A Study on Roughness Measurement of Polished Surfaces Using Reflected Laser Beam Image (레이저빔 반사 화상을 이용한 연마면 거칠기 측정법에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents the principle and experimental results of a non-contact surface roughness measurement by means of screen projected pattern of lase beam reflected from a polished surface. In the reflected laser beam pattern especially from a fine surface like ground or polished one, light intensity varies from the center fo the image to its boundary as the Gaussian distribution. The standard deviation of a light intensity distribution is assumed to be a good non-contact estimator for measuring the surface roughnes, because the light reflectivity is known to be well related with the surface roughness. This method doesn't need to discriminate between the specularly reflected light and the diffusely reflected one, whereas the scattered laser intensity method must do. Nor it needs to adjust the change of light intensity caused by environmental lights or specimen materials. Reflected laser beam pattern narrowly spreads out in the vertical direction to tiny scratches on the polished surface due to abrasives. The deeper the scratch the more the dispersion, which means the rougher surface. The standard deviation of the pattern is nearly in proportion to the surface roughness. Measurement errors by this method are shown to be below 10 percent compared with those obtained by a common contact method. The inclination of measuring unit from the normal axis causes the measurement errors up to 10 percent for an angle of 4 degree. Therefore the proposed method can be used as an on-the-machine quick roughness estimator within 10 percent measurement error.

  • A solar photovoltaic system is composed of a module mounting structure, supporting trunk, and a control unit that supplies generated electrical power to an external power grid or a load. The efficiency of the system depends on the incident solar light, so the mounting structure is installed to face the sun. However, because the sun always moves, systems that track the sun have better efficiency than fixed systems. The structure experiences wind pressure, snow load, seismic load, and structure weight. The wind pressure has the most serious effect on the structure. The pressure was obtained using finite element method for various gaps between modules and angles between the panel and the ground. The wind pressure is lowest when the gap is zero, and it increases with the inclination angle. Based on the results, a mounting structure module was designed.

On-board Realtime Orbit Parameter Generator for Geostationary Satellite (정지궤도위성 탑재용 실시간 궤도요소 생성기)

  • This paper proposes an on-board orbit data generation algorithm for geostationary satellites. The concept of the proposed algorithm is as follows. From the ground, the position and velocity deviations with respect to the assumed reference orbit are computed for 48 hours of time duration in 30 minutes interval, and the generated data are up-loaded to the satellite to be stored. From the table, three nearest data sets are selected to compute position and velocity deviation for asked epoch time by applying $2^{nd}$ order polynomial interpolation. The computed position and velocity deviation data are added to reference orbit to recover absolute orbit information. Here, the reference orbit is selected to be ideal geostationary orbit with a zero inclination and zero eccentricity. Thanks to very low computational burden, this algorithm allows us to generate orbit data at 1Hz or even higher. In order to support 48 hours autonomy, maximum 3K byte memory is required as orbit data storage. It is estimated that this additional memory requirement is acceptable for geostationary satellite application.

  • To investigate major influencing factors on earth pressure acting on an arch-shaped cut and cover tunnel, Monte Carlo simulation based quantitative sensitivity analysis was carried out for mechanical properties of ground as well as excavation configuration-related design factors. From the sensitivity analysis, it was intended that effects of earth pressures from different influencing factors on a cut and cover tunnel should be numerically identified. Output factors used in the sensitivity analysis such as vertical and horizontal earth pressures at different tunnel positions were obtained from the finite element analysis. In this study, it was revealed that depending upon positions where horizontal as well as vertical earth pressures were acting, they were differently influenced by the same input factors. In addition, earth pressures acting an cut and cover tunnel depended mainly on the embankment at crown and the inclination of cut slope.

Study on Correlation between Large Earthquake-Induced Underground Structure Uplift and Geological Settings (대지진에 의한 지하구조물 부상과 지질학적 특성의 상관성 연구)

  • During the 2004 Niigata-ken Chuetsu, Japan, earthquake, more than 1,450 underground structures, known as sewer manhole, were uplifted up to 1.5m in Nagaoka and Ojiya city. The uplift damage can be a serious matter because they not only hinder the flow of wastewater systems, as a part of lifeline systems, but also disturb traffic flows. For restoration works, an open-cut investigation of damaged wastewater system was conducted by the Nagaoka city government. The results from the investigation compiled valuable data sets for buried pipeline damage due to earthquakes. In the present study, the factors affecting the uplift amount of the underground structure is investigated by using the data sets which include locations of damaged sections and inclination of pipeline before and after the earthquake and the SPT borehole logs in the affected area. Correlation analysis between the underground structure uplift and the geological settings in the affected area revealed that ground water depth and original subsoil, including thickness of clay layer, SPT N-value and fill thickness are the key parameters for the uplift phenomenon.

Automatic Left/Right Boom Angles Control System for Upland Field (전자용 붐방제기의 붐의 좌우 경사각 자동제어)

  • Boom sprayers have been known by their excellency in field efficiency worker’s safety and pest control efficacy. The boom sprayer in Korea that was developed for paddy field is not suitable for upland field of which shape is irregular and inclination is steep, due to heavy chemical tank long boom width and manual on-off control of spraying. The goal of the study was to develope a boom control system that could control boom angles of left and right boom automatically and independently corresponding to local field slope. The prime mover was selected as a cultivating tractor. Main results of this study were as follows. 1. Ultrasonic sensor whose response time was 0.1s and response angle was within $\pm$20$^{\circ}$was selected to measure distance. Voltage output of the sensor(X, Volt) had a highly significant linear relationship with the vertical distance between the sensor and ground surface(Y, mm) as follows; Y=0.0036X-0.437 2. Left and right section of the boom could be folded up by a position control device(on-off control) which could control the left and right boom independently corresponding to local slope by equalizing distances between the sensor and boom at the center and left/right boom. Most reliable DB(dead band) was experimentally selected to be 75$\Omega$(6cm). 3. At traveling velocity of 0.3~0.5m/s RMS of error between desired and achieved height was less than 4.5cm The developed boom angle controller and boom linkage system were evaluated to be successful in achieving the height control accuracy target of $\pm$10cm.

  • In the navigation for a mobile robot, the collision avoidance with unexpected obstacles is essential for the safe navigation and it is independent of the technique used to control the mobile robot. This paper presents a new collision avoidance algorithm using neural network for the safe navigation of the autonomous mobile robot equipped with CAN and ultrasonic sensors. A tracked wheeled mobile robot has a stability and an efficiency to move on a rough ground. And its mechanism is simple. However it has difficulties to recognize its surroundings. Because the shape of the tracked wheeled mobile robot is a square type, sensor modules are generally located on the each plane surface of 4 sides only. In this paper, the algorithm using neural network is proposed in order to avoid unexpected obstacles. The important character of the proposed algorithm is to be able to detect the distance and the angle of inclination of obstacles. Only using datum of the distance and the angle, informations about the location and shape of obstacles are obtained, and then the driving direction is changed. Consequently, this algorithm is capable of real time processing and available for a mobile robot which has few sensor modules or the limited sensing range such as a tracked wheeled mobile robot. Effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is illustrated through a computer simulation and an experiment using a real robot.

  • Biped robot with high DOF has instability in mechanism. Therefore, it is important to guarantee walking stability of biped robot. Biped robot can stably walk on the flat ground using static walking patterns. However, walking stability of robot becomes increasingly worse on the uneven terrain. In the paper, we propose a robust walking algorithm of biped robot with motion stabilization to solve the problem The proposed algorithm was designed to stabilize walking motions based on the inclination of robot body using a gyro sensor and a accelerometer equipped in the center of the upper body. If unstable motions are recognized, angles of each joints are modified to increase stability by using compensation of angles of lower legs. The experimental results show that biped robot performs stable walking on the uneven terrain.

Characteristic of Bearing Capacity of Shallow Foundation upon Clay Ground Replaced by Sands Depending on Bearing Capacity Ratio (모래로 치환된 점토지반의 지지력비에 따른 얕은 기초의 지지력 특성)

  • In this study, we considered the bearing capacity of strip footing over clay layers partially replaced by sand. The FEM analysis is performed to calculate the ultimate bearing capacity. Partial replacement is defined by multiples of footing width(B) and inclination of sides. The cases(B'=inf.) of sand layers equal to clay layers are preferentially conducted. The baring capacity of B'=inf. is comparative value for bearing capacity of partial replacement layers. ${\beta}$ is the ratio of ultimate bearing capacity of B'=inf and partial ultimate bearing capacity replacement. ${\beta}$ is used to analyze the characteristic of bearing capacity of clay layers partially replaced by sand. Each of the three undrained shear strengths of clay and friction angles of sand is considered. The result of this analysis shows that ${\beta}$ depends on sand depth.

  • There lies more subjectivity in the methods and process of showing the Koreaness, and design methods cannot be defined with only one answer key, which is probable to cause much difficulty. Until now, the traditional Korean features have been tried by quite a few designers whose approaches deserves for the reference to understand the trends of expressing the Koreaness and develop the ways of its expression. Therefore, this study first considers the trial processes of design methods in reconsidering the Koreaness done by many artists in terms of previous studies and researches. Then this tries to make a frame to analyze the Koreaness theoretically after studying the approaches knowledge about traditional architecture designs widely used as design concepts, and to examine specific cases which reflects them in their interior architecture. All of these studies are aimed at get the understandings on trends and methods demonstrating the Koreaness in modern interior design. This study ranges from the artists, who have made efforts to express Koreaness in 1990s and after, to their artworks. As study methods, pre-study and reference researches had been done to examine the knowledge factors on the ground of the theory of D.G Jansson, to give a theory to the understanding of its methods and tendencies, and to build the frame for case analysis. As a result, in traditional architecture, spacial design gets the prominent priority and other factors are not far from different. In formative approachesthe expression inclination on material factor is outstanding. Consequently, these two approaches have analytic elements in difference but spacial design and materiality have prominently in common to express the Koreaness.
