  • Many countries set growth engine technologies and industries for economic growth and job creation. Each country always wants to know their technological or industrial position in the world in these industries. This study aims at identifying the worldwide position of 19 growth engine industries defined in Korean government. The methods are quantitative by counting the number of startup companies in the world. The ORBIS database was used to extract the number. Therefore, this article may be the first research for the world appearance of growth engine industries and its comparison between world and G7, and between G7 countries. Also, this may be the first study using the ORBIS database on the analysis of certain technology industries. Further, we showed a method to identify world features of technology industries.

  • This study investigated the U.S. green job training framework and specific training programs designed to respond to diverse green skill needs of industry at the federal and state level, and looked for policy directions for improving governmental job training programs in the field of new growth engine industries of Korea. As with any training program, training programs for green jobs should be responsive to the particular economic growth potential, employer needs, and workforce realities in a given country or region. The findings of the study are expected to contribute to enhancing the effectiveness of the Korean job training programs in the new growth engine industries.

  • In the face of climate changes and economic crisis, nations across the world spare no efforts to identify new growth engine industries and lift the domestic economy by promoting green technologies and tightening environmental regulations. The Korean government also tries to create and promote new growth engine industries. As part of these efforts, it launched the New Growth Engine Fund in 2009, a private and public initiative to support small- and medium-sized companies that own promising new green technologies. However, it has a limitation on making investment in the fund due to the global economic crisis, the significant size of necessary capital investment and the difficulty of finding investment companies. The lukewarm response of the private sector arose a need to change the fund management method. Against this backdrop, this paper aims to propose efficient strategies of managing various funds such as cooperation fund between the central and local governments, incubator fund financed by the government and financial institutions and win-win cooperation fund for the government, large companies and partners as a means of developing and supporting new growth engine industries in a sustainable way. The importance of this research lies with the proposition of various funds that can be used to implement the government's strategic goal of developing new growth engine industries.

  • This study aims to examine economic effects and success factors of ICT based growth engine industry for forth generation industrial revolution. KTRS(kibo Technology Rating System) provided by KIBO is used for an analysis of this study. Specifically, the economic effects of growth engine industy are classified with financial(productivity, growth rate, etc) and non-financial(R&D investment and employment) effects. Moreover, the impacts of KTRS factors including CEO capability, technology ability, commercialization and marketability on the economic effects are investigated. The result of this study would raise management issues on technology innovation and provide implications on industrial policies for ICT based growth engine industry.

  • This paper examines the changing roles of ownership in the economic growth by using a panel data set of 30 provinces in China for the period (1999-2010). With the use of absolute and relative presence variables, this study shows that private enterprises have emerged as the engine of economic growth in China in the later period (2005-2010). The growing size and number of private enterprises are positively linked to growth. However, though foreign-invested enterprises have been acclaimed as the main contributors to economic growth in China, they have minimal effect on the economic growth in the later period. State-owned enterprises have a significant and negative effect on the economic growth in the later period. The results can be interpreted that the engine of growth in China has been changed over time from other ownerships to private ownership. Private companies have developed a lot in every respect and started to lead the economy for long-run growth. China initiated its economic growth by adopting foreign capital and it is still the top destination for foreign direct investment among developing countries. However, to sustain the growth over a long period, private sector should be of great importance and perform a key role in the view of catch-up economics.

  • Abstract MOCIE(Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy) handles 6 Projects for Intelligent Robot, whose budget is around 40 Million dollars per year. In this paper we have tried to analyze the state of robot technology of the projects. Each sub-projects has been divided according to the technological classification. Two major projects of Next Generation Growth Engine and 21C Frontier show different state each other. The former is focused on the product while the latter on the technology. Output of 21C Frontier should be linked to the Next Generation Growth Engine, otherwise, it will fail to advance. The project management handles only the quantitative performance such as business results, number of prototype, and number of patents and papers. Technological Capability is essential and it should be managed. This paper proposes efficient classification of robot technology and technology index.

  • The effects of swirl on early flame development and late combustion characteristic were investigated using a high speed single-shot visualized 51 engine. LDV measurements were performed to get better understanding of the flow field in this combustion chamber. Spark plugs were located at half radius (R/2) and central location of bore. High speed schlieren photographs at 20,000 frames/sec were taken to visualize the detailed formation and development of the flame kernel with cylinder pressure measurements. This study showed that high swirl gave favorable effects on combustion-related performances in terms of the maximum cylinder pressure and flame growth rate regardless of spark position. However, at R/2 ignition the low swirl shown desirable effects at low engine speed gave worse performances as engine speed increased than without swirl. There were distinct signs of slow-down in flame growth during the period when the flame front expanded from 2.5mm in radius until it reached 5.0mm apparently due to the presence of ground electrode. There seemed to be heat transfer effect on the flame expansion speed which was evidenced in high swirl case by the slowdown of the late flame front presumably caused by relatively large heat loss from burned gas to wall compared with low- or no-swirl cases.

  • For gas turbine engines, the safe life methodology has historically been used fur fatigue life management of failure critical engine components. The safe retirement limit is necessarily determined by a conservative life evaluation procedure, thereby many components which have a long residual life are discarded. The objective of this study is to introduce the damage tolerant design concept into the life management for aircraft engine component instead of conservative fatigue life methodology which has been used for both design and maintenance. Crack growth data were collected on a nickel base superalloy which have been subjected to combined static and cyclic loading at elevated temperatures. Stress analysis fur turbine disk was carried out. The program for computing creep-fatigue crack growth was developed. The residual lifes of turbine disk component under various temperatures and conditions using creep-fatigue crack growth data were estimated. As the result of analysis, it was confirmed that retirement fur cause concept was applicable to the evaluation of residual life of retired turbine disk which had been designed based on the conventional fatigue life methodology.

  • Engine derating is often considered for reliability benefits because lower power operation reduces its failure probability. To be derated during operation, however, the engine must be initially overdesigned. The engine overdesign is cost effective only if reliability increased from derating is enough to offset the initial increase in the development cost caused from the overdesign. The purpose of this paper is to provide an analytical model to consider a trade-off between the engine overdesign and derating. We use a logistic regression model to explain reliability growth in the number of hot firing tests for a fixed power level. Using the Transcost model with the reliability growth model, we show that 10% overdesign of Titan rocket engine decreases its development cost by about 9% and 23% depending on the reliability requirement. We also point out that such a cost reduction depends on the fuel type a rocket uses.

  • This paper investigate the effects of the variations of engine operation condition in the flame kernel formation and developmnet . A model for calculating the initial kernel development in spark ignition engines is formualted. It considered input of electrical energy, combustion energy release and heat transfer to the spark plyg, cylinder head, and unburned mixture. The model also takes into accounts strain rate of initial kernel and residual gas fraction. The breakdown process and the subsequent electrical power input initially control the kernel growth while intermediate growth is mainly dominated by diffusion or conduction. Then, the flame propagates by the chemical energy and turbulent flame expansion. Flame kernel development also influenced by engine operating conditions, for example, EGR rate, air-fuel ration and intake manifold pressure.
