  • Presently, domestic SCP method with low replacement ratio is required as alternative in order to overcome the profitability of the sand resource because of the deficiency phenomenon of the sand resource by the actual condition design and construction is made by SCP method with low replacement ratio more than 70% for the port construction in the safe side. Sand compaction pile(SCP) method has been mainly used to improve the properties of soft clay or loose sandy ground. In design of SCP at soft clay ground, it is very important to determine the stress concentration ratio of composite ground relevant to the area replacement ratio. In this study, 2-dimensional FEM analyses were carried out to evaluate the stress concentration ratio of composite ground depending upon the area replacement ratio. When the interpretation result replacement ratio was 30%, the stress assigned rate showed and as the replacement ratio was high, the stress assigned rate according to the sinkage showed the low stress assigned rate.

  • The setting of the target area for ground stability evaluation during ground excavation is categorized into theoretical and empirical estimation methods and numerical analysis methods. Generally, the applied theoretical and empirical estimation methods include those by Peck (1969), Caspe (1966), and Clough et al. (1990). The numerical analysis method comprehensively considered the current status of the task section (maximum excavation depth section, ground condition vulnerable section, etc.). It reflected the results of performing two and three-dimensional numerical analyses on the weakest section. Therefore, this study shows an example of setting the scope of influence when excavating the vertical and tunnel sections of a 000-line double-track private investment project through the above theoretical, empirical, and numerical analysis methods.

  • The discharge capacity testing apparatus using penetration method, being able to simulate in laboratory the condition of embedding plastic board drains in field, was developed to investigate consolidation characteristics of ground and to figure out discharge capacity of drains. The developed apparatus with a mandrel and penetrating device was designed to insert PBD into the ground prepared by previously applied pressure, being different from the conventional testing method that the drain was installed and the ground material was poured subsequently. Discharge capacity tests with the conventional apparatus as well as the newly developed one were performed to assess the applicability of the latter. As a result of tests, the conventional method showed delayed consolidation due to overall disturbance of ground and local deformation of drain caused by inhomogeneity of ground. Therefore discharge capacity of drain with the conventional apparatus was measured more or less larger than the expected values whereas discharge capacity with new one could be measured similar to the actual value in field.

  • In this paper, the behavior of underground strutted retaining structure under seismic condition in non-liquefiable dry cohesionless soil is analyzed numerically. The numerical model is validated against the published results obtained from a study on embedded cantilever retaining wall under seismic condition. The validated model is used to investigate the difference between the static and seismic response of the structure in terms of four design parameters, e.g., support member or strut force, wall moment, lateral wall deflection and ground surface displacement. It is found that among the different design parameters, the one which is mostly affected by the earthquake force is wall deflection and the least affected is the strut force. To get the best possible results under seismic condition, the embedment depth of the wall and thickness of the wall can be chosen as around 100% and 6% of the depth of final excavation level, respectively. The stiffness of the strut may also be chosen as $5{\times}105kN/m/m$ to achieve best possible performance under seismic condition.

  • Dynamic analysis of a typical concrete gravity dam-reservoir system is formulated by FE-(FE-TE) approach (i.e., Finite Element-(Finite Element-Truncation Element)). In this technique, dam and reservoir are discretized by plane solid and fluid finite elements. Moreover, the H-W (i.e., Hagstrom-Warburton) high-order condition imposed at the reservoir truncation boundary. This task is formulated by employing a truncation element at that boundary. It is emphasized that reservoir far-field is excluded from the discretized model. The formulation is initially reviewed which was originally proposed in a previous study. Thereafter, the response of Pine Flat dam-reservoir system is studied due to horizontal and vertical ground motions for two types of reservoir bottom conditions of full reflective and absorptive. It should be emphasized that study is carried out under high order of H-W condition applied on the truncation boundary. The initial part of study is focused on the time harmonic analysis. In this part, it is possible to compare the transfer functions against corresponding responses obtained by FE-(FE-HE) approach (referred to as exact method). Subsequently, the transient analysis is carried out. In that part, it is only possible to compare the results for low and high normalized reservoir length cases. Therefore, the sensitivity of results is controlled due to normalized reservoir length values.

  • This study aims to experimentally investigate ground settlement and ground movement around the square pipe by its penetration in sandy ground. A series of laboratory model tests were carried out with a small-scale auger equipment for penetration of a square pipe as well as a newly designed test box with a sand raining equipment. From the experiments, it is shown that a square pipe induces ground movement evenly around it in a low overburden condition. However, as the overburden becomes higher, ground movement by a square pipe is concentrated mainly above it. Especially, horizontal strain above the square pipe was mainly dominated by its penetration. In addition, sand surface movement is the smallest in case of the dimensionless penetration rate equal to 0.2. When its penetration rate of the square pipe is fixed, the rotation speed of auger controls surface movement whether it is settlement or heaving. Therefore, the selection of an optimal dimensionless rate for the square pipe is a key design factor to minimize ground settlement in a trenchless construction.

  • This study comparatively analyzes general walking shoes on the conical top foundation of the ground condition and the pressure distribution during walking with shoes that are currently under development. Two categories of footwear were used: general footwear and a footwear conical top foundation that is currently under development. Experiments were carried out on hard ground and sandy soil in 15 male twenties that satisfy the conditions of normal foot wearing 260 mm. The pressure during walking was measured using Techstorm's Wireless Insole System, and foot pressure was measured in 7 zones of the foot. Studies have shown different maximum forces, average pressures, and pressure distributions depending on the shoe and ground conditions. This study shows that shoes with general low pressure dispersion effects depending on the feet in hard ground and sand ground are different from shoes with the conical top foundation that is currently under development. It is expected that it will be useful for the development of shoes that can be worn in all hard ground and sandy ground by selecting various rubber materials through further research.

  • In this study, centrifuge model tests with 50 g gravitational condition were performed to evaluate the bearing capacity of very soft ground, improved by spreading geotextile and sand on the surface of ground, for the heavy machinery to be able to access. For undrained shear strength of ground model, prepared with the clay sampled from the field, being in the range of 3.1~11.7 kPa, bearing capacity tests were performed with the model footing and the loading system built to simulate the heavy machinery on the ground model treated with geotextile and sand. Test results were compared with theoretically and numerically evaluated ones. Test results about load-settlement curves showed that the bearing capacity increases with the increase of the undrained shear strength of ground. Punching shear or local shear failure was also observed. For a relatively low undrained shear strength of ground, settlement behavior is found to be crucial to evaluating the trafficability of machinery whereas bearing capacity becomes a dominant factor with the increase of undrained shear strength of ground. The method for assessing the bearing capacity of the ground related to trafficability of machinery is presented by acquiring the regression relationship between the contact pressure of machinery and settlements using load-settlement curves with the change of the undrained shear strength. Furthermore, results of numerical analyses about load-settlement relation are in relatively good agreement with those of centrifuge model test.

  • Appropriate investigation of ground condition near excavation face in tunnelling is an inevitable process for safe and economical construction. In this study mechanical parameters from drilling process for blasting were investigated for the purpose of predicting the ground condition, especially rock mass strength, ahead of tunnel face. Rock mass strength is one of the most important factors for classification of rock mass and making a decision of support type in underground construction. Several rock specimens which are considered homogeneous and having different strength values respectively were tested by hydraulic drill machines generally used. As a result, penetration rate is fairly related with rock mass strength among drilling parameters. It is also found that penetration rate increases along with the higher impact pressure even under same rock strength condition. It is finally suggested that new prediction method for rock mass strength using percussive pressure and penetration rate during drilling work can be utilized well in construction site.
