  • Transportation has been playing important role in our society by providing for people, freight, and information. However, it cuts its own throat by causing car accidents, traffic congestion, and air pollution. The main cause of these problems is a noticeable growth in the number of vehicles. The easiest way to mitigate these problems is to build new road infrastructures unless resources such as time, money, and space are limited. Therefore, there is a need to manage the existing road infrastructures effectively and safely. In this paper, we propose a road reservation scheme that provides fast and safe response for emergency vehicles using ubiquitous sensor network. Our idea is to allow emergency vehicle to reserve a road on a freeway for arriving to the scene of the accident quickly and safely. We evaluate the performance by three reservation method (No, Hop, and Full) to show that emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire trucks, or police cars can rapidly and safely reach their destination. Simulation results show that the average speed of road reservation is about 1.09 ~ 1.20 times faster than that of non-reservation at various flow rates. However, road reservation should consider the speed of the emergency vehicle and the road density of the emergency vehicle processing direction, as a result of Hop Reservation and Full Reservation performance comparison analysis. We confirm that road reservation can guarantee safe driving of emergency vehicles without reducing their speed and help to mitigate traffic congestion.

  • In the synthesis of water-based polyurethane using self-emulsification process, after being neutralized, polyurethane pre-polymers containing ionic pendant groups are dispersed by simple convective mixing. Preparation of dispersion is followed by chain extension reaction, which is considered as important step for growth of the molecular weight of polyurethane. In this work, pH variations in the aqueous phase were monitored during the chain extension process in the presence of water-soluble diamines. The optimum degree of chain extension and the average particle size in the polyurethane dispersions were examined with varying ionic pendent group contents, type of chain extenders, and feed rate of chain extenders, The initial pH value in the aqueous phase linearly increased and the optimum chain extension point could be obtained from the intersection of two linear lines having different slopes, All average particle sizes before chain extension reaction were almost same, however, the final average particle size increased as feed rates of chain extenders increased, In addition, as the ionic pendant group contents increased, the particle size decreased since the hydrophilicity and hydrodynamic volume increased. As carbon numbers of the chain extenders increased, the final particle size increased significantly. From the results, it was concluded that the chain extension reaction took place among the particles not only in a particle.

  • Calf diarrhea is a disease experienced by almost all of calves after birth and is one of the representative causes of damage to farmers due to mass mortality and of economic losses to them by inhibiting normal growth. In this study, we conducted quick detection of etiologic agents of diarrhea by using a rapid diagnostic kit to multiply diagnose antigens of five etiologic agents of calf diarrhea (rotavirus, coronavirus, Escherichia coli, Cryptosporidium, Giardia) in Hanwoo (Korean native cattle) calves. When the positive antigen proportion of the calf diarrheal feces for each farm was analyzed, rotavirus, coronavirus, Escherichia coli, Cryptosporidium, and Giardia showed antigen positive rates of 0~67%, 0~20%, 0~60%, 0~20%, and 0~67%, respectively. With regard to the antigen positive rate by age in days after birth, 1-week-old calves showed the antigen positive rate of 20% in rotavirus and 20% in Giardia, and 2-week-old calves showed that of 50% in rotavirus. In addition, 4-week-old calves showed the antigen positive rate of 10% in rotavirus, 10% in coronavirus, 10% in Escherichia coli, and 30% in Giardia, and 8-week-old calves showed the antigen positive rate of 17% in coronavirus, 50% in Escherichia coli, 17% in Cryptosporidium, and 33% in Giardia. Based on the results of this study, the etiologic agents of diarrhea in Hanwoo calves for each farm are widely distributed. Although younger than 2-week-old calves were strongly positive for rotavirus, older than 4-week-old calves were highly positive for Giardia and Escherichia coli. In conclusion, we considered that a rapid diagnostic kit is an effective method for quick detection of etiologic agents and would be helpful for cattle farmers and veterinarians to select appropriate therapeutic method.

  • Pre- and post-emergent control of Aneilema keisak was investigated in no-till paddy fields. In addition, a pot trial was conducted to determine use rates of the experimental post-emergent herbicide LGC40863. For pre-emergent control, butachlor(1,800g ai/ha), pretilachlor(600g ai/ha), pretilachlor plus pyrazosulfuron(300+18g ai/ha, respectively), thiobencarb plus bensulfuron(2,100+51g ai/ha, respectively), and molinate plus pyrazosulfuron(1,500+21g ai/ha, repectively) were treated at 20 days before seeding. Among the herbicides, molinate plus pyrazosulfuron was the least effective (23% control), while all other herbicides provided excellent(>95%) control of A. keisak. None of these herbicides caused rice phytotoxicity. However, rice yield in the plot treated with molinate plus pyrazosulfuron decreased about 50% due to poor A. keisak control. LGC40863 controlled A. keisak completely, by foliar application, across wide growth stages from the 5- to 15-leaf at 50g ai/ha in pot tests. In the field, treatment of LGC40863(30 to 50g ai/ha) provided >95% control of A. keisak when treated either at 15 days after transplanting or at non-productive tillering stage. Efficacy of 2,4-D and bentazon was insufficient when treated at non-productive tillering stage. These results suggest that, in no-till paddy fields, A. keisak is controlled by pre-emergent application of butachlor, pretilachlor, pretilachlor plus pyrazosulfuron, or thiobencarb plus bensulfuron, and by post-emergent application of LGC40863.

  • The objective of the study was to investigate the effects of water treatment sludge (WTS) on the growth of soybean and carrot, and uptake of some inorganic components in the plants. WTS was incorporated to field at the rates of 0, 1, 3, and 5 tons per 10a on the basis of dry weight. With the application of the sludge, OM and CEC in the soil increased slightly while the concentration of available phosphorous decreased. And heavy metals, including Pb, Cd, Cr, As and Hg, were not detected at the harvest stage in crops. With an increase in the application of the sludge, the concentration of phosphorous in the seed of soybean and the root of carrot tended to be decreased. There seems no correlation between rate of application of the sludge and uptake of Al in the plants. The yield of soybean was the highest when applied to one ton sludge and the yield on carrot increased with an increase in rate of applied sludge. Also, the concentration of carotene increased with an increased application of the sludge. But, application of WTS showed to deteriorate the visual quality with an irregularity of carrot's surface. This results indicate that application of WTS will be give a positive and negative effects on soil and crops.

  • Weed control in the Korean ginseng(Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) garden is more difficult than in other crops because the ginseng is a perennial crop and has to be cultivated under the artificial shading. As hand weeding is the only practical means to control weed after crop establishment, a selective herbicide would greatly simplify the control of weed in ginseng garden. In an exploratory experiment, the hervicide Fluazifop-butyl was found to be selectively safe for the Korean ginseng plants. Various rates of Fluazifop-butyl were sprayed on 2-, 3-, and 4-years old ginseng plants as a foliar spray to detect crop injury and to difine their critical concentration. No apparent injury to the ginseng plant was noticable even the doubled application rate of Fluazifop-butyl the based on recommended dosage. Neither abnormal foliar change nor any inhibition in leaf and stem growth was resulted for 2-, 3-, and 4-years old ginseng plants treated with Fluazifop-butyl tripled the recommended usage. The foliar treatments of Fluazifop-butyl did not influence the photosynthesis ability but inhibited the respiration of the ginseng leaf.

  • Background: Cnidium officinale Makino have been used in traditional medicine in Northeast Asia. Although gamma-ray mutagenesis has been used to develop breeding resources with novel characteristics, research on the radiation sensitivity of C. officinale Makino is limited. Hence, the optimal gamma-ray dosage for mutation breeding in C. officinale Makino was investigated. Methods and Results: Seedstocks were exposed to doses of gamma rays (5 Gy - 50 Gy), and subsequently planted in a greenhouse. After 30 days of sowing, the survival rates and growth decreased rapidly at doses above 20 Gy, while all individuals died at 50 Gy. The median lethal dose (LD50) was 25.65 Gy, and the median reduction doses (RD50) for plant height, number of stems, and fresh weight were 12.81, 9.32, and 23.26 Gy, respectively. Post-irradiation levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), peroxidase (POD), and chlorophyll in the aerial parts of the plant were quantified using spectrophotometry. Relative to the controls, the levels of MDA and POD increased, while the level of chlorophyll decreased at doses ≥ 10 Gy, indicating cellular damage. Conclusions: A dose of 20 Gy was found to be optimal for mutation breeding in C. officinale Makino.

  • In order to elucidate the effect of dietary n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3HUFA) on the changes of body weight and chemical compositions in the Korean rockfish during starvation, the fish were not fed for 9 weeks after fed different levels $(0\~1.5\%)$ of n-3 HUFA for 10 weeks. The higher level of n-3HUF A was contained in the diets, the slower body weight loss was resulted (P< 0.05). The decreasing rates of the body nutrients of the fish were significantly higher in the fish fed n-3HUF A deficient diets than those of the fish fed n-3 HUF A sufficient diets. Protein and lipid contents of the whole body were decreased with starvation whereas moisture content was increased. Decrease of lipid was mainly due to the decrease of nonpolar lipid. Amounts of polar lipid in the whole body were almost constant throughout the starvation, meaning not being affected by dietary n-3HUF A levels. Percentage of 22: 6n-3 was increased in the polar lipid fraction, but monoenic acids (16:1, 18:1), n-3 series (18:3, 18 4, 20:4) and n-6 series (20:2, 22:4, 22:5) were decreased with starvation. Fatty acid compositions of nonpolar lipid were not changed with starvation. These results suggest that all fatty acids of nonpolar lipid are equally utilized for energy during starvation.

  • In this study, both pressure drop and microbe-population-distribution were observed while running a novel biofilter system with improved design in which the biofilter system is composed of two, upper and lower biofilters with both equal feed-rates of up-flow and down-flow, respectively. Then they were compared with the pressure drop and microbe-population-distribution observed in a conventional biofilter of the same effective volume with unidirectional flow. The pressure drop-value of biofilter system with improved design turned out to be less at the incipient stage of run or steady-state long term operation by more than 40~80% of that of the conventional biofilter. The microbe-population-distribution was observed to be lower and higher at higher and lower column of biofilter, respectively, for both the conventional biofilter and the biofilter system with improved design. The microbe-media of waste-tire crumb showed much greater CFU counts than GAC. In the biofilter system with improved design, the $bottom{\rightarrow}up$ feeding of waste air showed greater microbe-population growth than the $top{\rightarrow}down$ feeding for both the microbe-media of waste-tire crumb and GAC. However, it was more prominent for the former than the latter. Comparing the microbe-population-distributions of both of the conventional biofilter and the biofilter system with improved design, the microbe-population of latter was distributed ca. 15 and 2.5 times more evenly for GAC and the media of waste-tire crumb, respectively, than that of former.

  • The purpose of this study is to calculate the economic value of transport demand forecasting risks in the road PPP project. Under the assumption that volatility of the road PPP project value occurs only in regard with uncertainty of traffic volume forecasting, this study calculates the economic value of the traffic forecasting risks in the case of the road PPP project. To that end, forecasted traffic volume is assumed to be a stochastic variable and to follow the Geometric Brownian motion as time passes. In particular, this study attempts to differentiate itself from existing studies that simply use an arbitrary assumption by presenting the application of different traffic volume growth volatility and the rates before and after the ramp-up period. Analysis of the case projects reveals that the risk premium related to traffic volume forecast of the project turns out as 7.39~8.30%, without considering option value-such as minimum revenue guarantee-while the project value volatility caused by transport demand forecasting risks is 17.11%. As the discount rate grows higher, the project value volatility tends to decrease and volatility in project value is always suggested to be larger than that in transport volume influenced by leverage effect due to fixed expenditure. The market value of transport demand forecasting risk-calculated using the project value volatility and risk premium-is analyzed to be between 0.42~0.50, implying that a 1% increase or decrease in the transport amount volatility would lead to a 0.42~0.50% increase or decrease in risk premium of the project.
