  • Modern distance sensing methods employ various measurement principles, including triangulation, time-of-flight, confocal, interferometric and frequency comb. Among them, the triangulation method, with a laser light source and an image sensor, is widely used in low-cost applications. We developed an omnidirectional two-dimensional (2D) distance sensor based on the triangulation principle for indoor floor mapping applications. The sensor has a range of 150-1500 mm with a relative resolution better than 4% over the range and 1% at 1 meter distance. It rotationally scans a compact one-dimensional (1D) distance sensor, composed of a near infrared (NIR) laser diode, a folding mirror, an imaging lens, and an image detector. We designed the sensor layout and configuration to satisfy the required measurement range and resolution, selecting easily available components in a special effort to reduce cost. We built a prototype and tested it with seven representative indoor wall specimens (white wallpaper, gray wallpaper, black wallpaper, furniture wood, black leather, brown leather, and white plastic) in a typical indoor illuminated condition, 200 lux, on a floor under ceiling mounted fluorescent lamps. We confirmed the proposed sensor provided reliable distance reading of all the specimens over the required measurement range (150-1500 mm) with a measurement resolution of 4% overall and 1% at 1 meter, regardless of illumination conditions.

  • The exact general bit error rate (TIER) expression of M-ary square quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) for arbitrary M has not been derived so far. In this paper, a generalized closed-form expression for the BER performance of M-ary square QAM with Gray code bit mapping is derived and analyzed in the presence of additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The derivation is based on the consistency of the format in signal constellation o[ Gray coding and it has been derived from the results for M-16, 64, and 256.

  • Objective: To localize the neuroanatomical substrate of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and to investigate the neuroanatomical locational relationship between RBD and α-synucleinopathy neurodegenerative diseases. Materials and Methods: Using a systematic PubMed search, we identified 19 patients with lesions in different brain regions that caused RBD. First, lesion network mapping was applied to confirm whether the lesion locations causing RBD corresponded to a common brain network. Second, the literature-based RBD lesion network map was validated using neuroimaging findings and locations of brain pathologies at post-mortem in patients with idiopathic RBD (iRBD) who were identified by independent systematic literature search using PubMed. Finally, we assessed the locational relationship between the sites of pathological alterations at the preclinical stage in α-synucleinopathy neurodegenerative diseases and the brain network for RBD. Results: The lesion network mapping showed lesions causing RBD to be localized to a common brain network defined by connectivity to the pons (including the locus coeruleus, dorsal raphe nucleus, central superior nucleus, and ventrolateral periaqueductal gray), regardless of the lesion location. The positive regions in the pons were replicated by the neuroimaging findings in an independent group of patients with iRBD and it coincided with the reported pathological alterations at post-mortem in patients with iRBD. Furthermore, all brain pathological sites at preclinical stages (Braak stages 1-2) in Parkinson's disease (PD) and at brainstem Lewy body disease in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) were involved in the brain network identified for RBD. Conclusion: The brain network defined by connectivity to positive pons regions might be the regulatory network loop inducing RBD in humans. In addition, our results suggested that the underlying cause of high phenoconversion rate from iRBD to neurodegenerative α-synucleinopathy might be pathological changes in the preclinical stage of α-synucleinopathy located at the regulatory network loop of RBD.

  • This study aimed at the identification of the black coating materials on the pottery surface and manufacturing technique of black burnished pottery excavated from the Pungnaptoseong, Seoul, which is estimated to be royal fortress of Beakje. According to observation of black coated surface and raw materials, potteries can be divided into two groups. The first group potteries have black inner and black surface with well-selected particles. Second group potteries are black in surface only with unevenly selected particles. Each group seems to represent different manufacturing technique in clay selection, color development timing and method. The black burnished pottery contains high values of CaO, $P_2O_5$, L.O.I. and lower content of $Fe_2O_3$ compared with gray pottery excavated from the same site, which indicates plant ashes were used for coloring the surface of pottery in black. According to the result of SEM-EDS mapping of black burnished pottery, carbon was concentrated on pottery surface, while iron was concentrated on the surface of the gray pottery. Based on XRD analysis, firing temperature of the black burnished potteries were fired low temperature range at 700 to $900^{\circ}C$, and that of the gray potteries ranged from $900^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • The CMS(color management system) software was to enable consistent color reproduction from original to reproduction. The CMS was to create RGB monitor and printer characterization profiles and then use the profiles for device independent color transformation. The implemented CMM(color management module) used the CIELAB color space for the profile connection. Various monitor characterization model was evaluated for proper color transformation. To construct output device profile, SLI(sequential linear interpolation) method was used for the color conversion from CMYK device color to device independent CIELAB color space and tetrahedral interpolation method was used for backward transformation. UCR(under color removal) based black generation algorithm was used to construct CIELAB to CMYK LUT(lookup table). When transforming the CIE Lab colour space to CMYK, it was possible to involve the gray revision method regularized in the brightness into colour transformation process and optimize the colour transformation by black generation method based on UCR technique. For soft copy colour proofing, evaluating several monitor specialism methods showed that LUT algorithm was useful. And it was possible to simplify colour gamut mapping by constructing both the look-up table and the colour gamut mapping algorithm to a reference table.

  • In this paper, we propose a forward vehicle detection algorithm using column detection and bird's-eye view mapping based on stereo vision. The algorithm can detect forward vehicles robustly in real complex traffic situations. The algorithm consists of the three steps, namely road feature-based column detection, bird's-eye view mapping-based obstacle segmentation, obstacle area remerging and vehicle verification. First, we extract a road feature using maximum frequent values in v-disparity map. And we perform a column detection using the road feature as a new criterion. The road feature is more appropriate criterion than the median value because it is not affected by a road traffic situation, for example the changing of obstacle size or the number of obstacles. But there are still multiple obstacles in the obstacle areas. Thus, we perform a bird's-eye view mapping-based obstacle segmentation to divide obstacle accurately. We can segment obstacle easily because a bird's-eye view mapping can represent the position of obstacle on planar plane using depth map and camera information. Additionally, we perform obstacle area remerging processing because a segmented obstacle area may be same obstacle. Finally, we verify the obstacles whether those are vehicles or not using a depth map and gray image. We conduct experiments to prove the vehicle detection performance by applying our algorithm to real complex traffic situations.

  • This paper proposes a method for detecting the direction indicator shown in the road surface efficiently from the black box system installed on the vehicle. In the proposed method, the direction indicators are detected by inverse perspective mapping(IPM) and bag of visual features(BOF)-based NN classifier. In order to apply the proposed method to real-time environments, the candidated regions of direction indicator in an image only performs IPM, and BOF-based NN is used for the classification of feature information from direction indicators. The results of applying the proposed method to the road surface direction indicators detection and recognition, the detection accuracy was presented at least about 89%, and the method presents a relatively high detection rate in the various road conditions. Thus it can be seen that the proposed method is applied to safe driving support systems available.

  • A TC-16ADPSK scheme for transmitting different kinds of information simultaneously is proposed in this paper. The scheme is designed for simultaneously transmitting two kinds of Information on one channel. In signal mapping, a data of two kinds of information is used to phase modulation on Star-16APSK constellation and the other to amplitude modulation. In detection, each data independently recovers from mixing signal on each detector Therefore, we can transmit two kinds of Information on one channel can be transmitted efficiently. BER performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed on AWGN channel and Rayleigh fading channels on a computer with Matlab communication toolbox. On same SNR, the Gray code mapping has more 0.5-1.5dB coding gains than Ungerboeck's code mapping gains.

  • Objectives: Aluminum step wedge (ASW) equivalent radiodensity (eRD) has been used to quantify restorative material's radiodensity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of image acquisition control (IAC) of a digital X-ray system on the radiodensity quantification under different exposure time settings. Materials and Methods: Three 1-mm thick restorative material samples with various opacities were prepared. Samples were radiographed alongside an ASW using one of three digital radiographic modes (linear mapping (L), nonlinear mapping (N), and nonlinear mapping and automatic exposure control activated (E)) under 3 exposure time settings (underexposure, normal-exposure, and overexposure). The ASW eRD of restorative materials, attenuation coefficients and contrasts of ASW, and the correlation coefficient of linear relationship between logarithms of gray-scale value and thicknesses of ASW were compared under 9 conditions. Results: The ASW eRD measurements of restorative materials by three digital radiographic modes were statistically different (p = 0.049) but clinically similar. The relationship between logarithms of background corrected grey scale value and thickness of ASW was highly linear but attenuation coefficients and contrasts varied significantly among 3 radiographic modes. Varying exposure times did not affect ASW eRD significantly. Conclusions: Even though different digital radiographic modes induced large variation on attenuation of coefficient and contrast of ASW, E mode improved diagnostic quality of the image significantly under the underexposure condition by improving contrasts, while maintaining ASW eRDs of restorative materials similar. Under the condition of this study, underexposure time may be acceptable clinically with digital X-ray system using automatic gain control that reduces radiation exposure for patient.

  • A "finite volume method" is proposed to predict heat transport in a spherical enclosure at micro/nanoscale with the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE). The gray version of the BTE with the relaxation time approximation has been applied. Pointing out similarity between radiative transfer equation (RTE) and BTE, the mapping process in RTE is adopted to treat the angular derivative term and linear algebraic discretization equation is derived by using the established method which is used in 2-D BTE in cartesian coordinates. The simulation results are compared to exact solution to RTE for various acoustic thicknesses and ratio of radii. The comparison shows that this method is logical and accurate, and it is possible to easily adopt various models in spherical BTE.
