Effect of Heat Treatment on the Lipophillic Pigments of Fresh Green Tea Liquor

  • Changes in lipophillic pigments concentration and its relation to color of fresh green tea liquor during heat treatment were studied. The results showed liquor greenness decreased markedly with extension of incubation time at $55^{\circ}C$, while the brightness and yellowness changed a little. Significant increase in 'a' and 'b' values of tea liquor was observed at $95^{\circ}C$. Color change of liquor at $55^{\circ}C$ was accompanied by a decrease in the level of chlorophylls, lutein and neoxanthin, and an increase in the pheophytins and ${\beta}-carotene$ levels. However, all pigments except ${\beta}-carotene$ decreased with time extension at $95^{\circ}C$. Significant correlation was found between pigments and color difference index. The browning of fresh green tea liquor was attributed to vicissitudes of lipophillic pigments during heat treatment, especially to the change of chlorophylls/pheophytins ratio. Result also showed addition of $Zn^{2+}$ at 1.6 ${\mu}mol/L$ could partially alleviate the decrease in greenness during heat treatment.

A Comparative Study on Green Liquor Pre-Pulping Extraction of Mixed Hardwood Chips (혼합 하드우드 칩으로부터 녹액(Green Liqour)선-펄핑추출 공정에 관한 연구)

  • Mixed hardwood chips were pre-pulping extracted with green liquor prior to kraft pulping in order to recover hemicelluloses for use as biofuels. This green liquor solution containing mainly sodium sulfide and sodium carbonate was applied at different alkali charges (expressed as $Na_2O$) of 0, 1, 3, and 5% on dry wood weight. The extractions were performed at $160^{\circ}C$ for residence times ranging from about 1-2 h to determine the effect of extraction severity on composition of the pre-pulping extract. The severity of hemicellulose extraction time and green liquor charge controls the concentration of acetic acid and monosaccharide sugars available for downstream processing, the accumulation of degradation products such as organic acids and furans in the extract. As the alkali charge was increased, the amount of acetate side chains on the hemicelluloses and the dissolved lignin in the extract increased but the carbohydrate and sugars in the extract decreased appreciably. Hot water extraction (0% alkali addition) released the greatest amount of carbohydrates, up to 29.80 g/L measured as component sugars, but resulted in the greatest decrease in pulp yield. Meanwhile, pre-pulping extraction with 3% green liquor increased the pulp yield while greatly reducing the component sugars to 7.08 g/L. Fundamental data obtained in this study will allow selection of optimum hemicellulose extraction conditions for integrating the extraction operation into the Kraft pulping process.

  • This study developed the black liquor evaporation process models using the multiple-effect-evaporator according to the number of effects to predict steam consumption. The developed models were divided into the black liquor preheating and evaporation processes, and a virtual reboiler was added to predict steam consumption. In simulation results, the steam consumption in the double-effect-evaporator was decreased by 48.9 %, and as the number of effects increased, the steam consumption was decreased. Finally, the steam consumption in the octuple-effect-evaporator was decreased by 61.2 %. Also, this study suggests a strategy for deriving the optimal number of effects in the process by analyzing the latent heat recovered from the saturated vapor produced in the multiple-effect-evaporator and the amount of saturated vapor produced by each effect.

Dyeability and mechanical characteristics of Air-Flow Dyeing Machines (에어-플로우 염색기의 염색성능과 역학특성)

  • The air-flow dyeing machine is a new type of dyeing machine. Which is an energy saving type to be able to dye the fabrics with the lowest liquor ratio and in shorter time. This machine is operated with an aerodynamic system rather than a hyd raulic system for traditional jet or overflow dyeing. An air-flow dyeing machine(Green-flow) by the use of aerodynamic technology was developed and compared with the Luft-roto machine made by Thies Company, Germany, in this study. Three samples were dyed with both machines under the same dyeing conditions and color fastness, dyeing levelness, drapability, and mechanical properties of these samples were compared. The results were as follows; Both machines have almost the same dyeability. The dyeability was good at liquor ratio of 1: 3.5 and the speed of 450yds/min. The order for drapability was Crepe de Chine > Cool Peach > Charmeuse. Except for the color fastness of sublimation being below class 4, most color fastness of samples dyed with Green-flow m/c were above class 4. The maximum speed was 510yds/min. for Crepe de Chine and the standard deviation of K/S value was lower for Charmeuse and Cool Peach when employed on the "Green-flow" machine and lower for Crepe de Chine when employed on the Luft-roto machine. Comparing with dyeing of the Green-flow machine and that of the Luft-roto machine, the RT of the Charmeuse was found to be higher with the Green-flow machine and thus the sample had an improved wrinkle recovery. LT and WT of Cool Peach were higher, and shear properties(G, 2HG, 2HGS) of Crepe de Chine were higher, both turning out as suitable for clothing. clothing.

  • Coffee extract dyeing on silk fabric using various mordanting agents at different mordanting condition was studied in our previous research. Coffee extract dyeing can exert beautiful colors and have several advantages over the conventional natural dyeing. Since most of natural dyes are expensive for mass production, strongly season and source dependent, and hard to store, and therefore, coffee waste was used as natural dye to create beautiful colors in this study. Coffee waste is inexpensive and easy to store, and provide a comparatively regular quality regardless of season and source. The effects of dyeing condition such as dyeing temperature, dyeing time, and liquor ratio on dyeing characteristics of silk fabrics were investigated. Coffee extract dyed silk showed brilliant colors, and the colors were different with the kind of mordant. Cu, Sn, and Al mordanted silks showed golden yellow with subtle change of hue and value, while Fe mordanted silk showed a brownish green color upon coffee extract dyeing. As the dyeing temperature increased, the dyeability generally increased in all mordanted silk fabrics except Fe mordanted silk until $45^{\circ}C$. The dyeing temperature did not affect the dyeability of Fe mordanted silk fabric. As the liquor ratio increased, the dyeability showed a gradual increase in all mordanted silk except Cu mordanted silk. Cu mordanted silk fabric showed an abrupt increase in dyeability at liquor ratio1:150. The dyeing time effect can be separated into 2 stages. During the initial half an hour, the dyeability did not change significantly, and then, increased after 45 min. dyeing time duration. A further increase in dyeing time after 45 min. did not affect the dyeing efficiency in all mordanted silk fabrics except the Cu mordanted.

  • The sludge, a waste of brewery industries, was examined for potentials as a natural organic fertilizer (or soil conditioner) for lawn. Trial products were measured for changes of physical, chemical properties in laboratory and seed germination and seedling growth in green house were also tested. The results are as the following:1The sludge from distilled liquor brewery contained high quantity of organic matter which had proper physical and chemical properties for lawn fertilizer (natural organic fertilizer, soil conditioner, top-dressing mix) . It showed good characteristics in handling and capabilities to be developed as commercial products for golf courses. 2.Sludge from beer company needs proper treatment to improve physical properties for futher degradiation. It is because aggregation of the sludge particles prevented microbial activities and changing to soluble form. 3.Green carbon can be used as carbon source for organic fertilizer production using brewery sludge, but it should not contain wood extract which inhibit seed germination and seedling growth.

Optimization of Acetic Acid Recovery Using Tri-n-alkylphosphine Oxide from Prepulping Extract of Hemicellulose by Response Surface Methodology

  • A single process using hot water (0% green liquor) and green liquor (GL) was investigated for pre-pulping extraction on two types of raw material. The GL was applied at different alkali charges of 0-5% on a dry wood weight basis. The extractions were performed at an H-factor 900 at $180^{\circ}C$. The 0% and 3% GL extraction detected acetic acid (AA) at 10.02 and $9.94g/{\ell}$, extracts derived from hardwood, 2.46 and $3.76g/{\ell}$, extracts derived from softwood, respectively. The single liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) was studied using tri-n-alkylphosphine oxide (TAPO). Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed as an efficient approach for predictive model building and optimization of AA recovery conditions. The extraction of AA was evaluated with a three-level factorial design. Three independent variables, pH (0.5-3.5), temperature ($25-65^{\circ}C$), and residence time (24-48 min) were investigated. Applying the RSM models obtained, the optimal conditions selected of extracts derived from hard- and softwood with a 3% GL were approximately pH 1.4, $26.6^{\circ}C$, 43.8 min and approximately pH 0.7, $25.2^{\circ}C$, 24.6 min, respectively. The predicted and experimental values of AA recovery yield were similar whilst sugar retention was 100%.

Xylanase Production by Mixed Culture Using Crude Hemicellulose from Rice Straw Black Liquor and Peat Moss as an Inert Support

  • Black liquor (BL) is a by-product of rice straw pulping process. It is a low costs raw material for production value-adding proteins and enzymes, which has been paid more and more attention to reduce its environmental pollution. Mixed cultures of micelial fungi, Trichoderma reesei Northern Regional Research Laboratory (NRRL)11236, Trichoderma reesei NRRL 6165 and Aspergillus niger strains NRC 5A, NRC 7A, and NRC 9A were evaluated for their ability to produce xylanase using crude hemicellulose (CHC) prepared from BL and peat moss as an inert support under solid state fermentation (SSF). The most potent strains, A. niger NRC 9A (818.26 U/g CHC) and T. reesei NRRL 6165 ($100.9{\pm}57.14$ U/g CHC), were used in a mixed culture to enhance xylanase production by co-culturing under SSF. In the mixed culture, xylanase production ($1070.52{\pm}12.57$ U/g CHC) was nearly1.3 and 10.6-fold increases over the activities attained in their monocultures, A. niger NRC 9A and T. reesei NRRL 6165, respectively. Optimization of the culture parameters of the mixed culture SSF process, concentration of ammonium sulfate and corn steep liquor, CHC/peat moss ratio, inoculum size and ratios of the two strains, initial pH value, initial moisture content and incubation time, exhibited a significant increase ($2414.98{\pm}84.02$ U/g CHC) in xylanase production than before optimization.

Potential of Sarson Saag Waste-a Cannery Waste as Ruminant Feed

  • The nutritional worth of Sarson Saag Waste (SSW), a cannery waste, was assessed in comparison with conventional complete diet as a total mixed ration (TMR), and a conventional green fodder, Avena sativa. Each diet was offered ad libitum, supplemented with mineral mixture and common salt, to 4 male murrah buffaloes. The control TMR was made iso-nitrogenous to SSW. Simultaneously, each diet was offered to 3 rumen fistulated male buffaloes for assessing the biochemical changes in the rumen. The nutrient digestibility of unconventional SSW was comparable to that of conventional green fodder-A. sativa but significantly (p<0.05) higher than that of control TMR. The tri-chloro acetic acid (TCA) precipitable-N in the strained rumen liquor of animals fed SSW was considerably higher than that of animals fed A.sativa. The urinary excretion of total purine derivatives was comparable in animals fed SSW and conventional green fodder but significantly (p<0.05) higher than those fed conventional control TMR. The significantly (p<0.05) lower purine nitrogen index (PNI) in animals fed control TMR resulted in significantly (p<0.05) lower microbial protein synthesis than that in animals fed SSW and conventional green fodder. The N-excretion as per cent of nitrogen intake was significantly (p<0.05) lower in animals fed SSW as compared to either of the conventional feeds tested, resulting in significantly (p<0.05) higher Nretention and apparent biological value. SSW supplemented with mineral mixture could serve as an excellent source of nutrients for ruminants.

A Study on Air-flow Dyeing Machines ―A Comparision of Characteristics of the Polyester F fabrics Dyed with Green-flow Dyeing M/C and Luft-roto Dyeing M/C― (에어―플로우 염색기에 관한 연구(I) ―그린 플로우와 루프트―로토 염색기의 폴리에스테르 염색결과 비교―)

  • A new dyeing M/C, called Green-flow was developed in this study. A new M/C was applied to mixed air flow method combined aerodynamic technology to fabric speed power. The polyester fabric was dyed of beige color with a new M/C and Luft-roto dyeing M/C made by Thies Company(German) with the same dyeing condition (liquor ratio=1 : 3.5, Fabric speed = 450yds/min.) for comparision. The results showed that the color fastness to dye and drapability of the fabrics dyed with both M/C were almost the same and the levelness and T.H.V of the fabrics dyed with Greenflow were better than those dyed with Luft-roto M/C. In addition, it is found that the fabric speed of 502yds/min was a suitable for both M/C.
