Placer gold deposits is mainly distributed in the Takaoi area. The alluvium is unconsolidated or semiconsolidated deposit consisting of gravel, sand, and soil beds in ascending order. They unconformably overlies the Carboniferous-Permian schist and Cretaceous granodiorite substratum. Based on detailed facies analysis, the alluvium can be interpreted as a typical fluvial deposits containing gravel and sand beds of channel-fill unit and soil deposit of floodplain. Gold grains are included mainly in the gravel bed and vein quartz is only contained gold among all kinds of gravels. These features indicates that the source rock of the gold grain is vein quartz and gold grains are separated from vein quartz during transport and abrasion. The reserves of gold in this area reach to at least 792 kg.
PURPOSES : In this research, the initiation and development of corrugation on a gravel road with certain wheel and boundary conditions were evaluated using a coupled discrete-element method (DEM) with multibody dynamics (MBD). METHODS : In this study, 665,534 particles with a 4-mm diameter were generated and compacted to build a circular roadbed track, with a depth and width of 42 mm and 50 mm, respectively. A single wheel with a 100-mm diameter, 40-mm width, and 0.157-kg mass was considered for the track. The single wheel was set to run slowly on the track with a speed of 2.5 rad/s so that the corrugation was gradually initiated and developed without losing contact between the wheel and the roadbed. Then, the shape of the track surface was monitored, and the movement of the particles in the roadbed was tracked at certain wheel-pass numbers to evaluate the overall corrugation initiation and development mechanism. RESULTS : Two types of corrugation, long wave-length and short wave-length, were observed in the circular track. It seems that the long wave-length corrugation was developed by the longitudinal movement of surface particles in the entire track, while the short wave-length corrugation was developed by shear deformation in a local section. Properties such as particle coefficients, track bulk density, and wheel mass, have significant effects on the initiation and development of long-wave corrugation. CONCLUSIONS : It was concluded that the coupled numerical method applied in this research could be effectively used to simulate the corrugation of a gravel road and to understand the mechanism that initiates and develops corrugation. To derive a comprehensive conclusion for the corrugation development under various conditions, the driver's acceleration and deceleration with various particle gradations and wheel-configuration models should be considered in the simulation.

Microbial activity of biofilm formed on the surface of gravels from intertidal zone was estimated using an aerobic respirometer system, and compared with that of suspended marine microorganisms contained in a near shore water. The maximum oxygen uptake rate of the suspended marine microorganisms was 0.15mg O$_2$/L/hr, indicating the potential of purification of polluted near shore water. For the gravels from the intertidal zone, the maximum uptake rate of oxygen was affected by the vertical positions, but their gross value was 0.77mg O$_2$/L/hr, which was around 5.1 times higher than the purification potential of polluted near shore water by the microorganisms contained in the near shore water. The nitrogen removed by the gravels from the intertidal zone and the marine microorganisms was about 1/20-1/39 times of the total consumption of oxygen, which was similar to that of the phosphate. The gravel intertidal zone contained lots of particulate organics, over than that in the near shore water, and this was confirmed from the large difference between total oxygen consumption and the removed soluble COD in the microbial activity test. This indicates that the gravel intertidal zone plays an important role in controlling the non-point source pollutants from land, as well as self-purification of polluted near shore water by trapping and degrading the particulate organics.

This thesis studied effect of zoning on seepage flow in concrete faced gravel-fill dam (CFGD) designed to have selected main rockfill or gravel-fill zone, Zone 3Bs with higher permeability to enhance the safety against accidental water infiltration into the dam. For this purpose, centrifuge model tests with two cases, with and without Zone 3Bs, were performed in order to investigate the necessity and the function of Zone 3Bs. Model dams were made by soil samples with modified coefficients of permeability and concrete faced slab was simulated with aluminum alloy. Water infiltration was simulated by rising water table over cracks on the facing. Behaviors of model dams were measured by LVDTs, strain gages, pore water pressures and cameras. Form the results of centrifuge tests, it was found out that the Zone 3Bs acts as a protection of main gravel-fill zone by inducing flow paths for infiltrated water into it as well as by draining off the infiltrated water out of the dam in a short time.

Gravels forming part of the base of flexible pavements experience abrasion and crushing as a result of static and dynamic loads. Abrasion takes place when the sharp corners of the particles of gravel are removed as a result of compressive and shear loads. As a result of abrasion, the particles change in shape. Crushing is caused by the fragmentation of the particles into a mixture of many small particles of varying sizes. In this study, the abrasion and crushing of gravels are evaluated experimentally and analytically. The laboratory component of this study involves gravels that were subjected to abrasion and dynamic compression tests. The evaluation of the abrasion and crushing experienced by the gravel was carried out using fractals. In this study, the fractal dimension concept from fractal theory is used to evaluate: (a) the changes in shape, and (b) the crushing (fragmentation) of the original particles of gravel. It was determined that the fractal dimension of the profile of the particles decreased as a result of abrasion. With respect to crushing, the fragmentation fractal dimension was found to increase with the degree of breakage of the gravel. To understand the influence of crushing on the permeability of the gravels, the hydraulic conductivity of the gravels was measured before and after crushing. The hydraulic conductivity of the gravels was found to decrease with an increase in their level of crushing. Also, changes in the angle of friction of the granular materials as a result of abrasion was calculated using the Krumbein's roundness chart. The angle of friction of the granular materials was found to decrease as a result of abrasion.
C.S.G is a material made by adding cement and water to rock-like material such as riverbed gravel or excavation muck that can be obtained easily near dam si. Recently, the use of C.S.G is gradually increasing as the construction material for dam, road, revement and so on. Commonly, the strength characteristics of C.S.G is affected by various influence factors such as grade, unit cement, age and water contents. In this study, a series of compaction test and unconfined compressive strength test were performed to investigate the relationship between a strength and influence factors such as three kinds of gradation, age, unit cement and water contents with riverbed gravel in Hwa Buk dam. The results show that strength Properties of C.S.G is variously affected by these influence factors. Especially, gradation and water contents are found to be very important factors fur determining the strength of C.S.G material. And, from the results of experimental study, the correlation equations between uncompressive strength and these factors are proposed.
The paper investigates the effect of two parameters - sand content (SC) and grain migration during shearing - on the mechanical properties of gravel-sand mixtures. Consolidated undrained (CU) triaxial tests were carried out on eight series of mixtures containing gravel (1<d<16 mm) and sand (0.1<d<1 mm). The prepared mixtures have sand contents of 0, 10, 15, 20, 40, 54, 94 and 100%, and a relative density of 60%. The transition sand content (TSC) is experimentally defined and marks the transition from gravel-driven to sand-driven behavior. For SC<TSC, the dry density of the mixture increases with SC. This induces an increase in undrained peak strength and dilative trend. The slope and position of the critical state line (CSL) are also deeply dependent on SC. At SC=TSC, the mixtures exhibit the largest dry density and yield the highest undrained peak strength and the largest dilative trend. During shearing, large internal migration of grains was observed at the TSC, causing heterogeneity in the sample. Analysis of the CSL deduced from the final points of the triaxial tests shows that, at the TSC, failure appears to correspond to the behavior of the coarsest fraction of the soil. This fraction is located in the upper part of the sample, where the sand particles had been eliminated by suffusion. On the other hand, in the more stable materials, the CSL is consistent with the bulk grain size distribution of the soil.
In this study, we analyzed the settlement characteristics of rockfill embankments mixed with soil by confirming the physical properties of soil materials mixed with silty materials and analyzing the compression characteristics of gravel materials according to the mixing ratio of soil materials. For this, we mixed silty materials into sandy soil to analyze the compression characteristics of soil materials, and we constructed a foundation by mixing various ratios of soil into rockfill materials with a particle distribution similar to that of river gravel, and conducted a one-dimensional compression experiment using a medium-sized chamber. As a result of the experiment, in the case of mixed soil materials, the Transition Fine Content (TFC) appeared in the range of 21~26% depending on the load condition, and in the case of rockfill materials mixed with soil, as the void filling ratio of soil in gravel samples increases, both total compression and creep compression decreases, but after a 50% mixing ratio, the settlement of amount increases again.

Background: Comparing with the several types of infrastructures, linear infrastructures are known to facilitate the spread of undesirable species in ecosystems. Recently, some new man-made habitats (e.g., gravel pads of the high-voltage towers, solid wastes and sewage habitats) were established along the Deltaic Mediterranean coast of Egypt as a result of the construction of the E-W coastal international highway. The current study evaluates the floristic composition associated with the pads of high-voltage towers that had been constructed for stabilizing the power line towers in the North Nile Delta. Plant cover was measured for 22 randomly stand. Results: Eighty-four species were recorded, of which 35 are perennials (41.6%), 2 biennials (2.3%) and 47 annuals (56.0%) belonging to 23 families. The largest families were Asteraceae (16 species), Poaceae (15 species), Chenopodiaceae (12 species), and Fabaceae (7 species). Ten aliens (10.7%) out of the 84 species were recorded. Therophytes have the highest percentage (58%), followed by hemicryptophytes (14%), chamaephytes (11%). Six vegetation groups were recognized in the study area after the application of two way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN), Arthrocnemum macrostachyum, Phragmites australis, and Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum have the highest presence percentage. Both of Salsola cyclophylla and Solanum villosum were recorded for the first time in North Nile Delta. Natural habitat had the highest α-diversity, but the lowest β-diversity (4.9, 15.4), while gravel pads had the reverse (2.7, 30.8). Some species which are native to the desert habitats (e.g., Rumex pictus, Salsola kali, and Carthamus tenuis) were able to invade the North Nile Delta. Conclusions: Habitat of gravel pads is an expressing form about the intense of disturbance in Deltaic Mediterranean coast of Egypt. More of efforts should be carried out to avoid more human disturbances that creating as ruderal habitats which open the gate to invasive species in the flora of North Nile Delta.
