  • Graphene films have a strong potential to replace indium tin oxide anodes in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), to date. However, the luminous efficiency of OLEDs with graphene anodes has been limited by a lack of efficient methods to improve the low work function and reduce the sheet resistance of graphene films to the levels required for electrodes. Here, we fabricate flexible OLEDs by modifying the graphene anode to have a high work function and low sheet resistance, and thus achieve extremely high luminous power efficiencies (37.2 lm/W in fluorescent OLEDs, 102.7 lm/W in phosphorescent OLEDs), which are significantly higher than those of optimized devices with an indium tin oxide anode (24.1 lm/W in fluorescent OLEDs, 85.6 lm/W in phosphorescent OLEDs). We also fabricate flexible white OLED lighting devices using the graphene anode. These results demonstrate the great potential of graphene anodes for use in a wide variety of high-performance flexible organic optoelectronics.

  • To satisfy the growing demand for high-performance batteries, diverse novel anode materials with high specific capacities have been developed to replace commercial graphite. Among them, cobalt hydroxides have received considerable attention as promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries as they exhibit a high reversible capacity owing to the additional reaction of LiOH, followed by conversion reaction. In this study, we introduced graphene in the fabrication of Co(OH)2-based anode materials to further improve electrochemical performance. The resultant Co(OH)2/graphene composite exhibited a larger reversible capacity of ~1090 mAh g-1, compared with ~705 mAh g-1 for bare Co(OH)2. Synchrotron-based analyses were conducted to explore the beneficial effects of graphene on the composite material. The experimental results demonstrate that introducing graphene into Co(OH)2 facilitates both the conversion and reaction of the LiOH phase and provides additional lithium storage sites. In addition to insights into how the electrochemical performance of composite materials can be improved, this study also provides an effective strategy for designing composite materials.

  • The purpose of this study is to research and develop graphene composite for lithium polymer battery. VO(graphene) composite is one of the promising material as a electrode active material for lithium polymer battery(LPB). We investigated AC impedance response and charge/discharge cycling of VO(graphene)/SPE/Li cells. The first discharge capacity of VO(graphene) cathode with 50wt.% V$_2$O$\sub$5/ was 150mAh/g, while that of VO(graphene) cathode with 85wt.% V$_2$O$\sub$5/ was 248mAh/g. The Ah efficiency was above 98% after the 2nd cycle. The discharge capacity of VO(graphene) anode with 3wt.% V$_2$O$\sub$5/ was 718 and 266mAh/g at cycle 1 and 10 at room temperature, respectively. The VO(graphene) anode with 3wt.% V$_2$O$\sub$5/ in PVDF-PAN-PC-EC-LiC1O$_4$ electrolyte showed good capacity with cycling.

  • We investigated the adsorption of Na on graphene and graphene oxide, which are used as anode materials in sodium ion batteries, using density functional theory. The adsorption energy for Na on graphene was -0.507 eV at the hollow sites, implying that adsorption was favorable. In the case of graphene oxide, Na atoms were separately adsorbed on the epoxide and hydroxyl functional groups. The adsorption of Na on graphene oxide-epoxide (adsorption energy of -1.024 eV) was found to be stronger than the adsorption of Na on pristine graphene. However, the adsorption of Na on graphene oxide-hydroxyl resulted in the generation of NaOH as a by-product. Using density of states (DOS) calculations, we found that the DOS of the Na-adsorbed graphene was shifted down more than that of the Na-adsorbed graphene oxide-epoxide. In addition, the intensity of the DOS around the Fermi level for the Na-adsorbed graphene was higher than that for the Na-adsorbed graphene oxide-epoxide.

  • Due to its high theoretical capacity, Silicon (Si) has shown great potential as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the large volume change of Si during cycling leads to poor cycling stability and low Coulombic efficiency. In this study, we synthesized Si/Carbon C45:Graphene composites using a ball-milling method with a fixed Si content (20%) and investigated the influence of the C45/Gr ratio on the electrochemical performance of the composites. The results showed that carbon C45 networks can provide good conductivity, but tend to break at Si locations, resulting in poor conductivity. However, the addition of graphene helps to reconnect the broken C45 networks, improving the conductivity of the composite. Moreover, the C45 can also act as a protective coating around Si particles, reducing the volume expansion of Si during charging/discharging cycles. The Si/C45:Gr (70:10 wt%) composite exhibits improved electrochemical performance with high capacity (~1660 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C) and cycling stability (~1370 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles). This work highlights the effective role of carbon C45 and graphene in Si/C composites for enhancing the performance of Si-based anode materials for LIBs.

  • Solid oxide fuel cell has received more attention recently due to the fuel flexibility via internal reforming. Commonly used Ni/YSZ anode, however, can be easily deactivated by carbon coking in hydrocarbon fuels. The carbon deposition problem can minimize by developing alternative perovskite anode. This study is focused on improving conductivity and catalytic activity of the perovskite anode by introducing rGO (reduced graphene oxide). Sr0.92Y0.08TiO3(SYT) anode with perovskite structure was synthesized with 1wt% of rGO. The presence of rGO during anode fabricating process and cell operation is confirmed through XPS and Raman analysis. The maximum power density of rGO/SYT anode improved to 3 times in H2 and 6 times in CH4 comparing to that of SYT anode due to the high electrical conductivity and good catalytic activity for CH4.

  • To promote the photoelectric conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), graphene is introduced as a working electrode with $TiO_2$ in this study, because it has great transparency and very good conductivity. XRD patterns indicate the presence of graphene and $TiO_2$ particles in graphene-linked $TiO_2$ samples. Moreover, TEM pictures also show that the nano-sized $TiO_2$ particles are highly dispersed and well-linked onto the thin layered graphene. On the basis of the UV-visible spectra, the band gaps of $TiO_2$, 1.0 wt % graphene-$TiO_2$, 5.0 wt % graphene-$TiO_2$, and 10.0 wt % graphene-$TiO_2$ are 3.16, 2.94, 2.25, and 2.11 eV, respectively. Compared to pure $TiO_2$, the energy conversion efficiency was enhanced considerably by the application of graphene-linked $TiO_2$ anode films in the DSSCs to approximately 6.05% for 0.1 wt % graphene-$TiO_2$ with N719 dye (10.0 mm film thickness and $5.0mm{\times}5.0mm$ cell area) under $100mW/cm^2$ of simulated sunlight. The quantum efficiency was the highest when 1.0 wt % of graphene was used. In impedance curves, the resistance was smallest for 1.0 wt % graphene-$TiO_2$-DSSC.

  • In this study, $Fe_3O_4$/graphene and CuO/graphene composites were synthesized by the polyol reduction method using ethylene glycol, and their performances as the anodes of lithium ion batteries were evaluated. The physical characteristics of the synthesized composites were analyzed by SEM, XRD, and TGA. In addition, their electrochemical properties were examined by the electrochemical analysis techniques such as charge/discharge performance, cyclic voltammetry, and AC impedance spectroscopy. The cells composed of $Fe_3O_4$/graphene and CuO/graphene composites showed better performance than the graphene electrode, due to the dispersion of nanosized $Fe_3O_4$ or CuO on the surface of graphene and the formation of good electrical network in the electrode. Their composites kept the reversible capacity more than 600 mAh/g even after the charging/discharging of 30 cycles.

  • Recently, high electrochemical performance anode materials for lithium ion secondary batteries are of interest. Here, we present silicon-carbon-graphene (Si-C-GR) composites for high performance anode materials of lithium ion secondary battery (LIB). Aerosol process and heat-treatment were employed to prepare the Si-C-GR composites using a colloidal mixture of silicon, glucose, and graphene oxide precursor. The effects of the size of the silicon particles in Si-C-GR composites on the material properties including the morphology and crystal structure were investigated. Silicon particles ranged from 50 nm to 1 ㎛ in average diameter were employed while concentration of silicon, graphene oxide and glucose was fixed in the aerosol precursor. Morphology of as-fabricated Si-C-GR composites was generally the shape of a crumpled paper ball and the Si particles were well wrapped in carbon and graphene. The size range of composites was about from 2.2 to 2.9 ㎛. The composites including silicon particles larger than 200 nm in size exhibited higher performance as LIB anodes such as capacity and coulombic efficiency than silicon particles less than 100 nm, which were about 1500 mAh/g at 100 cycles in capacity and 99% in coulombic efficiency, respectively.

  • Graphene is a two-dimensional nanosheet consisting of honeycomb lattices of $sp^2$ carbon atoms. It is one of promising active materials for the anode of lithium-ion battery and the electrode of supercapacitor, due to its large specific surface area(theoretically $2600m^2\;g^{-1}$), high electric conductivity(typically $8{\times}10^5S\;cm^{-1}$), and mechanical strength. In this review, the synthetic methods of graphene nanosheet and graphene-based nanocomposite are introduced. Also, the electrochemical properties obtainable when the graphene-based materials are adopted to the electrodes of lithium-ion battery and supercapacitor are discussed along with their nanostructures.
