  • Supersonic microjets acquire considerable research interest from a fundamental fluid dynamics perspective, in part because the combination of highly compressible flow at low-to-moderate Reynolds number is not very common, and in part due to the complex nature of the flow itself. In addition, microjets have a great variety engineering applications such as micro-propulsion, MEMS (Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems) components, microjet actuators and fine particle deposition and removal. Numerical simulations have been carried out at moderate nozzle pressure ratios and for different nozzle exit diameters to investigate and to understand in-depth of aerodynamic characteristics of supersonic microjets.

  • High-speed machining is one of the most effective technologies to improve productivity. Because of the high speed and high feed rate, high-speed machining can give great advantages for the machining of dies and molds. This paper describes on the improvement of machining accuracy in high-speed machining. Depth of cut and feed rate are control factors. The effect of the control factors on machining accuracy is investigated using two-way factorial design.

  • In the case of subsea tunnels, hydro-mechanical coupled analysis is necessary for an exact design and construction. The consideration of the overstretched ground condition is also required because they are usually located at the great depth unlike the usual tunnels. Many researches have been performed on the estimation of relaxed rock mass height. However, there have been no researches on the estimation of relaxed rock mass height under overstretched ground conditions. In this study, therefore, hydro-mechanical coupled analyses were performed under the overstressed ground conditions and the relaxed rock mass heights were estimated based on the contour of the local safety factor around a tunnel.

  • The estimation of soil stabilization is of great importance concerning the construction of structures on weak soil. A typical model of soil stabilization is considered as replacement, which is based on ground at failure due to direct loading on weak soil. The calculation of the line of predicting settlement was carried out using RPL and DIKE programs. The DIKE program is showing a tendency to excel totally about this embankment of the seadike. Hereafter, This program will be contributed widely to the construction of offshore structures on weak soil.

  • A large floating structure is attracting great attention in recent years from the view of ocean space utilization. Its huge scale in the horizontal directions compared with the wavelength and relatively shallow depth make this type of floating structure flexible and its wave-induced motion be characterized by the elastic deformation. In this paper, a boundary integral equation method is proposed to predict the wave-induced dynamic response mat-like floating offshore structure. The structure is modeled as an elastic plate and its elastic deformation is expressed as a superposition of free-vibration modes in air. This makes it straightforward to expand the well-established boundary integral technique for rigid floating bodies to include the hydroelastic effects. In order to validate the theoretical analysis, we compare with the experimental result of reduced model test. Satisfactory agreement is found between theory and experiment.

  • Seasonal changes of abundance of the main phytoplankton groups of species (diatoms, dinoflagellates, chrysophytes, small flagellates and cryptophytes) and a set of environmental parameters were investigated in coastal and pre-estuarine waters of Peter the Great Bay (East/Japan Sea) in May-October of 1998 and 1999. Three periods of mass development were revealed: spring, summer and autumn blooms, with successive change of species. The conditions favourable for each group of species were determined. Driving mechanisms of the succession include nutrients transport through seasonal pycnocline by turbulent mixing, terrestrial nutrients supply by monsoon floods, nutrients supply by upwellings, and light control by the thickness of upper mixed layer. Summer succession could be explained by a simple SST-MLD diagram similar to Pingree S-kh diagram with sea surface temperature as indicator of stratification (S) and mixed layer depth as indicator of light availability (kh).

  • The problem of temperature control for rapid thermal processing (RTP) in semiconductor manufacturing is discussed in this paper. Among sub=micron technologies for VLSI devices, reducing the junction depth of doped region is of great importance. This paper investigates existing methods for manufacturing wafers, focusing on the RPT which is considered to be good for formation of shallow junctions and performs the wafer fabrication operation in a single chamber of annealing, oxidation, chemical vapor deposition, etc., within a few minutes. In RTP for semiconductor manufacturing, accurate and uniform control of the wafer temperature is essential. In this paper, a robustr controller is designed using a recently developed optimization technique. The controller designed is then tested via computer simulation and compared with the other results.

  • High-speed machining is one of the most effective technology to enhance productivity especially for hardened die material. High-speed machining can give great advantages for machining of dies and molds. But selection of machining condition is very difficult because of complicated machining mechanism. This paper presents the selection of machining condition in high-speed machining of STD11. Depth of cut, feed rate and spindle revolution are control factors. The effect of the control factors on surface roughness and machining error in Z-direction is discussed to improve machining accuracy.
