  • We investigated the maturity and spawning of the brown sole Pseudopleuronectes herzensteini, in the coastal waters of the East Sea off Gangwon and Gyeongbuk, South Korea, using samples collected by gill net and longline fishery from January 2018 to December 2019. We analyzed oocyte development, monthly maturity stage, gonadosomatic index (GSI) and total length at maturity. Histological analysis of ovarian development in P. herzensteini revealed that the development was group-synchronous. The spawning peak in Gangwon and Gyeongbuk occurred from April to May and from February to March, respectively. Thus, the spawning season in Gangwon was 1-2 months later than that in Gyeongbuk. The length at 50% maturity for females was estimated as 24.2 cm and 19.0 cm in Gangwon and Gyeongbuk, respectively. Similarly, the length at 50% maturity for males was estimated as 19.8 cm and 16.5 cm in Gangwon and Gyeongbuk, respectively.

  • The mutual exclusion (MX) paradigm can be used as a building block in many practical problems such as group communication, atomic commitment and replicated data management where the exclusive use of an object might be useful. The problem has been widely studied in the research community since one reason for this wide interest is that many distributed protocols need a mutual exclusion protocol. However, despite its usefulness, to our knowledge there is no work that has been devoted to this problem in a mobile computing environment. In this paper, we describe a solution to the mutual exclusion problem from mobile computing systems. This solution is based on the token-based mutual exclusion algorithm.

  • Objectives: Epilepsy is a neurological condition characterized by repeated seizures attributable to synchronous neuronal activity in the brain. The study evaluated the effect of acetone extract of Adansonia digitata stem bark (ASBE) on seizure score, cognition, depression, and neurodegeneration as well as the level of Gamma-Aminobutyrate acid (GABA) and glutamate in Pentylenetetrazol-kindled rats. Methods: Thirty-five rats were assigned into five groups (n = 7). Groups 1-2 received normal saline and 35 mg/kg PTZ every other day. Groups 3-4 received 125 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg ASBE orally while group 5 received 5 mg/kg diazepam daily for twenty-six days. Group 3-5 received PTZ every other day, 30 mins after ASBE and diazepam. Results: The results showed that Pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) induces seizure, reduces mobility time in force swim test and decreases the normal cell number in the brain. It also significantly decreases (p < 0.05) catalase, superoxide dismutase and reduced glutathione activities compared to the ASBE pre-treated rats. Pre-treatment with ASBE reportedly decreases seizure activities significantly (p < 0.05) and increases mobility time in the force swim test. ASBE also significantly elevate (p < 0.05) the normal cell number in the hippocampus, temporal lobe, and dentate gyrus. Conclusion: ASBE reduced seizure activity and prevented depression in PTZ-treated rats. It also prevented neurodegeneration by regulating glutamate and GABA levels in the brain as well as preventing lipid peroxidation.

  • Startup teams should be prompt to seize an business opportunity and handle various business problems with which they has not been faced before. This research examines and compares the hypotheses about the processes of communication media usage, knowledge sharing and team agility by the level of task conflict. In order for detailed investigation, each of antecedent was divided into sub-dimensions: communication media usage into synchronous and asynchronous media usage, and knowledge sharing into speed and quantity of knowledge sharing. Team agility, the dependent variable, was proposed as an important success factor of startup teams. The research model describes that the communication media usage affects knowledge sharing and consequently team agility. The differences of media usage and relationships among variables were proposed as the level of task conflict in teams. 230 data points were collected from startup teams under 5 years and statistically processed to test research model and hypotheses. From the total sample analysis, the results indicate that the knowledge sharing speed is positively associated with the quantity, and the knowledge sharing speed and quantity have positive associations with team agility. Both synchronous and asynchronous communication media usage also has significant positive associations with knowledge sharing speed. On the other hand, media usage did not show significant direct association with knowledge sharing quantity. From the group comparisons of task conflict, it was found that the higher task conflict, the higher in media usage, knowledge sharing speed and quantity, and team agility. The process of media usage, knowledge sharing, and team agility were found to be different between the high and low task conflict. From these results, the authors discussed and proposed some implications for startup team leaders.

  • Humic and fulvic acids present in soil of different depth were extracted and their characteristics were analyzed as a basic study to evaluate the effect of humic substances on the behaviour of radioactive elements deposited on soil. Molecular size distribution of the humic and fulvic acids was measured by stirred cell ultrafiltration technique and the structural informations were obtained from their UV-Vis., IR and synchronous fluorescence (SyF) spectral analysis. Main molecular size ranges of the soil 1) humic and fulvic acids were 30~100 kDa (46~56%) and 10~30 kDa (33~43%) respectively, and their overall molecular sizes were found to became smaller with increasing the soil depth. Absorptivities measured at 280 nm in the UV-Visible spectra of humic acids were 1.4~1.5 times higher than those of fulvic acids, and increased with increasing the soil depth. SyF spectral data showed two distinct peak components having maximum peak positions of 428 nm (type I) and 498 nm (type II) for the soil humic and fulvic acids. From the analysis of the peak components, it was found that humic molecules are mainly made up of aromatic compounds corresponding to longer wavelength (type II), and the molecular components increased with increasing the soil depth. Analysis of IR spectral data indicated that the humic molecules contain a higher relative concentration of carboxylic groups than those of fulvic molecules, and the carboxylic group contents are seen to increase as the soil depth increase.

  • Key-value storage engines are an essential component of growing demand in many computing environments, including social networks, online e-commerce, and cloud services. Recent key-value storage engines offer many features such as transaction, versioning, and replication. In a key-value storage engine, transaction processing provides atomicity through Write-Ahead-Logging (WAL), and a synchronous commit method for transaction processing flushes log data before the transaction completes. According to our observation, flushing log data to persistent storage is a performance bottleneck for key-value storage engines due to the significant overhead of fsync() calls despite the various optimizations of existing systems. In this article, we propose a group synchronization method to improve the performance of the key-value storage engine. We also design and implement a transaction scheduling method to perform other transactions while the system processes fsync() calls. The proposed method is an efficient way to reduce the number of frequent fsync() calls in the synchronous commit while supporting the same level of transaction provided by the existing system. We implement our scheme on the WiredTiger storage engine and our experimental results show that the proposed system improves the performance of key-value workloads over existing systems.

  • This case study examined the effects of synchronization-based group music therapy for improving peer interaction of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The participants were five children between the ages of 6 and 10 with ASD. A total of eight 30-minute music therapy sessions were conducted two times a week. During sessions, target behaviors (i.e., engagement in joint action, synchronized movements, eye contact, and initiation of social interaction) were observed and analyzed. Also, the PIPPS-P was completed by parents to identify behavioral changes in real-life environments from pretest to posttest. Following the intervention, all of the participants showed increases in synchronized movements with peers and attempts to initiate social interaction. In addition, parents rated their children's play behavior as being improved in their everyday living environment. These results support that synchronous movements between children with ASD, which were facilitated with rhythmic cueing, led to enhanced engagement in joint action. Considering that those movements are the basis for further social skills (e.g., play behavior), this study also indicates that synchronization-based group music therapy could be an effective therapeutic approach for improving the peer interaction of this population.

  • Background: To evaluate survival outcomes and prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) who received sunitinib (SU) and pazopanib (PZ) as first-line therapy in real-world Korean clinical practice. Methods: Data of 554 patients with mRCC who received SU or PZ at eight institutions between 2012 and 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Based on the targeted therapy, the patients were divided into SU (n = 293) or PZ (n = 261) groups, and the clinicopathological variables and survival rates of the two groups were compared. A multivariable Cox proportional hazard model was used to determine the prognostic factors for OS. Results: The median follow-up was 16.4 months (interquartile range, 8.3-31.3). Patients in the PZ group were older, and no significant difference was observed in the performance status (PS) between the two groups. In the SU group, the dose reduction rate was higher and the incidence of grade 3 toxicity was more frequent. The objective response rates were comparable between the two groups (SU, 32.1% vs. PZ, 36.4%). OS did not differ significantly between the two groups (SU, 36.5 months vs. PZ, 40.2 months; log-rank, P = 0.955). Body mass index, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group PS > 2, synchronous metastasis, poor Heng risk criteria, and liver and bone metastases were associated with a shorter OS. Conclusion: Our real-world data of Korean patients with mRCC suggested that SU and PZ had similar efficacies as first-line therapy for mRCC. However, PZ was better tolerated than SU in Korean patients.

  • Neck dissection has become an integral part of the staging and management of head and neck tumors. This paper reports a series of head and neck patients who had pathological findings in their neck dissection specimens, which were unrelated to their primary tumors. In 7 cases, there was unexpected pathology in the cervical lymph nodes which was not related to the primary tumor. Four cases were squamous cell carcinomas and 3 were thyroid carcinomas. In 3 cases of squamous cell carcinomas, there were no evidence of metastatic squamous cell carcinoma in neck dissection specimen; however, the lymph nodes were found to be involved by metastatic papillary carcinoma in one larynx cancer, metastatic adenocarcinoma in the other larynx cancer, tuberculosis in one nasopharynx cancer. In three of neck dissection specimen of carcinoma(two thyroid carcinomas, one laryngeal carcinoma), dual nodal pathology was found: Each of these specimen contained carcinoma with tuberculosis of the lymph nodes in three cases. In one thyroid carcinoma, there was no evidence of metastasis; however, the lymph nodes were found to be involved by tuberculosis. Preoperative assessment did not reveal any findings to alert us to the possibility of a synchronous pathological process in the cervical nodes of this group of 7 patients. In particular, there was no evidence of active pulmonary tuberculosis in the 5 patients with active lymph node disease.
