Fabrication of a graded index profile was possible via photochemical reaction of cinnamoyl groups with 350 nm wavelength UV light to form crosslinked structures. Such structural change may induce the change in the refractive index. In order to generate graded index profile in the PMMA polymer optical fiber (POF) with cinnamoyl groups by photochemistry, a methyl methacrylate monomer containing a cinnamoyl functional group in the side chain were prepared. This monomer was then copolymerized with methyl methacrylate with various compositions not only to utilize advantages of poly(methyl methacrylate) but also to overcome the drawbacks of the cinnamate homopolymer. Changes of refractive indices were investigated with various contents of cinnamoyl group and varying irradiation time. Large change in the refractive index (${\Delta}{\approx}0.01$) and its proper profile shape ($g{\approx}2.2$) can be obtained by changing irradiation time.

This paper shows an antireflection coating design skill for utilization the thin-film silicon solar cell in the future. The reflectivity of each index profile previously suggested as linear, cubic and quintic function has been calculated and compared. Each index profile is applied to the antireflection coating consisting of 6 layers with 180nm thickness. Also we suggest the graded index profile and compare it's reflectivity to the linear, cubic and quintic's ones. As a results we find the reflectivity generally decreases as the order goes to higher. However the reflectivity in the graded index profile shows the higher(lower) value than ones in the linear, cubic and quintic especially in the shorter(longer) wavelength range from 500 nm to below 700 nm(above 700 nm to 800 nm). Therefore we find that the graded index profile structure could be applied for the better antireflection coating design scheme especially for optical device and optical filter in the range of from deep red to infrared.
Functionally graded materials (FGM) of PSZ/NiCrAlY on Inconel substrate were fabricated by detonation gun spraying method. A thick ceramic layer generally has a high thermal barrier effect however, because failure often occurs, the use of an FGM layer gives an advantage in thermal property. During the thermal shock test, micro fracture processes were detected by the AE method. Also, the thermal shock test was performed for NFGM, FGM and the changed FGM in the layered composition profile. It was found through AE testing and the observation of fracture surface that FGM was superior to NFGM in thermal shock properties. The linear or metal-rich type FGM in composition profile had the best resisting property among the FGM. It was found that the controlled composition profile of the graded layers had better thermal properties.

The various techniques proposed previously to obtain a good antireflection(AR) coating induce a scattering of incident light by nanoparticles or control the refractive index by using different materials. This paper compares a suggested graded index profile with the quintic index profile previously suggested for producing an index profile that gives good performance from an AR coating. We assume the structure of the AR coating has three, six, and nine layers with 180 nm total thickness. The wavelength of incident light ranges from 300 nm to 1100 nm. We use the transfer matrix theory for a single layer to obtain the reflectivity of three, six, and nine layers. The reflectivity of two different index profiles with three, six, and nine layers is compared. As a result, the suggested graded index profile shows lower reflectivity than the quintic index profile with three layers, especially in the wavelength range from about 600 nm to 1100 nm. Therefore, we expect that these results can be applied to optical devices and filters in the range from visible(red) to near infrared.
The objective of this analytical study is to calculate the elasto-plastic stresses of Functionally Graded (FG) hyperbolic disc subjected to uniform temperature. The material properties (elastic modulus, thermal expansion coefficient and yield strength) and the geometry (thickness) of the disc are assumed to vary radially with a power law function, but Poisson's ratio does not vary. FG disc material is assumed to be non-work hardening. Radial and tangential stresses are obtained for various thickness profile, temperature and material properties. The results indicate that thickness profile and volume fractions of constituent materials play very important role on the thermal stresses of the FG hyperbolic discs. It is seen that thermal stresses in a disc with variable thickness are lower than those with constant thickness at the same temperature. As a result of this, variations in the thickness profile increase the operation temperature. Moreover, thickness variation in the discs provides a significant weight reduction. A disc with lower rigidity at the inner surface according to the outer surface should be selected to obtain almost homogenous stress distribution and to increase resistance to temperature. So, discs, which have more rigid region at the outer surface, are more useful in terms of resistance to temperature.
A graded harmonic finite element formulation based on three-dimensional elasticity theory is developed for the structural analysis of 2D functionally graded axisymmetric structures. The mechanical properties of the axisymmetric solid structures composed of two different metals and ceramics are assumed to vary in radial and axial directions according to power law variations as a function of the volume fractions of the constituents. The material properties of the graded element are calculated at the integration points. Effects of material distribution profile on the static deformation, natural frequency and dynamic response analyses of particular axisymmetric solid structures are investigated by changing the power law exponents. It is observed that the displacements, stresses and natural frequencies are severely affected by the variation of axial and radial power law exponents. Good accuracy is obtained with fewer elements in the present study since Fourier series expansion eliminates the need of finite element mesh in circumferential direction and continuous material property distribution within the elements improves accuracy without refining the mesh size in axial and radial directions.
The functionally graded material (FGM) is the new concept for a heat resisting material. FGM consists of ceramics on one side and metal on the other. A composition and microstructure of an intermediate layer change continuously from ceramics to metal at the micron level. This study is carried out to analyze the thermal shock characteristics of functionally graded PSZ/ metal composites. Heat-resistant property was evaluated by gas burner heating test using $C_2H_2/O_2$ combustion flame. The ceramic surface was heated with burner flame and the bottom surface cooled with water flow. Also, the composition profile and the thickness of the graded layer were varied to study the thermo mechanical response. Furthermore, this study carried out the thermal stress analysis to investigate the thermal characteristics by the finite element method. Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring was performed to detect the microfracture process in a thermal shock test.
Electron beam was applied on the low carbon steel in order to fabricate Metal/Metal GBM(Graded Boundary Material). Ni sheet was placed on the steel substrate. The electron beam was irradiated on the surface and produced a homogeous alloyed layer. Sequential repetition of electron beam treatments for 4 times resulted in 8mm thick graded layer. To determine each layers property, optical microscopy, XRD, microhardness tester and EDS were used. The residual stress was measured by the low angle x-ray diffraction method. The graded boundary layer was stepwise profile, but Ni content incresed up to 80 wt% and Fe content decreased 20 wt% near surface. Each layers microstructure and hardness varied by different Fe/Ni composition. The compressive residual stress was induced by martensite transformation in the 1st and End layers and the shrinkage cracks were formed in graded layer by rapid cooling.
In this paper, we report the effect of GaN/graded-composition AlGaInN/GaN quantum barriers in active regions on the electrical and optical properties of GaN-based vertical light emitting diodes (VLEDs). By modifying the aluminum composition profile within the AlGaInN quantum barrier, we have achieved improvements in the output power and the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) as compared to VLEDs using conventional GaN barriers. The forward voltages at 350 mA were calculated to be 3.5 and 4.0 V for VLEDs with GaN/graded-composition AlGaInN/GaN barriers and GaN barriers, respectively. The light-output power and IQE of VLEDs with GaN/graded-composition AlGaInN/GaN barriers were also increased by 4.3% and 9.51%, respectively, as compared to those with GaN barriers.
We propose a simple nondestructive method to obtain refractive-index profiles of a graded-index (GRIN) light-focusing rod by means of a diffraction grating. In our proposed method, a laser beam is illuminated through a diffraction grating perpendicular to the axis of the GRIN lens and the separation between the zeroth and first-order diffraction peaks is measured and analyzed. The results demonstrate that the refractive-index profiles of commercially available GRIN lenses can be successfully reconstructed.
