  • This paper describes the results of the development of the the unmanned aerial vehicle system integration laboratory(UAV SIL) for the integrated verification. This UAV SIL is designed to test the robustness of the UAV system including the operational logics and the flight control system behaviors under many abnormal and emergency conditions such as data-link losses, airborne subsystem failures, engine shut down conditions, and ground control station faults. This paper presents how to build the UAV SIL and how to verify the in-development UAV system through the UAV SIL.

  • A telemetry signal occurs the line-of-sight problem by the effect of geography in flight test. A fixed relay system or a mobile relay system is used to solve that problem in general but we propose an airborne telemetry relay system using aircraft in this paper. An airborne telemetry relay system receives the telemetry signal of the test vehicle and then retransmits it to the ground system. The receiving antenna which is a phased array antenna can be tilted to ${\pm}30^{\circ}$ beam direction by beam-forming and track the rapidly moving test vehicle in effect. The relay pod which is mounted to an aircraft consists of the front antenna and the side antenna. It receives S-band signal and then down-converts the frequency to L-band signal. As a result, that can remove the frequency interference on an aircraft while retransmitting.

  • TRiplet Ionospheric Observatory-CubeSat for Ion, Neutron, Electron & MAgnetic fields (TRIO-CINEMA) is a CubeSat with 3.14 kg in weight and 3-U ($10{\times}10{\times}30$ cm) in size, jointly developed by Kyung Hee University and UC Berkeley to measure magnetic fields of near Earth space and detect plasma particles. When a satellite is launched into orbit, it encounters ultra-high vacuum and extreme temperature. To verify the operation and survivability of the satellite in such an extreme space environment, experimental tests are conducted on the ground using thermal vacuum chamber. This paper describes the temperature control device and monitoring system suitable for CubeSat test environment using the thermal vacuum chamber of the School of Space Research, Kyung Hee University. To build the chamber, we use a general purpose thermal analysis program and NX 6.0 TMG program. We carry out thermal vacuum tests on the two flight models developed by Kyung Hee University based on the thermal model of the TRIO-CINEMA satellite. It is expected from this experiment that proper operation of the satellite in the space environment will be achieved.

  • Purpose: The overall objective of this study was to evaluate the vegetation fraction of soybeans, grown under different cropping conditions using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with a red, green, and blue (RGB) camera. Methods: Test plots were prepared based on different cropping treatments, i.e., soybean single-cropping, with and without herbicide application and soybean and barley-cover cropping, with and without herbicide application. The UAV flights were manually controlled using a remote flight controller on the ground, with 2.4 GHz radio frequency communication. For image pre-processing, the acquired images were pre-treated and georeferenced using a fisheye distortion removal function, and ground control points were collected using Google Maps. Tarpaulin panels of different colors were used to calibrate the multi-temporal images by converting the RGB digital number values into the RGB reflectance spectrum, utilizing a linear regression method. Excess Green (ExG) vegetation indices for each of the test plots were compared with the M-statistic method in order to quantitatively evaluate the greenness of soybean fields under different cropping systems. Results: The reflectance calibration methods used in the study showed high coefficients of determination, ranging from 0.8 to 0.9, indicating the feasibility of a linear regression fitting method for monitoring multi-temporal RGB images of soybean fields. As expected, the ExG vegetation indices changed according to different soybean growth stages, showing clear differences among the test plots with different cropping treatments in the early season of < 60 days after sowing (DAS). With the M-statistic method, the test plots under different treatments could be discriminated in the early seasons of <41 DAS, showing a value of M > 1. Conclusion: Therefore, multi-temporal images obtained with an UAV and a RGB camera could be applied for quantifying overall vegetation fractions and crop growth status, and this information could contribute to determine proper treatments for the vegetation fraction.

  • This paper presents a design approach for passive vibration control to reduce vertical vibrations transmitted to the control unit during hovering flight of a quadrotor drone. Ground vibration test simulation based on finite element model was performed for forced vibration analysis of the quadrotor drone. First, modal analysis was performed to evaluate dynamic characteristics. Forced vibration response analysis was then performed to obtain the steady-state response within the operating frequency range under the hovering flight condition. Furthermore, to obtain the vibration reduction effect, a viscous damping tape was applied at positions that could induce vibrations transmitted to the control unit under the same conditions. Such a passive vibration control approach was investigated. Relevant vibration reduction effect was assessed with respect to the application of damping materials and the attachment position.

  • In this study, a real-time Tactical UAS position compensation system based on image information developed to compensate for the weakness of location navigation information during GPS signal interference and jamming / spoofing attack is described. The Tactical UAS (KUS-FT) is capable of automatic flight by switching the mode from GPS/INS integrated navigation to DR/AHRS when GPS signal is lost. However, in the case of location navigation, errors accumulate over time due to dead reckoning (DR) using airspeed and azimuth which causes problems such as UAS positioning and data link antenna tracking. To minimize the accumulation of position error, based on the target data of specific region through image sensor, we developed a system that calculates the position using the UAS attitude, EO/IR (Electric Optic/Infra-Red) azimuth and elevation and numerical map data and corrects the calculated position in real-time. In addition, function and performance of the image information based real-time UAS position compensation system has been verified by ground test using GPS simulator and flight test in DR mode.

  • In this paper, we describe the design and performance of a prototype multi-rotor unmaned aerial vehicle( UAV) platform featuring an inertial measurement unit(IMU) based autonomous-flying for use in bluetooth communication environments. Although there has been a fair amount of study of free-flying UAV with multi-rotors, the more recent trend has been to outfit hexarotor helicopter with gimbal to support various services. This paper introduces the hardware and software systems toward very compact and autonomous hexarotors, where they can perform search, rescue, and surveillance missions without external assistance systems like ground station computers, high-performance remote control devices or vision system. The proposed system comprises the construction of the test hexarotor platform, the implementation of an IMU, mathematical modeling and simulation in the helicopter. Furthermore, the hexarotor helicopter with implemented IMU is connected with a micro controller unit(MCU)(ARM-cortex) board. The micro-controller is able to command the rotational speed of the rotors and to get the measurements of the IMU as input signals. The control simulation and experiment on the real system are implemented in the test platform, evaluated and compared against each other.

  • It is realized that the extraterrestrial matter is in ionized state, plasma, so the matter of this kind behaves as not expected because of its sensitiveness to electric and magnetic fields and its ability to carry electric currents. This kind of subtle change can be observed by an instrument for the magnetic field measurement, the magnetometer usually mounted on the rocket and the satellite, and based on the ground observatory. The magnetometer is a useful instrument for the spacecraft attitude control and the Earth's magnetic field measurements for the scientific purpose. In this paper, we present the preliminary design and the test results of the two onboard magnetometers of KARl's (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) sounding rocket, KSRIII, which will be launched during the period of 2001-02. The KSR-III magnetometers consist of the fluxgate magnetometer, MAG/AIM (Attitude Information Magnetometer) for acquiring the rocket flight attitude information, and of the search-coil magnetometer, MAG/SIM (Scientific Investigation Magnetometer) for the observation of the Earth's magnetic field fluctuations. With the MAG/AIM, the 3-axis attitude information can be acquired by the comparison of the resulting dc magnetic vector fields with the IGRF (International Geomagnetic Reference Field). The Earth's magnetic field fluctuations ranging from 10 to 1,000 Hz can also be observed with the MAG/SIM measurement.

  • The solar wind contributes to the formation of unique space environment called the Earth's magnetosphere by various interactions with the Earth's magnetic field. Thus the solar-terrestrial environment affects the Earth's magnetic field, which can be observed with an instrument for the magnetic field measurement, the magnetometer usually mounted on the rocket and the satellite and based on the ground observatory. The magnetometer is a useful instrument for the spacecraft attitude control as well as the Earth's magnetic field measurements for the spacecraft purpose. In this paper, we present the preliminary design and test results of the two onboard magnetometers of KARI's (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) sounding rocket, KSR-3, which will be launched four times during the period of 2001-02. The KSR-3 magnetometers consist of the fluxgate magnetometer, MAG/AIM (Attitude Information Magnetometer) for acquiring the rocket flight attitude information, and of the search-coil magnetometer, MAG/SIM (Scientific Investigation Magnetometer) for the observation of the Earth's magnetic field fluctuations. • COMS(Chollian) satellite which was launched on June 26, 2010 has three payloads for Ka-band communications, geostationary ocean color imaging and meteorological imaging. In order to make efficient use of the geostationary satellite, a concept of mission operations has been considered from the beginning of the satellite ground control system development. COMS satellite mission operations are classified by daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal operations. Daily satellite operations include mission planning, command planning and transmission, telemetry processing and analysis, ranging and orbit determination, ephemeris and event prediction, and wheel off-loading set point parameter calculation. As a weekly operation, North-South station keeping maneuver and East-West station keeping maneuver should be performed on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively. Spacecraft oscillator updating parameter should be calculated and uploaded once a month. Eclipse operations should be performed during a vernal equinox and autumnal equinox season. In this paper, operational validations of the major functions in COMS SGCS are presented for the first three month of in-orbit test operations. All of the major functions have been successfully verified and the COMS SGCS will be used for the mission operations of the COMS satellite for 7 years of mission life time and even more.
