Most of the piles are designed as group piles. In certain geotechnical environments, the installation of group piles causes heaving of the already installed piles. The unfavorable effects of pile heaving on pile bearing capacity have been well known to field engineers. However not many engineers pay enough attention to this subject. According to our recent researches, not only the bearing capacity but also the pile material could be seriously damaged due to the installation of nearby piles, especially with the cases of precast concrete piles. When the pull-out force due to installation of neighboring piles acting on the already installed precast concrete pile exceeds the shaft friction, pile heaving occurs. At the same time, if the pull-out force exceeds the allowable tensile strength of the precast concrete pile, tensile failure is inevitable, which is critical for the pile integrity. In other cases the pile material was not damaged but serious relaxation occurred as the results of pile heaving. In this paper, the pull-out mechanism due to the installation of group piles is explained.

The steel pipe of steel-concrete composite piles increases the pile strength and induces the ductile failure by constraining the deformation of the inner concrete. In this research, the load-movement relations and the reinforcement effect by the outer steel pipe in the steel-concrete composite pile were analyzed by performing three-dimensional numerical analyses, which can simulate the yielding behavior of pile material and the elasto-plastic behavior of soils. The parameters analyzed in the study include three pile materials of steel, concrete and composite, pile diameter, pile distance and loading direction. As the results, the axial capacity of the composite pile was about 73% larger than that of the steel pipe pile and about 14% larger than that of the concrete pile. In addition, the horizontal movement at the pile head of the composite pile was about 51% of that of the steel pile and about 19% of that of the concrete pile.
The lateral behavior characteristics of concrete group pile under the lateral load were examined by the laboratory model tests in this study. Piles were socketed 1D(D : pile diameter) in the concrete block, and model tests were executed on $2{\times}3$ group piles, of which the length were 11D, 15D and 20D. All results of loading tests under each condition was presented by the lateral load-displacement curves, and the displacements in the ground under the lateral loads were measured. As a results of model tests, as the ratio of pile length/diameter(L/D) was decreased, the yielding load and the lateral displacement at that load were increased. The yielding load was evaluated as the load at lateral displacement of 15 mm. The yielding loads at the pile length of 11D, 15D and 20D were 11.7, 6.2kN and 3.4kN. The lateral displacements of pile in the ground under each condition were measured linearly and the failure occurred at the location where the piles were socketed in concrete block.
The steel pipe of steel-concrete composite piles increases the pile strength and induces the ductile failure by constraining the deformation of the hiller concrete. The results showed that the axial capacity of the composite pile was about 90% larger than that of the steel pipe pile while similar to that of the concrete pile. At the allowable movement criteria, the horizontal capacity of the composite pile was about 50% lager than that of the steel pile and about 22% larger than that of the concrete pile.
In this study, three dimensional numerical analyses were performed with variation of pile spacing (S=3D, 4D, 5D) to compare the behaviour of single pile and pile group with cap in granite soil. In order to compare and analyze the lateral resistance of single pile and pile group by changing pile spacing, the pile group with array of $1{\times}3$ was employed. To reduce the computation time the symmetric boundary condition was used. And Druker-Prager model and elasticity model were used for granite soil and for concrete pile and cap, respectively. Using the analyses results of pile group in granite soil under lateral loading, p-y curve for pile group and single pile with changing pile spacing was drawn. With p-y curve p-multiplier was evaluated. As a result of analysis, the value of p-multiplier was increased with increasing pile spacing under 1.0 due to pile shadow effects.
This paper deals with the results for a numerical analysis of single piles and pile groups in multi-layers soil(granite soil-clay-granite soil) subjected to monotonous lateral loading using the ABAQUS finite element software. The investigated variables in this study include free head and embedded capped single pile, pile diameter (0.5m), pile length (10m), and pile groups. Numerical analyses were conducted by variation of spacing piles(s=3D, 4D, 5D) to compare the behaviour of single pile without cap and group pile. The $1{\times}3$ pile group(leading pile, middle pile, trail pile) was selected to investigate the individual pile and group lateral resistance, the distribution of the resistance among the piles. The analysis model of clay and the material of granite soil was modeled by using Druker-Prager constitutive relationship and existing treatise respectively. The pile was considered as a elastic circular concrete pile. As a result, the more pile space was extended, the value of P-multiplier is appeared to be less effective to leading pile. The lateral resistance of single-layer showed approximately 4-20% larger than the multi-layers.
This paper describes the results for a numerical analysis of'single piles and pile oops in clayey soils subjected to monotonous lateral loading using the ABAQUS finite element software. The investigated variables in this study include free head and embedded capped single piles, pile diameter (1.0 m, 0.5 m), pile length (7.0 m, 10.0 m), and pile groups. The 1$\times$3 pile group was selected to investigate the individual pile and group lateral resistance, the distribution of the resistance among the piles, the effects of lateral stresses in front of and on the sides of the piles, and the effect of a cap on the lateral resistance of the leading pile. The soil was modeled using Cam-clay constitutive relationship and the pile was considered as a elastic circular concrete pile. The results show that the size of the cap influences lateral capacity of sin pile. The results also show in pile groups, the pile-soil-pile interaction and the cap effect the resistance in the leading pile, and the p-multiplier for the leading pile of greater than 1.0 was able to be obtained.

The purpose of this study is to introduce design practice for transverse reinforcement in piles where the top of the pile is free-standing above the ground in accordance with AASHTO LRFD Design Specification. Based on the relevant requirements, the amount and spacing of transverse spiral reinforcement is given for the two different pile types, namely piles with pile cap and pile bents. In addition, a recommended design procedure is introduced depending on the predicted behaviour of the piles from the analysis.

The use of pile foundations has become more popular in recent years, as the combined action of the pile cap and the piles can increase the bearing capacity, reduce settlement, and the piles can be arranged so as to reduce differential deflection in the pile cap. Piles are relatively long, slender members that transmit foundation loads through soil strata of low bearing capacity to deeper soil or rock strata having a high bearing capacity. In this study analysis of pile cap with considering different parameters like depth of the pile cap, width and breadth of the pile cap, type of piles and different types of soil which affect the behaviour of pile cap foundation is carried out by using Finite Element Software ANSYS. For understanding the settlement behaviour of pile cap foundation, parametric studies have been carried out in four types of clay by varying pile cap dimensions with two types of piles namely normal and under-reamed piles for different group of piles. Furthermore, the analysis results of settlement and stress values for the pile cap with normal and under-reamed piles are compared. From the study it can be concluded that settlement values of pile cap with under-reamed pile are less than the settlements of pile cap with normal pile. It means that the ultimate load bearing capacity of pile cap with under-reamed piles are greater than the pile cap with normal piles.

As plan connecting island to island or island to land is needed, a lot of long-span bridge is being designed lately in Southern part of Korea. With development of pile equipment, overhanging large-scaled concrete pile are adopted to foundation type of main tower or pylon. About the number of 15~30 group piles per tower foundation is designed to resist long-spaning super-structure load, but by restricted condition of site investigation cost, a few boring-hole tests are performed to identify sub-ground layers. Up to now, direct-curved method connecting two or three known boring logs and representative interval method are usually used to evaluate unknown depth and rock properties at locations where piles are constructed. Because this approach is not logical and so rough, much difference occurs between designed length of piles and real length of it. In this paper, using a lot of various prediction method(reciprocal distance method, inverse square distance method and kriging method etc.), we suggest optimum length of group piles.
