  • This study was carried out to find out if peripheral neuropathy was resulting from exposed to pesticides in farmers. Thirty four male farmers in rural area of Chungju were selected as a study group. According to the farm type and area, the group was subdivided into two groups: the high exposed group(n=20) and the low exposed group(n=14). Nerve conduction velocity tests were done on four nerves of the dominant arm(median motor, median sensory, ulnar sensory, and ulnar motor) and three nerves of the dominant leg(peroneal motor, sural sensory, and posterior tibial motor). On the nerve conduction study, all of the results were included normal range. But comparing to reference mean values, most of results were significantly decreased(P < 0.01 by t-test). And the median motor conduction velocity and the peroneal nerve latency were significantly increased in the high exposed group than the low exposed group and reference values. But we concluded that these findings are caused by age difference not pesticide exposure. In conclusion, we cannot find any abnormality of nerve conduction velocity caused by exposure to pesticide in this study group.

  • This study was to evaluate the usefulness through the comparison of patients group and healthy control group by acquiring a variety of functional parameters index from time-activity curves of salivary gland scan using 99mTc-pertechnetate. From December 2014 to February 2015, had the targets of 30 patients with dry mouth and 10 people in healthy control group underwent the salivary gland scan. After intravenous injection of 370 MBq of 99mTc-pertechnetate, Vitamin C powder stimulation was administerd orally at 20 min and then 10 minutes were taken scan. The method of quantitative analysis was as follows, the time-activity curve was drawn after the parotid gland and submandible gland were prescribed as a region of interest, a variety of function parameters index was obtained in each position of the curve, and the patients group and the control group were compared. As for the methods applied in comparison and measurement, uptake ratio (UR), time at maximum counts (Tmax), time at minimum counts (Tmin), maximum accumulation (MA), accumulation velocity, maximum secretion (MS), maximum stimulation secretion (MSS), and secretion velocity (SV) were used. In the comparison of functional parameters index of patient group and normal group, the healthy normal group showed significant difference compared to the patient group in all indices except for the minimum radioactivity time (Tmin), and also in terms of variation over time the normal group showed significant difference compared to the patient group (p<0.05). Consequently, it was considered that the quantitative analysis that used a variety of function parameters index would be useful for evaluating the function of the salivary glands of the patients with dry mouth as an objective and standardized information.

  • The Purpose of this study was to examine the kinematic analysis of the upper-limb motion of wheelchair basketball free throw shooting. Three-dimensional kinematic data were obtained from 8 male wheelchair basketball players performing a successful free throw. Players were divided into three groups, according to their IWBF classification(Group 1: 1 point players, Group 2: 2-2.5point players and Group 3:3.5-4 point players) Wheelchair basketball free throw motions were taken by video camera. The three-dimensional coordinates was processed by DLT. Players from Group 1 and 2 tended to release the ball from a lower height, with greater velocity and release angle. Players from Group 1 showed greater shoulder horizontal adduction and horizontal abduction angle, wrist ulnar flexion and radial flexion angle, and trunk angle. but players from Group 2 appeared lower shoulder abduction. Upper limb angular velocity showed most greatly in hands from Group 1, upperarm from Group 2, and forearm from Group 3.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of plasma homocysteine concentration on the brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity between the normal homocysteine group and the asymptomatic high homocysteine group. 435 subjects who visited the general health examination center from April 1 to October 31, 2016, as well as to compare the direct correlation of the brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity, which indirectly reflects the homocysteine test and arterial stiffness, as a predictor of future cardiovascular outcome. As a result of the study, age, waist circumference, BUN, and plasma creatinine were significantly higher, and HDL was significantly lower in the high homocysteine group (> $15{\mu}mol/L$) than in the normal homocysteine group (< $15{\mu}mol/L$) (p=0.05). In addition, homocysteinemia was associated with smoking and drinking (p<0.001) and was significantly higher in males (p<0.001). The right and left brachial-to-ankle pulse wave velocities were significantly higher in the high homocysteine group (right p<0.001, left p=0.003) before calibrating the relevant variables. There was no significant difference between right and left brachial-to-ankle pulse wave velocities after calibrating the relevant variables. Therefore, further studies on the independent association of lowering homocysteine concentration and prevention of cardiovascular disease and the relationship between homocysteine and renal function are needed.

  • Purpose: We compared T-type and I-type canes on postural balance in 28 hemiplegic patients. Methods: Subjects were allocated randomly into two groups: a T-shape cane group (n=14) and an I-shape cane group (n=14). Before the test, subjects were trained by a physical therapist to walk with a cane for 6 weeks. The Main Outcome Measures were measured as maximal sway velocity, sway path, sway area, and partial weight bearing using a Balance Performance Monitor (BPM) and ambulation velocity using a 'Timed up and go test'. We also measured the maximal ambulation velocity. Results: The distribution of weight bearing on the affected side without the cane was 35% in the I-shape cane group and 36% in the T-shape cane group. After training, weight bearing on the affected side increased by 45% in the I-shape cane group and 40% in the T-shape cane group. With the cane held in the hand, weight bearing on the affected side in the T-shape cane group decreased by 3%. Conclusion: The I-shaped cane increased static standing balance, including hemiplegic side weight bearing. Therefore, I-shape canes can improve the balance of hemiplegic patients.

  • PURPOSE: This study sought to investigate the effects of treadmill gait training combined with a thoracic mobility exercise on gait and balance in patients with stroke. METHODS: In this single-blinded, randomized, controlled, comparative study, a total of 20 patients at a rehabilitation hospital who had suffered a hemiplegic stroke were randomly assigned to the experimental group (treadmill gait training combined with a thoracic mobility exercise, n = 11) or control group (treadmill gait training without the thoracic mobility exercise, n = 9). All the participants underwent comprehensive rehabilitation therapy (5 × /week for 4 weeks). Additionally, the experimental group underwent 20 min of treadmill gait training combined with 10 min of a thoracic mobility exercise (3 × / week for 4 weeks) and the control group underwent the former but not the latter. Gait and balance were measured before and after the 4-week training. RESULTS: Significant improvements were observed in the 10-m walking test (10 MWT), timed up-and-go (TUG) test, center of pressure (COP) velocity, and COP length in the experimental group (p < .05). This group also showed a larger decrease in the 10 MWT and COP velocity than the control group (10 MWT, -3.02 sec vs. -1.68 sec, p < .05; COP velocity, -.07 mm/sec vs. .08 mm/sec, p < .05). CONCLUSION: Treadmill gait training, combined with the thoracic mobility exercise, could be effective in improving the gait and balance of stroke patients. It could also be more effective in improving walking speed and static balance than the treadmill gait training alone.

  • Diabetes mellitus (DM) leads to a variety of complications and thus we have retrospectively studied to investigate problems of nerve conduction velocity (NCV) study and the heart in the patients with type-II DM. Blood glucose and blood pressure levels were higher in DM group than in Non-DM group. We found that several latencies were delayed in motor conduction study of upper (median and ulnar nerve) and lower extremities (peroneal and tibial nerve), whereas amplitudes and NCVs were decreased in DM group compared with Non-DM group. Latencies of sensory conduction study in upper and lower extremities (sural nerve) were delayed, while amplitudes and NCVs were lower in DM group than in Non-DM group. Abnormal percent of the electrocardiogram was higher in DM group than in Non-DM group. This retrospective study suggests that type-II DM can cause a damage effect on the peripheral nerve and the heart function.

  • The original focus of this study was to investigate the immediate effects of lumbar rotational mobilization on the one-legged standing ability. Fifteen subjects (6 men and 9 women, mean age = 22.77 (SD = 1.21), mean height = 165.46cm (SD = 11.65), mean weight = 61.46kg (SD = 8.29) volunteers from healthy individuals were recruited and randomized to a lumbar rotational mobilization (LRM) group and a trunk rotational exercise (TRE) group. Mobilization (grade 3 or 4) was applied to the LRM group on the lumbar spine (L1 to L5) in a side-lying, and trunk twist exercise (left and right side) was applied the to the TRE group with lunge position. Center of pressure (COP) and the velocity of the center of pressure (VCOP) of each participant were measured as a balance ability through one leg standing position. Results are as follows. In within-group difference, the COP of the LRM group reduced during standing with the right foot, but the VCOP change of the LRM was not statistically significant. In between-groups difference, COP of TRE group was decreased compared with LRM group only during left leg standing in the eyes (p <.05). The results of this study suggest that LRM is more effective than TRE in improving balance ability.
