  • The emerging standards since 1990's can be classified as 'system standards' (process-oriented standards) and they specify the process of an enterprise and also apply to almost all industries regardless of size, type and products. Notice that the conventional specification-oriented standards present relatively clear criteria even though the structure, performance, and terminology are defined in text-based form. However, the system standards dealing with the processes do not present a coherent guide. Therefore, it is difficult to analyze them with the same viewpoint, thereby resulting in differences in the level of understanding. This study is aimed at graphically modeling the system standards originally described in text-based form. The study has been carried out in the framework of the PMTE (Process, Methods, Tools, and Environment) paradigm. The system standard targeted here is ISO/IEC 15288. Firstly, review of the literature on the systems engineering (SE) standard/process and on the graphic model IDEF0 was done, respectively, for the parts of 'E' and 'M'. Then the SE process of the MIL-STD 499B was applied to ISO/IEC 15288 as 'P'. Finally, the graphical model was generated by AI0Wins as 'T'. As a result, the graphical model-based approach can complement the drawbacks of the text-based form.

  • This paper looks into the measurement of modeling ability in different fields like science, mathematics, operations research and management science and emulates the ideas to system analysis and design where modeling is a very useful skill. An assessment tool was designed to measure the graphical modeling ability in systems analysis and design. It was administered to 92 students and submitted to 10 MIS experts and tested statistically for its reliability and validity.

  • A power-plant simulation tool has been developed for training the plant operators and testing a plant control system. The simulation tool is composed of a graphic editor, a component model builder and a system simulation solver. Such new programing techniques as object-oriented modeling and GUI(Graphical User Interface) are employed in developing the simulation tool. The graphic editor is based on the OpenGL library for effective implementation of GUI while the component model builder is based on object-oriented programming for efficient generalization of component models. The developed tool has been verified through the simulation of a real power plant.

  • The compartmentation model is represented by the characteristics and geometric information of the spaces defined by the structural members which are used for the boundary planes of the compartment. For the efficient compartment modeling a program performing the compartmentation design by the chopping and merging method was presented by authors. In this research, the development of an interactive ship compartmentation modeller is introduced. It is natural that the value of the program lessens if the input process is complicated and uneasy, even though the internal techniques for the compartmentation modeling are superior. In this paper, a method for the convenient input is proposed and implemented with the help of a graphical user interface technique. The modeling method introduced in this paper performs an efficient compartmentation modeling fast and conveniently by the solid modeling concept and the graphical user interface.

  • This study is a numerical representative modeling analysis for the application of the process that unravels networks between cells in genetics to web of informatics. Using the probabilistic graphical model, the insight from the data describing biological networks is used for making a probabilistic function. Rather than a complex network of cells, we reconstruct a simple lower-stage model and show a genetic representation level from the genetic based network logic. We made probabilistic graphical models from genetic data and extends them to genetic representation data in the method of network modeling in informatics

  • The safety of nuclear power plants is analyzed by a probabilistic risk assessment, and the fault tree analysis is the most widely used method for a risk assessment with the event tree analysis. One of the well-known disadvantages of the fault tree is that drawing a fault tree for a complex system is a very cumbersome task. Thus, several graphical modeling methods have been proposed for the convenient and intuitive modeling of complex systems. In this paper, the reliability graph with general gates (RGGG) method, one of the intuitive graphical modeling methods based on Bayesian networks, is improved for the reliability analyses of dynamic systems that have various operation modes with time. A reliability matrix is proposed and it is explained how to utilize the reliability matrix in the RGGG for various cases of operation mode changes. The proposed RGGG with a reliability matrix provides a convenient and intuitive modeling of various operation modes of complex systems, and can also be utilized with dynamic nodes that analyze the failure sequences of subcomponents. The combinatorial use of a reliability matrix with dynamic nodes is illustrated through an application to a shutdown cooling system in a nuclear power plant.

  • Quantitative analysis of dynamic brain PET data using a tracer kinetic modeling has played important roles in the investigation of functional and molecular basis of various brain diseases. Parametric imaging of the kinetic parameters (voxel-wise representation of the estimated parameters) has several advantages over the conventional approaches using region of interest (ROI). Therefore, several strategies have been suggested to generate the parametric images with a minimal bias and variability in the parameter estimation. In this paper, we will review the several approaches for parametric imaging with linearized methods which include graphical analysis and mulilinear regression analysis.

  • We present a family of elaborate numerical models for simulation and systematic optimization of complex LCDs for demanding applications (e.g. LCD-TV). These numerical models comprise modules for solving LCD-related problems in one, two and three dimensions. The three modules feature an intuitive graphical user surface for a jump-start into modeling, a common database for a range of materials and components as well as sophisticated and proven algorithms with more than 15 years of reliable performance in the LCD-industry. Methods for obtaining data required for the modeling of key components are presented.
