  • Swelling of starch granules by water-sorption causes a progressive or sometimes abrupt change in sorption behavior as a result of structural alterations and the possible exposure of new sites with high affinity for water. It is thus of interest to examine the time-dependent change in the size or shape of the starch granules. Gravitational field-flow fractionation (GrFFF) utilizes the earth's gravity as the external field, and is useful for separation of micron-sized particles with larger particles eluting earlier than smaller ones. In this study, GrFFF was used to monitor the swelling of two starch granules, potato starch and sweet potato starch during contact time of 11-12 days at room temperature in water. Results from GrFFF were compared with those obtained from optical microscope (OM). For both starch granules, the mean sizes were increased with time spent in water.

  • This study was intended to develop a method for measuring the grain separating performance of threshers. The grain separating apparatus used for the experiment was designed and constructed, the function of which was to separate pneumatically mature and immature grain, chaff, straw, dust, and other impurities from the products of threshing. The apparatus has five material outlets where grains and impurities are fallen down by separation depending upon the specific gravity of the material white it moves above the outlets. The principle of design was to separate the mixture of mature grain, immature grain and chaff as distinct as possible, and to induce the mature grains onto the first outlet, the immature grains onto the second and the third, and the straw wastes onto the forth and the fifth outlets. The developed apparatus was tested to evaluate its separating performance with two rice varieties (Tongil and Mine-hikari) at different moisture levels and air velocities. The optimum conditions for operating the apparatus were found from experiment. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The degrees of separation, especially the amount of immature grain contained in the mature paddy, were dependent upon air speed delivered. The optimum air velocities for this apparatus for each levels of grain moisture contents were found from a series of experiments as follows; 14.7-15.3m/sec. for grain of 16 percent moisture content in wet basis, 15.3-16.0m/sec. for 20 percent, and 16.0-16.4m/sec for 24 percent. 2. Composition ratios determined based on the brine separating method was fairly well acted upon the developed apparatus, indicating its recollecting rate of the mature grains as 97.6 to 99.9 percent. The developed separatus acted similarly upon the two rice varieties which had different composition of immature paddy grain. In other words, the separating performance by the apparatus had a good correlation with the one by the brine separating method. 3. As immature grains were separated out unsatisfactory in these experiments than the brine separating method, further investigation may be needed to improve a separating performance of these materials. But the results obtained suggested a possibility of using the tester to replace the current hand separating method, ther eby enabling more consistent test results and also eliminating nearly all costly hand seperating operations.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the possibility of beneficiation of low grade iron ore. Iron ore A might be upgraded by the mineral liberation effect, while iron ore B was expected to be difficult to upgrade. However, the Fe contents of iron ore B were increased from 68% to 81% by the heat treatment process. Iron ore A was found to possibly enrich the Fe components through the physical separation process, such as magnetic separation, floatation and gravity concentration. In the case of iron ore B, it was possible to concentrate the Fe components through the heat treatment process.

  • Non-point source control system which had been designed only for oil-water separation in the fields of oil refinery and garage was upgraded in this research for the removal of runoff pollutants in impervious urban area. Pollutants including oil from driveway and bridge were eliminated by two types of pathway in the system. One is the coalescence mechanism that the oil droplets in the runoff come into contact with each other in the spiral buoyant media surface and form larger coalesced droplets of oil that are carried upstream to the oil layer. The other is the precipitation that solids in runoff were settled by gravity in the system. In this research, coalescing characteristics of oil and water separation were investigated through image analyses, and efficiencies of the non-point source control system were evaluated using dust in driveway and waste engine oil. Media made of high density and high molecular weight polyethylene was indeterminate helical shape and had sleek surface by analysing SEM photographs and BET. Surface area and specific gravity of media which were measured directly were 1,428 $mm^2$ and 45.3 $kg/m^3$ respectively. From the image analyses of the oil droplets photographs which were taken by using microscope, it was proved clearly that the coalescence was the main pathway in the removal of oil from the runoff. Finally, the performances of the non-point source control system filled up with the media were suspended solid $86.6\sim95.2%$, $COD_{Cr}$, $87.3\sim95.4%$, n-Hexane extractable materials $71.8\sim94.8%$ respectively.

  • Wind is one of the main forcing contributing the circulation of the East Sea. By using 1.5-layer and 2.5-layer reduced gravity models, circulation in the East Sea is simulated. The bifurcation of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC), the separation of East Korea Warm Current (EKWC) from the east coast of Korea, the Nearshore Branch of TWC, and the cyclonic gyres stretched from the East Korea Bay to the northern half of the East Sea are compared well with the schematic map. The features of the upper and the lower layer are very similar except for those of the central region. The Polar Front is the separating line of two different features. The main feature of northern part of the East Sea, north of the Polar Front is cyclonic gyres, which are composed of three cyclonic gyres in most seasons. North Korean Cold Current (NKCC) and Liman Cold Current (LCC) are the nearshore part of these cyclonic gyres. In the south of the Polar Front the current systems of both layers are anticyclonic in most seasons, except that those of the upper layer in winter and spring are not anticyclonic. Along the coast of Korea and Russia, the velocity structure is barotropic, while that of the central region is baroclinic. The effects due to the seasonal variations of wind stress and local Ekman suction/pumping are studied by imposing the domain with modified wind stress. which is spatial mean with temporal variations and temporal mean with spatial variations. It is found that the local Ekman suction/pumping due to wind stress curl is important to the formation of the cyclonic gyres in the western and the northwestern region of the East Sea.

  • To improve concrete tensile strength and bending strength, New plan that have more economical and simple manufacture process is groped. By an alternative plan, chemical pre-stressed concrete is presented. In this study, we analyzed the rheological properties of cement paste with the kind and replacement ratio of k-type CSA type expansive additives that is used mainly in domestic. and we suggested that the algorithm of a mixing plan in the chemical pre-stressed concrete and from this, we presented the basic report for the right mixing plan. From the results, Flow increased more or less according to use of expansive additives. This phenomenon was observed by increasing paste amount that shows as substitution for expansive additives that specific gravity is smaller than that of cement. As linear regression a result supposing paste that mix expansive additives by Bingham plastic fluid. The shear rate and shear stress expressed high interrelationship. therefore, flow analysis of quantitative was available. The plastic viscosity following to replacement ratio of expansive additives is no change almost, the yield value is decreased in proportion to the added amount of expansive additives. Through this experiment, we could evaluate rheological properties of cement paste using the expansive additives. Hereafter by an additional experiment, we must confirm stability assessment of material separation by using the aggregate with the kind and replacement ratio of expansive additives.

  • HRSG (Heat Recovery Steam Generator) is a boiler to recover heat from the exhaust gas of an engine and to generate steam for more power generation or process. For the HRSG, water-tube type boiler is commonly adopted to accommodate the working pressure or capacity requirement of the system. The water-tube type boiler has a steam drum to separate steam from the water-steam mixture supplied from the evaporator tube (riser). The drum should be sized properly to separate the steam by the gravity and auxiliary internals, such as a demister, which are installed to filter the steam. To size the steam drum and to estimate the filter efficiency of drum internals, the velocity distribution inside the drum needs to be identified. In the present study, a series of CFD has been conducted to find the velocity distributions inside steam drums for conventional HRSGs and water-tube type industrial boilers. The velocity distributions obtained from the simulation have been normalized and a correlation to predict them has been found. The correlation is applied to the steam drum design by determining a proper position of a demister to show proper separation performance.

  • A liquid chromatographic method, using matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) is developed for the extraction of residual furazolidone in chicken eggs. Blank or fortified egg samples (0.5 g) were blended with Octadecylsilyl (Bulk $C_{18}$, 40${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 18%. load, endcapped. 2 g) derivatized silica. After homogenization, $C_{18}$/egg and Na$_2$S $O_4$matrix were transferred to a column made of 10 ml glass syringe and filter paper and compressed 4.0∼4.5 ml volume. The column was washed with 8 ml of hexane and dried under $N_2$ gas. Furazolidone was eluted with acetonitrile (8 ml) under gravity. The eluate containing furazolidone was free from interfering compounds when analyzed by HPLC with UV detection (365 nm, photodiode array). Calibration curves were linear (r = 0.99985) and inter- (1.47%) and intra-assay (5.29%) variabilities for the concentration range examined (7.8∼497 ng/g of eggs, 20 ${mu}ell$ injection volume) were indicative of an acceptable methodology for the analysis of furazolidone. Average recovery of furazolidone added to egg was 96.2%. The limit of detection for the proposed method was 1 ng/g for furazolidone. The method using MSPD is proposed as an alternative assay to the classical method which involves the use of large volumes of a harmful solvent and requires a long tedious separation and clean-up processes prior to its determination.
