Lasing modes of laser-diode-pumped fiber grating lasers are analyzed by coupled-mode theory. First, a power series solution of the coupled-mode equations is derived under the assumption of an exponentially-decreasing longitudinal modal gain profile for a laser-diode-pumped grating section, followed by determination of the transfer matrix for such a section. Based on these results, an eigenvalue equation for oscillation is then derived and solved numerically for the lasing modes of uniform and phase-shifted fiber grating lasers. Comparisons made with the uniform-gain results indicate that, surprisingly, the lasing mode characteristics are not as significantly altered as might be expected in most cases, even for a highly nonuniform gain profile. In the case of a phase-shifted grating, the phase-shift position appears to have a much greater impact on determining the threshold gain, the modal field distribution, and the front-to-back output power ratio.
There are various holographic recording materials, such as Dichromated Gelatin, Silver Halide, Thermoplastic, Photoresist. In this paper especially, we used Photoresist to make the phase holographic grating. Deep-groove diffractive grating formed in relatively thin holographic recording material is to express high diffraction efficiency. Phase holographic grating recorded In photoresist can be used very practical because it has the high diffraction efficiency, and it is possible to make a replication easily. So, it has the merit in recording the optical holographic grating than any other materials.
A frequency stable and tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) incorporating an optical phase shifter and a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG) is designed and analyzed. The frequency tunability of the OEO can be realized by using a tunable microwave photonic bandpass filter consisting of a PS-FBG, a phase modulator. The optical phase compensation loop is used to compensate for the phase variations of the RF signal from the OEO by adjusting an optical phase shifter. Simulation results demonstrate that the output RF signals of the OEO can be tuned in a frequency range of 118 MHz to 24.092 GHz. When the ambient temperature fluctuates within ±3.9 ℃, the frequency drifts of the output RF signals are less than 68 Hz, the side-mode suppression ratios are more than 69.39 dB, and the phase noise is less than -92.49 dBc/Hz at a 10 kHz offset frequency.

In this study, the theory and application of phase-shifting shadow moire topography is focused on the non-contact measurement of object surfaces for practical use in the field of production engineering. Shadow moire topography has been studied during last few decades in the area of the optical physics, and now its mathmatical theory has been established. Generally, in case of the classical shadow moire topography, the sensitivity is a few tenths of millimeter in best cases. Here we tried the application of phase-shifting method to the conventional shadow moire topography. But the reference grating and the deformed grating are mutually dependent because it is impossible to obtain uniform phase shifts on the whole Held. Therefore it is difficult to use a phase-shifting method in shadow moire topography. However, it was shown that constant phase-shifting was able to be measured by moving both the grating and light source. Finally we obtained a better result by using this procedure and applied the phase-shifting shadow moire to three dimensional object measurement.
We present a novel concept of a phase-shifting diffraction-grating interferometer, which is intended for the optical testing of concave mirrors with high precision. The interferometer is configured with a single reflective diffraction grating, which performs multiple functions of beam splitting, beam recombination, and phase shifting. The reference and test wave fronts are generated by means of reflective diffraction at the focal plane of a microscope objective with large numerical aperture, which allows testing fast mirrors with low f-numbers. The fiber-optic confocal design is adopted for the microscope objective to focus a converging beam on the diffractive grating, which greatly reduces the alignment error between the focusing optics and the diffraction grating. Translating the grating provides phase shifting, which allows measurement of the figure errors of the test mirror to nanometer accuracy.

The 3-D measurement using a sinusoidal grating pattern projection is very attractive because of its high measuring speed and high sensitivity. When a sinusoidal amplitude grating was projected on an object, the surface-height distribution of the object is translated into a phase distribution of the deformed grating image. The phase-acquisition algorithms are so sufficiently simple that high-resolution phase maps using a CCD camera can be generated in a short time. The PMP technique is discussed, and the analysis of the systematic errors, the calibration procedure designed to determined the optimal setting of the measurement parameters is illustrated. Results of measurements and calibrations on the measurement plane objects are described.
Polymeric optical waveguide devices with Bragg gratings have been investigated, for implementing tunable lasers and wavelength filters used in wavelength-division-multiplexed optical communication systems. Owing to the excellent thermo-optic effect of these polymers, wavelength tuning is possible over a wide range, which is difficult to achieve using other optical materials. In this study the phase-mask technology, which has advantages over the conventional interferometeric method, was introduced to facilitate the fabrication of Bragg gratings in polymeric optical waveguide devices. An optical setup capable of fabricating multiple Bragg gratings simultaneously on a 4-inch silicon wafer was constructed, using a 442-nm laser and phase mask. During fabrication, some of the diffracted light in the phase mask was totally reflected inside the mask, which affected the quality of the Bragg grating adversely, so experiments were conducted to solve this issue. To verify grating uniformity, two types of wavelength-filtering devices were fabricated using the phase-mask lithography, and their reflection and transmission spectra were measured. From the results, we confirmed that the phase-mask method provides good uniformity, and may be applied for mass production of polymer Bragg-grating waveguide devices.
The self-imaging effect or lensless imaging effect of a phase line grating is theoretically analyzed by using Fresnel diffraction theory, then experimentally investigated. The self-imaging distance $z_{T,p}$, that is the imaging distance being perfectly copied from the phase distribution of the phase grating to its intensity distribution with the magnification of 1X, can be uniquely defined as the (4n-3) $z_{T,a}$/4(n=positive integers), where rte is the well-known self-imaging distance of an amplitude grating. When the coherent laser beam is illuminated at the phase grating, the self-imaged images were obtained at $z_{T,p}$= $z_{T,a}$/4 and $z_{T,p}$=5 $z_{T,a}$/4 without any optics. On the other side, the phase-reversed self-imaging was obviously observed at $z_{T,p}$ = 3 $z_{T,a}$/4. The visibility of self-imaged images of a phase line grating as a function of the number of slits of the input grating was measured by the FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) results of the self-imaging images. As a result a stationary maximum visibility of V = 0.10 can be obtained from a grating with more than 15 slit pairs.n 15 slit pairs.

Generally, When we measure of object 3D surfaces with phase shifting shadow moire method, it is use of optical system consist of light source, grating, and ccd camera. At this time, it is important parameter that vertical distance of grating and camera, grating and light source, and horizontal distance of camera and light source. When use camera consist of complex lens vertical distance of grating and camera is unknown parameter. From this cause equivalent wave length of moire fringe is uncertain. In this study, We exactly obtain a vertical distance of grating and camera so improve on measurement accuracy.

We propose a method that realizes the modified illumination by implementing a binary phase grating at the backside of a photomask. By modeling the relationship between the shape of a grating on the photomask and the light intensity at the pupil plane, we developed a program named MIDAS that finds the optimum grating pattern with a stochastic approach. After applying the program to several examples, we found that the program finds the grating pattern for the modified illumination that we want. By applying the grating at the backside of a photomask, the light efficiency of modified illumination may be improved.
