  • A bioassay is a test system using a living organism (in whole or in part) to determine the presence or relative potency of chemical substances. The development and uses of bioassay are intimately linked to the discovery and characterization of the major classes of plant hormones. An application of this relationship is helpful for understanding the concept of plant hormones as well as the use of bioassay. And plant bioassay have been development and employed not only for the discovery and characterization of the biological activity of plant growth regulators but also have served several important secondary roles. The ideal bioassay should possess the characteristic of high specificity. great sensitivity. short response time, low cost and ease of obtaining plant material. acceptable ease of manipulation, and minimal space and equipment requirements.

  • Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is a critical regulator of mesenchymal cell migration and proliferation. The vital functions of PDGFs for angiogenesis, as well as development of kidney, brain, cardiovascular system and pulmonary alveoli during embryogenesis, have been well demonstrated by gene knock-out approaches. Clinical studies reveal that aberrant expression of PDGF and its receptor is often associated with a variety of disorders including atherosclerosis, fibroproliferative diseases of lungs, kidneys and joints, and neoplasia. PDGF contributes to cancer development and progression by both autocrine and paracrine signaling mechanisms. In this review article, important features of the PDGF isoforms and their cell surface receptor subunits are discussed, with regards to signal transduction, PDGF-isoform specific cellular response, and involvement in angiogenesis, and tumorstromal interactions.

  • This study was conducted to determine the concentrations of plant growth regulators required for regeneration and the concentrations of antibiotics for the selection of transformed regenerants from lettuce, musk melon and tomato. The optimal concentrations of plant growth regulators for shoot formation were NAA 0.1 mg/$\ell$ +BA 0.1 mg/$\ell$ for lettuce, NAA 0.01 mg/$\ell$ +BA 2.0 mg/$\ell$ for melon and NAA 0.1 mg/$\ell$ +BA 0.5 mg/$\ell$for musk melon. Shoot induction from tomato, lettuce and melon was completely inhibited by 30 mg/$\ell$ or higher concentrations of kanamycin. Shoot formation from mu나 melon was not affected by kanamycin up to 40 mg/$\ell$, but was reduced in the presence of 50 mg/$\ell$ and completely inhibited by 100 mg/$\ell$. Shoot formation of all four crops was completely inhibited by higromycin at 10 mg/$\ell$. Both carbenicillin and cefatoxinme did not show any negative effects on shoot formation.

  • One of the most attractive short-term possibilities for increasing freezing tolerance of winter crops may be the application of chemicals. This research was conducted to determine the effect of two plant growth regulators. Terpal-C and Cerone on freezing tolerance and winter survival of canola. Three cultivars were planted on the michigan state University Agronimy Farm at East Lansing. MI. on Sept. 10. 1992 and 1993 Chemicals were applied to one-month-old plants when they reached the 5 leaf stage. Ion leakage tests for freezing tolerance were conducted before and after chemical treatment. Winter survival was evaluated by counting the plant standing in the fall and spring. Neither of the chemicals. Terpal-C. inhibited natural cold hardening.

  • Transforming growth factor (TGF)-${\beta}$, a hormonally active polypeptide found in normal and transformed tissue, is a potent regulator of cell growth and differentiation. In this study, we examined the effect of TGF-${\beta}$ on invasion and motility of MCF10A human breast epithelial cells. TGF-${\beta}$ induced migration and invasive phenotype of the parental MCF10A cells in a dose-dependent manner.(omitted)

TGF-$\beta$-induced migration and invasive phenotype of the parental MCF10A cells in a dose-dependent manner. Activity of MMP-2 promoter was increased by TGF-b, suggesting that the TGF-$\beta$-induced invasive phenotype may possibly be mediated by MMP-2 rather than MMP-9. (omitted)

  • The fruiting habit pattern of white-spine cucumber, whose fruits are usually borne on the lateral branches, is different from domestic ones. The cucumber production far export has been focused on how to promote lateral shooting and how to increase the number of lateral branches. As the growing season of the exporting cucumber is confined to winter season, low temperature and weak light are limiting factors to lateral shooting. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of foliar application of growth regulator for induction of lateral shoot in white-spine cucumber. foliar application of growth regulator were focused on concentration and application time based on number of leaves. The visible damages were observed in applied leaves by $30mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA(benzyladenine) in retarding culture, but no significant by $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA in case of semi-forcing culture. The number of available lateral shoots were greater in applied plant with $10mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA than that of $30mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA, in applied plants at 10th and 15th loaves than that of applied plants at 5th leaves.

  • This experiment was carried out to elucidate the effect of the midsummer drainage times and some growth regulators on lodging characters, lodging and yield in puddled-soil drill seeding in rice. Dongjinbyeo, the mid-late maturing rice variety was seeded at May 11 by seeding machine with 4cm of furrow depth. Experimental plots were divided two main treatment without midsummer drain and two time drains (30 and 50 days after seeding), Inabenfide(IBF) was applied 40days before heading(DBH) and IBP was applied at 30DBH, respectively. Culm length was shorten, the wall of N$_4$ was thicken, and the breaking weight was increased at two time drainage and growth regulators applied in order of Inabenfide, IBP, and Control. Lodging wasn't occurred at two time drainage but it was occurred at none drainage in the order of Control, IBP, and Inabenfide applied. Yield was higher at two time drainage compared with none drainage and higher in order of Inabenfide, IBP and Control in none drainage but wasn't significantly different among growth regulators applied in two time drainage. Therefore, two times midsummer soil drying is recommendable management method for puddled -soil drill seeding of rice. • This study was carried out to seek for a most effective hastening method of seed germination by Pon-Pon treatment and asexual multiplication method by cutting in Zanthozylum piperitum. The results obtained in this study were as follows : 1. Cold moist stratification under the ground accompanied with Pon-Pon treatment was shown 74.3% of seed germination, which was the most effective one among pretreatment methods with significance at 1% level. 2. Height growth was shown continuous growth pattern and the maximum growth was shown during the period 1 July to 31 July, which corresponds 40.3% of total annual growth. 3. Although no noticeable difference among the kind of plant growth regulator in the rooting rate, there was difference among concentrations with significance at 1% level. 4. In the case of number of primary roots and T/R rate of rooted cuttings, treatment of plant growth regulators was significantly superior to control. 5. T/R rate in rooted cuttings was a high negative correlation (r=-0.7164) with the number of primary roots.
