  • The aim of this study was to test hypothesis that low sink size could mitigate deterioration of grain filling characteristics under high grain filling temperature. To achieve this aim, we selected Donganbyeo as a tolerant and Ilpumbyeo as susceptible variety to high temperature during grain filling period through screening 6 rice varieties. Then their spikelets number and the ratio of superior and inferior spikelet were compared. Grain weight and head rice ratio of Ilpumbyeo decreased significantly in high temperature. Ilpumbyeo had more spikelets than Donganbyeo. However, there was no significant difference between two varieties in the ratio of superior and inferior spikelets. So we tried to investigate the varietal difference of grain filling characteristics with removing inferior spikelets. Removing inferior spikelet in both of varieties could recover grain weight but not improve head rice ratio under high temperature. These results showed that sink/source ratio affected grain weight but didn't affect head rice ratio. Therefore, new approach was required to improve head rice ratio beyond sink/source ratio under high temperature.

  • Effects of microstructural change, tensile properties and impact property according to the change of austenitizing temperature and tempering temperature of AISI 51B20 steel were examined. Regardless of austenite grain size, lath martensite with needle and packet shapes was found at tempering temperature of $300^{\circ}C{\sim}400^{\circ}C$. The needles of lath martensite changed to parallel packet at tempering temperature of $450^{\circ}C{\sim}600^{\circ}C$. As tempering temperature increased, tensile strength, yield strength and hardness decreased, while elongation, ratio of reduction area and Charpy impact energy increased. Grain size increased when quenching temperature was $930^{\circ}C$. Grain size had prominent effect on the mechanical properties of AISI 51B20 steel. Ratio of tensile strength/yield strength and yield strength autenitized at $880^{\circ}C$ followed by tempering at $350^{\circ}C{\sim}450^{\circ}C$ showed higher values than that of autenization at $930^{\circ}C$ due to fine grain size.

  • A one-dimensional heat conduction problem in cylindrical coordinate system was solved using Crank-Nicolson finite difference method to predicting the temperature distribution in rice storage bin with wall insulator. The model can simulate the grain temperatures in insulated round bins using the input data of initial grain temperature. ambient air temperature, wind velocity, solar radiation on a horizontal surface, and thermal properties of grain, bin wall, wall insulator, insulator cover, and air. Temperatures were collected at the bin center, 0.65m in radial direction from the center, and near the bin wall in 2.7m diameter bin filled with rough rice to depth of 3.0m were used to validate the simulation model. Grain temperatures predicted by the model were in very good agreement with the measured temperatures. The residual mean square error between measured and predicted grain temperatures at the bin center was $1.38^{\circ}C$.

  • The temperature and the grain boundary precipitation have the great influence on the low-cycle fatigue behavior of austenite stainless steel at elevated temperature. For the purpose of investigating the mechanism concerning the change of fatigue micro crack mode in SUS 316 under various conditions low-cycle fatigue test was carried out at the elevated temperature 600.deg.C, plastic strain range 2% and constant strain rate .5c.p.m. A special attention is given to the observation of intergranular crack initiation. The results obtained are summarized as follows. The low-cycle fatigue behavior of SUS 316 at 600.deg.C is affected by transition of crack initiation mode from intergranular to transgranular. The transition is due to the aging effect, which is caused by grain boundary precipitations of Cr$\_$23/C$\_$6/. Since the intergranular crack initiation is brought about by the grain boundary sliding, the transgranular crack initiates in case that the strengthening of grain boundary due to the precipitation of Cr$\_$23/C$\_$6/ carbides takes place ahead of the intergranular crack initiation.

  • The 6.5wt %Si-Fe alloy sheets were made by the twin roll process. The magnetic properties and microstructures of sheets annealed in the sulfur atmosphere were studied. In the as-prepared sheet, non-oriented columnar grains about $10{\mu}m$ in diameter were observed, which grew from the surface to the inner part of the sheet. When the annealing temperature was around $700^{\circ}C$, the primary recrystallization was formed around the middle part of the sheet thickness, and the grain size increased with increasing annealing temperature. At the annealing temperature of $900^{\circ}C$, the grain size became $30{\sim}40{\mu}m$. Around the annealing temperature, the motive force of the grain growth is the grain boundary energy. However, above $1000^{\circ}C$ the surface energy played an important role in the observed grain growth. When the sheet were annealed at $1200^{\circ}C$, the grains whose (100) planes were paralled to the thin plate surface grew, and all sheet surfaces were covered with these grains after 1 hour annealing. This phenomenon is called tertiary recrystallization. A difference in surface energy between (100) and (110) surfaces provides a driving force for growth of tertiary grains. The coercive force was 0.27 mOe and the AC core loss $W_{12/50}$ was 0.38w/kg for the 6.5wt%Si-Fe alloy.

  • In $TiO_2$-CuO systems, low-temperature sinterability was investigated by a conventional sintering method. Sintering temperatures were set at under $950^{\circ}C$, at which the volume diffusion is inactive. The temperatures are less than the melting point of Ag ($961^{\circ}C$), which is often used as an internal conductor in low-temperature co-fired ceramic technology. To optimize the amount of CuO dopant, various dopant contents were added. The optimum level for enhanced densification was 2 wt% CuO. Excess dopants were segregated to the grain boundaries. The segregated dopants supplied a high diffusion path, by which grain boundary diffusion improved. At lower temperatures in the solid state region, grain boundary diffusion was the principal mass transport mechanism for densification. The enhanced grain boundary diffusion, therefore, improved densification. In this regard, the results of this study prove that the sintering mechanism was the same as that of activated sintering.

  • Titanium-Boron-Aluminium master alloys are used extensively to grain-refine a wide range of aluminium alloys. This experiment was performed by various amounts of AlTi5B1 addition to the technical aluminium alloys, and also by changing cast temperature and hold time of the melts. The macrostructures were shown that with increasing the addition of AlTi5B1 to the melts, the grain became finer. In the case of cast temperature high enough over $900^{\circ}C$, the grain became coarser, but hold time change not affected on the grain refinement. Particles of $TiAl_3$, and $TiB_2$ were found in the grains and grainboundaries. The important role of grain refinement in this experiment were mainly $TiAl_3$, and also $TiB_2$ those have been confirmed in TEM, SEM, EDS, WDX and X-ray diffraction.

  • This work describes a method of determining material parameters included in recrystallization and grain growth models. Focus is on the recrystallization and grain growth models of Ni-Fe base superalloy, Alloy 718. High temperature compression tests at different strain, strain rate and temperature conditions were chosen to determine the material parameters of dynamic recrystallization model. The critical strain and dynamically recrystallized grain size and fraction at various process variables were quantitated with the microstructual analysis and strain-stress relationships of the compression tests. Besides, isothermal heat treatments were utilized to fit the material constants included in the grain growth model. Verification of the determined material parameters is carried out by comparing the measured data obtained from other compression tests.

  • To clarify the effect of temperature during ripening on grain quality, rice plant which was grown under normal natural conditions untill heading stage was subjected various temperature regimes during grain filling stage. Three varieties, Odaebyeo, Hwaseongbyeo and Dongjinbyeo were used. Grains on primary and secondary-rachis branches were harvested seperately and measured specific gravity, grain size and weight. The optimum daily temperature for grain filling of rice during ripening period was about 22$^{\circ}C$ and grain filling under alternating temperature(26/18$^{\circ}C$, day /night) was better than constant temperature (22 /22$^{\circ}C$) based on 1, 000-grain weight and yield. Grain size based on volume per grain was smallest under the constant temperature of 22 /22$^{\circ}C$. The size of secondary-rachis branches was smaller than primary-rachis branch. The difference in size between primary and secondary-rachis branches was biggest in Hwaseongbyeo, followed by Odaebyeo and Dongjinbyeo. The temperature regimes treated did not influence the grain size difference between branches so much. The 1000-grain weight was lighter under high temperature than low temperature in Odaebyeo, but reversed tendency was observed in Dongjinbyeo of secondary rachis-branches.

  • A small amount of misch metal and/or Zr was added as a dopant to 70.5wt----Cu-26wt----Zn-3.5wt----Al shape memory alloy in order to study the effect of grain refinement and heat treatments on the transformation behavior, stabilization of martensite, and shape memory ability. It was found that the addition of misch metal and Zr was very effective for reducing the grain size. The fracture mode has been changed from intergranular brittle fracture to ductile fracture with void formation and coalescence by the addition of misch metal and Zr. Aging of the ${\beta}$-phase decreases the $M_s$ temperature, but that of the martensite phase increases the $A_s$ temperature. The hysteresis of transformation temperature ${\Delta}T(A_s-M_s)$ has an increasing tendancy by grain refinement. The crystal structure of martensite was identified as monoclinic structure. As the grain size decreased, martensite stabilization more easily occured and the shape, memory ability has been reduced by the grain size refined.
