  • Microstructural variation and strengthening effects with lamination methods of alumina fiber-reinforced ${\gamma}$-LiAlO2 matrixes for Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell(MCFC) were studied. The porosities of all matrix laminated by hot-pressing of two green sheets under 1 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 45$^{\circ}C$ for 1 min and by double-casting which the second layer cast on the first green sheet dried for 3.5h were more than 50%. The strength of the Al2O3 fiber-reinforced matrix prepared by lamination was enhanced by 70% in comparison with the non-laminated matrix (115 gf/$\textrm{mm}^2$) and the strength-directionality due to fiber-orientation also could be removed. The strength of matrixes laminated by triple-casting was higher than that of the double-cast matrix, but triple-cast matrix showed the directionality with the casting direction, and furthermore its porosity was less than 50%. Although the strength of matrixes laminated by double-casting (195 gf/$\textrm{mm}^2$) is slightly less than that of matrixes laminated by hot-pressing (212 gf/$\textrm{mm}^2$), the double-casting method was evaluated to be more efficient laminating process in MCFC matrix processing.

  • In this work, adhesive tapes were prepared for the dicing process in semiconductor manufacturing. Compounds with different numbers of photoreactive groups (f = 1 to 3) were synthesized and incorporated into acrylic copolymers to formulate UV-curable acrylic adhesives. Structural confirmation of the synthesized photoreactive compounds (f = 2 or 3) was performed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The introduction of the photoreactive compounds into the acrylic adhesive was accomplished by urethane reactions, and the successful synthesis of the UV-curable acrylic adhesive was verified by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) measurements. To evaluate the performance of the adhesive, the peel strength was evaluated before and after UV irradiation using a silicon wafer as a substrate. The adhesive exhibited high peel strength (~2000 gf/25 mm) before UV exposure, which was significantly reduced (~5 gf/25 mm) after UV exposure. Interestingly, the adhesive containing multifunctional photoreactive compounds showed the most significant reduction in peel strength. In addition, surface residue measurements by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) showed minimal surface residue (~0.2%) after UV exposure. Overall, these results contribute to the understanding of the behavior of UV-curable acrylic adhesives and pave the way for potential applications in semiconductor manufacturing processes.

  • A hybrid post and beam shear wall system with structural insulation panel (SIP) infill was developed as a part of a green home 'Han-green' project through post and beam construction for contemporary life style. This project is on-going at the Korea Forest Research Institute to develop a new building system which improves Korean traditional wet-type building system and stimulates industrialized wood construction practice with pre-cut system. Compared to the traditional wet-type infill wall components, the hybrid wall system has benefits, such as, higher structural capacity, better thermal insulation performance, and shorter construction term due to the dry-type construction. To build up the hybrid wall system, in previous, SIP infill wall components can be manufactured at factory, and then inserted and nailed with helically threaded nails into the post and beam members at site. Shear performance of the hybrid wall system was evaluated through horizontal shear tests. The SIP hybrid wall system showed higher maximum shear strength, initial stiffness, ductility, yield strength, specified strength, and the specified allowable strength than those of post and beam with light-frame wall system. In addition to this, the hybrid wall system can provide speedy construction and structural and functional advantages including energy efficiency in the building system.

  • Environmental problems caused by extensive use of polymeric materials arise mainly due to lack of landfill space and depletion of finite natural resources of fossil raw materials like petroleum or natural gas. The substitution of synthetic petroleum-based resins with natural biodegradable resins appears to be one appropriate measure to remedy the above-mentioned situation. This study presents the development of a composite that uses environmentally degradable starch-based resin as matrix and natural mineral basalt fibres as reinforcement, and investigates the fibre's and the composite's mechanical properties. The tensile strength of single basalt fibres was verified by means of single fibre tensile tests and statistically investigated by means of a Weibull analysis. Prepreg sheets were manufactured by means of a modified doctor blade system and hot power press. The sheets were used to manufacture specimens with fibre volume contents ranging from 33% to 61%. Specimens were tested for tensile strength, flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength. Composites manufactured during this study exhibited tensile and flexural strength of up to 517 MPa and 157 MPa, respectively.

  • There has recently been a great deal of research into the appropriate building materials for eco-friendly construction. In the field of earth architecture, there have been walls made of pure earth or with rammed earth including a small amount of cement. The purpose of the study is to investigate the possibility increasing compressive strength through a more eco-friendly composition by using Hwangtoh binder rather than cement to increase the strength performance of rammed earth. It was found that the more the ratio of binder was increased, the more the strength was increased, but enhancement did not increase noticeably in the lower part that did not compact completely, and proper height to pour earth is 200 mm. When stone dust was added, compressive strength was lower than when adding fine aggregate and coarse aggregate, but a finer surface texture was provided.

  • Limestone slag cement is a green and sustainable building material with huge market potential. However, its shortcoming of low early compressive strength needs to be improved. A method of using aluminum sulfate to improve the early strength of ternary mixed mortar was proposed, and its effect and optimal dosage were tested. Macroscopic properties such as mechanical properties and surface electrical resistivity were measured at different dosages (0%, 1%, 2%, 3%). The microstructure and products of the mixtures were tested in detail, including by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction. The results show aluminum sulfate enhances mechanical properties and significantly increases surface electrical resistivity. The 1% and 2% doses had no adverse effects on the 28-day mechanical properties, while the 3% dose reduced the 28-day strength. Considering the changes in mechanical properties and surface electrical resistivity, 1% aluminum sulfate is the optimal dosage.

  • Formaldehyde emissions from the construct was harmful to human. Diatomite, bentonite and zeolite were used as porous materials for fabricating panels. Formaldehyde adsorption and physical characteristics of porous materials were investigated and hydrothermal method was applied to fabricate panels. Formaldehyde adsorption contents of panels with porous materials were higher than that of panel without porous materials. The panels with Cheolwon diatomite and Pohang zeolite showed excellent characteristics of Formaldehyde adsorption. These characteristics were caused by higher surface area and pore volume of porous materials. Formaldehyde adsorption contents were influenced by surface area and pore volume of panels. Correlation coefficient between surface area and Formaldehyde adsorption content of panels was 0.87. The panels with porous materials had higher strength than that without porous materials because of bridging role particles.

  • A high-order potential-based panel method based on Green's theorem, with piecewise-linear dipole strength on triangular panels, is formulated for the analysis of potential flow around a three-dimensional wing. Previous low-order panel methods adopt square panels with piecewise-constant dipole strength, which results in inherent errors. Square panels can not represent a high curvature lifting body, such as propellers, since the four vertices of the square panel do not locate at the same flat plane. Moreover the piecewise-constant dipole strength induces inevitable errors due to the steps in dipole strength between adjacent panels. In this paper a high-order panel method is formulated to improve accuracy by adopting a piecewise linear dipole strength on triangular panels. Firstly, the square panels are replaced by triangular panels in order to increase the geometric accuracy in representing the shape of the object with large curvature. Next, the step difference of the dipole strength between adjacent panels is removed by adopting piecewise-linear dipole strength on the triangular panels. The calculated results by the present method is compared with analytical ones for simple non-lifting geometries, such as ellipsoid. The results for an elliptic wing with zero thickness at finite angle of attack are compared with Jordan's results. The comparison shows reasonable agrements for the both lifting and non-lifting bodies.

  • As Gangwon-do Province needs an environmental-friendly alternative tourism according to low carbon green growth, this study analyzes specialized fields in green health industry, selects seven specialized fields in green health industry that is fit to Gangwon-do Province, and suggests a development strategy by conducting recognition surveys on preference and impotence of the specialized fields. Surveys and interviews are conducted of 106 students at Green Health Industry Education Center which is operating by Kwandong University and 84 persons who work at medical institutions and tourism related companies in Ganwondo. The surveys and interviews were completed from November 5 to November 19 in 2010, determined factors through a factor analysis when they have many questions, and analyzed by using SPSS 14.0. Out of the seven specialized fields, rest & recuperation field is highly recognized. In order to have competitive edge compared to other self-governing provinces, Ganwon-do Province should prioritize rest and recuperation field. A healthcare program in the green health industry specific to Ganwon-do Province includes hot springs and spa programs as a priority. Gangwon-do's hot springs are deemed to be competitive resources as global medical tourists prefer spa and sauna healthcare programs, while the province promotes its spring resources and builds medical tourism infrastructures. Gangwon-do Province can promote a medical tourism industry that is well suitable for the strength and characteristics of the province. It might pursue oriental medicine therapy tourism, which is related to a recuperating medical service that uses both oriental and western medicine. It can also run such programs as forest bathing (oxygen road), spring and spa, and sea water treatment, which are the specialized fields in green health industry with respect to recreation and healthcare.

  • Alumina powders were dispersed using crosslinkable organic molecules by electrosteric stabilization and then consolidated by crosslinking of organic molecules. The effect of processing variables such as the physicochemical properties of both solvent media and organic molecules, the proportions of mixed organic media, etc. were studied. FT-IR was used todeduce the mechanism of organic molecules adsorption on the alumina particle surfaces. The adsorption characteristics and the electrokinetic behavior of alumina suspensions were correlated with the stability of particle in alumina suspension using rheological measurements. The green body of alumina consolidated by the chemical crosslinking of the adsorbed organic molecules after the alumina suspension had been stabilized was tough enough for green machining and the sintered alumina fabricated by this proposed process also showed a high bending strength and a homogeneous microstructure.
