The hydrodynamic characteristics of amphibious assault vehicles are investigated using commercial CFD code, STAR-CCM+. Resistance performances of a displacement-type vehicle and a semi-planing type vehicle are analyzed in calm water. The self-propelled model is also computed for the semi-planing type vehicle. All computations are performed using an overset mesh system and a RANS based flow-solver coupled with a two-degree of freedom equations of motion. A moving reference frame is applied to simulate revolutions of impeller blades for a waterjet propulsion system. Grid dependency tests are performed to evaluate discretization errors for the mesh systems. The numerical analysis results are compared with the experimental results obtained from model tests. It is shown that RANS is capable of investigating the resistance and self-propulsion characteristics of high-speed amphibious assault vehicles. It is also found that a fully covered side skirt, which is covering tracks, reduces resistance and stern trim, besides increasing propulsive efficiency.
Bridge fire hazard has become a growing concern over the last decade due to the rapid increase of ground transportation of hazardous materials and resulting fire incidents. The lack of fire safety provisions in steel bridges can be a significant issue owing steel thermal properties that lead to fast degradation of steel properties at elevated temperatures. Alternatively, the development of composite action between steel girders and concrete decks can increase the fire resistance of steel bridges and meet fire safety requirements in some applications. This paper reviews the fire problem in steel bridges and the fire behavior of composite steel-concrete bridge girders. A numerical model is developed to trace the fire response of a typical bridge girder and is validated using measurements from fire tests. The selected bridge girder is composed by a hot rolled steel section strengthened with bearing stiffeners at midspan and supports. A concrete slab sitting on the top of the girder is connected to the slab through shear studs to provide full composite action. The validated numerical model was used to investigate the fire resistance of real scale bridge girders and the effect of the composite action under different scenarios (standard and hydrocarbon fires). Results showed that composite action can significantly increase the fire resistance of steel bridge girders. Besides, fire severity played an important role in the fire behavior of composite girders and both factors should be taken into consideration in the design of steel bridges for fire safety.
While the interests on the environmental problem during the construction are increasing, the use of low noise-vibration auger-drilled pilling is increasing to solve noise and vibration problem in pilling. Therefore, in Korea, SIP(Soil-Cement Injected Precast Pile) method is mainly used as auger-drilled pilling. However, there is no proper design criteria compatible with the ground condition of Korea, so which is most wanted. To improve and supplement this situation, direct shear tests between SIP pile skin interface and soil were executed on various conditions. Through the analysis of test results, skin resistance characteristics of SIP were investigated thoroughly. Also, the nonlinear unit skin resistance capacity model with SM, SC soil were suggested.
In the present study, immersion test using artificial seawater was performed to evaluate the resistance of mortar specimens with or without ground granulated blast-furnace slag (SG) and fly ash (FA). Another variable was the fineness levels of SG (4,450, 6,000 and 8,000 ㎠/g). From the results of the immersion test for 270 days of exposure, the excellent resistance to seawater attack for SG mortar mixtures, especially in a high fineness levels, was confirmed. However, the reductions in compressive strength of FA mortar specimens was similar to those of OPC mortar specimens irrespective of replacement of FA.. In order to understand the deterioration mechanism due to seawater attack, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were also carried out. Some reactants such as ettringite, gypsum, brucite and Friedel's salt were possibly detected through XRD technique.

In this study, portland cement (PC) has been partially replaced with a Class F fly ash (FA) at level of 70 % to produce high-volume FA (HVFA) concrete (F70). F70 was modified by replacing FA at levels of 10 and 20 % with silica fume (SF) and ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) and their equally combinations. All HVFA concrete types were compared to PC concrete. After curing for 7, 28, 90 and 180 days the specimens were tested in compression and abrasion. The various decomposition phases formed were identified using X-ray diffraction. The morphology of the formed hydrates was studied using scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated higher abrasion resistance of HVFA concrete blended with either SF or equally combinations of SF and GGBS, whilst lower abrasion resistance was noted in HVFA blended with GGBS.
With the transmission line the ratio of lightning breakdown the while whole breaking down is occupying a high share with average 72%, is a tendency which increases continuously. In order decreasing the back flashover faults from like this lightning breakdown, it is very important to maintain grounding resistance of tower below target. In this paper, we synthetically analyzed the grounding resistance reduction effect of tower foundation and standard ground connection from construction site, and investigated efficiency for ways to increase the length of counter poise and expand the size of conductivity concrete materials.
Soil nailing is in-situ ground improvement technique of reinforcing soils using passive inclusions for the purpose of slope stability. Also soil nailing, in general, was used and studied as a reinforcement technique at cut slope, but this paper presents the results of study for soil nailing application as a reinforcement technique at the banking over slided slope. In-situ pull-out tests of nails, instrumented with strain gauges, were performed to investigate the maximum pull-out load and to calculate the unit side resistance in each different layer. And the apparent average unit side resistance of this study was compared with that of other sites installed at cut slope.
The numerical study was conducted using the equation of Vanapalli et al.(1996) related shear strength of unsaturated soils. Angle of shearing resistance(${\Phi}^b$) and angle of internal friction(${\Phi}^{\prime}$) appear identically in lower suction range, but angle of shearing resistance(${\Phi}^b$) has non-linearity as suction increases. Nevertheless, the numerical study was conducted using angle of shearing resistance(${\Phi}^b$) in even lower suction range because of limit of program function. However, behavior of real ground on applying numerical study can be analysed wrong by it. Therefore in this paper numerical analysis on applying the equation of Vanapalli et al.(1996) and ${\Phi}^b$ has been compared about unsaturated slope considering continuous rainfall.
This study is to investigate for the frost resistance of high-strength concrete using finely ground granulated blast-furnace slag with experimental parameters, such as water/binder ratio, replacement proportion of granulated blast-furnace slag, air content and methods of curing. The high-strength concrete using granulated blast-furnace slag is effective to resist frost and decrease scaling. The more increasable replacement proportion of granulated blast-furnace slag is, the better the effect is. The high-strength concrete using granulated blast-furnace slag needs hydrating adequately to prevent deterioration by drying in the early curing period. The micro structure of high-strength concrete, increased to the pore number with diameter of 0.03~0.1mm, is changed by using granulated blast-furnace slag, but is presented differently according to water/binder ration and replacement proportion of granulated blast-furnace slag.
