Emerging role of sirtuins on tumorigenesis: possible link between aging and cancer

  • Aging is the strongest risk factor for cancer development, suggesting that molecular crosstalks between aging and tumorigenesis exist in many cellular pathways. Recently, Sirtuins (Sirt1-7), the mammalian homologues of aging-related $sir2{\alpha}$ in yeast, have been shown to modulate several major cellular pathways, such as DNA repair, inflammation, metabolism, cell death, and proliferation in response to diverse stresses, and may serve as a possible molecular link between aging and tumorignenesis. In addition, growing evidence suggests that sirtuins are directly implicated in the development of cancer, and they can act as either a tumor suppressor or promoter, depending on the cellular context and tumor types. While the functions of Sirt1 in tumorigenesis have been reported and reviewed in many studies, the connection between sirtuins 2-7 and the development of cancer is less established. Thus, this review will present the recent updates on the emerging roles of Sirt2-7 members in carcinogenesis.

Pathogenic Groups Identified Among Isolates of Rhynchosporium secalis

  • Scald, caused by Rhynchosporium secalis has been the major yield-reducing factor for barley production during the last decade. In this study, pathogenic groups of R. secalis were identified to obtain a global picture of the assembly of isolates involved in Syrian populations which is essential for the development of scald-resistant barley cultivars. To identify a number of pathogenic groups, 49 isolates collected over ten years from major barley growing areas in Syria were evaluated on five differential barley genotypes. Genotypes presented a continuous range of response from highly susceptible to moderately resistant, but none were immune to the disease. A cluster analysis placed isolates in six distinct differential pathogenic groups. Mean disease rating of 39.24% was the separation point between avirulent and virulent reactions. Isolate Rs46 exhibited distinct differential virulence patterns associated with high frequency across all genotypes. Hence, the data presented here provides crucial information for future selection of isolates to develop durable barley scald resistance.

실험계획법을 이용한 휠 로더 전 차축의 최적형상에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Optimal Shape Design of Front Axle of Wheel Loader using the Design of Experiments)

  • Wheel loader is one of the construction machinery capable of variety of tasks and the demand on functional diversity and structural reliability is growing. As a study on the optimal shape design of front axle for wheel loader through the design of experiments, this paper assessed the design parameters affecting the maximum stress. As a result, a value of 126.77 MPa of minimum stress was obtained, and optimal factors showed the values of w = 100.0 mm, ${\theta}=40^{\circ}$ and R = 118 mm. It showed an accuracy of 98.7% compared with the structural analysis.

  • Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract and characterized by relapsing and remitting episodes, with progression over time to complications of stricture, fistulas, or abscesses. The etiology is unknown, although the common opinion is that the disease arises from a disordered immune response to the gut contents in genetically predisposed individuals. Infliximab is a mouse-human chimeric antibody against tumor necrosis factor ${\alpha}$, and has proven to be effective in active Crohn's disease for both induction and maintenance therapy. Despite the growing experience with infliximab in Crohn's disease, optimal treatment strategies still need to be determined. The purpose of this review is to summarize the current knowledge on the use of infliximab in Crohn's disease and to discuss the yet-unsolved issues.

  • Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with the high efficieney and long lifetime are of growing interest in next-generation displays. Among the factors influencing OLEDs properties, one of unstable factor is $Alq_3$ cationic species caused by the excess holes resided in $Alq_3$ layer. Therefore, we suppressed the accumulation of excess holes by using the mixed-hole transporting layer (MHTL) of NPB and CBP in multilayer green OLEDs. The devices with MHTL showed improved characteristics in the luminous efficiency and lifetime. More characteristics and the carrier transport mechanism will be discussed.

  • The RF inductive discharge of inductively couples plasma (ICP) continues to attract growing attention as an effective plasma source in many industrial applications, the best known of which are plasma processing and lighting technology. Although most practical ICPs operate at 13.56 [MHz] and 2.65 [MHz], the trend to reduce the operating frequency is clearly recognizable from recent ICP developments. In an electrodeless fluorescent lamp, the use of a lower operating frequency simplifies and reduces cost of RF matching systems and RF generators and can eliminate capacitive coupling between the inductor coil and plasma, which could be a strong factor in wall erosion and plasma contamination. In this study, We discussed simulation and experimental results when changing ferrite position in antenna.

청소년과 생활환경: 생활환경이 청소년의 사회화에 미치는 영향 (Adolescents and the Environment: Effects of Environmental Factors on the Socialization of Adolescents)

  • The effects of environmental factors on adolescent's socializaion were examined. Data were drawn from 1,412 adolescents. A hypothesized model was tested the links among housing, family conflicts, parent-adolescent relationship, family stress, prier relations, mass media, school atmosphere, consumption, consumer socialization, and adolescent's socialization. Adolescent's internal socialization was directly related to father-adolescent relationship, mother-adolescent relationship, family stress, housing, peer relations, school atmosphere, consumer socialization. The external socialization was directly rebated to father-adolescent relationship, mother-adolescent relationship, housing, peer relations, school atmosphere, and consumer socialization. Mass media wits the most important factor which could be predicated the adolescent's socialization . The findings are consistent with a growing body of literature showing that the environmental factors are related to the adolescent's socialization.

The empirical analysis of the growth rate on Small and medium size Enterprises(SMEs) in Korea

  • This paper relates recent empirical research on the growth. Smaller and younger firms have been growing more quickly than larger and older firms, thus, generating proportionately more new jobs. It is not difficult to understand why small and medium firms receive so much attention. Because SMEs provide about 80 percent of private sector employment so SMEs performance is an important economic and social factor. Despite this, they are subject to higher risk and mobility than those at the large firms. This paper is analyzes the relationship between firm growth measured as growth in employment, sales and production and firms age, size and R&D investment. The growth and its relationship with the determinants is linked to industrial policy in Korea. Empirical results are based on an unbalanced panel data covering period 1999-2002. Results show significant relationship between growth, size and age of firm.

  • The application of fracture mechanics have traditionally concentrated on cracks leaded by tensile stresses, and growing under an opening or mode I mechanism. However, many cases of failures occur from growth of cracks subjected to mixed mode loading. Several criteria have been proposed regarding the crack growth direction under mixed mode loadings. This paper is aimed at prediction of fatigue crack growth behaviour under mixed mode(I+II) in two dimensional branched type precrack. In this paper, the maximum tangential stress(MTS) criterion was used to predict crack growth direction. Not only experiment but also finite element analysis(FEA) was carried out. The theoretical predictions were compared with experimental results in this paper

  • Recently, power requirement has been increasing. But the large generation unit is hardly installed because of economic and environment problem. Therefore, the concern for DG(distributed generation) is growing. Present, allowable interconnection capacity of DG for composite distributed generation is studied. In this paper, it is studied that the new interconnection capacity of DG for composite distribution system interconnected DG. We study new allowable interconnection capacity by power factor and placement. We study SERV(sending end reference voltage) variation and allowable interconnection capacity interconnected new DG.
