This experimental study was designed to investigate the inhibitory effects of Sojihwangamibang on hyperlipidemia in rats induced by high cholesterol diet diet. Sprague- Dawley rats were divided into normal group, control group, SJB treated group. Obese rats were induced by high cholesterol diet treatment for 6 weeks including a oral administration of SJB for 4 weeks. In SJB group, serum total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglyceride and glucose were significantly decreased, and HDL cholesterol was significantly increased compared with untreated control group. In SJB group, HMG-CoA and ACAT concentration of hepatic homogenate were significantly decreased compared with untreated control group. These results provide experimental evidence that SJB, applied currently in the clinical practice, appears to be effective for down-regulating risk factors of hyperlipidemia, and thus may be used as an objective information for the development of therapeutic agents.
Purpose: The present study aimed to develop and examine the effectiveness of a pediatric nursing competency-building program for nursing students. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design conducted between October and December 2021. The participants included 40 nursing students (20 each in the experimental and control groups) at a university in a South Korean city. The pediatric nursing competency-building program integrated problem-based learning and simulation into clinical field practice. The experimental group participated in the program, while the control group did not. Data were analyzed using the 𝑥2 test, the independent t-test, and repeated-measures analysis of variance. Results: Pediatric nursing competency and clinical performance showed a greater increase in the experimental group than in the control group. However, the change in problem-solving ability in the experimental group was not significantly different from that in the control group. Conclusion: The pediatric nursing competency-building program effectively improved students' pediatric nursing competency and clinical performance.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects after having the obesity education with obese elementary school children. The subjects were made up of 31 obese children out of U elementary school in B town as experimental group, and also were selected 34 children out of S elementary school under the same circumstance as control group. They ranged from the third to sixth grades with over 30% body fat ratio. The proceeding of obesity education consisted of three stage; stage for preparation, stage for practice, and stage for finish. The stages mentioned above were put into practice in turn for eleven weeks beginning on Oct. 8, 2001 through Dec. 22, 2001, while two stages only, stage for preparation and finish, were put into practice on the control group. The contents of the education for eleven weeks obesity regulation contained counseling and taking regular exercises once a week by professional gym teacher. In order to evaluate the effects of the education, physical characteristics, body composition, physical fitness, knowledge of obesity, dietry habit and attitude were measured. The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS program, the effects of pre and post obesity education in experimintal group were measured by paired-t test. The conclusions of this study were as follows : 1. Body fat ratio was significantly reduced after obesity education in experimintal group(p=.003). 2. The height with experimental group got taller remarkably(p=.000), but weight showed no signeficance after obesity education(p=.258). 3. Triceps and subscapular skinfold thickness showed remarkable decrese after obesity education(p=.000), percentage body fat and body fat amount got down remarkably after obesity education(p=.000). Percentage lean body mass and lean body mass amount got down remarkably after obesity education(p=.000). 4. Body flexibility, agility and muscle endurance graded up remarkably after obesity education(p=.009, p=.000, p=.000). 5. The grade in obesity knowledge got up remarkably after obesity education(p.000), but dietry habits and its life showed no significance in figures after obesity education(p=.335, p=.112). Through the results shown above, the obesity education caused body fat ratio, physique, body composition to grade up and physical fitness elevated, while dietry habits and its life showed no significance.
Background : The goal of this study was to examine the health behaviors of nurses and provide basic information on health promotion for nurses. Materials and Methods : A self-administered questionnaire survey was completed by 340 nurses working at a university hospital in Daegu, Korea from March 6 to March 30, 2006. The questionnaire included demographic characteristics, working environment, health behaviors, self-assessed health status, and the practice of health promotion activities according to the work group(shift group vs. non-shift group). Results : There were significant differences in 'regular diet', 'drinking', 'ordinary health management', 'regular exercise', 'leisure activities', 'rest', and 'feeling of fatigue' between the two groups. The score for the practice of health promotion activities of the non-shift group was 121.9, which was higher than the 115.4 for the shift group. By field of practice of health promotion activities, there were significant differences in 'self-realization' and 'nutrition' between the two groups. Conclusion : The shift group did not appear to have enough time to take care of their health. It is therefore important to provide a working environment in which nurses are encouraged to increase their interest and efforts to maintain healthy behaviors. In addition, programs for education and training should be developed to help nurses adopt healthy life styles and enhance their self-esteem.
This study investigated the effects of a brief Loving-Kindness and Compassion Meditation(20 minutes) on compassionate love and altruism of undergraduate students. Among the 187 students who were completed the KIIP-SC, 35 of high scored students in Interpersonal Problem Scale were randomly assigned to one of two different groups: Loving-Kindness and Compassion Meditation group(LCM, n=19) and Imagery Trainning group(IT, n=16). During the 20 minutes of practice, LCM group was asked to practice loving-kindness and compassion meditation and IT group was asked to investigate personal characteristics of the imagined people who were same as LCM. Compassionate love, four immeasurebles, two kind of altruistic behaviors, and mood states were measured pre- and post-treatment. LCM group showed significantly higher incremental scores for compassionate love, donation for strange person, and helping behaviors for friends, for close person, and for stranger than IT group. Negative and positive mood states were improved for each of the groups, but there was no significant differences between groups. The results suggested that the comparatively short practice of loving-kindness and compassion meditation could increase altruistic attitudes and intentions toward other persons. And, these effects could not be attributed to mood effects. Limitations of this study and the directions of further research were discussed.
In an attempt to measure effects of the Programmed Resistance Exercise on the daily performance of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, a quasi-experiment ; non-synchronised control group pre-post-test, was carried out for 8 weeks : from June 3 to November 29, 1996. 25 for the experimental group and 26 for the control group were conveniently sampled among registered out-patients on rheumatoid arthritis clinic of Anam Hospital, Korea University Medical Center. The programmed experimental resistance exercises were carried out by the experimental group five times a week for eight weeks. Before and after experiments, level of functional task performance, functional disability, joint mobility, ESR, CRP, self-efficacy and family support were measured and statistically analysed. The results of the analysis of the effects on the Programmed Resistance Exercise are as follows : 1. A statistically significant post-test effects on functional task performance were revealed : 1) the experimental group climbed up and down the 10 steps of the stairs significantly faster than the control group(P=0.0001). 2) the experimental group walked 100 m significantly faster than the control group (P=0.0000). 3) After the experiment, the experimental group could sit down and get up from chairs with no armrest as low as 30cm, 40cm, 50cm on their on, with no assistance as opposed to the control group who could not sit down and get up from such low chairs (P=0.0084). 4) the experimental group lifted 0-15 kg object up to their own heights with no specific strain than the control group (P=0.0000). 2. A significant reduction in the functional disabilities was revealed in the experimental group(P=0.0017). 3. A notable incresement of the joint mobility was revealed in the experimental group. 4. A decrease in the ESR in both the experimental and the control groups was noticed, however, the difference was not statistically significant (P=0.9546). 5. The CRP of both the experimental and control groups decreased with no significant difference (P=0.6022). 6. The self-efficacy increased significantly in the experimental group(P=0.0042), however, no significant effect of self-efficacy on the actual practice of the program was noticed. 7. The family support revealed to be significantly higher in the experimental group (P=0.0013), however, the effect of the family support on actual practice of the program revealed not significant. Judging from the results of these experiments, the resistance exercise program not only improves the functional capacity of rheumatoid arthritis, but also diminishes their functional disabilities and has a great influence on increasing their joint mobility, self-efficacy, and family support. Concluding, in promoting the daily performance of rheumatoid arthritis, the resistance exercise program would be an appropriate nursing intervention.

Background & Objectives: International radiation protection committee recognized the importance of radiation protection from medical practices because the exposure to the radiation in medical practice is higher than any other exposure. The factors on knowledge, attitude and practice of radiation safety of the medical workers engaged in radiation were analyzed in order to improve radiation safety technology. Method: Questionnaires were used for 1200 radiation workers in medical institution from July 23 through September 4 and collected for analysis. Results: Different level of safety measures were practiced by age, marital status, career, and medical facility. The difference was statistically significant. Higher levels of safety measures were practiced in the age group of 50s and married persons. The workers who have more than 20 years experience have higher level of safety measures. The workers of health centers have higher level of safety measures to compare with other workers. The factors which give more concerns on safety practice were self efficacy, practice and knowledge in order. Conclusion: Safety conscious operators should get additional education program to maintain higher level of safety. The operators who do not have much safety concern should be intensive training program for self efficacy and safety.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine learning styles and preferred learning methods of clinical nurses. Method: Data were collected from 735 nurses at one university hospital in Seoul. Learning style inventory, a self-report questionnaire was completed by the subjects. Result: Learning styles of nurses were accommodator 35.9%, diverger 30.4%, converger 18.2%, assimilator 15.5%. Learning styles varied significantly with clinical practice area and academic background. Furthermore, RO(reflective observation) learning mode varied significantly according to the clinical practice area. AC(abstractive conceptualization) learning mode varied significantly with job position. AC and AE(active experimentation) learning modes varied significantly according to the academic background and preferred learning method. Preferred learning methods were lecture 24.8%, clinical practice 23.1%, self-directed learning 21.5%, audiovisual education 16.7%, and group discussion 13.9%. Preferred learning methods varied significantly with learning styles and career. Lecture was preferred in diverger and self-directed learning was preferred in assimilator. Clinical practice was preferred in accommodator and converger. Conclusions: This study suggested that clinical education should be applied to nurses after examining learning styles and preferred learning methods. In conclusion, to identify the nurses' learning styles could be helpful for developing the effective educational skill.
Purpose: This mixed method study was conducted to analyze the changes in nursing students' practice environment due to comprehensive nursing care services. Methods: For the quantitative study, a checklist and practicum evaluation surveys completed by 85 students were analyzed using SPSS utilizing a Mann-Whitney U test. For the qualitative study, 13 students with experience of practice in comprehensive nursing care service units participated in focus group interviews. The data were analyzed using a content analysis method. Results: From the qualitative findings, four themes and eight sub-themes were identified. The four themes were , , , and . The quantitative findings found that students could observe and perform fewer nursing tasks and the students' satisfaction with practice was lower in the comprehensive nursing care service unit. Conclusion: This study was meaningful in that it analyzed the experiences of nursing students in comprehensive nursing care services.

The purpose of this study is to improve the empathy, communication efficacy, and communication skills of nursing students through a psychiatric nursing practice program using storytelling by allowing the students to immerse in the narratives and identify themselves with the main characters with mental illness. This study is a single group pretest-posttest design that applied psychological nursing practice using storytelling to 46 nursing students from a local university in Korea and evaluated its effectiveness. Data analysis was performed by a paired t-test to compare the effects of the participants' empathy, communication self-efficacy, and therapeutic communication ability using SPSS 21.0 program. The results showed that psychiatric nursing practice using storytelling had an effect on the empathy (t=3.565, p=.001) and communication self-efficacy (t=2.320, p=.025) of nursing students. Based on these results, psychiatric and mental health clinical practice curriculums should be developed to improve nursing students' understanding of mental disorders and develop their communication ability with patients.
