  • The high-tech computer technology developments have greatly affected the area of design education. Starting from the mid 80s, innovations in visual presentation methods have heightened with 2D computer graphic programs, CAD & 3D modeling, and Rapid Prototype that allows dimensional generation. The specialty and quality in design studio education have advanced due to the development in presentation methods such as Power Point and Keynote. But there are many problems with the current method of presenting the visual outcome in a data format using beam projectors, which is a vertical presenting method compared to the old studio study method of conducting discussions and reviews based on the substantial outcome. The essence of studio study that allows for comparisons and analysis by horizontally opening up the various work outcomes is being offset. Also the requirement for manual idea sketching work that plays an important role in the initial design phase continuing to decrease due to the digital working process dependence and cumbersome procedures in the presentation. In order to resolve this problem, the CALM system (Class Applied LCD Modular System) has been developed that replaces the method of attaching the sketches or renderings on the wall with a digital multi-display system. In a nutshell, individuals will upload the outcomes online and display them on the CALM system studio that is composed of 32 LCD (Columns: 4 $\times$ Rows: 8) monitors that are 19 inches in size so that various personnel can openly study the design outcomes. Also the central 42 inch PDP monitor that offers touch pad capability allows each design outcome to be described and examined by expanding. The concept phase of this development process has elevated to the production of an operating prototype that is being reviewed of its practicality. It is considered that the development of this system will decrease the extreme tendency of depending on digital operation but achieve revitalization of a more realistic and opened studio study environment compared to the individual consulting method of the old study approach.

  • In robot operation, a motor with multi-degree of freedom motion control and an encoder for motor control are needed. To perform precise motion, location, and velocity control, the operation of motor and encoder with superior performance is important. In this paper, we studied performance evaluation system that can evaluate the performance of motor and encoder. The performance of motor and encoder can be evaluated in terms of disconnection check, signal variation count, and U, V, W signal check. Disconnection check verifies signal connection between a motor and an encoder, signal variation check verifies A, B signal by counting the number of signal A, B when a motor revolves, and U, V, W signal check verifies operating direction of a motor. The result is shown at graphic LCD integrated in system, and can be checked in PC with PC communication.

  • In this paper, an Android based ubiquitous interface for controlling service robots is presented. The robot server captures the images for the front view of the robot, makes a map of the environment and its position, produces a graphic image of its pose, and then transmits them to the Android client. The Android client displays them in the LCD panel and transfers control information obtained from touched buttons to the server. In the interface environment, we implement remote moving mode, autonomous moving mode, and remote operation mode for being used for versatile operability to the robot with limited screen of the smart phone. Experimental results show the implementation of the proposed interface in Android installed on Motoroi to control a service robot, and demonstrate its feasibility.

  • Recently, retail technology has been developed by the rapid evolution of e-commerce and a representative example is ESL technology. In this study, we investigate ESL technology, market status and forecasts, and analyze the competitive structure between relational companies. Market analysis refers to data from market reports of Marketsandmarkets and Research, and internet media. In ESL, the display field is predicted to account for 43% of the total market in 2026, and is converting from LCD to electronic paper. The segmented type is becoming more advanced into the full-graphic type, and CAGR of 18.7% for 3-7 inches and 20.6% for 7-10 inches is predicted. The demand for ESL is greatest in North America and Europe, but CAGR is the highest in the Asia-Pacific region at 19.1%. Since ESL technology has a lot of overlap with semiconductor and display technology, the Asia-Pacific region is relatively advantageous, and this has led to rapid growth of domestic companies. However, it is expected that competition from European companies that are actually owned by Chinese companies will increase in the future, so continuous technological development and new market development are necessary.

Development of Digital Solder Station Based on PID Controller (PID 제어기를 이용한 전기인두기의 온도 제어 시스템 개발)

  • In this paper, we developed a digital soldering station based on PID controller, which supply stable power by controlling the current of heater of soldering iron. The proposed system designed PID controller to converge quickly to the set up temperature by user, and regain the lost of heat by external factors quickly. PID controller, designed by Ziegler-Nichols' tuning method, decides triac's trigger timing using setting temperature and present temperature to control the phase of AC 24V power that supply to the heater. Also, we give the function that shows present temperature and setting temperature of iron, and working time by graphic LCD. And during the rest time, we decided the power saving and extension of iron tip by dropping to the optimal temperature. Two experiments had implemented in $25^{\circ}C$ laboratory to confirm the performance of proposed method. The first experiment took 12sec, 13sec, 16sec, 18sec, reaching to $200^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$, $480^{\circ}C$ respectively which result showed shorten of rising time than previous method. In the loading experiment of $300^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$, $480^{\circ}C$ steady state showed temperature drop of $3.8^{\circ}C$, $4.1^{\circ}C$, $4.5^{\circ}C$ which result showed the low temperature deviation than previous method.

  • This paper describes the GUI implementation of an intelligent embedded system which can be used for a personal information platform and an industrial mobile application system. It shows the architecture and the necessary structure and components of X Window graphic system. The embedded system used in this paper has low power and high performance processor, and has a large memory size with a nand-flash memory device. We configured the linux kernel with a TIT-LCD and touch screen device for the operation of X Window system. And we used GTK+2 for running application softwares on the platform embedded system. The GUI library of GTK+2 is useful for providing the same graphics programming environment with host Linux PC. We have developed in this paper the X Window system and the GUI environment for GTK+2 in a new embedded system, and verified the full operation of X Window system and application softwares using GTK+2. The embedded system with large memory size can be used in X Window application softwares for providing a personal information service with a mobile embedded system.

BIOFIT - Smart, Portable, Wearable and Wireless Digital Exercise Trainer Device with Biofeedback Capability

  • Today Human Personal Trainers are becoming very famous in this health conscious world. They teach user to achieve fitness goals in managed way. Due to their high fee and tight schedule they are unavailable to mass number of people. Another solution to this problem is to develop digital personal trainer portable instrument that may replace human personal trainers. We developed a portable digital exercise trainer device - BIOFIT that manages, monitors and records the user's physical status and workout during exercise session. It guides the user to exercise efficiently for specific fitness goal. It keeps the full exercise program i.e. exercises start date and time, duration, mode, control parameter, intensity in its memory which helps the user in managing his exercise. Exercise program can be downloaded from the internet. During exercise it continuously monitors the user's physiological parameters: heart rate, number of steps walked, and energy consumed. If these parameters do not range within prescribed target zone, the BIOFIT will alarm the user as a feedback to control exercise. The BIOFIT displays these parameters on graphic LCD. During exercise it continuously records the heart rate and number of steps walked every 10 seconds along with exercise date and time. This stored information can be used as treatment for the user by an exercise expert. Real-time ECG monitoring can be viewed wirelessly (RF Communication) on a remote PC.

  • Generally an operator would take notice at putting a patient under anesthesia. If the operation is executed in mistake, the patient is exposed to danger. The object of this Paper is that a system is developed for an accuracy of system and a convenience of user interface to prevent an operation of several elements of risk by mistake. The part of electrical system particularly is made for convenience of a manipulation using electrical switch and encoder. A real-time monitoring system is developed for an airway pressure and a gas concentration of carbon dioxide of patient using graphic LCD(liquid crystal display). Moreover, this flow control system could be developed control with accuracy by feedback control method. This is implemented using flow control valve and flow sensor. The implemented system gives convenience and precision of a manipulation of variable value using developed technique. This system shows guaranteed stabilization and confidence of anesthesia ventilator by notifying us that patient's state and information in case of being out of alarm range of variable value.

  • This paper describes the design guideline, methodology and general specification of the developed 12 channel interpretive electrocardiograph. The developed 12 channel electrocardiograph consists of main module, patient module, DSP module, interface module, power/battery module, TFT color LCD and thermal recorder. The control panel of the system has full keyboard, rotate/push button, function key and unctional indicators. The graphic user interface program conveniently allows user to record, setup, store, manage ECGs. A variety of system configurations give it ability to make user favorable environment. This system also has a resting adult's ECG analysis program. The developed system and program will be continusely evolved using a database of clinically correlated ECGs.

Why A Multimedia Approach to English Education\ulcorner

  • To make a long story short I made up my mind to experiment with a multimedia approach to my classroom presentations two years ago because my ways of giving instructions bored the pants off me as well as my students. My favorite ways used to be sometimes referred to as classical or traditional ones, heavily dependent on the three elements: teacher's mouth, books, and chalk. Some call it the 'MBC method'. To top it off, I tried audio-visuals such as tape recorders, cassette players, VTR, pictures, and you name it, that could help improve my teaching method. And yet I have been unhappy about the results by a trial and error approach. I was determined to look for a better way that would ensure my satisfaction in the first place. What really turned me on was a multimedia CD ROM title, ELLIS (English Language Learning Instructional Systems) developed by Dr. Frank Otto. This is an integrated system of learning English based on advanced computer technology. Inspired by the utility and potential of such a multimedia system for regular classroom or lab instructions, I designed a simple but practical multimedia language learning laboratory in 1994 for the first time in Korea(perhaps for the first time in the world). It was high time that the conventional type of language laboratory(audio-passive) at Hahnnam be replaced because of wear and tear. Prior to this development, in 1991, I put a first CALL(Computer Assisted Language Learning) laboratory equipped with 35 personal computers(286), where students were encouraged to practise English typing, word processing and study English grammar, English vocabulary, and English composition. The first multimedia language learning laboratory was composed of 1) a multimedia personal computer(486DX2 then, now 586), 2) VGA multipliers that enable simultaneous viewing of the screen at control of the instructor, 3) an amplifIer, 4) loud speakers, 5)student monitors, 6) student tables to seat three students(a monitor for two students is more realistic, though), 7) student chairs, 8) an instructor table, and 9) cables. It was augmented later with an Internet hookup. The beauty of this type of multimedia language learning laboratory is the economy of furnishing and maintaining it. There is no need of darkening the facilities, which is a must when an LCD/beam projector is preferred in the laboratory. It is headset free, which proved to make students exasperated when worn more than- twenty minutes. In the previous semester I taught three different subjects: Freshman English Lab, English Phonetics, and Listening Comprehension Intermediate. I used CD ROM titles like ELLIS, Master Pronunciation, English Tripple Play Plus, English Arcade, Living Books, Q-Steps, English Discoveries, Compton's Encyclopedia. On the other hand, I managed to put all teaching materials into PowerPoint, where letters, photo, graphic, animation, audio, and video files are orderly stored in terms of slides. It takes time for me to prepare my teaching materials via PowerPoint, but it is a wonderful tool for the sake of presentations. And it is worth trying as long as I can entertain my students in such a way. Once everything is put into the computer, I feel relaxed and a bit excited watching my students enjoy my presentations. It appears to be great fun for students because they have never experienced this type of instruction. This is how I freed myself from having to manipulate a cassette tape player, VTR, and write on the board. The student monitors in front of them seem to help them concentrate on what they see, combined with what they hear. All I have to do is to simply click a mouse to give presentations and explanations, when necessary. I use a remote mouse, which prevents me from sitting at the instructor table. Instead, I can walk around in the room and enjoy freer interactions with students. Using this instrument, I can also have my students participate in the presentation. In particular, I invite my students to manipulate the computer using the remote mouse from the student's seat not from the instructor's seat. Every student appears to be fascinated with my multimedia approach to English teaching because of its unique nature as a new teaching tool as we face the 21st century. They all agree that the multimedia way is an interesting and fascinating way of learning to satisfy their needs. Above all, it helps lighten their drudgery in the classroom. They feel other subjects taught by other teachers should be treated in the same fashion. A multimedia approach to education is impossible without the advent of hi-tech computers, of which multi functions are integrated into a unified system, i.e., a personal computer. If you have computer-phobia, make quick friends with it; the sooner, the better. It can be a wonderful assistant to you. It is the Internet that I pay close attention to in conjunction with the multimedia approach to English education. Via e-mail system, I encourage my students to write to me in English. I encourage them to enjoy chatting with people all over the world. I also encourage them to visit the sites where they offer study courses in English conversation, vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, reading, and writing. I help them search any subject they want to via World Wide Web. Some day in the near future it will be the hub of learning for everybody. It will eventually free students from books, teachers, libraries, classrooms, and boredom. I will keep exploring better ways to give satisfying instructions to my students who deserve my entertainment.
