Effects of Simulated Acid Rain on Growth and Physiological Characteristics of Ginkgo biloba L. Seedlings and on Chemical Properties of the Tested Soil -III.   • One-year-old seedlings of Ginkgo biloba were treated with various simulated acid rains(pH 2.0, pH 3.0, pH 9.0 and pH 5.0) to examine the effects of simulated acid rain on the chemical properties of the tested soil. The seedlings were grown in a pot($4500cm^3$)containing one of three different soils(nursery soil, mixed soil and sandy soil). Simulated acid rain was made by diluting sulfuric and nitric acid solution($H^1SO^4$ : $HNO^3$ =3 : 1, V/V) with tap water and tap water(pH 6.4), and treated by 5mm each time for three minutes during the growing seasons(April to October 1985). Acid rain treatments were done three times per week to potted seedlings by spraying the solutions. The chemical properties of potting media were compared among three soil types as well as among the various pH levels. The results obtained in this study were as follows : 1. Exchangeable calcium and magnesium contents and base saturation of the soil decreased with decreasing pH levels of acid rain, and their decreasing rates were as follows : sandy soil was the highest, followed by mixed and nursery soils, However, exchangeable aluminum content rather increased as the pH levels decreased. 2. Available phosphate in the soil decreased as the pH levels of acid rain decreased. Its content increased in nursery soil, compared with those before acid gain treatment, Gut decreased in mined and sandy soils. 3. Soil sulfate and nitrate contents increased remarkably as the pH levels decreased, and the only significant difference in the sulfate was found among the pH levels. Soil sulfate content was the highest in nursery soil, followed by mixed and sandy soils.

The Possibility of Making a Play out of Jindo Ssitgimgut through the Pantomime Empty Hands (무언극 <빈손>을 통해 본 진도씻김굿의 연극화 가능성)

  • This paper started with my effort to find connections between Empty Hands, which was put on the stage at the Mime House in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, and Jindo Ssitgimgut. The mimist Yu Jin-gyu(58) adopted so many elements from Jindo Ssitgimgut for his performance that I felt that it was the pantomime version of Jindo Ssitgimgut. Of course, the pantomime took the form of gut based on shamanism in terms of story. Watching the pantomime, I once again saw the possibility of developing Korea's cultural archetypes into cultural contents. Helen Lannaghan, the art director of London International Mime Festival of 2005, saw his performance at the conference of Chuncheon International Mime Festival and invited it to the London International Mime Festival praising that it's full of Korean elements, minimalist, and modern at the same time. In fact, Empty Hands, which boasts great harmony among the Korean objet, Oriental thoughts, Samulnori, and Western contemporary mime, was invited to many foreign festivals including the Mimos International Mime Festival in 2000, Polish International Mime Festival in 2001, Mongol's International Mime Festival in 2002, and Belgium's International Mime Festival in 2003. In addition, it's recognized for its artistic values and had a chance to shine in another international setting at the London International Mime Festival whose reputations have been worldwide. All those achievements are the result of Yu's constant effort to reflect Korean elements through his movements. What I saw in his pantomime was the possibility that plays based on Korea's cultural archetypes such as Jindo Ssitgimgut could play an important role as a global content of performance culture. Pursuing the possibility further, I analyzed the factors that brought the worldwide recognition to Empty Hands and searched for the ways to create solid storytelling with Jindo Ssitgimgut and make a huge hit on the international stage. It should be noted once more that the pantomime Empty Hands launched Korea's unique performance culture to the world stage by making great use of the traditional Korean cultural contents.

Production of γ-amino Butyric Acid by Lactic Acid Bacteria in Skim Milk (탈지방우유에서 가바생성 유산균 배양을 통한 가바생성 연구)

  • Lactic acid bacteria were isolated from a variety of fermented seafoods and sea creatures from the East Sea Rim, Korea and were screened for ${\gamma}-amino$ butyric acid-producing (GABA) activity. Through a 16S rRNA sequence analysis, the bacteria of interest, which were GABA-positive on the thin-layer chromatography analysis, were recognized as three isolates of Lactobacillus (Lb.) brevis and one isolate of Lactococcus (Lc.) lactis. Lb. brevis FSFL0004 and FSFL0005 were isolated from fermented anglerfish and Lb. brevis FSFL0036 was derived from salted cutlass fish. The Lc. lactis strain FGL0007 was isolated from the gut of a brown sole flounder. According to HPLC analysis, the GABA contents produced by FSFL0004, FSFL0005, FSFL0036 and FGL0007 were equivalent to $10,754.37{\mu}g/ml$, $13,082.79{\mu}g/ml$, $12,290.19{\mu}g/ml$, and $45.07{\mu}g/ml$ respectively in 1% monosodium glutamate-supplemented methionyl-tRNA synthetase (MRS) broth. The four strains were inoculated in skim milk with 1% monosodium glutamate to commercialize the strains as starter cultures for GABA-enriched dairy products, and TLC results displayed the production of ${\gamma}-amino$ butyric acid by all four strains in the adaptation media. Lc. lactis FGL0007 demonstrated the greatest GABA production ($431.42{\mu}g/ml$) by HPLC analysis. The GABA production by lactic acid bacteria strains in the skim milk demonstrated in the present study may be helpful for the production of GABA-enriched dairy products.

Supplementation Effect of Onion Peel Extracts on Small Intestine of Obese Mice (양파껍질 추출물 급여가 비만 유도쥐의 소장내 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was performed to determine the effect of onion peel extract using 70% ethanol and 95% ethanol on its anti-oxidation activity, small intestine length, and intestinal villi of high-fat fed mice. Five percent of each onion peel extract using 70% and 95% ethanol showed significant decrease of E. coli and Listeria monocytogenes. Total phenolic contents of onion peel extracts using 70% and 95% ethanol were $166.89{\pm}0.03$ mg/g and $160.89{\pm}0.13$ mg/g, respectively. In anti-oxidation activity, DPPH radical scavenging activity and SOD-like activity of onion peel extracts were higher at 100 ug/ml concentration. The obese mice were fed high-fat diets supplemented by 1, 3, and 5% of the onion peel extracts using 70% and 95% ethanol for 4 weeks. Body weight, feed intake, feed efficiency, small intestine weight, length, villi's length, and number of bacteria in intestine were determined. Body weight of mice fed 5% of onion extracts using both 70% and 95% ethanol was significantly lower than that of control (p<0.05). However, feed intake was increased in mice fed 5% of onion extracts at both fermented ethanol levels. Small intestine weight and length of mice showed no significant change with supplementation of the onion peel extracts. However, length of small intestine villi was significantly longer than that of control. Total bacteria counts of Cl. Perfringenes and E. coli in small intestine of the mice were significantly reduced by supplementation of 5% of onion extract using ethanol, while lactic acid bacteria were increased. These results suggest that 5% of onion peel extracts using ethanol at either 70% or 95% concentration have potential to be used as an additive for body weight control and enhanced gut health; however, more research on its effectiveness is needed.
