In order to select a proper ground improvement technology and to assess the quality and rate of improvement in the soft deposits. it is essential to characterize in-situ properties of the soft marine clay layer that may have many thin silt or sand seams. In this paper, both piezocone and flat dilatometer tests were performed to characterize in situ properties of a marine clay. Both tests provided quite similar site classifications, and in both tests the penetration pore water pressure was the better indicator for the classification of marine clay layer, especially in which sand or silt seams are frequently interbedded. Undrained strengths determined by both the cone tip resistance and the excess pore water pressure measured from piezocone were very similar in clayey soil layers. And the untrained strength determined by dilatometer had an approximately average value of undiained strengths obtained from piezocone. In addition, the theoretical time factor that can consider pore pressure dissipation effect during cone penetration may provide a reliable estimation of the coefficient of consolidation, especially for a coastal site which includes many silt or sand fractions or seams.

The purpose of this study is to test performances of 14 types of root barrier materials by applying testing plants and soils suitable for weather and natural features of Korea. For testing plants, Plioblastus pygmaed Mitford A. and Pyracantha angustifolia have been selected. For testing soil, mixture of pearlite and peat moss in 3:1 ratio(volume). Testing container has been fabricated with duplicated structure having inner and outer containers. And the outer container has 2 hinges on its side wall to allow opening and closing. Wet rock wool with 50mm in thickness has been inserted between inner and outer containers to allow root to penetrate through root barrier material and continue to grow. We planted 12 Plioblastus pygmaed Mitford A. and 4 Pyracantha angustifolia per one testing container. Three testing samples have been made for 1 type of root barrier material, which become a total 42 specimens. Planted testing samples have been installed within the greenhouse, which will be observed regularly for 2 years from now on. We started test from July 11, 2008 and had performed intermediate observations every month for initial 3 months. From the 3rd intermediate observation on Sept. 18, we confirmed that 6 types of root barrier materials have penetrated roots. Even though two types of them(EDPM Sheet, Polyethylene Sheet) have been generally used as root barrier materials for roof planting system, all of three testing samples have a lot of penetrated roots. This result proves that it is not reasonable to introduce testing methods of root barrier from Europe or Japan.

This study was carried out to suggest an experimental base in selecting the cold tolerance of plants. The cold tolerance of the plants were subject to laboratory low temperature treatments and cold processing time were evaluated using both electrolyte leakage and regrowth test. The Logistic model of nonlinear regression analysis was used to evaluate the lethal temperatures that were predicted with the range of $-16.1{\sim}-24.4^{\circ}C$. The order of low-temperature resistance was Sedum reflexum > S. spurium > Ophiopogon japonicus > S. album > S. takevimense > Dianthus chinensis. At the lowest temperature of $13.4^{\circ}C$ the electrolyte leakage value of the plants were lower than 50% demonstrating that they could be applied stably to the roof installed in Korea during the winter with the lowest temperature of $-13.5^{\circ}C$.

We studied two research items that can be undetermined issues in the artificial seed production of the Japanese scallops, Patinopecten yessoensis, batch-specific quality of the reproductive outputs and nursery acclimation, in the embayed waters of Yangyang, Gangwon, Korea. The first batch of the spawner showed better results in terms of survival, growth, and resistance against parasitic ciliate infection over the second batch that was obtained in 5 days after first batch from the same spawner. The early attached spats directly placed in the farming ground (the unacclimated) were resistant against the water current of the open environment, by showing survival of about 80% for a month, a normal survival compared with other results. However, the spat survival during the nursery acclimation was significantly lowered in comparison with that in the unacclimated condition (P<0.01). We discussed the research results of the two items, particularly focusing on their availability for mass seed production for aquaculture in the Korean coastal waters of the East Sea (Sea of Japan).
New breeding method by genetic engineering is expected as a key technology to solve food shortage due to the growing world population in the year 2000s. Many genetically modified organisms (GMOs) were already developed and the commercial cultivation had started. The first GMO, Flavr Savr tomato, which rotted at a much slower pace than ordinary ones, was developed in US in 1994. Since then, over than 70 different agricultural products including corn, cotton, soybean, papaya, potato, and squash made with genetically modified plants are reportedly on sale worldwide. Supporters favor the GMOs because they have greater yields, longer shelf lives and stronger resistance to disease and insects. On the other hand, opponents say that the supporters ignore a potential danger that they may damage the environment as well as human beings. To assure the safe development and use of GMOs as food and other biotech products, the possible risks on biological environment and human health should be throughly examined and regulated by developer and government. Because the biosafety problem is a global, environmental, and trade issue, a new international treaty is under development. The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety was adopted at the 1 st Extraordinary Conference of Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity which was held at Mont-real, Canada, Jan. 29th, 2000. The adoption of the Protocol is seen as a breakthrough in that it is based on the" Precautionary Principle" despite scientific uncertainties surrounding potential risks that GMOs may inflict on human health and the environment and that it has laid the ground for introduction of specific steps to handle international trading of GMOs. In this paper, the authors would like to introduce the current status and perspective of environmental and human risk assessment of GMOs.t of GMOs.

The high-power 6.6 kV XLPE (or CV) cables at Korean electric power stations have been in operation for the last 40 years. Most of the XLPE cables starts deteriorating in 6-8 years from the operating instant of time, some cables may be breakdown at any moment even though they were installed in recent years, causing, huge socioeconomic losses. In order to prevent unexpected cable accident, the operating status of power cables should be monitored in regularly, timely bases. We have invented a device in order to systematically monitor and prevent an abrupt accidents of high-power cables in operation at power station. It has been installed at Korean Western Power Co. Ltd. at Taean, and operating normally for the last 4 years. In this paper, we introduce the functions and operating principles of the measuring device, and present the relationship between humidity and insulation status of XLPE cables for the load of electric turbine generator.

An free-fall object is received only force of gravity. Movement that only accept gravity is free-fall movement, and a free-falling object is free falling body. In other words, free falling body is only freely falling objects under the influence of gravity, regardless of the initial state of objects movement. In this paper, we assume, ignoring the resistance of the air, and the free-fall acceleration by the height does not change within the range of the short distance in the vertical direction. Under these assumptions, we can know about time and maximum height to reach the peak point from jumping vertically upward direction, time and speed of the car return to the starting position, and time and speed when the car fall to the ground. It can be measured by jumping degree and risk of accident from car or motorcycle in telematics.
This paper examines the results of full-scale field tests on micropiles and side resistance is evaluated with respect to axial displacements and soil properties. Both cohesive and cohesionless soils are included in this evaluation. For all practical purposes, the developed load-displacement relationship and the geotechnical soil properties for each micropile and soil type can be used to represent the available data well through normalized average values and empirical correlations. There is a significant difference in load-carrying capacity between micropiles and drilled shafts that results primarily from the micropile pressure-grouting installation effects on the state of stress in the ground. The results show that micropiles can have a significant increase of capacity over larger-diameter drilled shafts at shallower depths with D/B < 100 or so. In cohesive soils, the typical increase is on the order of 1.5 with values as high as 2.5. For cohesionless soils, the typical increases are in the range of 1.5 to 2.5 with values as high as 6.
In this study, the tests were carried out for the behavior according to method of constrained nail head of slope reinforced with soil nail under dynamic loading, by using shaking table. Shaking table tests were carried out by applying Hachinohe seismic wave having the long-period characteristics and Ofunato seismic wave having short-period characteristics, as changing constrained and unconstrained condition of nail head, and so on. Failure mode, ground acceleration characteristics, vertical displacement and horizontal displacement of slope were compared and analyzed on the basis of results obtained from the test. Results of carrying out shaking table test showed that both short-period wave and long-period wave had large effects on slope, and constraint of nail head was found to have large shear resistance for dynamic load. And it was confirmed that stability of slope under seismic loading was largely improved by constrained head of soil nail.
Laboratory and in-situ tests were conducted to evaluate the cone factors for the layers with low plasticity containing a lot of silty and sand soils from the west coast (Incheon, Hwaseong and Gunsan areas) and its applicability was evaluated based on these results. The cone factors were evaluated from 19 to 23 based on unconfined compression strengths (qu), from 13 to 13.8 based on simple CU strengths and from 11.6 to 13.1 based on field vane strengths, respectively. The unconfined compression strengths of undisturbed silty soil samples with low plasticity were considerably underestimated due to the change of in-situ residual effective stress during sampling. Half of unconfined compression strength (qu/2) based cone factors of silty soils with low plasticity fluctuated and were approximately 1.8 times higher than simple CU based values of these soils. When evaluating cone factors of these soils, it should be judged overall on the physical properties such as the grain size distribution and soil plasticity and on the fluctuation of the corrected cone resistance and the sleeve friction due to the distribution of sandseam in the ground including pore pressure parameter.
