Over the past 50 years, red sea bream Pagrus major has been selectively bred for more than 10 generations to improve its growth rate. However, the effect of genetic factors on growth under low- or non-fish meal diet is still unclear. Here, we analyzed 251 individuals randomly mating 21 females (dam) and 16 males (sire) to determine the difference in growth between non-fish meal (i.e., treatment group) and fish meal-based diet (i.e., control group), if any. The kinship coefficient between each group of individuals and their parents was estimated by the KING (Kinship-based Inference for GWASs) software package. The presumed parents of 74 individuals in the treatment group and 57 individuals in the control group could be effectively identified. Notably, one specific female was consistently related to high- rather than low-growth individuals in both groups. In addition, more than one parent in each group was related to either high- or low-growth individuals. Parents of both high-growth individuals in the treatment group and low-growth individuals in the control group were also identified. Although further study is required on various growth factors, this study suggests the possibility of selective breeding under non-fish meal diet.
A cephalometric radiographic cross sectional comparative study was undertaken to investigate craniofacial growth in cleft lip and palate individuals. The material for this study consisted of 43 subjects with operated cleft lip and palate.(29 males, 14 females). The range of age was from 6 years to 12 years. The roentgenocephalometric values of cleft individuals were compared with values of normal individuals reported by Lee. The following conclusions were obtained; 1) The pattern of cranial base of the cleft subjects was almost the same as that previously reported for the normal individuals. 2) Anterio-posterior length of the mandible did not show any significant difference but in the cleft subjects, that of the males was larger than that of the females. 3) The maxilla of the cleft subjects was very retruded and showed very concave profile. 4) Gonial angle of the cleft subjects was very high, especially in the female clefts. 5) The height of ramus was very poor in the cleft subjects. 6) The facial length was almost the same, but the facial depth of the cleft subjects was smaller than that of the normal individuals. 7) Maxillary and mandibular incisors were severely retroclined. 8) The range of values in the cleft subjects was very variable and the female clefts showed more distured growth than the male clefts.
Stands profiles, yearly changes in growth of annual rings, age and diameter structure, and spatial distribution pattern of individuals in the Pinus densiflora stands around the Yeocheon industrial complex were investigated. Growth of annual ring in Pinus densiflora, which survived when vegetation of this area was damaged by air pollutants, was suppressed for about 10 years since 1974 when factories in this area began to operate, but since then such suppressed growth tended to be recovered. It was supposed that the suppresed growth was originated from air pollution and that improvement of growth since the suppressed period was due to the release from competition with them by death of neighbouring trees and the resuction of the amount of air pollutants. Physiognomy of Pinus densiflora stands showed mosaic pattern composed of different patches. Spatial distribution pattern of individuals an stand profiles were similar to those of Pinus densiflora stands regenerated after natural and artificial disturbances. In an age distribution diagram, age of Pinus densiflora population ranged from 1 to 33 years, Among these individuals were recrited corresponded to the suppresed period of growth of annual ring in Pinus densiflora survived when the vegetation was damaged by air pollution. On the other hand, from the result of analysis of frequency distribution diagram of diameter, it was postulated that even if whis Pinus densiflora community can be maintained as it is for the time being, it might be changed to Quercus community with the lapse of time.
Sexual maturity and growth characteristics of Octopus minor were investigated in 796 individuals from mud flats in Goorori, Muan-Goon, Korea. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) peaked between June and July in females and between November and January in males. The discrepancy in the index peaks between females and males might result from the earlier sexual maturation of males. The sex ratio was biased toward females (68%) in April and toward males (78%) in September, although the differences were not significant (p>0.05). In females, about 50% of individuals with a mantle length of 70.6 mm were sexually mature versus 100% of individuals with mantle lengths over 80 mm. In females, fecundity was also related to size, ranging from 44 eggs in individuals with a mantle length of 54 mm to 179 eggs in the female with a mantle length of 100.5 mm. The relationship between mantle length (ML) an body weight (BW) was BW=0.008 ML$^{2.2797}$ (n=389, r$^2$=0.83, p<0.01) in males and BW=0.029 ML$^{2.2797}$ (n=407, r$^2$=0.74, p<0.01) in females. Analysis of co-variation showed that the difference in the slopes of the two regression lines was significant (p<0.01). Analysis of mantle length-frequency for each month revealed 1 to 3 normal distribution modes. The growth parameters obtained by fitting the modal progression to the seasonalized von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF) were ML$\infty$= 112.38 mm, K=1.9, C=0.90, and WP=0.1. The results indicate that the seasonal growth oscillation of the stock is very strong and winter is the season when growth is the slowest.

To obtain geographical range and growth-kinetics parameters of mottled sake (Beringraja pulchra) populations in the Yellow Sea, three mark-recapture experiments were carried out. Overall, 991 tagged individuals were released, and 4.1% of them were recaptured with the mean release period of 339 d (range, 8-1,420 d) and the mean growth rate of $1.4cm\;mon^{-1}$ (female, $1.5cm\;mon^{-1}$; male $1.3cm\;mon^{-1}$). In the first experiment, 667 individuals were released at Heuksan Island from April to June, 2007-2009, and 30 individuals were recaptured mainly at the north and the north-east coasts of the island, indicating absence of migration to the south of the island. In the second experiment, 323 individuals were released at several fishing grounds scattered in the Yellow Sea in 2010-2013, and 11 individuals were recaptured at points deviated to all directions from the releasing points. As the last, one individual was released with pop-up satellite archival tag at a costal point ($34^{\circ}37.2$'N, $124^{\circ}59.3$'E) off Hong Island on May 21, 2010. The tagged individual migrated to a north-east location ($35^{\circ}50.4$'N, $126^{\circ}03.6$'E) of Eocheong Island by Aug. 25, 2010. The data archived for the three months in the tag indicated that the migration path had depths of 48-80 m and temperature of $12.6-14.4^{\circ}C$. The results indicated that mottled sake populations had a localized habitat ranges at the north of Heuksan Island and the west of Hong Island while growing at the rate of $1.4cm\;mon^{-1}$.
For the ecological study on the gobioid (Favonigobius gymnauchen), samples were collected in the Korean coasts from 1983 to 1995, and the process of ovarian maturation, spawning season, settling period of young individuals and growth were investigated with the specimens collected from Kunsan coast. The ovarian egg development of this species underwent three stages; growth stage from March to April, maturity stage from May to June and spawning stage in July. All the adults died after spawning in late July. Young individuals of total length 10 mm began to live a bottom life in the tide pool of shallow waters in early and middle August. The total length of these individuals reached about 42.1 mm (mean 36.7 mm) in late November. The largest specimen examined in this study was 85.0mm of male. After that time, individuals of this species inhabited in subtidal zone from December to May of the next year. The Favonigobius gymnauchen is distributed at 17 areas of shallow waters and estuaries in the western and southern coasts of Korea.

Mortality and growth rate of the soft coral, Dendronephthya gigantea, from Jejudo Island on the southern coast of Korea were investigated from February 2003 to October 2004 using SCUBA diving. 48 individuals with variable sizes of D. gigantea of the depth of 15m were tagged with flagging tapes and plastic films, and then monitored with two month intervals. The average mortality of two-month term for the study period was 50.4%, with the peak of 84.6% during the summer storms in August - October 2003. About the size class mortality, individuals of size class I(${\leq}$10 cm) showed the highest mortality, followed by size class III(>20 cm) and size class II(10 cm-20 cm). Growth rate did not show a seasonal pattern. For growth in length, individuals of D. gigantea grew about 3cm in average for two-month period, with a maximum growth of 6.4 cm which occurred in August - October 2003. For growth in diameter, individuals grew about 0.3 cm for 2 month term, with a maximum of 1.4cm in April - June 2004. Individuals of size class I usually grew faster than those of larger size classes. D. gigantea population in Jejudo Island was strongly affected by summer storms, which was due to annual event of summer typhoon. Never the less, it appears that the local population can be maintained by fast growth of the juvenile stage and active recruitment to compensate the high mortality caused by the summer disturbance.
Autotransgenic manipulation with a growth hormone (GH)-construct is a potential approach to improving the growth rates of farmed fish. Here, we present the generation of GH-autotransgenic common carp Cyprinus carpio carrying a transgene comprised of the carp homologous GH gene and a ${\beta}$-actin regulator. Autotransgenic carp showed similar viability to their non-transgenic siblings. Early growth characteristics of founder autotransgenic carp up to 50 days postfertilization were highly variable among individuals; i.e., some fish exhibited significant growth depression, while others showed dramatic acceleration of growth, achieving greater than sixfold increases in body weight relative to their non-transgenic counterparts. Stimulated growth performance became more notable with age and many transgenic individuals of the largest class reached 5 kg within 8 or 9 months, which is at least 10 times heavier than the average body weight of communally grown non-transgenics. Four of six founder transgenic males were successful in passing the transgene to their $F_1$ offspring with frequencies ranging from 19 to 36%. Growth stimulations were also persistent in all $F_1$ progeny groups examined.
Size class structure and vegetative growth of a perennial herb of the temperate deciduous forests, Symplocarpus renifolius Schott, were studied from 1991 to 1994 in Namhansansung, Kyonggi Province, Korea. The size class structures of leaf number and leaf area per individual followed bell-shape curve, i.e. frequency of middle class was relatively high. The leaf area increased from the late-March to mid-May. At the end of the growing season, leaf area(length X breadth) was proportional to biomass, especially aboveground biomass. The leaf number and leaf area per individual increased at the rate of 0.08 leaf/year and 9.7 $cm^2/year$, respectively. The size of the individuals in large-sized classes, in leaf number and leaf area, decreased in next year, while the size of the individuals in small-sized classes increased. Therefore, it was concluded that the size class structure of S. renifolius population was largely determined by the growth form.
Regeneration; Pinus densiflora; Air pollution; Annual ring; Age structure; Diameter structure; Quercus spp. In these analyses, factors for individual recognition and species recognition were suggested.
