  • A novel structural damage detection method with a new damage index has been recently proposed by the authors based on the statistical moments of dynamic responses of shear building structures subject to white noise ground motion. The statistical moment-based damage detection (SMBDD) method is theoretically extended in this paper with general application. The generalized SMBDD method is more versatile and can identify damage locations and damage severities of many types of building structures under various external excitations. In particular, the incomplete measurements can be considered by the proposed method without mode shape expansion or model reduction. Various damage scenarios of two general forms of building structures with incomplete measurements are investigated in consideration of different excitations. The effects of measurement noise are also investigated. The damage locations and damage severities are correctly identified even when a high noise level of 15% and incomplete measurements are considered. The effectiveness and versatility of the generalized SMBDD method are demonstrated.

  • This paper presents the design and fabrication of a LC voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) using 1-poly 6-metal mixed signal CMOS process. To obtain the high-quality factor inductor in LC resonator, patterned-ground shields (PGS) is placed under the symmetric inductor to reduce the effect from image current of resistive Si substrate. Moreover, due to the incapability of using thick top metal layer of which the thickness is over $2{\mu}m$, as used in many RF CMOS process, the structure of dual-metal layer in which we make electrically short circuit between the top metal and the next metal below it by a great number of via materials along the metal traces is adopted. The circuit operated from 2.63 GHz to 3.09 GHz tuned by accumulation-mode MOS varactor. The corresponding tuning range was 460 MHz. The measured phase noise was -115 dBc/Hz @ 1MHz offset at 2.63 GHz carrier frequency and the current consumption and the corresponding power consumption were about 2.6 mA and 4.68 mW respectively.

  • In this paper, we proposed the compensation structures for the enhanced directivity of CPW(Coplanar waveguide) directional couplers with finite-extent backed conductor. The proposed compensation structures are. realized by expanding the slot width between signal line and ground plane in center region of couplers. The CPW couplers with expanded slot have the same phase velocity for even and odd mode because of added inductance and changed capacitance appropriately, so the enhanced directivity is accomplished. The designed CPW directional couplers have good directivity and matching characteristic at center frequency in simulation and measurement.

  • Intuition is an abstract concept which is most often thought of as a nonrational, nonscientific mode of thought. However, since there are so many amorphous definitions of intuition that it seems important to clarify the meaning of this concept. Therefore, this study use the process of Walker & Avant’s concept analysis to define of the concept of intuition Attributes of intuition were defined as 1) Knowledge of truth that is difficult to explicate ; 2) A type of immediate knowing ; 3) Knowlwdge without reasining analysis ; 4) Knowledge that is attained based on virtue character which integrates all matter and is not attained through individual experience. Antecedents of intuition consists of 1) as ground for knowledge or truth that is not availables to trace through the analytic procedures ; & 2) the flow of Ki which unites human beings and the universe. Consequences of intuition events or incidents occuring as a result of the concept consist of verification of the truth though analytic procedures and application of knowledge in both theoretical and practical ways. To develop intuitive ability, as an educator should not only make studies in recognizine, analysing and teaching concepts related to logical, rational decision making but should also recognize and teach concepts related to intuitive components of making decisions in clinical practice and classroom learning as well.

  • Planar electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter has significant engineering significance to power electronic system integration and miniaturization. However, the value of differential mode capacitance cannot meet the demand of noise suppression because of the size limit of ceramics. In this case, the EMI filter of novel multilayers is recommended to address this issue. A novel integrated structure of EMI filter based on multilayer ceramic is proposed in this study. The inductance and capacitance of the new structure can be designed separately, which is an advantage in manufacturing. Insertion loss is measured more closely to the actual situation in this study, which is different from the condition where source and load impedances are both 50 Ω. In the process of designing a novel EMI filter, noise impedance is considered. Moreover, the prototype is created and applied to a small switching power supply, which verifies the effectiveness of the developed EMI filter.

  • A modified procedure is presented for assessing the seismic response of elastic non-proportionate multistory buildings. This procedure retains the simplicity of the methodology presented by the author in earlier papers, but it presents higher accuracy in buildings composed by very dissimilar types of bents. As a result, not only frequencies and peak values of base resultant forces are determined with higher accuracy, but also the location of the first mode center of rigidity (m1-CR). The closeness of m1-CR with the axis passing through the centers of floor masses (mass axis) implies a reduced rotational response and it is demonstrated that in elastic systemsa practically translational response is obtained when this point lies on the mass axis.Besides, when common types of buildings are detailed as planar structures under a code load, this response is maintained in the inelastic phase of their response as a result of the almost concurrent yielding of all the resisting bents. This property of m1-CR can be used by the practicing engineer as a guideline to form a structural configuration which will sustain minimum rotational response, simply by allocating the resisting elements in such a way that this point lies close to the mass axis. Inelastic multistory building structures, detailed as above, may be regarded as torsionally balanced multistory systems and this is demonstrated in eight story buildings, composed by dissimilar bents, under the ground motions of Kobe 1995 (component KJM000) and Friuli 1976 (component Tolmezzo E-W).

  • In this paper, a 18 GHz oscillator is designed with the push-push method an fabricated by semi-MMIC process, in which the second harmonic is the main output signal with the suppressed fundamental mode. In semi-MMIC process, passive components with microstrip transmission line are implemented using MMIC process on semi-insulating GaAs substrate. Then, chip types of P-HEMT, resistors, and capacitors are connected through Au wire-bonding. Also, the ground plane is inserted around the circuit and connected each other with the back-side of substrate through Au wire-bonding instead of via-hole. The semi-MMIC push-push oscillator shows the output powder of -10.5 dBm, the fundamental frequency suppression of -17.3 dBc/Hz, and the phase noise of -97.9 dBc/Hz at the offset frequency of 100 kHz.

  • This paper deals with a single-phase dynamic voltage restorer(DVR) with a quasi Z-source topology. The proposed system based on a single-phase quasi Z-source PWM ac-ac converter which have features such as the input voltage and output voltage are sharing ground, and input current operates in continuous current mode(CCM). For the detection of voltage sag-swell, peak voltage detection method is applied. Also, the circuit principles of the proposed system are described. During the 60% severe voltage sag and 30% voltage swell, the proposed system controls the adding or missing voltage and maintains the rated voltage of sinusoidal waveform at the terminals of the critical loads. Finally, PSIM simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the proposed concept and theoretical analysis.

  • In this study, grindability of some representative engineering ceramics are experimentally investigated using resin bond diamond wheel with conventional surface grinding machine, and proper grinding conditions which can be obtained from various experimental results are established also for mechanical components which are proper to domestic circumstances with high reliability. And through the results of experiment, it is confirmed that grinding energies of the ceramics, especially in the case of $Al_2O_3$, are lower than steel with same machining condition in the conventional grinding because of their fine-brittle fracture mode type removal process, though the ceramics are well-known to unmachinable materials. And moreover, the total pass numbers needed for spark-out process to be completed are depend on their mechanical properties because that grinding stiffness is different from each other. The grinding force, ginding power and ground surface roughness are also measured and compared. Furthermore, the experiments carried out in this study, some useful results are obtained with can guide to grind engineering ceramics with conventional surface grinding machine.
