanced with the concept of $H{\infty}$ in rotating machinery, can be indirectly obtained from FRFs computed from harmonic response analysis of ANSYS. Finally, it is demonstrated based on the modeling and analysis method developed in the process of the S/W verification that the conventional Campbell diagram, Lee diagram, mode shapes and critical speeds of the small-size gas turbine engine rotor can be computed using the ANSYS rotordynamics module.

The energy saving is one of the most important factors for profit in marine transportation. In order to reduce the fuel oil consumtion the ship's propulsion efficiency must be increased as possible. The propulsion efficiency depends upon a combination of an engine and a propeller. The propeller has better efficiency as lower rotational speed. This situation led the engine manufacturers to design the engine that has low speed, long stroke and a small number of cylinders. Consequently, the variation of rotational torque became larger than before because of the longer delay-time in fuel oil injection process and an increased output per cylinder. As this new trends the conventional mechanical-hydrualic governors for engine speed control have been replaced by digital speed controllers which adopted the PID control or the optimal control algorithm. But these control algorithms have not enough robustness to suppress the variation of the delay-time and the parameter perturbation. In this paper we consider the delay-time and the perturbation of engine parameters as the modeling uncetainties. Next we design the robust servo controller which has zero offset in steady state engine speed, based on H sub($\infty$) control theory. The validity of the controller was investigated through the response simulation. We used a personal computer and an analog computer as the digital controller and the engine (plant) part respectively. And, we could certify that the designed controller maintains its robust servo performance even though the engine parameters may vary.

The purpose of this study is to design the intelligent speed control system for marine diesel engine by combining the Model Matching Method and the Nominal Model Tracking Method. Recently for the speed control of a diesel engine some methods using the advanced control techniques such as LQ control Fuzzy control or H$\infty$ control etc. have been reported. However most of speed controllers of a marine diesel engine developed are still using the PID control algorithm But the performance of a marine diesel engine depends highly on the parameter setting of the PID controllers. The authors proposed already a new method to tune efficiently the PID parameters by the Model Mathcing Method typically taking a marine diesel engine as a non-oscillatory second-order system. It was confirmed that the previously proposed method is superior to Ziegler & Nichols's method through simulations under the assumption that the parameters of a diesel engine are exactly known. But actually it is very difficult to find out the exact model of the diesel engine. Therefore when the model and the actual diesel engine are unmatched as an alternative to enhance the speed control characteristics this paper proposes a Model Refernce Adaptive Speed Control system of a diesel engine in which PID control system for the model of a diesel engine is adopted as the nominal model and a Fuzzy controller is adopted as the adaptive controller, And in the nominal model parameters of a diesel engine are adjusted using the Model Matching Method. it is confirmed that the proposed method gives better performance than the case of using only Model Matching Method through the analysis of the characteristics of indicial responses.

Inactivation properties of Ca current in the unfertilized eggs of mouse were studied by using the whole cell voltage clamp technique and single microelectrode voltage clamp technique. Membrane potential was held at -80 mV and step depolarization was applied from -50 mV to 50 mV for $200{\sim}500\;ms$. Peak of inward Ca currents was $-2{\sim}-4\;nA$ at a membrane Potentials from -20 mV to 0 mV and outward currents were not observed within the membrane voltage range studied $(-50{\sim}50\;mV)$. Inward currents were fully inactivated within 200 ms after the onset of step depolarization. As the membrane became depolarized, time constant of inactivation (${\tau}$) was decreased but remained around $20{\sim}30\;ms$ beyond 10 mV. When $Ca^{2+}$ was used as a charge earlier, inactivation of inward $Ca^{2+}$ current also occured and time course of inactivation was similar to that of $Ca^{2+}$ currents as charge carrier. In the bathing solution containing high potassium $(131\;mM\;K^+)$, process of inactivation was not changed except a parallel decrease of value for the entire range of membrane potential. Steady-state inactivation of the $current(h_{\infty})$ obtained from the double pulse experiment showed the voltage-dependent change. These results suggested that inactivation of Ca currents in the unfertilized eggs of mouse was voltage-dependent.
In general, the swing motions of a crane are controlled and suppressed by controlling the trolley motion. In many of our previous studies, we suggested a new type of anti-sway control system for a crane. In this proposed control system, a small auxiliary mass (moving-mass) is installed on the spreader and moving this auxiliary mass controls tire swing motion. The actuator reaction against the auxiliary mass applies inertial control forces to the container in order to reduce the swing motion in the desired manner. However, measuring systems based on a laser sensor or other means are not veryuseful in real-worldapplications. So, in this paper, animage sensor is used to measure the motions of the spreader and the measured data are fed back to the controller in real time. The applied image processing technique is a kind of robust template matching method called Vector Code Correlation (VCC), which was devised to consider real environmental conditions. The H $\infty$ based control technique is applied to suppress the swing motion of the crane. Experimental results showed that the proposed measurement and control system based on an image sensor is useful and robust to disturbances.

The NOx emission characteristics of C$H_4$-Air coflow jet flames were numerically and experimentally investigated. NOx was measured using a chemiluminescent detection and calculated by the parabolic -type equation solver with a detatiled NOx chemistry. The fuel flow rate( $Q_{F}$), the diameter of mixture nozzle and the equivalence rate(Ф) were varied to discuss the EINOx of each flames at the various combustion conditions. The NOx emission index(EINOx) was introduced to quantify the NOx emission from the parametrically varied flames. The results show that Prompt EINOx increases on a logarithmic profile with increasing ${\Phi}$ and keeps nearly constant for the variation of $Q_{F}$. Thermal EINOx reaches the maximum value at around ${\Phi}$ =1.5 and then slowly decrease for ${\Phi}$ >1.5. In addition, Thermal EINOx increases with increasing $Q_{F}$, but nearly indifferent to the variation of the mixture nozzle diameter. Total EINOx also shows a peak at around ${\Phi}$ =1.5, followed by a relatively sharp decrease for 1.5< ${\Phi}$ <2.5 and increase slowly for 2.5 < ${\Phi}$ < $\infty$ The present Total EINOx trend is well explained by a combination of above Thermal and Prompt EINOx trend with the variation of ${\Phi}$ n of ${\Phi}$.
Aerodynamic effects, such as drag force and flow-induced vibration (FIV), on civil engineering structures can be minimized by optimally modifying the structure shape. This work investigates the turbulent wake of a square prism with its faces modified into a sinusoidal wave along the spanwise direction using three-dimensional large eddy simulation (LES) and particle image velocimetry (PIV) techniques at Reynolds number $Re_{Dm}$ = 16,500-22,000, based on the nominal width ($D_m$) of the prism and free-stream velocity ($U_{\infty}$). Two arrangements are considered: (i) the top and bottom faces of the prism are shaped into the sinusoidal waves (termed as WSP-A), and (ii) the front and rear faces are modified into the sinusoidal waves (WSP-B). The sinusoidal waves have a wavelength of $6D_m$ and an amplitude of $0.15D_m$. It has been found that the wavy faces lead to more three-dimensional free shear layers in the near wake than the flat faces (smooth square prism). As a result, the roll-up of shear layers is postponed. Furthermore, the near-wake vortical structures exhibit dominant periodic variations along the spanwise direction; the minimum (i.e., saddle) and maximum (i.e., node) cross-sections of the modified prisms have narrow and wide wakes, respectively. The wake recirculation bubble of the modified prism is wider and longer, compared with its smooth counterpart, thus resulting in a significant drag reduction and fluctuating lift suppression (up to 8.7% and 78.2%, respectively, for the case of WSP-A). Multiple dominant frequencies of vortex shedding, which are distinct from that of the smooth prism, are detected in the near wake of the wavy prisms. The present study may shed light on the understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms of FIV control, in terms of passive modification of the bluff-body shape.
Antioxidative activity of c비ture of Streptomyces sp. BH-405 was investigated. After removal of pellets of Streptomyces sp. B BH-405, antioxidative substances were is미ated and suc$\infty$sively purified from culture of Streptomyces sp. BH-405 by by thin | layer chromatography $\pi$LC) or silica gel column chromatography. The fraction 3 obtained from ethylether fractionation of the C culture appeared highest level of anti oxidative activity as determined by thiocyanate method. Band 2 obtained by further P purification of this fraction showed higher anti oxidation level than that of same concentration of dl- $\alpha$ -tocopherol, butylated h hydroxy anisole (BHA). The band 2 showed higher rate of 1, 1.diphenyl 2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) decolorization than dl-$\alpha$-tocopherol. In the rat liver microsomes, band 2 rapidly inhibited lipid peroxidation which was initiated enzymatically by r reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) or non-enzymatically by Fenton’s reagent. Band 2 inhibited on | lipid peroxidation of mitochondria or the linoleic acid hydro peroxide induced peroxidation system. It is concluded that band 2 obtained by fractionation of Streptomyces sp. BH-405 cultivation contained antioxidants with the capacity to inhibit oxidative m modification.
