Recently equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) has been employed to produce ultra-fine grain size materials. In this paper pure-Zirconium is considered due to its applicability to nuclear reactors. Among many process parameters of ECAP frictional effect on the plastic deformation of die has been investigated. The back pressure effect due to friction increases the stress level of die especially at the crossing area of channels, which may result in plastic deformation of die. The finite element method has been employed to investigate this issue.
Mg alloys have drawn a huge attention in the field of transportation and consumer electronics industries since it is the lightest alloy which could be industrially applicable. Most Mg alloy components have been fabricated by casting method. However, there have been a lot of research activities on the wrought alloys and their plastic forming process recently. The deformation behavior of an AZ31 Mg alloy at the elevated temperature was examined firstly to find out the optimum plastic forming range in terms of temperature and strain rate. During high temperature deformation, AZ31 alloy is usually undergone the dynamic recrystallization which influence the deformation behavior in turn. In the present study, the effect of deformation on dynamic recrystallization of an AZ31 alloy was investigated to clarify the relation between the deformation and recrystallization. In an AZ31 alloy system, the dynamic recrystallization was found to occur continuously. Recrystallized grain size was dependent on the stress level.
In this study, bottom-up type powder processing and top-down type SPD (severe plastic deformation) approaches were combined in order to achieve both full density and grain refinement of Al-20 wt% Si powders without grain growth, which was considered as a bottle neck of the bottom-up method using the conventional powder metallurgy of compaction and sintering. ECAP (Equal channel angular pressing), one of the most promising method in SPD, was used for the powder consolidation. The powder ECAP processing with 1, 2, 4 and 8 passes was conducted for 10$0^{\circ}C$ and 20$0^{\circ}C$ It was found by microhardness, compression tests and micro-structure characterization that high mechanical strength could be achieved effectively as a result of the well bonded powder contact surface during ECAP process. The SPD processing of powders is a viable method to achieve both fully density and nanostructured materials.
Magnesium and its alloys are attracted towards all engineering applications like automotive, marine, aerospace etc. due to its inherent high strength to weight ratio. But, extensive use of Mg alloys is limited to the current scenario because of low wear and corrosion resistance behavior. However, equal channel angular press is one of the severe plastic deformation technique which has been effective method to improve the wear and corrosion resistance by achieving fine grain structure. In this study, the effect of grain refinement on wear and corrosion resistance of AZ80 Mg alloys were investigated. The wear behavior of the coarse and fine-grained Mg alloys was examined through $L_9$ orthogonal array experiments in order to comprehend the wear behavior under varies control parameters. It was shown that ECAPed alloy increased the wear and corrosion resistance of the Mg alloy through the formation of fine grain and uniform distribution of secondary ${\beta}-phase$. Also, the performance of AZ80 Mg alloy for these changeswas discussed through SEM morphology.
Due to the permanent damage to structures during earthquakes, soil liquefaction is an important issue in geotechnical earthquake engineering that needs to be investigated. Typical examples of soil liquefaction have been observed in many earthquakes, particularly in Alaska, Niigata (1964), San Fernando (1971), Loma Prieta (1989), Kobe (1995) and Izmit (1999) earthquakes. In this study, liquefaction behavior of uniform sands of different grain sizes was investigated by using the energy-based method. For this purpose, a total of 36 deformation-controlled tests were conducted on water-saturated samples in undrained conditions by using the cyclic simple shear test method and considering the relative density, effective stress and mean grain size parameters that affect the cumulative liquefaction energy. The results showed that as the mean grain size decreases, the liquefaction potential of the sand increases. In addition, with increasing effective stress and relative density, the resistance of sand against liquefaction decreases. Multiple regression analysis was performed on the test results and separate correlations were proposed for the samples with mean grain size of 0.11-0.26 mm and for the ones with 0.45-0.85 mm. The recommended relationships were compared to the ones existing in the literature and compatible results were obtained.

In this study, bottom-up type powder processing and top-down type SPD (severe plastic deformation) approaches were combined in order to achieve both full density and grain refinement of metallic powders with least grain growth. ECAP (Equal channel angular pressing) was used for the powder consolidation. We investigated the consolidation, plastic deformation and microstructure evolution behavior of the metallic powders during ECAP using an experimental method. It was found that high mechanical strength could be achieved effectively as a result of the well bonded powder contact surface during ECAP process of gas atomized Al-Si powders.
A mathematical formulation is presented to model anisotropy from the deformation textures developed in a forming process. In this work, a micro-mechanical-based polycrystalline analysis is implemented into a consistent finite element method for the anisotropic, viscoplastic deformation of polycrystalline metals. As suggested by Taylor, the deformation of each grain in an aggregate is assumed to be same as the macroscopic deformation of an aggregate or a macro-continuum point. Algorithms are developed to represent the plastic anisotropy, such as the anisotropic yield surface and R-value, from the predicted deformation texture. As applications, the evolution of texture in rolling, upsetting and drawing/extrusion processes are simulated and the corresponding changes of mechanical properties such as yield surface and R-value are predicted.
In this paper a finite element based system is presented for the prediction of the distributions of the recrystallized grain sizes in the workpiece in hot forging. The system adopts a fully coupled finite element thermo-mechanical model for predicting plastic deformation and heat transfer occurring in the workpiece and employs existing metallurgical models relating the recrystalliza-tion behavior with the thermo-mechanical variables such as temperatures strain and strain rate. The system is applied to upsetting of cylindrical preform. The predicted grain sizes are compared with the measurements. It is further applied to forging of a complex-shaped product.
Ultra-fine grained (UFG) Al alloys, which have submicron grain structures, are expected to show outstanding high strength at ambient temperature and excellent superplastic deformation at elevated temperatures and high strain rate. In order to get the UFG microstructure, various kind of severe plastic deformation (SPD) processes have been developed. Among these processes, accumulative roll bonding (ARB) process is a promising process to make bulky Al sheets with ultrafine grained structure continuously. The purpose of the present study is to clarify the grain refinement mechanism during the ARB process and to investigate on the effects of ultra-fine grained structure on the mechanical properties. In addition, UFG AA8011 alloy (Al-0.72wt%Fe-0.63wt%Si) manufactured by the ARB had fairly large tensile elongation, keeping on the strength. In order to clarify the reason for the increase of elongation in the UFG AA8011 alloy, detailed microstructural and crystallographic analysis was performed by TEM/Kikuchi-line and SEM/EBSP method. The unique tensile properties of the UFG AA8011 alloy could be explained by enhanced dynamic recovery at ambient temperature, owing to the large number of high angle boundaries and the Al matrix with high purity.
Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) has been studied intensively over the decade as a typical top-down process to produce ultrafine/nano structured materials. ECAP has successfully been applied for a processing method of severe plastic deformation to achieve grain refinement of magnesium and to enhance its low ductility. However, difficult-to-work materials such as magnesium and titanium alloys were susceptible to shear localization during ECAP, leading to surface cracking. The front pressure, developed by Australian researchers, can impose hydrostatic pressure and increase the strain level in the material, preventing the surface defect on workpiece. In the present study, we investigated the deformation and fracture behavior of pure magnesium using experimental and numerical methods. The finite element method with different ductile fracture models was employed to simulate plastic deformation and fracture behavior of the workpiece.
