  • As the Selenium is known to be growth promoter in sheep and cattle, the efficacy of selenium has been tested in silkworm Bombyx mori L. The V instar larvae were fed with lethal and sub-lethal doses of selenium treated leaves. The larvae fed with lethal dose showed a significant decrease in growth and Cocoon commercial characters. The treatment with sub lethal dose exhibited a significant increase in the growth of the silkworm. Correspondingly, the cocoon commercial characters on exposure to the lethal dose showed significant decrease and sub lethal dose showed a significant increase. In the light of similar findings reported earlier in other cocoon crops and vertebrates, it can be inferred that selenium at lower doses acts as a growth stimulator, resulting in the higher yield of cocoon crop.

  • It can be assumed that the reasons why the animation characters, 'Olaf (in Frozen Kingdom)' and 'Minions (in Super Bad)', etc., which were very successful in the merchandising market while having won the popularity better than the main characters are very popular even though such characters appeared only by playing a funny role while assisting the adventures of the main characters are not only because of their cute appearances but also because such characters have their own core features in their inner world as the transitional object-characters. Simply expressing, a 'Transitional Object' as a concept suggested by a child psychologist, 'Donald Winnicott', means a lovey doll or an imaginary friend which temporarily replaces an infant's mother during the procedure when the infant is mentally separated from its mother. However, in case that the theory of transitional objects was applied directly to many narrative content characters for doing a study, there must have been done some studies in advance for establishing some new criteria and indexes related to the transitional object-characters of such narrative contents. Accordingly, while thinking that the 'emotional relationship' between a growth-subject and a growth mediator must be dealt with as the most important content in order to define a transitional object-character in a narration clearly, this researcher established some emotional index for judging the propensities of a transitional object-character on the basis of such way of thinking. The index is composed of 4 kinds of emotional roles (quasi-family member, growth mediator, lovey doll, an imaginary friend), 6 kinds of emotional supports (hugging, protecting, accepting, giving the initiative, improving the relationship and mutual supervising) and 4 kinds of emotional impressions (impression by contacting, impression to protect and impression accepting an attack). In case that some main characters of a family feature animation, 'Inside Out', are analyzed while the index mentioned above is applied, it was found that 'Bing Bong' and 'Sadness' have a high propensity as a transitional object-character. Especially, it could be inversely inferred in which ways some good transitional object-characters can help the narrations on growth of a family feature animation by taking a look at the character, 'Sadness' that has the highest propensity as a transitional object-character. The transitional object-character, 'Sadness' assists the narration on growth internally and externally by helping the internal maturity of a growth-subject in a way of projecting the tasks for the internal maturity of a growth-subject while helping the growth-subject to be successfully externally in a way of providing the growth-subject with some kinds of facilitating emotion. As the results from this Study, since such kinds of emotional experiences provided by such transitional object-characters are displaced to not only the relevant growth-subjects but also the audience who are emphasized with such growth-subjects as they are, such transitional object-characters play a role of hidden benefactors who induce some immersion into the narrations and provide child and adult audience with various layers of emotional satisfaction.

  • In order to clarify an effect of seedling weight on the growth pattern of ginseng, seedlings ranged from 0.4g plant to 1.8g plant were transplanted, and then the characters of 5- and 6-year-old ginseng were investigated. The characters of root and leaf, such as length and diameter of main root, root weight, leaf area, and leaf dry weight of 5- and 6-year-old ginseng originated from large seedlings were superior as compared with those from small seedlings, and percentage of missing plant was increased with the increase of seedling weight. There were, however, no significant difference in stem length, stem dry weight, number of seeds per plant and number of palmate leaves and leaflets per plant in 5- and 6-year-old ginseng and these characters were not affected by the weight of seedings transplanted. Root field per unit area was higher in seedings of above 0.6g/plant than in small seedlings.

  • The main purpose of these studies was to obtain the basic informations necessary to develop soybean varieties. Two determinate soybean varieties, Hwangkeumkong and Jangyeobkong, and two indeterminate varieties, Clark and Williams were used to study the differences in growth and yield characters. Indeterminate varieties showed 30 days longer in days from intial flowering to terminal leaf stage and increased 7-8 more nodes on mainstem after initial flowering than determinate varieties. Determinate varieties were greater at middle-upper part, while indeterminate varieties were greater in middle part for the dry weight of the pods and stem at maturity. Total dry weight per unit area was greater in determinate varieties than in indeterminate ones from the early growth to maturity. However, the duration of vegetative growth was longer and the ability to keep leaf area index in the late growth stage was higher in indeterminate varieties. Variations among plants were greater in the order of branch related characters > mainstem, total vegetative, and yield related characters > morphological characters of mains tern and 100 seed weight. In general, variations of vegetative characters formed in the early growth stage were greater than those of yield characters formed in the late growth stage. On the other hand, the variations of those characters were greater in indeterminate varieties than in determinate ones. Variation of a seed weight within a plant was much smaller in determinate varieties than in indeterminate ones : i.e. coefficients of variation of a seed weight within a plant were from 13.6 to 13.8% in determinate varieties and were from 18.5 to 21.1% in indeterminate varieties, respectively.

  • This study was aimed to establish the evaluating protocol and standard assessment for genetically modified (GM) hot pepper and to find out a proper statistic method to analyze for equality of agricultural characters between GM and non-GM pepper lines. GM and non-GM hot pepper lines were cultivated in two GMO fields in the middle region of Korea and total of 52 agricultural characters were collected during the plant growing season for 4 years, 2007 to 2010. Levene's test was conducted to confirm the homogeneity of raw data before statistic analysis. Two-way ANOVA in the multivariate tests and t-test were conducted to analyze 52 agricultural characters in order to find out the equality between H15 and P2377. From the statistical analysis through two-way ANOVA, 16 out of 16 plant growth traits, 9 out of 18 green fruit traits and 7 out of 18 red fruit traits among 4 years and 9 out of 16 plant growth traits, 4 out of 18 green fruit traits and 3 out of 18 red fruit traits between H15 and P2377 have shown the statistic differences. With the same raw data of 52 agricultural characters, t-test was also conducted. Based on the result from t-test, only 1 out of 16 plant growth traits, 2 out of 18 green fruit traits and 1 out of 18 red fruit traits have shown the differences between H15 and P2377, so that it was concluded that there is no statistic difference between H15 and P2377 in terms of agricultural characters. Also, the t-test is a proper statistic method to analyze each trait between GM and its control lines in order to evaluate agricultural characters.

  • In this study, drought period when important agronomic characters of sesame plant is critical, was examined at different growth stages. Plant death by drought started at 40 days after drought in vegetative growth stage and 20 days, in reproductive growth stage. Obserbed by growth stage, drought damage in reproductive growth stage was more in jurious than vegetative growth stage. All the important agronomic characters was refreshed until 40 days and 20 days after drought in vegetative growth stage and reproductive growth stage respectively, but it could berefreshed after those times. Decrease rate of yield by drought ranged from 29 to 80% in vegetative growth stage and from 49 to 85% in respective growth stage. All the important agronomic characters except rate of ripeness showed positive association with grain yield under drought condition. Oil content in grain was decreaced by drought but composition of fatty acid was not affected by it.

  • Shoot weight of Orostachys japonicus should determine its profitability. The study was done to determine the effect of phosphorus and potassium fertilization (0, 5, 10, 20 kg $P_2O_5$ or $K_2O$ /1000 $m^2$) on its growth, morphological characters, and flowering. Night-break treatment of 2 hours at midnight were done since Aug. 25 when afterward samples were taken every 4 weeks to Nov. 16. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. Plant height, inflorescence length, number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were increased with increased P and K levels. Leaf and bract, floret, shoot and total dry weights showed similar response to the above morphological characters although P fertilization more increased them than K fertilization. Florets were more formed with increased P and K levels but were not flowered due to the night-break treatment, meaning that P and K fertilization had little effect on anthesis of the florets formed.

  • An experiment was conducted to study the efficiency of cyanobacterial biofertilizer (CBB) with chemical (NPK) fertilizer on quantitative and qualitative characters of mulberry variety Kanva-2. Their influences on silkworm growth and cocoon characters were also studied. Ten different CBB and NPK fertilizer treatments were given to 5000 plants of established mulberry garden. Treatments were of four types viz., (i) T1 to T7: single and combination dose of CBB+50% NPK (ii) T8: combination dose of CBB + 25%NPK, (iii) T9: CBB only and (iv) T10: control-l00% NPK. Soil pH decreased and nutrients status increased in CBB (T1- T9) treated plots. Average of ten crops data on quantitative traits revealed that T7 (CBB [N. muscorum (1.0 g), A. variahilis (1.0) and S. millei (1.0 g)] + 50% NPK) was very effective in improving growth parameters. Leaf yield was also found high in treatment T7 (32.12 tons/ha/yr.) followed by T10 (31.17 tons/ha/yr.) and T8 (27.67 tons/ha/yr.). Leaf quality characters were found high in T7 and low in T9. Most of the quality traits in T7 are on par with control no. The results revealed that reduction in the dose of chemical fertilizers in T7 did not affect the leaf yield and leaf quality traits of mulberry. This clearly indicates that the efficiency of CBB (T7) provides nitrogen, increases essential nutrients available in soil, maintain soil pH and supply growth substances required for the improvement of leaf yield and leaf quality of mulberry. Bioassay study also revealed no significant difference in silkworm growth and cocoon characters between treatments T7 and T10. Economics calculated revealed that T7 is highly economical and beneficial over T10 by gaining an amount of Rs. 660/-/acre/crop. Thus, treatment T7 containing N. muscorum (1.0 g), A. variahilis (1.0 g) and S. millei (1.0 g) + 50% NPK fertilizers can be recommended to sericulturists mainly to reduce the use of NPK fertilizers, by saving 50% of its cost and to improve soil fertility conditions, which in turn improves leaf yield and quality of mulberry.

  • For abnormal weather disaster and building constructions, the shading stress could occur in crops more often. Those shading stress can effect on rice growth characters. Therefore, we investigated the shading effect on rice growth characters. Shading treatments were treated using shading screen as 35, 55, 75 and 100%. To check the shading effect on rooting after transplanting, shading stress treated after transplanting for 20 days as 35, 55 and 75%, And 35, 55, 75 and 100% of shading were treated 60 days after transplanting to check the growth characters. After transplanting, the shading stress effected on leaf and root growth. At 19 days after transplanting, leaf number reduced by shading stress. In 35, 55 and 75% shading stress, the leaf number reduced as 0.38, 0.45 and 0.9 respectively compared to control treatment. And root length was also reduced as 0.39, 0.6 and 1.93 cm respectively compared to control treatment. The plant height was slightly increased in 35 and 55% and reduced in 100%. Leaf growth speed per day was reduced as 0.0167 according to shading stress. And root growth speed also reduced as 0.0426 according to shading stress. The shading stress during vegetative stage effected on plant height and tiller number. In 35, 55 and 75% of shading stress, the plant height was slightly increased but it was reduced in 100%. Tiller number was significantly reduced by shading stress. According to 10% of shading stress, about 7% of the tiller number was reduced. However, leaf color did not change by the shading stress. The leaf area in 2nd to 4nd leaf from new leaf reduced as 297 and 1044 in 75 and 100% of shading stress and increased as 70 and 99 in 35 and 55%. These leaf area change was affected by both the length and width of the leaf.
